I checked out half a dozen books from the medical library on thyroid cancer, and this is the only one I BOUGHT. Dr. McDougall's
writing is clear and very readable (I'm an engineer, not a doctor, by the way). I particularly like his style of showing
both sides in areas of controversy, complete with data for both sides as well as giving his own opinion and experiences.
Pretty much every aspect of TC is covered, and the chapter on TC in children is particularly good.

As a RN, Medical Laboratory Technologist and breast cancer survivor, I literally read this volume in one sitting. At times
I found it to be a bit technical or maybe it is just that my organic chemistry and cellular biology courses were some 30 years
ago. Dr. Derry does specifically state that this is his theory based on his understanding of the current literature. I do
agree that most of us are iodine deficient. One thing I have noticed in talking with other breast cancer survivors is that
a large majority of us have both breast cancer and hypothyroid. Far too many for it to be statistical coincidence. Of the
women I know who have had or have breast cancer at least 50% also carry a diagnosis of hypothyroidism and or fibromyalgia.
I also have the fibromyalgia diagnosis and wonder how much of this is actually hypothyroid. I feel strongly enough about
Dr. Derry's theory that I have begun taking supplemental iodine. I would recommend this book to anyone who is concerned about
either thyroid function or breast cancer.
Proposes Iodine as Prevention and Treatment for Breast Cancer

Breast Cancer and Iodine by David Derry MD PhD, is a unique 100 page volume which presents the academic case for iodine as
prevention and treatment of breast cancer. The book should be handed out freely during October Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
Although written for the lay reader, it should be required reading for all medical students, breast surgeons, mammographers,
breast cancer oncologists and any doctor who orders mammograms.
With ten pages of medical references including the work of B A Eskin and W R Ghent, Dr. Derry discloses the remarkable connection between iodine deficiency, fibrocystic breast disease and breast cancer. Iodine's anti-cancer activity lies in its control of apoptosis, or programmed cell death.
Derry presents case studies complete with surgical pathology confirmation showing regression of both fibrocystic breast disease and carcinoma-in-situ breast cancer with iodine treatment. He also presents a case report case of infiltrating breast cancer involving the skin which regressed after prolonged application of topical Lugol's iodine solution.
I can report from the experience of my own family members that iodine supplementation causes regression of fibrocystic breast disease.
Derry's ideas in the book could be easily revised into an NIH grant proposal to research and confirm the role of iodine. To do so would advance the nation's health and be a great public service. Iodine is safe, inexpensive and readily available without a prescription. A US policy of iodine supplementation matching the Japanese dietary intake of iodine could very well be our best preventive measure against breast cancer.

Not at all what I expected. Hard to read and very vague. No real directions and lots of technical bull that left me scratching
my head.
I would not recommend it at all. The title is very misleading. It did not present any how to's or instructions like the title implies. A waste of money.

I ordered two copies of this book. If every woman would read it, it would prevent a lot of needless suffering. Men ought
to read it too because Dr. Derry tells the symptons of low iodine and low thyroid hormone which most every one has whether
they be man or woman. I also recommend Dr. Brownstein's book on Iodine. These two books go hand in hand.

This information about preventing cancer is 100% in-line with my experiences with my patients. I have seen every case of
fibrocystic breasts clear up in weeks with iodine. This book provides a lot of original hypothesises about how and why iodine
works the way it does. With further research, I think some of them will certainly be verified. Others are good working models
for our current understanding.

you informed without going into indepth medical detail. It was easy to read and I would highly recommend it to patients and

My wife recently was diagnosed with follicular neoplasm and will be having her surgery on 1/10/2006. I hastily ordered a
number of books to get educated, and this is the best I've read.
It contains not only medical/technical treatments of the subject by various experts, but it also contains the experiences of thyroid cancer patients/survivors, which helps me as a caretaker to anticipate potential emotional challenges both my wife & myself will be facing.
I would have given a 5 star rating if pictures/illustrations were provided.

If you were confused by the bombardment of info your endo piled onto you upon your diagnosis, this is the book to sort things
out and--most importantly--take the fear of the unkown away.
Information is key, and information in an easily read and understood format is what you get with this book. You don't need to sit down and read it cover to cover, in fact, the book does not recommend that you do that, but it's there to answer specific questions you will have, not just now, but at any time in the years to come.
Someone commented that the book does not addess the fears and concerns of family members. I think it does, since the fears of the patient aren't all that different from those of close family members. At least that has been my experience from now both sides of the fence. And the book lists contact info for support groups both online and in major cities across the country.
If you're reading this review, clearly you're not someone who sticks his or her head in the sand, and that tells me that you will greatly benefit from this book.

This is a great book for anyone going through Thyroid Cancer surgery and treatments. I bought 3 books, one for myself and
one each for my parents. My family had a lot of question about the cancer and treatment. When you're post-op and hypothyroid
it's difficult to explain over and over what is happening to you. My mother found that the book was very easy for her to
understand and it answered her questions regarding the cancer and treatments. I found that it was very useful while going
through the surgeries and treatments as a reference book. The book answered a lot of my questions. I learned about the book
through the Thyroid Cancer Survivors' website www.ThyCa.org. Using both the book and the website helped me get through it
all.

This book is what helped me to find useful information on what was an illness that wrecked havoc with my life. I appreciated
the fact that so much of the content was written as true medical data. Although that is a little more complex to read it
also validated the accuracy of the information to my doctors as I tried to use this to further educate them on pituatary conditions.
As a side note, the Pituatary Network Association is constantly striving to improve their contributions to this cause and they released a fourth edition of this book on their website during 2006. Any edition will be useful but getting the 4th edition will provide the most current knowledge base. Their website is extremely valuable but also having a reference book was a must for me.

The book is very out of date and not organized well at all. It does not answer more than 50% of the questions I had regarding
this disease.
At 186 pages (at least 1/3 was filler regarding general issues on healing and disease. . . something I could get from almost any web site on serious illness), this book is certainly not worth the expensive price. I would not recommend it at all. Visit the web sites specifically for thyroid cancer and you can educate yourself much more
thoroughly than by buying this book.

I was very disappointed after buying this book. Not to mention this book cost me nearly 200 U. S. dollars. Anyway, money is
not the matter. If after reading this book it really helps me to manage Thyroid Cancer patient better, even two thousand dollars
are worth of that. The problem is that the title is totally mis-leading. Howe can it be called a comprehensive textbook on
treating Thyroid Cancer?? For a comprehensive book, like DeVita's Cancer, princple and practice of oncology, Harrison's textbook
on Internal Medicine, or Henry Kaplan's Hodgkin's Lymphoma these are the true all time classics or what we call " bible "
on these subjects. Concerning this book, I think a chapter on thyroid cancer from any standard textbook of cancer covers
as much, if not more than it. Just take one example, it did not mention a single word on how to treat patient with recurrence
in neck node or at least give us a guidline for that. All other related topics are very briefly given and some are not touched
at all. I hope Mazzaferri's textbook or other larger textbook on thyroid cancer can actully do the job it should be. A real
" comprehensive "textbook for reference for the managment of CA Thyroid.
