This book is a great book for everyone, but especially mothers-to-be. How bacteria play into our immune system is amazing.
I had no idea. A must read for all physicians and pharmacists.

My son was diagnosed with severe reflux, eczema and food allergies. I have spent hundreds of hours trying to research probiotics.
ALL of this information is contained right inside this powerful book. I found an absolute wealth of information and leads
to help me treat my sons severe allergies. Many of the suggestions in her book have saved us time and money. And one of the
most important parts is where the author helps you select a probiotic, since MUCH of what is on the market is worthless, mislabled
or DEAD bacteria. People are starting to become aware of the benefits of probiotics (as other countries have known for so
many years) but they are throwing their money away on products that do not even contain the strains of bacteria listed on
the label or even any live bacteria at all. Although I bought the book with interest in my son's situation, there are so many
other conditions discussed and I have lent this book out more times than I can count. It is also very suitable for physicians
and I have had one friend use it to discuss her probiotic use during pregnancy (to prevent allergy in her baby) and I just
bought another copy to give to our pediatrician (who also recommends certain reputable brands of probiotics to help treat
behavioral issues) I would highly recommend this book. It will save you hundreds of hours of research and you will think of
many friends and relatives who can benefit from the research it contains.

Probiotics are products containing bacteria that are beneficial to health. Digestive problems and allergies are increasing
in developed countries and much of the source of these difficulties appears to lie with a poor mixture of bacteria in the
intestine. Taking probiotics to remedy the imbalance is a popular approach among the general public, but very little reliable
information is available.
Kelly Karpa's book remedies this by providing a readable and scientifically-sound review of current knowledge.
Dr Karpa is both a qualified pharmacist and a concerned parent, and she combines her skills to produce an admirable book. It explains the gut microflora (billions of bacteria that reside in each person's intestine) and also the evidence for probiotics improving a range of disorders.
These disorders include infectious diarrhoea (gastroenteritis, antibiotic-associated diarrhoea, Clostridium difficile, traveler's diarrhoea), allergies (rhinitis, asthma, food allergies), urogenital infections (vaginitis, UTIs), and inflammatory bowel disease (Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis).
An especially useful chapter is on how to select a good probiotic. There is also information on prebiotics, soluble dietary fibre that boosts numbers of one's existing beneficial bacteria.
The two chapters on the immune system are a bit heavy going for the general reader, but they both have a short summary and the chapters can be skipped without spoiling the rest of the book. Also, there is no index. But the book is well-structured with detailed Contents pages, so the absence of an index should not prove a major difficulty.
Despite these minor weaknesses, the book is invaluable for people with any of the listed chronic conditions as well as for health professionals who work with such patients.

I can not say enough good things about this little book. It is both a very well put together overview of urology, while still
being very useful to both lower and upper level residents AND medical students. It covers many of the common problems seen
in urology in such a way as to be useful in day to day patient managment as well as giving a nice overview of facts that may
be helpful for the urology boards. This little guy is a very easy read while at the sametime time being full of helpful info.
As overviews of urology goes, this is the best book out there.

Is this answer to the cause of certain illnesses?

The other guy's sperm is about a major health risk that is rarely discussed today. The author, a Mayo trained board certified
urologists and former clinical instructor at the University of Utah College of Medicine, argues that sperm has a role in a
variety of autoimmune diseases including diabetes, thyroiditis, lupus erythematosus, and arthritis. The author concludes that
there is evidence that, in certain situations, non self sperm can cause cancer and other diseases, especially as related to
male homosexual behavior and certain other kinds of sexual behavior. It is well known that the sperm which enters the circulation
system produces an immune reaction. He also claims that evidence exists that other men's sperm may be the essential cause
of gonorrhea, nonspecific urethritis, and syphilis. He then provides evidence that bacteria and Treponema are complicating
factors only, and that the absence or eradication of the bacteria and Treponema is a false assurance of lack of disease. Research
on longevity has consistently found that those who engage in homosexual behavior live to be less that half as old as the married
heterosexual population. Part of the reason is due to aids, but most persons actively involved in the homosexual lifestyle
commonly suffer from a wide variety of diseases, especially various types of infections and cancers. For this reason, the
average age of death for one involved in the homosexual lifestyle is around 44, and those that have aids live about 10 percent
less. This work could help to explain why. Is the author correct? This is not an easy question to answer, but this book has
certainly raised some questions that must sooner or later be answered. It is must reading for all of those involved in gay
health concerns. It is also a neglected area of research that needs to be addressed. The reviewer has spent many years in
cancer research, both as a student at a medical school, and as a research associate in a medical school, yet has learned much
from his reading of this book. I have many questions about Dr. Tyler's thesis but this is what a good book should do.

really necessary, all I wanted to know was how to avoid getting urinary tract infectins.

This is the Bible for the cystitis sufferer. Excellent tips and tools to help you deal with the discomfort and pain but most
importantly to prevent infections from happening in the first place! I used to get UTI's every six months like clockwork
but since I started following the instructions in this book I've taken control and know how to take better care of myself.
Don't just keep suffering - do something about it and this is a great way to start.

Written by expert urologist Elizabeth Kavaler, M.D., A Seat on the Aisle, Please! The Essential Guide to Urinary Tract Problems
in Women is a straightforward yet sympathetic discussion of women's urinary tract disorders, including chronic urinary tract
infections, different types of incontinence, pelvic floor prolapse, and interstitial cystitis. For too long, too many doctors
have paid inadequate attention to pelvic discomfort, relegating it as a natural consequence of aging or even viewing patient
complaints as evidence of psychological malfunction. Written for patients and medical practitioners alike, A Seat on the Aisle,
Please! explains these diseases in plain terms, with black-and-white medical diagrams as needed. Patients and their loved
ones will find the candid pros and cons of various treatment options especially helpful. Highly recommended.

Yes, we do need books like this, but here's what I didn't like about this one. I flipped randomly through it (it has great
diagrams) to Stress Incontinence, a chapter that starts out with a horribly scary story about a woman who has the wrong corrective
surgery -- a hysterectomy!! and "bladder lift" -- due to a misdiagnosed (elsewhere) incontinence. She was no better after
the surgery, and of course this was miraculously repaired by a second surgery performed by the author. Stories like this scare
the begeezus out of me, and I'm not sure it's helpful to relay a misdiagnosis and improper repair. In the same chapter, there
is a description of an examination in which the practitioner is alternately portrayed as a she and then a he, which is always
disconcerting when I happen upon it. Later in the book, there is a section that discusses spinal and epidural anesthesia and
we are told that cocaine is derived from the cocoa plant. If you didn't know that it was actually from the coca plant, you
might be nervous. All this from a random riffling, so I'm not sure what I would find if I had more time to devote to sitting
down and reading the whole book. Perhaps I would be more forgiving, but at this point I'm not motivated.
Every woman should read this book

This book can help you, or someone you know, break through the wall of shame and silence that surrounds bladder problems in
our society -- and get relief. If you've never recommended a book to anyone, let this one be your first! You'll be thanked
by friends, sisters, mothers, or grandmothers, any one of whom may have experienced loss of bladder control, recurrent urinary
tract infections (UTIs), cystitis, or pelvic pain but was too embarrassed to talk about it even with a doctor.
Although the title is tongue-in-cheek, "A Seat on the Aisle, Please" is a serious book for any woman with a urinary or pelvic condition. Millions of women of all ages who are suffering from these problems can use this book to learn more about their disorders and discover that they can be successfully treated. If you've ever experienced such a problem and been brushed off by an uninterested doc, you know exactly why you want this book.
I remember a time when breast cancer was a subject that we could only discuss in whispers. Today we still have similar taboos about urinary leakage or incontinence. What we need are more women brave enough to write and speak out about their bladder problems, and more physicians who treat them with compassion, patience, and persistence. In "A Seat on the Aisle, Please," you'll find many female patients with stories that may be similar to your own, and a caring doctor who can help.
This book is well organized to guide you through each type of urinary tract disorder. Dr. Elizabeth Kavaler first explains the general "nuts and bolts" of the female pelvis and what can go wrong. Then she describes in detail the experiences of an actual patient. In clear, straightforward language, using helpful diagrams, she explains each condition (additionally, there's a very useful glossary of terms in the back). Finally, she discusses the most current treatment options available.
Thanks to Dr. Kavaler for writing this book and serving as such a passionate advocate for women's health. Urinary tract problems don't have to ruin our quality of life! Every woman should read this book -- and join Dr. Kavaler in speaking out to remove the stigma of bladder problems.
