Great illustrations and very straight forward approach to viewing and handling many orthopedic xray images. For the price, it is indeed one book that all medical students should have. In 10 years of my practice, it is the one radiology book that I turn to the most.

The best basic radiology reference I've encountered for those of us who aren't regularly interpreting Xrays but need to have a systematic approach that will work for us when we need it. It provides a guide for analyzing an X-ray in a step-by-step fashion and gives relevant pointers regarding subtle findings that you don't want to miss and common pitfalls. Contains lots of useful (and clearly reproduced) sample Xrays.

Superb pocket reference

Excellent content and organisation with high quality pictures. Useful size to carry to work and will no doubt make an A&E term or beginning of radiology training much easier. I particularly liked the summary at the end of each chapter for take-home points.
Obviously not the most in-depth reference but at this size and price it is an excellent supplement to a larger text. Not too sure how I survived a year of A&E without it...!

Subtitled "Victorian Scientific Travelers," this book tells the story of a handful of 19th Century British scientists, all naturalists, who, through their researches in the field in many different places around the world, helped Darwin advance his theories of evolution. The accounts are interesting: we get Darwin, of course, but also Sir Joseph Hooker in the Himalayas, Alfred Wallace in the Amazon and on the Malayan Archipelago, Henry Bates also in the Amazon, Richard Spruce in the Amazon and the Andes, Richard Lander and Heinrich Barth in Africa, Mary Kingsley in Africa, and Marianne North in Borneo. All were fearless, resourceful, and dedicated scientists/collectors of plant and animal species from the areas they explored. Thousands of new species of flora and fauna were first identified by these intrepid people. Raby covers a lot of ground by telling about each of these scientists (and others as well) succinctly and directly. He also attempts to explain the times in which these scientists worked as people tried to come to grips with Darwin's implications. A fascinating and important book.

Excellent History of an Exciting Time!

I've always had a weak spot for the history of science and exploration, so when I discovered this book, I went weak in the knees. We all know Darwin and Cook, but what about Russell and Spruce? Here are the true heroes of science from the days when gaps in your knowledge weren't just unfortunate, they could get you killed! Excellently written, with a mountain of information for the scholar, historian and casual reader. Get it now!

"Bright Paradise: Victorian Scientific Travellers" gives a refreshing glimpse into the scientific travellers and explorers of The Victorian Age. It covers the well-known (Darwin, Wallace, and Hooker) to those overlooked and nearly forgotten travellers like the botanical painter Marianne North. It is written without any academic pretentiousness and is ideal for introductory courses in cultural anthropology and European History of the 1800s. The only fault with this book is that it is too short.

Small Town Politics

Having grown up in small town New England, I really enjoyed Return to Raby. The experiences of Nelson Palmer as he returns to investigate his small town roots and finds himself on the outside of the established village bureacracy accurately depicts the situation in many small New England towns as "Out-of-Staters" move into town and begin to outnumber the entrenched natives.

As Palmer begins to delve more deeply into the history of the town, he makes several discoveries which change his life and the life of the town. With his opposition to the town fathers, other residents gain the confidence to state their opposition as well. As a mysterious benefactor begins to effect change in the community, the townspeople begin to accept and expect change in attitudes.

As the story builds to its conclusion, more information is unearthed about the true beginnings of the town.

I would recommend this novel to anyone looking to curl up by the fire with a good book. Additionally, because of the part that genealogical research plays in the story line, genealogists will enjoy this story of the ways in which documented history may play in shaping present-day decision making.

If you have ever lived in a small rural town you will certainly be able to relate to and appreciate Jack Polidoro's latest novel, RETURN TO RABY. If you have not had this living experience, Polidoro's novel will enlighten you as to just what you have been missing! Polidoro's novel is based on the reality of a small New Hampshire town that comes alive page after page and truly shows how rural life can be. Having lived in a "Raby"like town myself, I could relate to the story first hand. I passed the book on to friends who have never been out of the city and the book was equally enjoyable to them! This story will make you laugh and bring tears to your eyes. You will be left will a warm feeling and a positive outlook on life. This is truly a wonderful story!

For all of us who have grown up in small towns, we know that the closed door policy of the old time citizens is the way that 'deals are made.' For newcomer, Nelson Palmer, a man in search of his family history, he learned the hard way that the 'only way is the right way' on how to restore pride and inspiration to a town. Reading Jack Polidoro's new novel, "Return To Raby" will captivate you and have you reading page after page until the very last word. It is a story that could and probably did happen someplace along the way in many New England villages. Having loved Jack's two previous works, Rapid Descent: Disaster in Boston Harbor, and Project Samuel-The Quest for the Cennential Nobel Prize, I know that much of what he weaves into his fictitious stories are what he knows and who he is. So the town of Harvest, New Hampshire intrigued me as I kept wondering, who are these real people and what really occurred to have this author tell his tale. I highly recommend "Return To Raby" to those who are spellbound by a great mystery story with love, death and new beginnings for all.

A must for any textile lover

This is an outstanding book, an art object by itself and a serious scientific monography on Ottoman silk textiles of XVI to XVIII cent. CAUTION : no carpets, kilims or embroidery !Marvellous full-page color photos of about 150 silk specimens from the leading world collections plus many more b/w photos; all with descriptions. Very nice text, easy to read by non-professionals : history of Ottoman silk production, techniques, trade, history etc. etc. The only book matching the high standard of the " Ipek" seems to me " Seidengewebe des XVII jahrhunderts : Bizarre Seiden " by H.Ch. Ackermenn, Abegg_Stiftung, Bern, Switzerland.
The IPEK book is a jewel in my collection of textile books. I recommend it, the only flaw is that it does not show vestments or costumes in full, only close-ups.

The silks and velvets featured in Ipek are amazing in their detail, brilliant color, and craftsmanship. I found it particularly interesting that Ottoman textile and Iznik tile designs were often identical - although not even Iznik tiles can compare with the textiles in Ipek.

One caveat: The essays are well researched and have interesting themes, but are as dry as July in Tucson.

Very enjoyable. A clear and enthralling presentation of an exciting discovery. The real difficulty experienced by Louis Pasteur's contemporaries in comprehending the danger of from an almost invisible source is particularly well drawn. The resources section is also very useful and leads to other intriguing scientific subjects.

As an adult in the education field, I found this book not only engrossing and suspenseful, but informative, well-structured and clear. It's a fantastic and painless introduction to Pasteur and to the history of medicine, told in an engaging narrative that is bound to inspire both boys and girls alike. I liked it so much I donated a copy to the local library.

Farwell to the Younguns

Review Date: 2008-01-02
I read all of The Younguns books by T.L. Tedrow when they first came out, and eagerly awaited the release of each new title--with one wait being over a decade now (more on that later). The books are about mischievous siblings without a mom, who are pretty much left to their own devices by their father, a well-meaning but busy Reverend.

It has been a huge disappointment that, not only did the series go out of print, but it was never finished. There were even, if I recall correctly, rumors of a television show. It appears that a total of at least eight books were planned, but only four seem to have made it to press. Hopefully one day the books will be republished and the series completed. It remains a mystery as to what caused the demise of what was promising to be an amazingly funny and enjoyable series for all ages. Thanks to Amazon, you can buy used copies of this series and at least enjoy the first four books of this unfinished symphony.

I absolutly loved the book!

I thought the book "The Younguns of Mansfield was terrific. I always have trouble finding something wrong with the stories about the Youguns, and this time I could not find anything wrong. I thought it was wonderfuly written and had a practically flawless storyline.
