Encyclopedic listing of 'problems' in space

Review Date: 2001-06-27
A detailed history of every accident with space hardware. From stratospheric balloon experiments and rocket planes to the space shuttle.

Includes extensive material on Soviet space history and accidents which may not be available elsewhere and may be worth the price of the book to those interested in space exploration.

The information is logically divided into training, launch, orbit and reentry with summaries and what was learned from it.

Is it possible to know too much about an accident? Well, I learned more than I wanted to about the Apollo 1 and Challenger accidents (I wanted to get past them because they were so tragic) but there is a great depth of detail to learn from here.

Stories of people reaching for that little extra bit of courage to deal with the worst case scenario. And what happens when space age technology doesn't quite work and what we can learn from it.

An Extremely Interesting Book

While the title of this book may seem a bit gruesome, I found this book to be one of the most interesting books related to manned spaceflight. Oftentimes, we hear about the great triumphs of the space program, but unless it is a great disaster, the problems encountered in spaceflight are often overlooked. This book covers all aspects of spaceflight (training, flight, EVA, etc.) from the early pioneering days right up to the present. The book includes a great deal on the Soviet space program that I have not seen before.

The book opens with the daring adventures of the early manned ballooning experiments and the goal of the setting a record altitude. I was quite impressed with what was accomplished in the 1920's and 1930's. The book then proceeds to the various experimental X-planes and the problems encountered with these projects.

After this brief, but very informative introduction, the book examines the era of manned spaceflight. The book is divided into four main areas: training, launch, space travel, and re-entry. Each of the main areas examines all the major and minor problems encountered with these aspects of spaceflight. As one would expect, the book covers the major spaceflight disasters, like Apollo 1, the Challenger explosion, Apollo 13, but it also includes even the smallest problems like the lunar explorers falling down or urine leaks in the shuttle EVA suits. It was interesting to see that the have been many more problems, though minor ones, in manned spaceflight than has been reported in the press.

The book contains numerous rarely seen photographs and drawings. If you're interested in manned space flight, this book provides a fascinating and unique view of the dangerous side of space travel.

I bought this book as a Christmas gift for my boyfriend, a volunteer firefighter since he was old enough to serve...and he loved it! He has barely put it down since he got this and has been raving about it to the other guys at the firehouse!

I love this book. I've been fascinated by fire engines & trucks since my earliest memory of my mother taking my younger brother to a San Jose fire station in the early 60s to get shots.

This book was written by someone who is truly enthusiastic about the subject matter. Great history. Great technical info. Beautiful pix. If you like fire engines, you'll love this book.

This textbook does an excellent job of clearing up often misunderstood or confusing grounding and bonding issues (even the difference between boning and grounding as well!). Article 250 of the NEC is explained with clarity and completeness I've found in few other texts. The author's inclusion of reasoning behind the rules, with excellent illustrations, really helped me arrive at a more complete understanding of the subject. It is an indispensible resource for electricians, electrical contractors, instructors, or engineers designing electrical systems.

As a continuing ed instructor with over 30 years experience in commercial wiring, I highly recommend this textbook as a reference for those residential electricians who are transitioning into commercial wiring. It is filled with very informative black and white illustrations and photos of conduit supports and fittings, conduit bending techniques, raceway systems, conduit bodies, boxes, enclosures, etc. There is an entire chapter devoted to hazardous locations with a multitude of clearly explained illustrations.

The author not only covers theory, codes, and standards, but also provides plenty of practical commercial wiring knowledge that is well explained and well illustrated with up-to-date illustrations.

Chapter 1 Codes and Standards in Wiring and Building Design
Chapter 2 Basic Design Factors

Chapter 4 General Circuit Requirements
Chapter 5 General Raceway Installation Requirements
Chapter 6 Raceway Systems

New riders essentials!

An absolute MUST for new riders, and a highly recommended read for all riders that have not had the chance to take the MSF course. Teaches you things that you just dont learn riding around and practicing on your own. Many lessons on slow speed maneuvering and in town riding were most accidents and problems arise.

The Motorcycle Safety Foundation does great work in training new riders and aiding experienced riders to maintain their skills. This book covers the "how to" of safe motorcycle operation and riding. It goes into much greater depth than the MSF's Basic Rider Course and the course materials. It well supplements and fleshes out the topics covered in MSF's courses with well written and useful information. I highly recommend it for every biker.

Each page has something exciting on it, like the train that is rushing round the track so quickly I always think the crane will not get the tree moved in time, but rescue vehicles are quick and manage to get the job done.

Because the book is called Emergency, every vehicle is in a hurry. I can't wait for the page to turn to see which one is next, but I almost know now as I've read it so many times.

We always have some fun with the last page when it becomes nighttime and all the rescue vehicles have to sleep. We take it in turns to spot things on the page and each time we try to pick something that is not easy to find, like the lady sitting in the hospital--I think it is really only her shadow though.

Armchair Interviews says: A wonderful book for children who like things that move fast--and do a special job.

Fun book!

We had this bok read to us at our library storytime by a firefighter and my 2 yr. old son had to check it out. So far I read it 3-5 times a day but I don't mind.

It is fun to read and the illustrations are bright and vivid. We will have to buy this one too! Perfect book for your toddler!

a "must-have" for any home library!

We checked this book out at the library a few weeks ago, and have been renewing it over and over since then. I just don't think we can part with it, because my two kids (2 1/2 & 15 months old) still ask for it every night. However, we're going to have to give it back to the city library, so I logged on this afternoon to buy a copy. We've never had a library book he loved like this one, and I love the perspective on rescue vehicles it gives. Instead of being afraid of the sirens and flashing lights, my two-year-old is learning the positive thought "Help is on the way!" The book is written in rhymes that are assembled well and fun to read, and my son is captivated by the words and the bright, vibrant pictures. It's really a fabulous book for not just little boys who love cars (although it is that, too), but for any small child to teach respect and trust for our various real-life rescue heroes.

Gorgeous illustrations.

It's a pity that there is no picture to accompany this listing as the illustrations (vivid, yet simple collage-type) are one of the best things about the book! It's also a bit bigger than most books, so the illustrations really stand out. My son (who just turned four) is obsessed with vehicles, especially vehicles that assist or rescue others, and this book really covers them all -- from the obvious ones (fire engine, ambulance, tow truck) to the less obvious ones (search-and-rescue helicopter, fire-fighting plane, flood raft, breakdown train, snowplow, traffic police motorcycle). Each double-page layout is devoted to one type of vehicle and situation. The last pages show all the vehicles in the places where they "sleep" for the night in a kind of overview of the town. This is perfect for reading at bedtime because of these last pages. (What's also nice about this illustration is that some of the vehicles are partially hidden or tucked away and so my son can "find" them each time.) The book is ... is hardcover and printed on heavy stock, so it's a keeper.

The Priddy books in this series are great. This one is nice because it not only has the great, bright, big pictures but also has different rescue professionals doing things with their cool helicopters, ambulances, etc.... The "action" shots seemed to really excite my daughter and her buddies. Stury board book, large for when they want a big bold book.
