This is an excellent book with great information for women searching for options in dealing with fibroid tumors. Easy to read and understand.

The best book on fibroids I have read

This is the most comprehensive book on fibroids that I have read. It explains the different types, enumerates other conditions that may be confused for fibroids, details diagnosis techniques. It then thoroughly explores each treatment option currently available--and it is up-to-date, as opposed to another book I purchased which was so out of date it didn't even mention Uterine Artery Embolization. It gives statistics on the successes and complications from each treatment, and also suggests questions to ask your doctor and qualifications he/she should have. It assumes that you are intelligent enough to make up your own mind about what treatment you want and does not "sell" one over any other. It is just so refreshing!
I recommend it to anyone who is trying to get through the maze of confusing information about fibroids.

Very Informative

For years hysterectomies have been the "solution" for fibroids preferred by most doctors but that is changing and "What Your Doctor May Not Tell You About Fibroids" examines new techniques and therapies to treat fibroids including alternatives to hysterectomy. The book covers what fibroids are; how they are diagnosed; managing symptoms; watchful waiting; diet; exercise; stress; alternative medicines; drug treatment; options such as uterine fibroid embolization, myomectomy, and hysterectomy; and future treatment options. There is also a bibliography, a list of additional resources (books, organizations and websites) and an index.

I wish "What Your Doctor May Not Tell You About Fibroids" had been published when I was first diagnosed with fibroids. It is very informative and helps women understand what fibroids are and how to treat them (or in some cases not treat them). There are a lot of charts and lists throughout the book that are very helpful as they explain things such as facts about fibroids; risk factors for fibroids; fibroid sizes; symptoms of fibroids; a list of exercises; and some menu plans. Everything is explaining in layman's terms so nothing is too confusing to read.

One of the things that impressed me about the book is that it was written by a gynecologist and a radiologist, both men, who have an amazing grasp about the effect fibroids can have on a woman's life. I also liked the fact that even though there were some treatments they didn't agree with or recommend, they explained all aspects of treatments evenhandedly, giving the reader a chance to make up her mind. All the chapters in the book are excellent and the chapters on three procedures available (Uterine Fibroid Embolization, Myomectomy, and Hysterectomy) are especially well done. Each chapter describes the pros and cons of each procedure, when it is the best option, and how to prepare for each procedure and what to expect afterwards. I had a UFE in 2002 and I wish I had this book back then to prepare for my hospital stay.

This book was published in 2003 and I was surprised at how up to date it is - the authors even mentioned one of the newest (and still fairly rare) treatments - High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFUS). The authors clearly know their stuff.

"What Your Doctor May Not Tell You About Fibroids" is highly informative and I recommend it for women who are looking for an alternative treatment to fibroids besides a hysterectomy.

Unbiased and Thorough Coverage of Therapies

I was amazed at the vast amount of information in this book and the unbiased way in which it was presented. It covered all types of therapies whether nutritional, medical or alternative and did so indicating which ones were backed up by studies and whether the studies were done in a scientific manner or not. It was very, very helpful.

Up To Date Doctors Get Along and Offer Comprehensive Advice

Review Date: 2003-04-23
Knowledge about fibroids and available treatment options has been changing rather rapidly. This book is clearly the most accurate and up to date at the present time (2003). In a changing field, accurate and up-to-date are critically important. That alone, makes Goodwin/Broder a must-read for any woman dealing with fibroids.

This book is well documented, giving citations chapter by chapter - so the reader has some idea what information came from which sources, and can refer to those sources should she wish.

It is very heartening to see an Interventional Radiologist (Goodwin) and a Gynecologist (Broder) COOPERATING to provide COMPLETE information about fibroids in ONE book. Too frequently, these two branches of medicine appear to be competing with one another, even trying to discredit one another, on issues relating to fibroids and treatment of fibroids. There are treatments for fibroids which involve each of these doctor's specializations. Together these two authors make it possible for women to consider the options based on the knowledge of doctors who support what is best for the PATIENT rather than what is best for the individual doctor's ego or pocketbook. This book does that and does it splendidly well. Broder and Goodwin together set out both the pluses and minuses of the various available treatments and what's appropriate when - regardless of whose specialty each treatment lies within.

The authors even cover what's known about treatments of the future including some currently in clinical trials. Goodwin and Broder also discuss lifestyle changes, suggest ways to implement some of them, and what effects one might or might not realistically expect from such changes. The book is rational rather than emotional.

Although this book is written by doctors, it is clear, concise, easy to comprehend and complete. It is not preachy. It does not talk down to the reader. These authors understand their audience and are able to effectively communicate needed information.

I wrote this handbook to be as a practical guide for residents/fellows/ students and other clinicians in taking care gyn onc patients. Gyn onc patients are unique in the sense that they are surgical patients but usually with many medical problems (HTN, DM, COPD,etc). Thus, this handbook was written more like a combination of the surgery handbook + the Washington manual. my residents and fellows at UT Southwestern/Parkland and UTMB especially found the complication management section to be helpful in taking care their sick patients in the middle of the night. The chemo section is as update it as the GOG manual. I kept the book small enough to be pocket size, thus, easier to carry around.

This books is written for clinicians like you. thus, any feedback from you will be appreciated and incorporated to the next edition. thanks...

This handbook is concise, yet packed with the kind of information you need at the bedside, on rounds, or in preparation for the OR. Several of the sections have clear tables which make quick reference possible. And the procedures section provide clear step by step instructions for most all cases.

There is great, easy to access information in this pocketbook not only on the subject of Gyn Onc, but also on the medical management of patients, which is so important in the practice of Gyn. Oncology. The medical management section is broken down by systems (e.g., neuro, pulmonary, etc.).

Handbook of Gyn Oncology is a beneficial pocketbook not only for students/residents on a Gyn Onc rotation, but also for students and residents on other medical or surgical rotations (I've used it both on Dr. Santoso's rotation and in other months). Whether you need to know what the risks for HIV or hepatitis transmission during hemotransfusion or how/when to dose heparin or fresh frozen plasma, it's in this book. This pocketbook also contains descriptions of commonly performed surgical procedures in gynecologic oncology, as well as sections on chemotherapy and radiation therapy.

Dr. Santoso is considered one of the finest clinical educators at The University of Tennessee, and his book is concise, thorough, and highly recommended.

Best Instructions on Taoist Magick in English!

Ok, back in 1999/2000 I was all about trying to find books in the enlglish language that gave the reader step-by-step working techniques in Taoist Magick/Sorcery. Some unfamiliar with Zheng Yi Taoism pass off Taoism as just a "form of philosophy". They were never exposed to the Zheng Yi magickal side that involves registries of spirits and gods and demons, and techniques on how to command these celestial beings to command millions of spirits under their command. The paranormal side is something that Paul Dong covers in some of his books, but this series is THE best to put it ALL TOGETHER! This is actually one of the best metaphysical systems over all complete with healing, qigong, inner alchemy, yoga, psychic development, magical techniques, metaphysical understanding of the multi-verse, psychology, treatment and diagnosis of the whole spectrum disorders with Qigong medicine, energy work, energy anatomy and physiology, etc, etc, everything, EVERYTHING!!!!!

Dr. Jerry Alan Johnson has done us a favor by being the first to present such powerful information in the English Language at such a level. Before him, you would have had to speak Mandarin to learn such material.

He deserves over 5 stars. I hope that in the future, he will take me in as a personal apprentice!!!

If your into Oriental Medicine, Internal marial arts, qigong/yoga, Eastern Metaphysics and magick, then THIS ONE....THIS SERIES...THIS AUTHOR...IS...THE...RIGHT...ONE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You've just been told you have fibroids, whether it be a visit to the ER or to your ob/gyn doc, and your tests reveal fibroids, you've never heard of it and you're freaking...don't freak, read! This book gives you an in depth view from A to Z about being diagnosed, to monitoring your symptoms, to exploring all your options, which by the way, not everyone who has fibroids will have to have surgery...this is a personal journey of the first year from a woman who went through it...although she did end up having surgery, not all women do! I highly recommend also reading Healing Fibroids: A Doctor's Guide to a Natural Cure...these two books help you to take control over what you can, from eating, exercising and herbal teas, to surgery options(which having a hysterectomy is the LAST option, not first) and inform you of important information during a scary and stressful situation...

Read this book!

This book is from a patient's point of view and covers options from "ignore it" to "remove your plumbing" and everything in between. I've done quite a lot of research and this book did such a good job in considering what I am looking for in my life (planning on kids/no kids) as well as what I might be feeling about this very personal issue. I highly recommend it.

Mostly Good Info - Super Illustrations - Worth It

The illustrations are what really make this book. Dr. Stringer (may he rest in peace) gives a tremendous amount of useful information. Unfortunately, he fails to give citations to support his statements - and makes do with a bibliography at the end of the book (who can tell what supports which without reading ALL of the sources in their entirety & if you're going to do that, why bother to read the book?). He does clearly (honestly) state that some things are based on observations in his own practice or just his personal opinion - but it's frequently hard for me to sort out what's science and what's personal opinion/experience. For instance, he has a strong opinion on birth control pills and fibroids, which appears to be contrary to much of the science -- so I wish he'd referenced that better. Feeling that he could have been dead wrong on one point, makes other information in the book suspect in my mind.

The Stringer book has a nice respectful attitude toward the patient-reader; it comes off as an honest effort to educate patients, help them deal with fibroids and make treatment decisions; it makes some good explanations; and by far best of all it has those FANTASTIC illustrations. These illustrations made fibroids really come into focus in my head. So, I take the Stringer text with a serious shake of salt - since I know some of it is opinion rather than fact & I often can't tell which is which - and I LOVE THE ILLUSTRATIONS. My opinion: well worth the price for the illustrations alone.

What I reviewed was the great reviews each person has given this book. Each had been given the choice of having a hysterectomy, but found other alternatives. For those that have reviewed this book, does it tell you what you should do if the doctor says surgery is not an option, unless you're having extreme pain and heavy menstration (to where your going through a pad an hour). I having discomfort, but nothing serious.

Five years ago I had a myomectomy that found 2 grapefruit sized and 13 golf ball sized fibroids. I've begun to have problems again and have since found have 5 new ones...great.!This book gave terrific and real-life examples of what to expect. The only thing that wasn't clearly articulated is how many times can the procedures described be administered. My doctor says, "he only goes in once"?

I'd love to get them lasered while they are still small enough. My heart goes out to all that have to read this book because they are affected by them...they are less than fun.

This is a must read for any woman who is diagnosed with fibroids. This books lets you know there are other opitions available to you besides a hestorectomy (the option that's always presented to you). Although, I have a doctor that presented all my options to me there are some that don't. And before you make a decision to do something (like having a hestorectomy) and regret it later take another step and do some research you owe it to yourself. Remember this I was properly and throughly informed and I still did some research and I was happy to find out my doctor was right on point. Note: never be afraid to ask questions it can only help you better understand you can never know to much especially about your health.

There are so many things one could write about this material that it is truly difficult to know where to begin...

Any book that promotes unnecessary procedures via its contents, is a medical book to be avoided. Sorry Tulandi, et al, but you've let the medical consumer down with this mixed bag of goods on uterine fibroids & embolization.

Uterine artery embolization does NOT require hysteroscopy and laparoscopy prior to UAE. How is it that a gynecologist was asked to write the chapter on fibroid embolization technique, anyway?

Pictures are great. Content is truly lacking in peer review, appropriateness, and accuracy.

I simply expected MORE.
