This book is an inspiration...esp. if you are dealing with very difficult children. Mary McCracken is the first to admit she isn't perfect, but she did a FABULOUS job with her children!!! She changed their lives.

I recommend this book to anyone who is interested in Child Psychology, Early Childhood Ed, Teaching, Counseling young children, pediatrics, or anything else in the field of taking care of children.

I thought the book Lovey, A Very Speical Child was a very inspiring book! It is really hard for me to get interested in a book but this one really held my attention. Reading about the things that happened in Hannah's life made me have many emotions. It made me feel so happy for Hannah that she was making progress, and I loved how the boys enjoyed watching her do so also. Her home life frustrated me alot because I did not like how her family brought her down on herself so much. Mary was an excellent teacher for these children, and she knew her ways with them. Hannah made my heart melt when she gave her two teeth and the picture of the heart to Mary. I did not want the kids to leave on the last day because it made me cry knowing that their teacher would not be back for them next year. This book made me feel good inside that these children were getting help and support from someone who cared much about them.

Out of print? Sure, but why let that get in your way

I read it and loved it!

I have just the faintest memories of this made-for-TV-movie coming on when I was just three or four years old. Having spent my first three years of school in similar special education classes as those described in this book, it made all those memories come flooding back -- all the sights, sounds, smells, and happenings. This book made memories that had been locked away for over twenty years come alive once again. This book made me remember my own special education teacher, a sweet and brave woman who devoted her life to her kids.

My other reason for loving this book so much is that I am now helping a second grader at my church with similar problems as the kids in this book. I'm pleased to say that all of the techniques Mary MacCracken used to reach Hannah (Lovey) in this book have worked for me in the short time (just under a year) I've been working with this kid.

It's true that this is a very out-of-print book. But it's actually very easy to find and can be found in most used bookstores.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who works with children.

Gotta Read It!

A book for all parents of a child with Cerebral Palsy

The case of Jimmy is not so rare. As a 41 year old man with CP, my story is not very different than Marie Kennedy's son. I also walked with canes, attended public schools, and have no speech impairments. I now live alone with only the aid of personal care assistants, although I don't need any help with toileting, just showering. I do believe Jimmy's story should be read by all parents of children with CP. Because although her son's case might not be typical, whatever that means, it can provide the motivation to "never give up" which is extremely important. For you see, if my parents had listened to the advice of their doctor, I would now be living in an institution. He said I would be better off if they didn't try to raise me at home. I not only graduated from high school with my class, I also went to college and earned an Associates Degree in Business. There is nothing more powerful than a parent's love.

This book is very inspiring. I can identify with many of the same emotions. The only reason I dodn't give it 5 stars is that it is short, without longterm information on her child. I was left wondering "How's he doing now?" I think parents of CP kids always wonder how they are going to be when they "grow up." And this book ends when the child is still very young.

Charming but ultimately a bit deceiving

Marie Kennedy's short biography of her son's toddler years and experience with CP is entertaining and charming but parents of young children with Cerebral Palsy may find themselves depressed by it. I know my husband and I did. Why? Her son, Jimmy, has CP, but just a few short weeks after beginning physical therapy begins walking with the aid of braces, gait trainer, etc. He continues to make similar magnificent gains. In fact, the picture of him on the front of the book using crutches is actually quite deceptive as the time he spent with crutches was I think less than six months. By the end of this very short bio, Jimmy at the age of five is walking, is fully toilet trained, is attending regular school, and has no speech impairments whatever. As the mother of a child whose gains in physical therapy are measured in time spans of years, who may never walk, and who is virtually non-verbal, I applaud Jimmy's and Marie's achievements, but I don't find Jimmy to be a typical toddler or infant with CP. Although there is certainly nothing wrong with many of Marie's "tips" and her book is charming and entertaining, I think many CP moms may find her book a bit depressing. I would avoid this book if your child has more than a mild case of CP.

Overall this book was a good read. My son is 9 months old and was recently diagnosed with CP. I'm the type of person that wants to know all of the information I can, read all the books that I can, explore whatever website I can find - to do what I can to help my son. This book was a good book about the strength a mother found to do what she could for her son. The overview for this book was a little misleading - it said there were "helpful hints" on things to do to help with the CP. I guess this was what I was looking for - a book of different things that helped a mother help her son work through CP... So I gave the product a 3 star because it didn't really get into many helpful hints.

This book will benefit all who read it!

Methinks you'll enjoy MY PERFECT SON by Marie Kenndy.

This is a moving tale of Jimmy and his loving parents . . . as Marie recounts, "After a few nights, I realized that it [wearing night shoes] was bothering me more than him. I had to quit being selfish and thinking of the things he couldn't do and start concentrating on the things he could do."

And what Jimmy could do is just about everything . . . he is now 10, and part of what made this book so special for me was that I could almost watch him grow before my eyes as a result of the many wonderful pictures that were included.

Kenney presents much useful advice for parents of any child . . . for example, she says, "When buying toys or gifts, consider how your child can and should move. It can be disappointing to receive a gift and not be able to use it. Our family consults us on birthdays and Christmas before
making purchases, which helps to avoid this problem."

I strongly recommend this book to any parent or grandparent, as well as to anybody else who works with children . . . you'll not only learn more about cerebral palsy, you'll also learn about life
and how it can be lived to the fullest--regardless of health.

Unlike a dictionary, this book presents a vocabulary associated with a topic. Example topics are animals, plants, woodworking, construction, ships, cars, planes, etc. As a result, if you want to build your vocabulary in order to discuss some topic with someone, you can learn that vocabulary much more quickly than by skipping all over a dictionary.

I recommend it.

For anyone who has no patience for looking up alphbatized words, The Oxford Duden Pictorial is a must. What a wonderful idea to be able to look up a category (the furniture in the living room, the names of sport items.etc) and find them all on one page. These dictionaties aren't being sold in the big chain stores but Amazon lists many. The use of this dictionary is endless.

Good, but not as helpful as I expected.

I have some pen pals in Germany and write to them in German. I also like techical things.

The index materials in this book make it easy to use, whether going from German to English or vice versa. Sometimes the book scores a direct hit. Sometimes the information is too general to be of much use. I have often done as well with careful use of a good German-English/English-German dictionary.

If I cannot find what I want in print, I search the German version of Amazon for the item and see what word(s) are used in describing it. Often there are German-English glossaries available for download to give more detailed technical terms for a subject. I have used this for photographic and for computer terms. More than once I have been surprised to find the Germans have simply borrowed English terms, often without really "germanizing" them, even though there may be an actual legitimate German term for the item.

I purchased this book to assist communication between my young son and a German foreign exchange student staying with us. I found pictures in the book are extremely specific (ever single part in the car, different styles of tanks and ships) and in some cases sexually explicit (a two-page spread depicting a strip-club complete with nude dancers and topless "hostesses"). While the book may be very useful to an adult living in Germany it is not appropriate for children & in my view the description of the book should mention it.

Parents of kids newly diagnosed as having autism are often concerned bout how to interact with their child for maximum effectiveness. Playing, Laughing and Learning with Children on the Autism Spectrum is more than just a book about how to play with such a child: it shows how to break down activities into manageable stages, gain a child's attention, and build on play-oriented achievements for broader impact. Any parent with an autistic child will find this a winning guide, as will educators working with special education kids.

This book was ok. It was the first book I have read specific to non-verbal learning disability, but the information wasn't anything that new. A lot of it I had read before in investigating sensory integration disorder and dyspraxia. A quick read and ok if you haven't already covered a lot of ground on neurological based developmental disorders. If you are a closet expert I wouldn't spend the money or time.

There is embarrassingly little available for parents of children with NLD, and this book is not great but is better than most books. (The only one better is "NLD at school" by Tanguay.) This book at least does cover some of the basic issues that come up for children with NLD, but there is too much focus on how the author solved her own child's issues rather than providing a selection of ideas.

Enlightening!

This book is jam packed with information about NLD. It's a page turner for those of you who need this very important information about your NLD child. Marcia has delved into areas of this difficult disability with a vengence, and has come up with some wonderfully positive solutions. I learned so much about NLD, that I highly recommend it to anyone that needs to learn more about the problems and solutions for a child with this frustrating disability.

I'm delighted to see that this book is still available. My copy is 27 years old and was such a constant in our house while the kids were growing up that it still holds a place of honor on the bookshelf. Okay - the fact that their heights and weights are charted in the back on the growth graphs might be part of the reason... It prevented countless unnecessary phone calls and trips to the pediatrician, but it's more than just a "baby book". Even when the kids were teenagers, I was still consulting it to determine whether a medical problem required immediate attention or could wait until Monday morning. And the book was always right! The kids are in their twenties now, and when it's time, I'll buy them the updated version of this classic for their own families. At this price, it's a wonderful investment in peace of mind and a good night's sleep.

I received this book as a freebie, part of a very smart corporation's plan to get their employees to take better care of themselves and their children, presumably, of course, to thereby lessen the overall insurance burden.

Never-the-less, with the probable exception of the dictionary, it's been the most referenced book on my shelves over the last 15 years since my first child was born. I treasure its simple wisdom and sensible approach and it has helped me both to ignore certain complaints and to act quickly upon others during that time.

As for the rather embittered review which claims it's full of dangerously misleading information, I'd have to disagree (although it's important to note those comments were made in reference to feeding issues, an area -- unlike meningitis, for instance, or a fall which resulted in a jagged bone protruding -- in which there's still a fair bit of debate).

No, it shouldn't be used as a sole source of information, nor should it completely replace your own good judgement AND instinct. However, for any number of every day ailments and injuries that any parent will encounter with their children, its generally sound guidance will be most welcome in helping you arrive at a conclusion whether to phone the doctor or not.

Being a parent is often enough like playing pin the tail on the donkey in the dark -- this book, however, WILL shine a bit of light where you might need it most.

My son was diagnosed hyperactive in 1976..aged 6. In those days
Rytalin was the poison of choice...now it is Prozac. I didn't see how making a zombie of him would let him learn, cope, or deal with life.
I found this book and did the whole diet for entire family...and it worked. I believe the cause is in utero..mom has a vitamin B deficiency
and it affects the baby's brain development, so the baby has to have lots
of B vitamins and NO JUNK..for life...and if that is all it takes for your child to have a good life, WHAT IS THE PROBLEM? My whole family felt benefits and he went on to be a Ranger and member of the Old Guard. This
works...and NO SIDE EFFECTS..other than a good life!

The Feingold diet saved my child's life

Dr Feingold's theory is that bad behaviour and/or learning disabilities in otherwise bright children is caused by artifical colors and flavors. Although it may seem too simplistic, it is the answer IF you, as a parent, are willing to alter your lifestyle by reading ingredient labels and preparing food that is normal, natural and healthy. A child cannot do this on their own! But you will save your child's future and maybe your own sanity. A must buy!

We made the changes that were suggested, but found no effect on our child's behavior (which is only mildly hyperactive).

It appears some people have success with this, and that's great. Note however: it is VERY difficult to follow this diet in a family where only one child might need it.

Personally, I believe that following your kid around and critiquing every morsel of food that goes into his mouth, drives everyone crazy.

It may have been written 25 years ago but my son was a totally different child within a week of following the Feingold Diet! It's been weeks now and even he is willing to follow the diet because he says he likes the way he feels. I am so glad I will not have to put my 5 year old child on drugs that will alter his personality. This is a must read for anyone looking for a way to fix the problem and the long term affects of hyperactivity. Doping your child may be the easy way out but doesn't address the cause. This may not help all cases but it's worth a try.

Miriam Stoppard has written an outstanding work of reference of common & not so common childhood illnesses & injury. The outstanding feature of this work teaches the parent when it's OKay NOT to take baby to the doctor. It teaches the parent what problems can effectively be dealt with at home, and how to deal with each problem. It also includes threshold signs & symptoms that identify when it really is time to get the little one to professional, competent medical care. The book also advises the parent when it's time to activate EMS for the most urgent medical emergencies. As an Emergency Paramedic I give copies of this book away to friends, family and patients like candy. This is an outstanding work that no home with children under ten years of age should be without.

This was the first book I bought when my grandson was diagnosed with spastic diplegia. I found no hope in it and continued looking until I found Advanced Bio-mechanical Rehabilition. Their web-site is www.blyum.com. We have been doing ABR for six months and the changes are miraculous. Finally something to actually help our kids physically instead of teaching them to deal with less and less movement as they age.

Children with Cerebral Palsy - A Parent's Guide saved my life. My beautiful 2 yr. old daughter had just been diagnosed with CP and I felt as if she had been given a death sentence. After reading this guide for my child I was able to mourn the loss of a "normal" child and get real with the fact that she had Cerebral Palsy and that this disability would not go away. I gave a copy of the book to my mother so she could better understand CP and not to be afraid of it. Emily is now 10 yrs. old and in 4th grade (regular schooling). She is getting A's and is walking with the use of a walker. Emily has been a real "teacher" for kids not familiar with CP. THANK YOU Elaine Geralis from the bottom of my heart for all of the research and unbelievable information you put in your book.I no longer see CP as a "death sentence", but an opportunity to educate others about Cerebral Palsy. I have recommended your book to several "newly diagnosed" families and you have helped them too. I recommend this first and foremost to anyone that knows someone with CP or is a caregiver of someone who has Cerebral Palsy.

Our most precious commodity in this world are our children and making sure they are eating properly is a challenging task to say the least. With fast food and junk food being dangled in front of them on television commercials and on the Internet using cartoon characters and clever marketing to appeal to them, it's literally a war out there--a "food fight" between parents and their kids about what to eat.

That's why pediatric physician Dr. David Ludwig wrote Ending the Food Fight because he wanted to show parents that it IS possible to feed your children healthy foods without having them pitch a fit. The 9-week OWL program that Dr. Ludwig uses with children all the time at the Children's Hospital Boston has a proven track record of helping even the most defiant, sugar-addicted kids to eat better. It's all found in this book!

You'll recall that Dr. Ludwig has published some research on "fatty liver" being a problem with eating too many carbohydrates, so he is certainly a proponent of livin' la vida low-carb based on what the science has shown him. And applying those principles to children makes sense to him which is the heartbeat of everything he does. If you are a parent, then you should own a copy of Ending the Food Fight.

Dr. Ludwig is saying things that too few others dare. It's hard to give up the fast, instant food that is everywhere but if we don't, it's the children who will suffer the most.

This book isn't just another diet book based on somebody's single theory. It is a compilation of much testing and research in regards to overcoming weight issues. The information is well presented and easily understood. It has helped our family make and keep to better eating and exercise habits and has helped us all trim a few pounds. Highly recommended.

This is a good, helpful book, though a bit of a chore to slog through. There are too many sidebars, which I found disruptive, and the book seems to be written as though the author is talking to a young child, that is, simplistic, if not, sophmoric. However, what the author has to say and some of his advice and insights are very much worthwhile. I do think it may have been more effective without the "case studies;" a more straightforward account of children's relationships with foods in the early part of this century.
