Anyone who suffers from headaches or migraines will benefit greatly from this book. I am a massage therapist and consider
this information crucial when educating my clients proper self care. It is extremely easy to understand with clear instructions
and great diagrams showing muscles and possible trigger point placements. I am very grateful for this book as it has contributing
greatly to my education on helping others with migraines and headaches.

I also have Valerie DeLaune's excellent CD-ROM, "Pain Relief with Trigger Point Self-help." I don't actually suffer from headaches
or migraines, myself, but bought this for a friend. The other reviewers have positive experience in using this book, and discuss
it very well - I can only add that I think the book is well organized, clearly written, and importantly, has numerous photos.

I've struggled with migraines for 10 years and this book not only gave me an understandable reason why and where the pain
was originating (not in my head, where I assumed it started), but it also details how to manipulate those "trigger points"
for lasting pain relief. Thank you, Valerie!!!

For the first time I could find a comprehensive textbook on ocllusion and TMJ position, and applying these in practice. Lots
of pictures and clinical hints. It's clinically oriented so General dentists should have it as an asset in their libraries.

I've attended over 130 hours of continuing education classes at the Dawson Academy. And, essentially, this book is the teachings
of the core concepts of the Dawson philosophy. If you can't afford to spend tens of thousands of dollars like I did attending
his center, then this book comes as a close second. The golden nugget of the dawson philosophy is that form follows function.
The book is well illustrated with copious amounts of color photos, diagrams and illustrations. I understand that Dr. Dawson
did some of the illustrations himself which are fair. I guess I can be a little picky since I have a Master's degree in medical
illustration as well as in dentistry. I refer to this book consistently to refresh my memory from the courses I've taken and
I also pick up something new each time I read it. The only chapters that I don't pay much attention to are the ones that refer
to Dr. Piper's system of classification on TMJ derangements. I tend to refer instead to Dr. Okeson's text book on TMD disorders
which is a simpler system for the general dentist. I feel I would have to attend a few of Dr. Piper's course before I felt
comfortable using his system. In a nutshell, this is probably Dr. Dawson's final gift to the dental community as he enters
his twilight years. He is one of the living legends that I have the greatest respect for. His philosophy ties in well with
other master dentists such as Dr. Frank Spear, Dr. John Kois, and Dr. Terry Tanaka.

This author is the only one who seems to know anything about this disorder. I also thought he really cares because the cost
of the book is such a small amount to part with.
I bought his other book for $10, Taking control of tmj
I spent about alot of money going to numerous dentists, doctors, chiropractors and no one taught me what this guy knows. I was very stressed out about what I was going through, but his book gave me more peace of mind. He explains whats going on with you also and how to correct it. Very inexpensive for what you get!

teeth clenching while I sleep, but also learning to let go of all my muscles and relax better. I have also found that I
seem less vulnerable to getting stressed out when I listen consistently. I have a young daughter who has trouble getting
to sleep, and it also helps her go right to sleep. Sometimes my kids fight over who gets the cd at night.

The title of your book is very good as TMJ does have indeed many many faces. Unfortunately the medical and dental communities
ingeneral tend to treat TMJ in the traditional dogmas of the past forty years or more. I am a dentist who treats TMJ problems
with functonal jaw orthopedics and when done correctly this technigue "unmasks" TMJ as the true culprit as the causitive factor
of most all chronic headaches, neck aches and other associated head and neck pain problems. The most common ailment associated
with TMJ is the chronic headache including migraine. Thousands of cases have been resolved using functional jaw orthopedics.

If you (or a loved one or a patient) have TMJ (TemporoMandibular Joint) problems (pain, clicking, and/or decreased opening
of your mouth), this book will walk you through the steps to arrive at a diagnosis. While not written for the layperson,
most people with a strong medical background (and possibly a medical dictionary) will have no problem understanding this book.
Detailed instructions and plenty of pictures set this book apart from other TMJ disorder manuals. Not much on treatment, but this book will help you arrive at a correct diagnosis and a way to objectively track treatment with diagrams.
If you want detailed treatment plans, look elsewhere. But before treatment can begin, the exact nature of the problem should be understood, and this is the book to help you do just that.
Price is high, so be on the look out for a used copy or a good sale.

I also found this book by accident: I was at the library while looking for books about shoulder pain and finger numbness.
I was amazed to find out that my new pain was possibly related to my TMJ. My dentist, who I had once thought was excellent,
sold me a very expensive night guard but never mentioned that a few exercises might immediately ease the pain in my jaw, lessen
my headaches, and give me a sense that there is actually something that I could do to help myself. For helping me to understand
the link between TMJ and other body pain and for giving me some tools to lessen that pain, I give this book 5 stars. (I am
going to suggest to my dentist that he recommend this book to all his TMJ patients.)

It is nice to know that some people got help from this book. I did not, and here is why : The book is badly organized and
the information while helpful is not straigh-forward.
2 years ago, I started having extreme pain chewing, and pain in my molars. I went to the dentist many times who did not find anything wrong with my teeth. I got a mouth guard and went to a oral surgeon and got MRI's etc. Nothing did help. After about 8 months my upper teeth ceased to hurt, but 2 lower rear molars still hurt, 1 even had a root canal and continued to hurt. My problem is tooth pain, and that is why I bought this book. There is little to help with the tooth pain issue in this book, and I once again thought it might be dental and got another root canal. That tooth continues to hurt as well. More trips to the dentist for maliclusion fixes, and examinations for cracked teeth turned up nothing. I have now scheduled an appt with the physical therapist to see if I can find a correlation between TMJ and my tooth pain. I have also visited a neurologist as well as an ENT. No one has any answers. I will try to go the TMJ route again. The pain is so bad I want to resign from my job and live with my parents ( I am 36 mind you).
I am going to try to find another book on Amazon that may help me better. This isn't a terrible book, but didn't help me very much other than to give some hope. There has got to be a better book out there.
Good luck if you are in a similar situation. You have my empathy.

TMJ but not everyone has TMD) I let them read this book for couple weeks and a short follow up visit. Most patients are amazed
how much better they feel by following the instructions from this book. I highly recommend this book. Simple diagram and easy
to read instructions. Patient treat themselves without medication is a wonderful thing!

Hi. I rate this book 1 star not because it is a poorly written book, but to bring to your attention that this book, in regards
to "self help" does not work for everyone.
I bought this book due to all of the 5 star reviews and declarations that individuals found immediate relief from some of the things in this book. I am very happy for their results. I wasn't expecting immediate relief, but I was expecting more effective self-help techniques and less recommendations to go to more doctors and spend more money.
Everything I found in this book I have found numerous times on the internet for free. The self-help area did not work for me. The recommendations to go to different doctors was not what I wanted, as I've already spent $9K on the problem.
It's a well written, informative book if you've done no research on your own about TMJ dysfunction. However, I think you can find everything in this book pretty easily on the internet for free.

I have suffered from night time bruxism (teeth grinding) and daytime jaw clenching for years, with its resultant headaches
and facial/jaw pain. It has always come and gone, usually worsening about a month after a stressor. An acrylic nightguard
worn during sleep used to be all it took to keep the offending behavior at bay, but that has not worked perfectly for the
last year. After a particularly severe bout with all-day facial pain, I was desperate and willing to try anything. For the
price, this CD seemed a reasonable solution to try. I've used it for slightly over one week now. Not only am I sleeping more
soundly and waking more rested, I must be grinding less, because my facial pain is now 90% better...it was slightly better
the morning after the first listen, and it's been improving ever since. Scott's voice is relaxing (though not quite as soothing
as Brit Cherith Powell's voice on the cassette from "The Self-Hypnosis Kit" [which unfortunately does not come in CD form],
which I also recommend), as are the visualizations, and I do prefer his technique of imagining tightening and relaxing various
muscles versus actual muscle movement. I'm not certain a complete cure for bruxism exists, but I am thrilled with my current
level of improvement, and will continue to listen to this CD every night before bed.

I was hoping for a guided meditation CD that was specific to TMJ. However, this CD was simply a nondescript single hypnosis
session. If your unfamiliar with medical hypnosis, this CD will not further your understanding, nor will it explain the process
and benefits of such practices. I would not recommend this CD if your struggling with TMJ.

I was a bit skeptical of this, especially since the first review shown suspiciously echoes the language in the CD's marketing
materials. (Hmm.)But since my $400 nightguard only protects my teeth from the grinding and doesn't actually prevent the grinding
itself, and because I hope to one day be rid of the goofy, unsexy, and uncomfortable apparatus entirely, I thought I'd give
it a try. On first listen, I thought, "OK, yeah, this is just another relaxation/guided meditation thing, with a few jaw images
thrown in." But I did feel more relaxed, and the whole thing takes only about 20 minutes, so I kept using it the next couple
of nights. After 3 nights, I definitely noticed that my jaw and face pain had lessened during the day. I'm not sure if I've
stopped grinding/clenching entirely (I tend to doubt it's 100% gone), although my husband says he doesn't hear it anymore,
but my mouth and teeth feel noticeably better, and I've found that I clench and tighten less during the day too. I should
also mention that my grinding was pretty severe, and I once supposedly chipped a tooth because of it. Anyway, I'd recommend
this CD even if it doesn't cure you 100%, because it does help at least greatly relax the area (and your whole body, actually,
and it's soothing and pleasant to listen to.

It also makes me aware that I am clenching my jaw and other muscles. It hasn't completely eliminated the grinding but I do
feel better in the morning.
I will definitely recommend this long-awaited book for everyone who suffers from headaches and migraines.
