perfect introduction to the weight-room for a beginnerReview Date: 2008-11-30
After reading the book, and starting my own strength-training, I can't help but feel that weightlifting (as prescribed in this book) belongs in everyones fitness regime.
Essential! Very funny too.Review Date: 2008-11-28
Before i would spend 1hr-2hrs 4 days a week in the gym doing split routines.Working out every tiny muscle group for 10x times infinity with no rhyme or reason to it.Now it's down to the true essentials because that is what works. The beauty of this book is it's simplicity.
Also one thing i never knew before buying this book is how much FUN moving weights with barbells are.So much more satisfying than a lot of the exercises i did in the past.
If you've got to this page while searching for similiar books.Stop right now and buy this.Seriously!
You'll build more muscle than before, save money on gym equipment, save time(my workouts are far shorter than before) and have a lot of laughs reading Mark Rippetoe's informative and very funny prose.
All I can say is "Wow!"Review Date: 2008-11-20
This book has been recommended to me by Amazon quite a bit, but it just looked to simplistic to me and I figured I already knew how to lift properly. I guess I was wrong.
I finally decided to pick this book up after seeing some of its material crossed over on the crossfit website. After reading it I immediately started implementing some of the changes the book recommended into my routine. For the first time in years, I'm squatting pain free, without knee braces. My bench press has risen 30 pounds in just 1 month after implementing standing presses to my routine instead of doing them seated. I feel like an entirely new lifter, one who can continue to improve through his entire life, not just his youth. Thank you Mark Rippetoe and Lon Kilgore for writing such a great book. It belongs in everyone's weightlifting library, and I can easily give it the highest possible recommendation.

This Book Will Help You Look Good Naked!!Review Date: 2004-07-06
The only negative about this book is several errors in grammar.
But the stuff is so practical and easy to read who cares! A great compact easy to carry book that I still keep on my nightstand.
This author is showing what one bodybuilder did to build real muscle and compete to win the big prize. Whether you're just looking to tone or build muscle, this book will help you look good naked!
The title sums it upReview Date: 2004-02-25
His advise on all this really is 'realistic'. He stresses the basic exercises (bench presses, squats, pull ups, etc) to build a good foundation before progressing onto the more specialized exercises like cable crossovers. He points out that suppliments are not only expensive but aren't necessary if you simply eat the right foods at the right times.
Although the end of the book covers various aspects of competing, I think the book is best used by beginners to intermediates. It is the only bodybuilding book that I will need buy.
Wonderful book!Review Date: 2003-07-04
No nonsense bookReview Date: 2003-04-26
Melfa is direct and honest on what you need to do. The nutritional information is the easy to understand and gives you a complete break down of how to eat for either muscle building or fat loss. I found the nutritional section to be much more consise then most other books. Considering that eating right is more the 50% of weight training, I don't know why so many other books have skimped on this section. The excersises are consise and clear. Melfa explians all aspects from beginner up to advanced competive training with clear photos and detailed examples for performing each excersise.
I've checked out just about every book in the library about body building and this is the one I wanted to buy. I am constantly referring to it, any and all questions are addressed. If you want glossy, full color printing in a large bound book so you can gawk and dream, then don't buy this book. If you want to be serious about getting into a training program and progressing, this is the book to buy.
This book changed everything for meReview Date: 2003-08-31
It really is realistic; it is complete (diet, "dungeon" (basement) workouts, and - importantly - safety, are covered thoroughly), easy to follow, and the pictures are great. Many times, the author says "Look, I've done this excercise tens of thousands of times, and this is how you really have to do it. Watch out for X, Y, and Z, and don't fall into the various traps of bad form that can result in injuries, slow development, or uneven development).
The writing is friendly yet never verbose. The reader is encouraged at every step of the way, and the sample workouts and diets make things concrete.

Great sorce of InformationReview Date: 2008-08-04
Jeremy's book is separated into three parts: Mind set, Nutrition, Exercise. The mind set is a motivational section that describes what tools a person needs to achieve their goals. This was my favorite section of the entire book!
The next section is the Nutrition section. In this section Jeremy talks about what foods to consider eating. This section does not contain a diet plan rather Jeremy attempts to educate the readers about the properties of the different food groups. This section contains great information and gives the reader an idea of what foods are made of thus allowing the reader to decide for themselves what foods are good and what foods are bad.
The final section of this book talks about exercise. Jeremy describes some exercises and explains some different ways to do them. This is a great section if you are not familiar with weight lifting. Some of the exercises Jeremy describes are the Squat, Dead Lift, and Bench Press.
This really is an amazing book. I don't contain the words to do this book any justice. BUY THIS BOOK!

KAREN S.
Tools for lifeReview Date: 2008-05-30
This book is in part written around the philosophy from the book Body for Life: 12 Weeks to Mental and Physical Strength by Bill Phillips, yet it goes into much greater depth on some of the non-physical factors of health and weight loss or weight management. It deals with issues of stress, family life and work factors that can either help or hinder the physical transformation a person desires to make. This book has a very holistic approach to health and fitness. It presents the argument that in order to make lasting changes in your life, those changes must begin from the inside; transformation starts in the heart and in the mind and then works out in the body. Jeremy states: "Physique transformation is about more than simply losing weight. You will find that your life changes in many ways, too. You adjust to new clothing, a new image in the mirror, even a new sense of energy that allows you to achieve more during the day. Spiritually and mentally, you may change as well. Although these changes are almost always positive, change itself can be something that we fear. For this reason, it is important to understand what changes to expect to better prepare yourself as the process unfolds." Once the physical changes start to become more evident, you will have both positive and negative comments from people in your life. Likeness helps to provide some tools for dealing with both types. An example he gives is that if you have been over weight for a long time, you might not be accustomed to compliments - you will have to learn how to receive them and take some of them to heart.
This book, as the techniques in it are applied, can be a great tool for helping a person achieve greater health and wellbeing. This can be a factor in a longer and happier life. If these goals are things you have been thinking about, or have started working on, pick up this book to help boost your resolve and efforts to make your lifestyle changes.

A good book, take with a grain of salt.Review Date: 2008-03-27
The guide to living mindfully is wonderful.
The book really shows how fitness and transformation must take place in all aspects of life.
The workouts, yoga, and meditation guidance is top notch.
But, like I said, it does get a bit cheesy from time to time, so just know that going into it.

Steve Ilg Rocks!Review Date: 2005-07-28
I really love Steve's focus on functional strength, as opposed to
strength for strengths sake.
Ilg combines Yoga, Strength, Cardio, Meditation and Nutrition.
The workouts are challenging and extremely effective, they will transform your body (and mind) if you follow through. Steve's encouragements all throughout the book are very helpful/motivating.

The anatomy is more than just muscles, too. Bones, tendons and ligaments, and gender differences are covered in detail. Variations among individuals are touched on where they are important to training (e.g., elbow structures, hip mobility). There is a 3-page detailed muscular system illustration at the front of the book, and a 2-page detailed skeleton illustration in the back of the book, along with a handy illustration of major muscle groups.
Execution details are given for each exercise, along with comments on training effect and purpose. Again, these comments are in considerable detail, making this volume a superb source of material for anyone involved in corrective training.
The only thing missing, in my view, is a good index. A cross-reference of muscle by exercise would also be a nice thing to have.
My favorite single illustration has to be the muscles involved in the deadlift. If ever a picture made Pavel Tsatsouline's case for his Power to the People book (focused on deadlift and press) - Power to the People! : Russian Strength Training Secrets for Every American, this would be it.
This is a terrific book - 144 pages that can be used superficially as a quick training aid or for detailed study. It manages to serve both purposes well without one getting in the way of the other.
