Not only does this book tell you what you should do once you get varicose veins in order to get rid of them but it tells you how to prevent them. Because it is so well written, everyone can understand this book. And everyone should own this book!

I only wish I'd read this sooner...

For a tiny book, this packs a wallop of information. I work in the medical field and have been searching for answers to my questions about varicose and spider veins for a long time. I was pretty surprised to learn that the doctors and nurses I work with were as ignorant as I was! The next step was the medical library. I searched for a book--and all I came up with were medical texts the size of phone books and filled with medical jargon. Being in the medical field, I understand the jargon but I really didn't want to wade through it to get the information I needed. Then I found Get Rid of the Blues on the web. What I like most about it is that the author did tons of research (from those boring books I didn't want to read!) and boiled it down to a "cut-to-the-chase" primer. Thank you, Mary Johnson, for writing this book. I can't begin to tell you what a difference it's made for me.

Dr. Goldman covers the topic from A-Z. He cover both the smaller (spider) and larger verins in his book which is not a large volume despite its price. He provides the young physician with a concise, orderly manner with whihc to approach the problems in his practice, the tools, medications, methodology and and the forms both for record keeping and legal implications. It is a "turn key" program that if done with attention to detail will serve the new pracitcioner of this medical discipline well, whether dermatologist or plastic surgeon

This text is a fantastic resource for the practitioner new to the treatment of venous diseases. It is an indispensible tool in setting up a phlebology practice. The appendices of office practice tools (i.e.-eval forms, consents, manufacturers) was a wonderful suprise. Bravo!

A Vascular Surgeon's Perspective

Review Date: 2008-08-10
This book provides an excellent description of the anatomy, pathophysiology and in-office management of varicose veins. The authors explore the original seminal work by Dr. Robert Muller that has revolutionized the minimally invasive removal of varicose veins and apply their own renditions of those techniques.

The authors explain the anatomy of venous disease, and point out the most common patterns of varicose veins based on their voluminous experience. The use of non-invasive diagnostic techniques is explored, but only briefly. There is an excellent discussion of the use of local infiltrative anesthesia that allows for these procedures to be done in the office setting. Both standard infiltration and tumescent anesthesia techniques are detailed. Recommendations for allowable dosages of topical agents are made and validated with their large clinical experiences.

Only after a thorough discussion of the anatomical basis of the disease and the means of diagnosing the problem do the authors actually begin delving into their techniques of ambulatory phlebectomy in Chapter 9. As opposed to the use of large incisions, previously the standard of most vein specialists, they show how the removal of significant varicose veins can easily be routinely accomplished through incisions as small as 1 mm with minimal, if any, discomfort to the patient. Finally, the postoperative care, emphasizing the importance of a properly placed dressing, is well described. A thorough discussion of potential complications and management is also helpful. An informative CD-ROM disc accompanies the text.

My only criticism of this book has to do with the illustrations and photographs. I found the illustrations to be somewhat confusing, thus inadequate. There is also a significant loss of depth perception in the black and white photographs of the limbs with varicose veins and the procedures being performed. The color-flow duplex images in black and white were difficult to analyze, making some of them almost useless as well.

In summary, "Ambulatory Phlebectomy" is an excellent book for the phlebologist or surgeon wishing to establish or refine the technique of varicose vein removal in the office setting. I highly recommend it.

Vanish Varicose Veins - misleading title
Helpful Votes: 15 out of 15 total.
Review Date: 2001-08-31
The title of this book is misleading because it clearly states when you begin reading it, that you cannot get rid of varicose veins without doctors treatment and I already knew that. I though that Horsechestnut would get rid of existing varicose veins but it does not, it alleviates symptoms but will not get rid of the veins. The book also does not tell you where to purchase the seed extract or which brands are better than others.

Like BOTTOM LINE, this co-authored/co-edited volume is just as useless, and just as "sensational." As a "health nut" myself who uses some alternative medicines, I have tried numerous older and newer "healing remedies" in this book and found them ridiculous. I don't care one whit that the authors were guests on any TV show; their folksy, simple, counterintuitive approaches have never worked for me or any of my friends that have tried them. (The few that might seem to work are those that are well known and spring from common sense.) Maybe we're too skeptical, but we do suspend judgement for the period such "effective" and "tested" "remedies" are tried. This failure is not a good "batting" average. These authors know what desperate, ailing people want and are willing to puff even the slimmist of possibilities as "cures." They are slick salesladies. BOTTOM LINE (typical of its approach) advertises the authors as "famed researchers;" the former may be somewhat true, but the latter is not (unless "researchers" is put in quotes). This is based on my research. This book is a real remedy, but AGAINST following the authors' advice. Save your money and instead subscribe to "Nutrition Action Health Letter" by the Center for Science in the Public Interest, and "Consumer Reports on Health" (to some extent, a compendium of many health newsletters) by Consumers Union, publisher of "Consumer Reports." Eat correctly, exercise, take necessary supplements or medications, and see your holistic and traditional doctor or specialist. Don't fall for sensationalism. That's it.
