Contraceptive Technology is a must-have reference for anyone interested in birth control. As a freelance medical writer/editor, I have used several revisions of this useful book over the years. I was very pleased when the long-awaited 19th revised edition was finally available. I had preordered the book directly from the publisher, who didn't follow through. Amazon, however, got me the book in record time.

I find this text an excellent source of easy to read information. Every method of birth control/contraception is covered, including fertility based methods, surgical procedures, etc. There is also applicable information in regards to women's health issues and sexuality. Another reviewer stated that this book needs an update; I've heard that another edition is coming out soon and I would imagine that it would include new methods that have become available since the publication of this edition.

I recommend this text to any women's health practitioner.

As parents of teens, aren't we all jumping at the chance to discuss STD's?? seductive delusions gives us a tool to make that job a little easier. While the cover photo and title may suggest an older audience, this book a must read for high school students and their parents. Dr. Grimes has tackled the uncomfortable topic of STD's in a way that is approachable and informative. Her short narrative stories drive home the point that STD's can happen to any of us. The bulleted facts at the end of each chapter focus on prevention and dispel myths. The perfect time for teens to read this book is before they consider becoming sexually active. A great text for high school health classes as well.

Great Tool in Preparing Teenagers Coming of Age

In my days as a teenager my mother would never have spoken of such things, but in today's world it is imperitive that you be informed and inform those you love regarding the dangers they face when coming of age. As I see it, information is essential when coming to a decision, and this book would make a 'Birds and Bees' talk much easier to handle for both parents and their children. Wish I had this information when my boys were growing up. It would have been so much easier to just gift a book and answer questions later than start from scratch.

I could not put this book down!

First, since my wife won't sleep in the same bed after catching me reading a book on STDs, I would suggest men cover "Seductive Delusions" with a copy of "Sports Illustrated" or "Field and Stream". Dr Jill Grimes does an excellent job conveying the deadly serious nature of today's STDs. The characters in her book, like those in a Stephen King horror novel, are all blissfully unaware of the impending tragedy resulting from casual sex. This is a must read for all kids in high school, college, and adults who enjoy "Sex and the City" reruns. If you can't see yourself, your friends, or your children in the attitudes of the people depicted in "Sexual Delusions", then it's time to get out of the convent. Be afraid...Be very afraid!

curriculum is one that should be mandatory in all middle schools
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2007-05-08
How do you teach adolescents to save their own lives? How do you reach through the ideas they have about STDs and their own omnipotence? "EveryBody" is THE curriculum for students in grades 5-9, about HIV, AIDS and STD prevention. This is a powerful guide for teachers, counselors and parents to utilize in making a difference in, and more than likely saving, the lives of today's youth.

Communication, in the fight against HIV and other communicable diseases, is essential between child and adult, teacher and student, and all individuals dealing in possibly unsafe behaviors. How is communication learned? "EveryBody" opens the doors to communication. The activities, meticulously described, spark discussions and discussions encourage empowerment in the individual.

Many lessons are shared in "EveryBody": the specifics of STDs and prevention methods, the generalities of stereotypes, risk taking, reduction and elimination, and so much more. Students will come away with a better understanding of these topics and just as important, a better understanding of themselves.

Some adults may think that "EveryBody" goes beyond what is expected for a 5th-9th grade curriculum. However, "EveryBody" is developmentally appropriate and extensive research shows that is does indeed meet the needs of today's adolescents. Every year in the U.S., half of all new HIV infections occur among people under the age of 25. One in four of new infections occur among those between the ages of 13 and 20. Isn't it best to empower our youth before they become a statistic? The fact is that the majority of American adolescents are sexually active by 12th grade. This is life threatening behavior. Addressing the factors head on is the only way to prevent fatal mistakes.

The curriculum that "EveryBody" is, is not lecture and testing, but rather it is innovative and connected to scientific theory. Students act out the lessons and in essence, become the subject matter. For example, when marker ink, representing infectious bodily fluids, makes its way from student to student, they see point blank, how easily they can become infected, and learn how to prevent that from happening. A fairly simple exercise that will hit home and, in context, will get the message across that HIV prevention is a very serious matter.

The lessons are well written, comprehensive and easily comprehended. The curriculum is one that should be mandatory in all middle schools. Our youth need to learn responsibility for their health and as a parent, I would rather these lessons not be learned the hard way.

We know that communication is critically important and that pre-teens and teens will make better decisions with good information. But discussing subjects that most of us know little about, or find difficult to discuss, with our children is critical. This book is a must for parents, because frankly, is your child's school doing everything they should be doing? Will the teachers be around when your child needs your help? Read the book!! Get informed! And get the tools to be the best parent you can be.

EveryBody is just the sort of honest, compassionate work to open the dialogues we must be having with our middle and high school students. Deborah Schoeberlein did thorough research, not only in HIV risk factors and trasmission, but in educational models so that teens will listen. School districts, youth groups, health classes need EveryBody.

One of the unique aspects of the Everybody model is that is very interactive and help youth to be fully engage in the learning process. I am using Everybody Curriculum in my skills building training with youth. I found students really learn a lot about this disease, their own attitudes toward prevention and how to be respectful of their lives.

Sinners or Patients?
Helpful Votes: 10 out of 11 total.
Review Date: 2000-05-05
In _The Wages of Sin_, Peter Allen has provided a broad, brilliant, and beautifully-written overview of the long and complex relationship between religious and cultural values and the definition and social perceptions of disease. Organized as a series of case studies of particular diseases--including plague, syphilis, masturbation, and AIDS--the book teaches us that Western culture has a long tradition of ambivalence in caring for the victims of diseases for which we have decided that victims' lifestyles are at least partially responsible. By casting his net widely to include masturbation, Allen has been able to discuss not just the moral components of disease diagnosis and treatment, but also the medicalization of specific behaviors. While the reader will be left with many questions about the details of the history of these diseases, Allen has given us a compelling and readable introduction to the issues underlying the current AIDS crisis. The section on AIDS is both a balanced overview of a very messy debate, and an eloquent call to action. This text is a valuable contribution to the literature on the history of medicine, and to public discussion of the moralization of disease and the effects of that process on patients.

Catholic compassion
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2000-06-22
This gripping book raises far-reaching questions about what Roman Catholic teach. It fits nicely with two other books this year -- John Portmann's When Bad Things Happen to Other People and Garry Wills's Papal Sins. All three make us wonder about the state of Catholicism today and how it will it respond to such powerful criticism.

Portmann examines Bernard Haring's account of illness. Haring is the most important Catholic moral theologian of the twentieth century; the Catholic culture Lewis fleshes out culminates in Haring, whose thinking about illness was remarkably sophisticated. Even someone as modern as Haring allows a link between illness and sin. Haring gives permission to celebrate the suffering of others who have broken God's law. Both Lewis and Portmann seem to think of Judaism as generally more compassionate than Catholicism. This point could be debated.

Wills turns to the question of whether Rome has responded compassionately to gay and lesbian people. You can guess what Wills thinks, just on the basis of the title of his penetrating book. Lewis looks much more closely at sexuality and sexual sins than Wills does. Who doesn't find the topic of sexual sins worthwhile?

The three books have just come to light. Like others that have preceded them, they make us wonder how Rome will respond to serious analyses of Catholic compassion.

The Wages of Sin is part philosophy, part religious studies, part cultural studies. It is interesting through and through.

A Fascinatng and Unique View of History
Helpful Votes: 6 out of 7 total.
Review Date: 2000-07-20
Peter Allen takes three of the most compelling aspects of human history--sex, disease, and religion--and weaves them together in a fascinating exposition of how religious authorities in the West have viewed disease since the late Middle Ages. His book discusses the histories of lovesickness, leprosy, syphilis, plague, masturbation, and of course AIDS. For each disease (and yes, masturbation was considered a serious disease well into the 20th Century!), he discusses how sex, and the sins associated with it, figured into the religious and popular views of illness. Allen's book is meticulously researched (he read texts in the original French, Latin, German, and Italian) and elegantly written. It is a far easier read than most academic works. Most importantly, it offers insight into how religious and sexual intolerance can hamper the fight against disease, even in today's world.

I have just finished reading Damaged Goods? and I highly recommend it. This well researched book provides a fascinating and informative read into the lives of women with chronic sexually transmitted diseases. Adina Nack, through her sophisticated analysis, gives voice to a population that largely remains silent in today's society. While herpes and HPV affect millions of Americans, they are topics that are rarely discussed. The impact of this book should not be limited to people who share the condition, as this book can also provide valuable insight for both clinicians in the field and the general public. One can only hope that exploring the concerns and challenges faced by women with these conditions will help not only others with herpes and HPV, but also assist in decreasing the stigma surrounding the conditions.

Must-read for anyone diagnosed with HPV or herpes!

If you or a loved one has been diagnosed with one of these STDs, then this is the first book to read! It's detailed, without being too academic. The women's stories are compelling, and the author really makes you think about how harmful those stereotypes about STDs can be, especially those about the types of women who get STDs. I also appreciated the author's honesty in revealing her own struggles with HPV.

As a mother of a young woman living with HPV, this book helped me understand her feelings and fears. Whether your daughter is 13 or 30, this is a must read for parents. After sharing this book ,we were able to sit down and begin a dialogue. Her mood swings and anger that had been directed at me were really symptoms of her trying to cope with her diagnosis. I didn't realize how alone and "damaged" my daughter felt. Our relationship is so much stronger now.

... definitely an emotional roller coaster ride for the reader. Fast-paced, and an easy read that was anything BUT easy to put down. I found myself wanting to shout, "No, don't do it!" to Betty, the book's main character, as I knew she was about to make a terrible mistake. This is an excellent, thought-provoking, plot by a new author, who also seems to know her way around Las Vegas, where the story is set. Worth taking a ride in this red truck.

The Man in the Red Truck conveys the story of a widowed woman who deeply grieves the sudden death of her husband who was her true love. As time passes she thinks she has found someone to fill the void within her soul but this only at the sight of him and in her fantasies. At last her eventual encounter with him gradually leads to great mental and physical pain. She never again will know the feel of the fulfillment that she knew with her departed love. This book is a very deep feeling story and it kept me interested and eager to learn the outcome. It has an ending I did not expect. This book as titled is indeed about the Indiscretions of an Older Woman.

I believe this was a great book, it provided a lot of needed information on stds, the contraction of certain disease, etc. It was almost like a reference guide to me. It made me feel much better after i had gained all the needed knowledge. STD'S are one of those "quiet diseases", that nobody really talks about...However,you have to get your information from somewhere, right?....So why not get it from a reliable source with a huge layout of information.(even pictures) So, all in all i rate this book a 5, i doubt it could throughly describe std's any better then it did.
