Tick Talk Rocks!

When I picked up this slender volume, I thought it would be just another boring dissertation on the history of clocks throughout the ages (they really need to print the subtitle in a larger font). But once I started to read "Tick Tock," I was completely hooked. Never before have I read such a moving account of ticks and their day-to-day struggles. This book clearly illuminates how ticks are really just like us--they understand that nothing leads to happiness like a warm puppy, and they realize that the only way to survive in this cold, harsh world is to leech off others as much as possible. The entire book was deeply moving, but I literally cried out loud when I got to the part about the evil scientists who conspired to blame lyme disease on such tiny, innocent creatures, when we all know the truth: lyme disease is caused by Vitamin D deficiency. Or maybe that's rickets. Anyway, run, don't walk to your nearest bookseller; that Paul Milazzo sure knows his ticks!

Accurate and even-handed. I only give four stars because I was hoping for more in-depth scientific explaination.

Everything You Need to Know About Lyme Disease and Other Tick-Borne Disorders, 2nd Edition

This intriguing book provides an in-depth look at Lyme disease; what it is, where it is found, how to diagnose and prevent it, and finally, how to treat it.
The information on ticks, where they are found, and the suggestions on how to prevent Lyme and treat the illness through antibiotics is extensive, interesting and useful.
However, the author describes pharmaceutical antibiotics as being the only viable option for treating Lyme Disease, when in fact there exist a multitude of other therapies for combatting the illness, some of which can be more effective than antibiotics. These include Rife machines, salt/C, herbal antibiotics, Immune Response Training, and homeopathy.

A MUST BUY for ALL

This is an excellent overview of the disease with detail a doctor or interest patient would want to know. It handles information with non-alarmist views and scientific accuracy.

Even better is the updated new version that includes data on other tick-borne diseases. The writing shows respect for patients and the medical community.

I really like the information that addresses the questions about possible Lyme and other diseases in the midwest and other areas that are not considered to have lyme disease.

Yep. This is the book you want.

Fantastic book, and clearly the best that I read during my recovery from LD. Thorough, level-headed, wonderful.

A useful summary on tick biology
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2004-06-03
A concise, pocket-sized summary about tick biology, the diseases they transmit, and ways of protecting yourself against tick bites. The first three chapters describe the biology of North American ticks that affect humans. The next three chapters focus on tick-borne diseases and the final three chapters deal with personal protection and tick control. The book is very up-to-date, authoritatively written by a tick biologist, and contains much helpful information. It would be particularly valuable for people who travel around the United States and frequent recreational areas where ticks may be present. My only criticisms are:

1) The maps in my copy of the book lacked color-coded figure legends, making them more difficult to interpret.

2) The only references given are to websites. It would have been helpful, I think, to have references to the studies described in the book.

Overall, an easy read and a good resource for someone concerned about ticks and the diseases they transmit.

Roger Drummond is a world recognized expert on ticks. His years of research in the field of acarology (study of ticks), combined with a clear, concise writing style make this a straightforward, easy-to-read book. It is packed with practical, scientifically sound information on ticks. It's a great reference for campers, hikers, and most importantly, families playing in backyards. Highly recommended!!

This is about a page and a half of plain old news article. There is nothing new or different that isn't available with more information at no cost on line. What you do get is error: for example, she asserts that co-infection with babesiosis and B burgdorferi or B microti may make for more severe illness, but there is no increased risk for long term complications. This runs counter to the body of literature on this subject. As for other co-infections or tick-borne diseases than babesiosis, her only mention is of A. phagocytophilia, giving the impression that these are the sum of major infections. She completely ignores both erlichiosis and Bartonella, both common co-infections. This author needs to either learn Lyme, or stick to material she has adequately researched.
