This is the book I have turned to over and over again as I stumble my way through my own adoption reunion. The stories of search and discovery are varied enough to touch on many potential issues any searcher may encounter. This is a comforting and yet realistic view of adoption searches, and a must-read for anyone contemplating or in the midst of a search.

A friend of mine recommended this book and although I am not an adoptee, I was intrigued by what she shared about the book. I am glad that I read it. If you're like me and you enjoy the search for a happy ending, you'll enjoy reading "Back to the Beginning." First and foremost, the accounts of adoptees searching for their birth families and vice versa was riveting; however, what I liked most about the book was the way the authors seemed genuinely interested in their clients emotionally. I thought the advice they gave to their clients was very sound; particularly the advice about approaching first time meetings between families, as well as how to manage their expectations about the process and its possible roads blocks. I counsel people every day in my job, so I'm sure what I read in this book will be woven into my practice somehow. Even if it's not, I'll be keeping this book on hand for those moments when I need a feel-good pick me up read...as well as a little perspective on how nice and easy my childhood was knowing my birth parents and siblings.

The warmth and sensitivity of these wonderful women comes through on every page. I've read it twice and recommend it to every single person involved in the adoption process. Then I'd recommend it to every person outside of the process. It's heartwarming and insightful. I wish I had known them when I searched for my birth family, or at the very least, had their book.

Easily read and understood book. Kids don't like being bad and this book explains why, because of their reactions to their environment, they can't help it. It addresses the reasons, not the symptoms, of poor performance. Great book for parents who care to give their children the best possible chance in life. Not for parents who just want to give their child a pill. This book's content will become common knowledge in the future as parents demand more out of the medical field.

This guidebook is an essential reference for teachers, parents, and anyone who deals with kids on a regular basis. The prevalence of ADD diagnoses should lead us all to question what the bigger picture is. Allergy problems are one of the most important consequences of our modern world. This guidebook is designed to help laypeople spot allergies in kids, especially the kids who act up. It's a shame to drug kids with Ritalin when dietary or environmental changes can give better results without turning children into zombies. To ignore the accomplishments of Environmental Medicine would be foolish.

There is a lot of detail packed into this small book to help parents and teachers understand food, environmental, and chemical allergies, and to spot them on their own. Helpful advice is provided for different diets that can reveal a lot about a troubled child's behavior. Diagnostic diets (elimination diets) are detailed as well as rotation diets to minimize food reactions. Descriptions of children's allergic responses are detailed and accurate, making it easier for you to know how to spot allergies in kids.

Though this low-budget publication is written by a doctor and not a writer, it is not overly technical in style. The writing is to-the-point, a how-to manual for your potentially allergic kid, full of suggestions, case studies, and references. Dr. Rapp is an expert in the field of pediatric environmental medicine in the tradition of Theron Randolph MD, and her experience is apparent. Though I know there are better treatments than extracts for allergies (her recommendation, in addition to dietary and/or environmental changes), it is still a vast improvement over drugs and allergy shots. Her diagnostic methods are also not the best known, but still better than the more mainstream methods she also details in this guide. To be critical, this is not a guide to the most cutting-edge diagnosis or treatment in modern allergy medicine, but it's a vast improvement over more mainstream approaches of Ritalin, steroids, and other drugs. Every parent of an ADD-type child needs this book!

This book is essential for anyone who thoroughly enjoys a deep, hearty belly-laugh. This is truly enjoyable - even if you have no military experience or background. The author takes you on an amusing, eventful journey through his life and gives plenty of ideas for mischievous souls.

The secret behind authentic German Dorfenburgs, eaten in mass quantities by American troops, is revealed, along with why coconut-milk toasts in your underwear is a wonderful way to pass the time on a train ride. The adventures of owning a DKW car and the never-ending excitement in Thule, Greenland is wittingly uncovered - and makes you glad you didn't have the experience! Of course, this is only a portion of the journeys you encounter, and plenty more await, with laughter guaranteed.

There is, at least, a good belly laugh on every page! Easily the funniest book I've read in years, and one which I began to savor the experience by purposely slowing down so as not to end the ride too soon. This one has found a permanent spot in my bookcase, and one which I plan to periodically re-read.

Reading "Growing Up In Khaki" was a delightful, but fraught experience. Delightful because Allingham's comedic reportage hits the spot from the first pages. His tales have the same rare ability as Bill Bryson's to invoke paroxysms of laughter from this stern Brit. countenance. The military life merely provides the author with a powerful opportunity to express his wit, and Allingham seizes the chance and provides an account with universal appeal. Fraught, because living in a household of six, and being unable to hide my obvious amusement after reading a few pages, I found, the book kept mysteriously disappearing only to be tracked down later by listening for the self-incriminating culprit.

I first encountered this book while working on my masters degree in counseling. It was one of the required "text books" for my Child Development Class. I have used the principles presented in the book with my own children with great success, and have recommended it to many other parents. As a guidance counselor in a grade 7 throught 12 school, I continue to recommend this book to the parents of our students who need some practical advice on changing their child's behavior in a positive way. Patterson provides straight forward, easy to understand strategies which are easily implemented by average parents -- no psycholygy degrees reguired.

A time tested classic resource for parents.

Living with Children gives a clear, concise explanation of reinforcement principles as applied to child behavior management. This book belongs in every parent's resource library along with Your Child's Self-esteem and Why Children Misbehave and What to Do About.

Are you a new parent hoping to raise a well-behaved child from the start? An experienced parent trying to correct day-to-day behavior problems in your son or daughter? A teacher or coach struggling to manage a group of children, or improve the behavior of an unruly child? This short, easy-to-read guide is the best I've found at presenting basic behavioral management principles in a clear, simple, and engaging manner.

Although the book is directed at parents, many others will find it useful. The first few chapters, such as "Social Learning," "How Can We Use Reinforcers?" "Children Train Parents," and "Retraining," make basic concepts clearly understandable to anyone learning them for the first time, and remind those who are well versed in learning theory of the sometimes-overlooked principles important in practical applications. The concept of Accidental Learning (or Training) is especially useful to anyone trying to correct misbehavior.

As a Clinical Psychologist I have used this book with parents seeking help in changing the misbehavior of their children, and with teachers learning to manage the behavior of difficult students in the classroom. I have also found it useful in reminding myself, as a mother, to keep basic principles in mind while raising my own children. It should be required reading for every parent!

I used this book in a Parenting class I went to in the early 80's. I had 3 kids - all boys - in 4 years and this book helped me to discipline without yelling or getting angry at my children. People who didn't know us always commented how well behaved my children were. The book was invaluable to us as a family.

I have been using this book in a course I teach for families since it first came out in the '70's. The practical information and easy-to-implement suggestions contained in it are timeless. Although the strategies are entirely uselful for parents of any child, this book is particularly helpful for parents with children whose behavior is difficult to manage, whose children have language processing disorders, or other learning difficulties.

Pliny (23-79 AD.) "If a man makes water upon a dog's urine he will become disinclined to copulation." (Yeah, but what about the Dog?) He also suggests that; "If a woman's loins are rubbed with blood taken from the ticks upon the back of a black wild bull, she will be inspired with an aversion to sexual intercourse. (Yes, and so too, the tick gatherer, and tick blood spreader - I would imagine.)
This book The Pill by Bernard Asbell besides being full of useful and energizing information is more than interesting. It is a social as well as a religious experience. One thing is for certain - trying not to have babies has been going on for centuries; thank God.

I almost couldn't put this book down and read it in a few days. Asbell does a really good job of making the story of the Pill at once comprehensive and entertaining. He develops all the various characters involved in the story: priests, scientists, activists, doctors, funders of research and ordinary citizens in a way that makes gives you a sense of familiarity with their personalities and psychologies. He shows how risk taking, serendipity, and passion led some to succeed and left others virtually anonymous. He gives fair treatment to many of scientific disputes that went on during the invention of the pill and introduces us to the future of contraception. The way he describes science is very accessible and also honest; he does not idolize scientists or science and shows the pitfalls involved in research.
I don't think I fully appreciated how revolutionary the Pill was before I read this book. It has made me much more grateful and informed about the options I can now make. He presents the story with the gravity it deserves.

This is a pretty good book and doesn't deserve to be out of print. The author's writing technique isn't scintillating but the book is very readable nonetheless. I was a little disappointed by the lack of biochemical details of how the pill works but other readers may see this as a blessing. The book does a superb job of making the people involved come alive. The descrption of a pre-birth control pill world which is unimagable to most people is simiarly excellent.

This is a great resource for professionals who treat and work with females with AD/HD, females with AD/HD, and parents of females with AD/HD. Though the book may be intended for professionals, the setup of the book is very ADD Friendly and the language is easy to understand.

I think reading this book will be very benefical to women with AD/HD and family members of females with AD/HD. It may put females ahead of the game when they seek treatment for AD/HD. It may give them a better idea of whether the professional who is treating them acutally understands AD/HD.

Females who are currently in treatment for AD/HD should consider asking the professional treating her if he or she has read this book. If the answer if no it may be in her best interest to suggest that he or she does.

You cannot go wrong with any book by Drs. Nadeau and Quinn, including this one. It is primarily an in-depth guide for clinicians who treat women with ADHD. But, in my experience, clinicians' guides often provide the most helpful books to read before you begin the search for an ADHD specialist. Once you know the recommended protocols, such guides provide a benchmark by which to judge a potential therapist's or doctor's expertise.

Quinn and Nadeau are highly respected pioneers in the detection and treatment of ADHD in women and girls. And if you've found that most healthcare professionals are undereducated on ADHD in general, wait until you learn how little they know about the unique angle gender takes. ADHD not only might manifest differently in females, but there are also other psychological and physical issues, such as hormonal cycles and pregnancy, to consider. And this information is found literally nowhere else.

I also recommend their other books on this subject, including "Understanding Women with ADHD," "Understanding Girls with ADHD," and "When Moms and Kids have ADD."

That said, their expert knowledge extends well beyond female ADHD into all aspects in both genders and throughout the lifespan. Together or individually, they have contributed many helpful standouts to the ADHD library and are popular speakers at national conferences.

This is an excellent primer on behavior modification--that is, rewarding a child for his or her good choices and withholding privileges for lack of compliance with basic family requirements. It is, as the previous reviewer suggested, not just for families with "troubled" children.

The book was suggested to us many years ago, and although it is itself more than 30 years old, the lessons here are timeless. As our source noted when referring us to this text, it should be required reading for every parent, and prospective parent.

In addition to outlining behavior modification techniques, the book provides excellent suggestions as to how to otherwise "reinforce" the good behaviors and discourage the bad ones.

This is a great book for all parents.

FAMILIES has been around a long time, but it is still the book I us most when working with troubled families. Based upon social learning theory FAMILIES presents a clear, consise explaination of how problem behaviors are created, and how they can be extinguished. Written in simple language, any literate parent can understand the simple but profound lessons contained in this book. During my 20 years as a social worker and educatior I have purchased numerous copies of this book and handed them out to parents who are struggling with their children. I use FAMILIES primarily to help parents who are having problems with their children, but I recommend it to all parents. In a kind way the book illustrates how troubled children are sometimes created by parental mistakes.

Navigating your way through a step/blending family can end in disaster without the proper tools and knowledge. I was on the edge of that cliff until we ran across a whole new way of acting/thinking in this new family. Don and Jenetha Partridge's book, Loving Your Stepfamily, guides you through five basic principles that you will find challenging, mind blowing, and most effective in your relationships within the step/blending family universe. Yes universe! It's an entirely different realm of relationships. Understanding the bonds between these relationships is crucial if you want your new family to succeed. I highly recommend this book for not only those in this new family dynamic but for those who may be entering, or thinking about entering one. Do not take the idea of entering into a new multi-faceted family lightly. This new information will challenge you in ways you could never imagine. "The Art of Making Your Blending Family Work"; yes it is an art, applying the five principles: UNDERSTAND, IDENTIFY, ACCEPT, SEPERATE AND BENEFIT to your daily life. Creating a masterpiece takes practice, time and conscious effort. Practice these principles daily. Time is a component in change, don't be discouraged about changes in others in the near future but concentrate on what you can do about the circumstances at hand. Take courage and realize that change is a valuable tool. What's great about these principles is that it only requires YOU to act on them to see results. Apply these principles with every relationship in your new family and watch the changes; disarm your ex-spouse, learn how to encourage the God-given bonds in your children/step children and give them something that will build them up as capable adults and watch the rewards come back to you in time. I can say with certainty, if you're delving into this new universe for he first time you will find radically new information in this book that you may never realize otherwise. Read it. Live it. Share it.

The concept of this book deals with an ever increasing problem in our society- anger and violence. This is an excellent book in that it outlines very clearly the definition of violence and gives pertinent resources for the resolution of violence.

It is a must read for ALL WOMEN because: it empowers them to recognize an abusive relationship before becoming to involved with an abuser and deters them from accepting abuse, it provides information and guidance for those who are involved in an abusive relationship, and empowers them to leave, lastly, it gives information on how abuse not only affects the individual, but children and eventually society.

This book is a great contribution to anger and violence awareness and to the eradication of such an evil.

Looking back on my Sociology class in college, I have discovered that this would have been a GREAT resource book to accompany my text. The author has organized an ideal characterization of an abuser and his victim. Perhaps through reading this book, many potential dependent women will become independent and their eyes will be open to the factors contributing to being physically, mentally, and or sexually abused. There are wonderful charts and diagrams (Venn) regarding the mental and physical factors of the abuser and the victim. The author has done a very good job in identifying the "cycle" of abuse. So many victims have closed their eyes to what they know as reality and choose to believe what is false. The section on "The cycle of abuse" was very informative. In closing, this was an informative, eye-opening reality check that must be read by all.
