This book appears to be identical to the one that Prevention is bringing out on September 19, 2006. This 2004 edition is by Sari Harrar and Editors of Prevention, and the 2006 edition is by Ann Fannante (sp?) and the Editors of Prevention. The 2006 edition does not say 'revised' or 'updated' or anything like that. Furthermore, in the current edition of Prevention magazine, they have an article that mentions their "new" book with details from its program, but the article is by Sari Harrar!
Huh???
Sometimes I have "issues" with Prevention - but in general think they are a positive force in health-themed publications.
The earlier book by Sari Harrar, et al., is a good resource for a good health regimen.

I found this book to be a lifesaver. I was so addicted to sugar, and had become hypoglycemic, to the point where I was having seizures, if I didn't eat candy or sugar, the moment I started shaking and sweating profusely. I was hungry all the time, gaining weight daily it seemed like, tired all the time, and unable to concentrate. After reading this book, and following the steps for getting off the sugar and replacing it with healthy foods, that didn't let my sugar go up and down. I had no more seizures, lost weight like crazy, I have tons of energy now, and I no longer Crave Sugar 24 hrs a day, nor am I hungry all day long. I feel like I have a life again. Not to mention my risk aren't as high for being coming diabetic, which is what my Doctor told me I surely would have before. Not that I don't have a chance of still becoming one, but before it was a SURE THING.
I definetly recommend this book to anyone who struggles with sugar addiction, like I did. You will feel REBORN!

After renewing it from the library to keep it longer, I decided to buy it. This book gives so much good basic information for eating for diabetes. I gained a greater understanding for food choices in general along with some great recipes. I really love this book.

I read this book cover to cover and recommended it to friends. I cooked some recipes and served them to my pickiest non diabetic friends. They raved about everything but the dessert. They wanted sugar for dessert! I liked that recipes are marked for glycemic index and load. They are easy to make for the uninspired cook. Watch out because occasionally an item will show up in a recipe that wasn't in the ingredients list.

This is a great book. Another great publication from Geddes. I follow the work from the Geddes labs even though it is not my area of expertise. I do raise the question of why Geddes always launches new books with Lakowicz as this must hinder the sales and not promote them. Well done Geddes loose that hanger on.

It's spooky how on-point this book is for people who are sugar-senseitive. Since reading the book, I'm eating more potatoes. :) I'm also eliminating the refined white flour products. However the hard part is giving up sugar and caffeine. This is like giving up breathing and walking. It's a heck of a challenge and I'm hoping the book will get me to do it.

The author does a great job of explaining complex medical concepts simply, and giving a rational basis for her recommendations. Her writing style is very clear and comprehensible.

I wish I'd stumbled across this book years ago! I knew I had a problem with sugar that was unlike other people, but no one really believes in sugar addiction or sugar sensitivity, so I received no help, or even empathy, elsewhere. Some weight loss gurus suggest there is a link to "emotional eating," and urge people to get help with that, but that is an entirely different matter than having a skewed biochemistry. Overall, it was a relief to know what was wrong with me, and what I could do about it. I'm slowly working my way through this program and the results have been almost immediate. I have my life back again, and the depression, quick temper, unproductivity and overly emotional feelings that permeated my life for so long have all but evaporated. I have done a lot to "fix" myself in the past, and now I know why it wasn't working on this problem. Everything fell into place when I read this book. Anyone with this problem will know in the first five pages if this is right for them, and subsequently on every page thereafter. It is worth the small investment, and there is amazing support on the online community as well. At the heart of it all, it is obvious author Kathleen DesMaisons, Ph.D., clearly just wants to help anyone she can. This is another reason the book and program are so powerful.

There are some things that trouble me about this book, like push snacking to mealtime. Hum... and her idea of snacks is what sparks the whole sugar sensitivity process. I like Suzann Somers' book is better; she explains the carbs. This book just tells you to keep track of what you eat, when you eat and how you feel after eating whatever it is you eat. I think you should watch what you eat and you should know what you're eating. This book makes very few explanations about what each food is and how it helps your mind, except by saying eat protein and don't eat refined sugar.

There is a lot of great information here, but a lot of it is sadly out of date. In particular, there's almost nothing related to using Humalog insulin, and I don't know anyone who uses Regular anymore. (In fact, I never did, I used Semi-Lente when they still manufactured it ages ago) At the very least, I was expecting that there would be more detailed discussions of other insulins, but the assumption is that you'll be using regular. Since the information on insulin duration, etc. permeate the information on exercise and most other chapters, I was disappointed that so much of the information is a bit dated. I'd recommend waiting for an update.

A must have for people with Diabetes or related in some way with Diabetes patients. Gaining control in Diabetes is very difficult, specially for those who have a busy life, work, sports etc. Reading this book will help a lot.

Needs updating

This book would have been EXCELLENT several years ago, but it apparently was written before Humalog becamse available and doesn't include this very useful insulin in the control techniques. As a result, it is not very useful. A Second Edition with all the latest techniques would be very worthwhile.

a great book.

This is a one of a kind book for anyone with type 1 diabetes. It teaches how to do carbohydrate counting, how to account for exercise, illness, and unexpected highs and lows.

I hope the authors write an updated version of this book because it is really necessary. It is surprising that there are so few books like this available to diabetics who really have to take care of their disease all by themselves. It is lonely out there and books like this really help.

The most complete book on diabetes I've ever seen

Review Date: 1998-07-08
This book provides a very complete coverage of diabetes. It really is the only book a diabetic will ever need. The thrust of the volume is the tight control of blood glucose which means multiple insulin injection per day in addition to BG readings. This is the flexible insulin therapy which is thoroughly described. The Table of Contents is as follows:

Learning about your diabetes, Taking Control, What you need to know about insulin, Setting your insulin doses, Daily challenges and how to meet them, Blood sugar patterns and solutions, Research insights.

In addition, the book is profusely illustrated with tables and graphs on any conceivable subject. A random sample of these is the Blood Sugar Action Guides, graphing your BG levels, Carb counting, determining the starting dose for insulin, grams of carbohydrate used per hour in common activities, carbohydrate and fat use in continuous exercise, and many more.

I was very disappointed when I opened the book and read various areas seeking current information on insulin production, injection, pumping and diabetic classifications since the changes of 2003. I am now 53 years old. I was diagnosed with diabetes at 38. Due to medical ignorance, rather than adaguate testing, the Adult Onset of high Blood Glucose was treated with oral medication for 5 months. I had no pointers currently recognised for Type 2. Finally it was suggested I might want to consult a specialist familiar with using insulin. He looked at my Log Book and with and overall dailey use of 24 units had me under 150mg/dL as an average reading the same week. This book is very simple, written at a grade school level (at least it used to be grade school) and only treatment of Type 2 with Diet, Exercise, and Oral Medication is set forth with any detail. The general title is deceptive. Barry J. Shiffert

I dissagree with the previous reviewer in one aspect: the book is of no use to you if you already have type II diabetes.

The title is deceptive. If you have Diabetes already, this book will not help you "beat it." The main point of the book is how to "prevent it." The basis for the recommendations provide here are supposedly based on success of the "ground-breaking" Diabetes Prevention Program. Unfortunately, if you want to assess on your own the results of that study, or even a small portion thereof, you are out of luck reading this book; just go to the primary literature.

In short, although the author (Ms Delahanty)does not highly recommend any diet, and reviews a few diets for the reader, the high carb, low fat diet approach appears to be by default the diet of choice. Unfortunately, for us (metabolic syndrome (X-ers)), thrifty gene-types, the low fat/high carb approach has lead us down the path to diabetes. And it is not the "It's the calories, stupid," either, Ms Delahanty. We handle all energy sources uniquely. As many low carb dieters can document, they can easily exceed the caloric intake of your low fat dieters and still loose weight, and most importantly of all, keep their blood sugars low.

For you with diabetes, save your money and check out a number of low -carb diet books on the market, particularly Drs. Bernstein and Atkins, and you will have a much better chance of "Beating Diabetes."

Book review of Beating Diabetes by Dr. David Demko

STOP. Do not read one more thing. Not a newspaper, magazine, or even the back of your cereal box ... until you first read this life-changing book. Hey, the title says, "Diabetes" and you're saying, "well that's not for me." Do yourself a favor and think again. Every household should own this book as a desk-reference for living a longer and (more importantly) healthier life.

Modern medicine is in the throws of a death-grip struggle with the most formidable health crisis in recent history, diabetes. The Center for Disease Control pegs the health costs of America's careless lifestyle habits (poor diet, obesity, lack of exercise) at $176 billion annually. As as result, diabetes is fast becoming your greatest health risk.

Ironically, the more science understands about diabetes, the less and less Americans are applying that knowledge to improving their lifestyle. Nearly 70 percent of adults suffering from adult onset diabetes now risk early death from stroke, heart attack, and kidney failure, say the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists and the American College of Endocrinologists.

The good news is that modern medicine has assembled a formidable resource for combating America's formidable health crisis. That resource is a new book from McGraw-Hill. My review found the book to be the definitive source on diabetes prevention and treatment. Why? The authors employ scientific knowledge in the best way possible. Empowering consumers to take personal responsibility for their wellness by applying the advances of medical science to their everyday lifestyles.

Readers will be delighted to find complex concepts and processes explained in easily understood language enhancing the likelihood for application to daily lifestyle routines. Are you confused about all those diet programs? Excellent reviews of the most popular programs are offered for the reader's consideration. For example, Dr. Phil's "Ultimate Weight Loss Solution Diet" earned high praise, which makes perfect sense because the weight gain on your bottom originates from your top (how you think about food). Additionally, the book's explanation of the difference between "activity" and "exercise" is positively brilliant. A real eye-opener for those who may have been unsuccessful in previous attempts at weight loss and maintenance.

My opinion, the book's greatest value is its central theme. Again and again, the authors empower readers with scientific knowledge, enabling them to make immediate, health-enhancing changes in their lifestyles. Toward that end, here's a list of what I found very useful in the book.
1.How our lifestyle can endanger our health
2.Weight gain myths and realities
3.Reviews of the most popular diet programs, weight-loss plans, and exercise programs
4.Illustrations of therapeutic nutrients composition, and Body Mass Index chart
5.How to get ready to change your lifestyle for the better
6.Appendices of meal plans, recipes, and healthy snacks
By far the best source for healthy lifestyle that I've read in years. Read it, and reap.
