This is a really good book but I found it a little hard to read and I enjoy reading medical books. I do like that it's entirely about the mental aspect of thryoid disease unlike most other books that just explain all the symptoms in a basic way. This devles into so much about depression and anxiety and the changes relative to your thyroid hormones. I was shocked how much the two relate to each other and was happy to know I'm not crazy...it's my thyroid! :)

For anyone with a thyroid problem, THIS BOOK IS FOR YOU! I wish it could have been published years earlier when I was first diagnosed with Hashimoto's thyroiditis. Dr. Friedman and Winnie Yu have put together information that is easy to read and understand. As the title implies, they have included everything you will need to know. The more information and knowledge you accumulate about any condition you have, the better able you will be to get proper treatment. I thought "life" was really slowing me down, but it was really my thyroid!

Having thyroid problems for over 12 years and having read every book ever published on thyroid disease, I wasn't sure what to expect from this book. What I found was the best book there is on thyroid problems! Not only was it an easy read (finished it in one sitting), it was full of useful information from both a clinical doctor and reseach doctor's point of view (Dr. Friedman is both). I have since thrown away all my other thyroid books and this book is the only reference I use. I recommend this book to everyone with thyroid problems and their friends and family to help anyone understand this complex and debilitating health epidemic.

An Excellent Book!

Dr. Friedman's thyroid disease health guide is comprehensive, very well written and most of all, easy to read. I personally have two other thyroid reference books and once I purchased his book, I've basically relegated the other two to the book case with Dr. Friedman's book residing on my desk. Kudos Dr. Friedman, you've succeeded in educating a person who needs more information and made him more comfortable and better aware just by reading your excellent book.

A remarkable and valuable book on a difficult topic

This is a must read for persons with thyroid or other endocrine disorders. Dr. Friedman is a brilliant diagnostician and endocrinology researcher and has put together a book that reflects his immense learning and experience. This patient-friendly book on an extremely complicated and frustrating topic will be welcomed by sufferers of endocrine disorders. Dr. Friedman clearly lays out the nature and treatment of many endocrine disorders. This text will be of use to those many patients who must rely on general practitioners in indentifying and treating their endocrine disorders. Endocrine disorders are frequently misdiagnosed or undiagnosed. Despite the common reliance on blood work, there is still an art and feel to properly diagnosing and treating endocrine disorders that requires a high degree of physician/patient communication. This book will go a long way to enable patients to learn about their illness and to better enable them to communicate with their physicians.

It has now been a year since my initial diagnosis of hypothryoidism and Hashimoto's Thryoiditis in July 2006. In my intial year, I have read many articles and research on thryoid disease, but most did not answer all my questions. I recently came across this book during my initial appointment with Dr. Friedman in July 2007. This book not only answered my questions, but it answered other items I did not know. This book has a lot information, but it is basic enough for all levels to understand. I highly recommend this book for those with thryoid problems and/or family and/or friends with thryoid problems.

This book was very helpful to me as a newly diagnosed patient with Graves Ophthalmopathy. I had so many unanswered questions after my dr's appointment and sitting down to read this book really helped me out. I learned many ways to help myself and whether or not my dr was doing all he could. I would highly recommend this book to others who have questions or just want to learn more.

This book is by far the most comprehensive, and yet understandable for the patient, that I have read on this topic. It has been invaluable to prepare me not only for communicating with my ophthamologist, but also for identifying complementary approaches that have greatly relieved my symptoms. The book serves as an important guide as my disease progresses which allows me to handle each difficult symptom intelligently. Wouldn't be without it!

I too have been recently diagnosed with Graves eye disease and was left very frustrated as to what I could do to help after leaving an opthamologist's office that supposedly specialized in this. This book lists things we can do to help this condition and stop aggravating - my Dr. didn't tell me to quit using Visine among numerous things. I highly recommend this book to anyone looking for answers and ways to be proactive in their own treatment.

A great introduction to the world of thyroid disorders. Includes everything from finding a specialist, the initial diagnosis, starting treatment and what to expect throughout the entire process. I have skimmed through other books on the subject and Thyroid for Dummies gives the best 'cram session' overview and has humor throughout the pages and even some cartoons! It really breaks up the monotony of page after page of grey text.

Helped us make this important and rather emotional decision

My spouse has been battling with Hyperthyroidism for 15 years, going on and off PTU and in and out of remission. Her latest annual blood work indicated that she was hyper again which re-opened the dialog about what treatment to choose (drug therapy, radioactive iodine, or surgery).

Thyroid for Dummies provided a detailed yet very readable review of what the function of the Thyroid glad is, Thyroid disorders, treatment options, etc. If you are facing a decision point about treatment for a thyroid disorder or have Thyroid wellness concerns then I think you will find this book very helpful and informative as we did.

In the end we choose Radioactive Iodine treatment. The unbiased facts and wealth of information provided helped us make this important and rather emotional decision in a manner that enabled us to move forward with confidence. Of note, the author Dr. Rubin prefers drug therapy as the first mode of treatment for Graves Disease. As this had already been tried in our case and did not provide a predictable and sustainable treatment we choose Radioactive Iodine over surgery.

Hyperthyroid/Graves patients NEED to read this book

I am a 4+ year Graves disease veteran who is currently in remission. I strongly believe that EVERY newly diagnosed person should read this book BEFORE they make any decision on any PERMANENT treatment procedure such as surgery or radioactive iodine ablation (RAI).

Dr. Rubin takes the often confusing subject of thyroid disease and makes it easily understandable to the newly diagnosed. Every person with a diagnosed thyroid disorder SHOULD be reading this book and educating themselves about their disease!

Misinformation is abundant when it comes to thyroid disease. Dr. Rubin makes no bones about HIS preference for treatment of hyperthyroidism/Graves disease and lays out his well thought out, logical, reasons behind HIS preference for treatment with anti-thyroid meds very well (page 73). I was thrilled to see this recommendation as this was the route I chose...and fought to continue using for 4 years...with success in the form of total remission after 4.3 years of anti-thyroid medication.

Thank you Dr. Rubin for speaking up and telling it like it is about anti-thyroid medication...that you CAN take it for as long as you need it...that there is NO time frame limit for these meds, and the adverse reaction risk is very low. You're my hero!

As a person that has an underactive thyroid, myself, and finding that a LOT of other books on the matter barely scratch the surface, this book is an informative change. The sections are easily navigated and understood without the content being dumbed down to an elementary level of thinking. I was especially impressed that Dr. Ruben had touched on the psychological state of people with this medical issue, my pre-diagnosed years make more sense now. I have since lent this book to my mother so she can become more informed as well.

I highly recommend this to anyone who has, knows of or thinks they know of someone with a thyroid problem. It certainly gives you the information you need to understand.

Braverman's grand work is almost the standard against which all other thyroid texts are compared. While not as comprehensive as the 6th edition, the eighth edition manages to cover the essentials of Thyroidology today. While some of the authors still seem to subscribe to the false god of TSH, instead of taking a good history and using good clinical acumen; this work does cover the state of Thyroidology as it exists today. Definitely an excellent reference for anyone working in the field, and a good place to begin a better understanding of the Thyroid.

My first year of diagnosis was a hard one. Hypothyroidism isn't something that you are cured of overnight. It takes months and months of hormone therapy before you begin to feel normal again and even more before the energy is there to support the feeling. :) This book helped me to see where I was in the process and let me know when I was expecting too much. If you've been diagnosed hypothyroid, you should really buy this book. It will take 12-18 months to get back to normal, wouldn't it be nice to have a friend to help you along? :)

Wonderful fount of information.

I first 'found' this book at the library while looking up information concerning HYPOTHYROIDISM. Even though I had been diagnosed many many years ago my specialists never explained to me the many situations this book discusses.
I was so happy that I could get this book for my personal library -at a discounted price- It was in near perfect!!! condtion.
This distributor was very accurate with the discription of the condition of this book.
I will order from them again/ with no hesitation.

This book is dense with anything you could possibly want to know about the topic of thyroid cytopath. As an atlas, the images are numerous, and their quality is good to very good. Some images are a little small, but it doesn't really detract from their utility. Lots of tables as well. There seem to be a number of very nice cytopath texts out there (Sidawy, Atkinson, Clark/Faquin, and even Renshaw), but this one is probably the best for this one specific topic. Highly recommended.

Of particular help to women seeking in-depth information on thyroid issues.

Review Date: 2001-01-17
I highly recommend this book to anyone who has thyroid problems themselves or in their family. I have been going to doctors for 19 years now after a total thyroidectomy because of thyroid cancer. I was sent home from hospital with little information and told to take tablets for the rest of my life. I have been having regular checkups but have always wanted to know why did it happen. This book told me more than any doctor has in all those years. I found myself saying "Why wasn't this book around when I was going through it all?" After reading this book I now know I need to see a specialist and my children also need to be checked. This book gives you all the information you will need to be well informed about thyroid problems.
