As a resident in dermatology, I can strongly recommend this book. It provides concise thorough chapters on many aspects psoriasis, including its different clinical manifestations. Perhaps of most use are the chapters on treatment which summarise very well how to use the oral immunosupressive medications, retinoids, tar, light and more. Highly recommended for 1st and 2nd years.

As a full time Phototherapist in a busy Dermatology practice, I find "The Handbook of Psoriasis; Second Edition", indispendable. After reading Dr. Camisa's book I find myself able to provide better patient care, through an increased insight into the disease that the majority of my patients suffer from. I also highly recommend this book to my patients as a tool through which they can better understand and control their conditon, as it is written in such a manner that both the professional and patient can gather valuable, useful information.

A must for anyone who call's him/herself a dermatologist

I read the entire book cover to cover in one week, and I will now keep it in my clinic jacket. The content was succinct, thorough, and up to date. The writing style made reading easy, and the format will allow for quick referencing. Finally, there is an affordable, comprehensive source providing clear guidelines for treating complex psoriasis with high risk medications.

An excellent addition to any Dermatologists bookshelf

The Handbook of Psoriasis would make an excellent addition to any Dermatologist's bookshelf. Concise and complete, this reference provides current and pertinent information on all aspects of psoriasis ranging from classification and genetics to pathology and treatment. The chapters pertaining to treatment are especially comprehensive and would definitely assist the clinician in the treatment of this often frustrating illness, regardless of their career level. I was very impressed by the discussion on the immunosuppressant and retinoid drugs. Nebulous topics in most texts, Camisa eloquently clarifies the most essential factors regarding the use of these drugs(critical information that will be valuable not only for psoriasis but other dermatological disease entities as well). A definite "keeper" of a book which I highly recommend.

I got this book from someone recommending it on an eczema message board. I read it and it made so much sense with the toxins coming out through your skin.

The diet and treatments in this book heal both eczema (which is what I have) and psoriasis.

After about 4 months my skin was clear and I didn't itch any more.

I highly recommend this book to anyone that has psoriasis or eczema...it really does work!

This Book is really Great!!

I bought this book, and have shown it to others. They also thought this book was very good information. I gave it to a friend for her daughter that has psoriasis, so I just ordered another one for myself. I can't wait to get it. If the writer of this book reads this, I just want to Thank Her...

I read this book within a matter of days, it's perfect for the beach or if your pennies don't stretch that far then you should read it with a box of chocolates and a glass of wine within easy reach. You will not be able to think about anything else until you have finished it, and even then thoughts will keep popping into your head.

About the best book Dr Walker has ever written. This will always be his classic masterpiece, his epitaph even.

Bravo!

A stunning text that delivers the scientific insight expected from a Dr Walker publication. The revelation here though, and in essence what separates this book from others, is the development of the scientist (and one time 'enfant terrible' of Psychology!) as a story teller. One hesitates to use the word genius - a term all too frequently applied in these celebrity obsessed times - but history will certainly look upon this title very favourably.

If you only read one dermatology self help book this year, then make sure that it's this one!

An excellent handbook for people with psoriasis ...
Helpful Votes: 9 out of 10 total.
Review Date: 1996-10-23
This is a small handbook for psoriasis patients, using language that any high school graduate can understand. Numerous illustrations and case summaries help explain what psoriasis is, how it is triggered, and how it can be treated. Each chapter concludes with a list of "Facts to Remember" that highlights do1s and dont1s for the patient. Especially notable is the concluding chapter, "It's Up To You," which encourages the reader to take a pro-active role in controlling the disease. Also notable is the chapter on "Total Care," which emphasizes the importance of each patient1s general health and lifestyle as they relate to his or her psoriasis. As one who has struggled with psoriasis for 35 years, I am especially glad to have so much valuable information summarized in one small book. Even more important, I believe, is the overall message: that we patients are capable of understanding the basics of psoriasis, and with optimism and persistance, can do a great deal to help ourselves. Dermatologists should present this book to every psoriasis patient over 12 years of age, especially in this era of managed care. Three minutes with the doctor and another prescription simply cannot provide the information and encouragement that are so important to psoriasis patients.

Cured me
Helpful Votes: 9 out of 9 total.
Review Date: 2006-12-12
I read the book, followed the advice and had a MAJOR outbreak clear in about 3-4 months.

I had immediate benefits within the first few days as the psoriasis sores were lest inflammed and then slowly began to fade until 99% gone within 4 months.

I drank tea, took hot Epsom salt baths a few times per week. Pretty near eliminated alcohol and nightshade vegetables. I went to my naturopathic doctor and got a few other supplements as well. I started taking fish oil, fiber and a good multi-vitamin daily. I also reduced the amount of white bread and flour I consumed.

In the 4 months I went from 205Lbs to my HS weight of 185Lbs. My blood presure went from borderline high to IDEAL.

I wish I would have stayed on the diet because I have regained the weight and blood presure although the psoriasis remains cleared after almost 3 years.

You are what you eat. We have such crappy diets in America and we wonder why we get sick? If you fed your plants or pets the kind of corporate food products most of us eat, they'd be unhealthy as well. We just don't make the connection until you get an illness.

This book provides a simple way to heal yourself. I highly recommend it.

This book is a fine introduction to coping withpsoriasis. Unlike the top-selling psoriasis books that claim auniversal "cure" with some specific diet, this book hasno-nonsense practical information. It acknowledges what many patientswith psoriasis know, that "What works for one person may donothing for the next". It covers the specrum of traditionaltreatments and offers many useful tips...

If you are an adult with Psoriasis - you know that one of the major suffering is trying to get treatment that is effective and does not create other side effect conditions. Once I was asked to sign a release form for treatment that freed the practitioner from resposibility for the possibility of my contracting liver cancer. When I refused to sign the nurse told me point blank that if she had my condition she would risk any illness to get rid of it. This doctor was a well known pioneer of main stream treatments used today.

"Psoriasis" by Hilary Bower brings together current knowledge in a precise way. It is written more from a European point of view and combines information from drug technology, therapeutic practises, nutrition, mental and emotional health, homeopathy, and accupressure. This is a slim book of 134 pages that has helped bring together what I have learned from my own experience and research, my visits to some 20 or more medical doctors and about ten years of seeing around ten alternative practioners. I found it in the library and now I am buying it, because I need it with me daily to learn to be healthy.

I have had psoriasis since I was 13 years old and work in a healthcare environment; thus, a lot of the information in this book was not new to me. It is presented in a very clear, well organized format and a good basic reference to have. For someone who is newly diagnosed or knows nothing about psoriasis, this book is a must!

Vitamin D: The ultimate medical breakthrough of the past decade
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2008-06-22
This is a technical book on vitamin D. Dr. Holick is a pioneer on this subject. He led the way in this field since 1990s. I came across vitamin D by pure serendipity. I realized how rudimentary was the medical knowledge on vitamin D presented in medical books. Up to this date, this new knowledge has not made it into the curricula of medical schools.
Then I came across an article that was published by Dr. Holick in The Lancet "Redefining vitamin D deficiency" in 1998.
Since then, I never looked back and this new knowledge on vitamin D changed the way I practice medicine and my patients are grateful for it.

In this book, you will learn that vitamin D is not only to enhance bone density, but it is also a vital vitamin to maintain muscle strength, mass (to prevent falls), and that vitamin D has a vital role in preventing most cancers and preventing auto-immune disorders such as type 1 diabetes, mutiple sclerosis.
A recent study on telomerase has found that vitamin D might even enhance longevity.

If you feel tired, and suffer from chronic fatigue, aches and pains, and "everything" has been checked and "normal", it is time your doctor checked 25, hydroxy vitamin D to make sure that your vitamin D is between 32-100 ng/ml and that you are taking adequate vitamin D.
This book is written for doctors, clinicians, and researchers.
