Historic action film of WWIReview Date: 2007-11-07
Philip W. Stewart has researched, compiled and edited this listing or catalog of historic films of action taken during World War I. The U.S. Army Signal Corps were given the assignment of obtaining photographic coverage of American participation in the War. In the introduction, Stewart reiterates the earlier statement of purpose for the filming made by K. Jack Bauer in 1957. The photographic coverage was ordered for propaganda, scientific, identification, and military reconnaissance purposes, but primarily for the production of a pictorial history of the war.
The book is divided into two sections. Part One covers U.S. military operations from the years prior to the war beginning in 19l4 and through to the returning of the troops in 1918-1919. Included in this section are films related to post-Armistice training, films relating to Allied and enemy activities, and the parades and events celebrating liberty. There are films from Washington D.C., Paris, London, and Brussels featured in these festivities filmed in 1918 and 1919.
As a U S. Navy veteran I took special note of the films related to Naval Operations. There are films featuring submarines, U-boats, destroyers, battleships, our convoy activities, and the return of the fleet in 1918.
Part two is made up of a listing of films featuring civilian activities. Several films cover the years of Woodrow Wilson's administration, his cabinet, the decisions he faced and the treaties he signed. A number of films were made of his trip to Europe in 1918 on the ocean-liner George Washington. He visited France, England and Italy. Additional trips to Europe were made in the following year. Many of the events and receptions attended during these visits were captured on film and are included in the listings.
Films featuring industry as it related to the war effort are also included in this section. The manufacturing of ordnance material, military aeroplanes, gas masks, and shipbuilding are all included.
Other patriotic activities, holiday celebrations and liberty loan drives are featured. I found the films covering the memorial services at Arlington National Cemetery, and the Burial of an Unknown Solider of particular interest.
This book is one of a kind. It is destined to become an important resource for historians, media researchers, documentary producers, and students of films. There are 957 reels of footage shot during the years 1914-1918. These include the WWI era documentary films, in record group 111, held in the U.S. National Archives. Philip W. Stewart has produced an important work in his book "Battlefilm."

Interestingly writtenReview Date: 2008-03-06
Mr. Stewart, the author of "War Wings" is a retired USAF Lt. Colonel, aviation film consultant, and TV producer. Colonel Stewart spent the better part of twenty years researching and reviewing thousands of reels of rare WW I footage and cataloging them in this very complete volume.
In this, his latest reference book, "War Wings," he identifies and describes the 71 titles with aviation content. His book documents and describes each scene in detail for over 2,550 action-packed scenes, taken from those 71 titles that he has found in the archives. Scenes of pilots in training, airplanes being manufactured, Dog Fighting in the skies over France, and the post-Armistice testing of the enemy's new airplanes. This and much more was all captured on black and white film back in the years of 1917-1919.
Colonel Stewart has set his book up with very well-written appendices, index and even added a few official letters from that era. "War Wings" is an exceptional reference of all the aviation footage in the National Archives. It is interestingly written, well made and the cover art is very fitting. I think Colonel Stewart did a good job in chronicling all the file films and scenes. I gave the book an A rating and I suggest it to anyone who will be researching the aviation aspects of WW I.
Next Best Thing! Review Date: 2008-02-19
Phil's arrangement of the films in this book; the way he codes the index listing and gives a sentence or phrase for each scene in a film, allows the reader to almost watch the films themselves unroll in front of them. Much research was needed to properly identify the aircraft, men, and situations shown in each scene and Phil did an outstanding job.
The reader (almost, "the viewer") comes away with a new appreciation for the men and machines of the period. Phil deserves our gratitude for collecting this material and making it available. It is fascinating information. It's the next best thing to seeing the films themselves.

One of Kind Research Book on WWI Air War FilmsReview Date: 2008-04-21
As an author and documentary film maker myself, I could see this book being used as a tool for anyone putting together a TV show, or movie, on the air combat in WWI. This book has put together a user friendly guidebook to aviation documentary motion pictures from the first war that classifies what is in the U.S. National Archives. This is not small achievement!
The book is really specialized by virtue of the information it presents and may not be of much interests to the average reader of war or aviation books; however, for those with a deeper need for finding actual film footage from that war, this is a must have book. There is something in the last part of this book that might interest most readers - an reprinted article by Brigadier General "Billy" Mitchell that is worth reading.
I give this book FIVE STARS because if its great value for historic preservation - but this book will have a small readership interest due to its very nature. This is not a casual book to sit down and read at the beach or the airport - this is for real aviation buffs, historians, film makers and perhaps, some college libraries. I found it enjoyable but it is has a specific target readership and is not recommend it for the general reading public at large.

A must-read for all women.Review Date: 1998-04-17
Taking issue with the tendency of physicians to over-use estrogen as the answer to women's problems, Kamen demonstrates, with clear scientific evidence, that natural progesterone is actually the hormone we should be using.
Betty Kamen's book is easy-to-read and highly informative on every aspect of the subject of female functioning and hormones. Her conversational style and the many illustrations made this scientific book read like a novel! Highly recommended - whether you're having menstrual problems or are menopausal. progesterone is actually the hormone that needs supplementation.
I highly recommend this book to all of my customers.Review Date: 1998-09-07

Easy-to-read and understandReview Date: 2008-10-26
The book shares a clear and brutally honest portrayal of what's really happening (and why it's happening) when a woman is under the influence of the tyrant PMS. The story installment at the beginning of each chapter makes it easy for readers to relate to the topic currently being discussed. Aside from practical strategies (which are also helpful not just during PMS reign), it also provides hope & encouragement from other women (who've been through the PMS misery) and helpful advice from experts in the field. There were also useful tools and information like nutrition do's and dont's, sleep deprivation, herbal supplements, etc. stated that you can use to maintain your health and your family's well-being.
I think one of the things that sets this book apart from the others is the chapter about "PMS and Faith". I don't think there's a PMS-related book in the market today that tackles faith-related issues while being logical.
On a last note, while PMS may not be ultimately "curable", it is manageable. Geoffrey Redmond, M.D., emphasizes that the problem is not the hormones themselves but how a woman's body reacts to them. So, it's really up to the woman to manage her symptoms if she wants a pain-free pre-menstrual period.
REMARKS:
I wish the author had inserted a little bit of humor in the book. It's a serious subject and women who have low attention span (or men who may be interested in reading the book) may not be able to endure the 186 pages. But overall, the book is not only reader-friendly and insightful but also uplifting and helpful. It is still highly recommended!

9 NUGGETS OF WISDOM FROM "SOS for PMS":
** Silence is the enemy of healing.
** When you say yes to life, you automatically say no to something else. That's why it's important to know the price of your yes.
** It's one thing to understand why questionable behavior is occuring. It's another to do something about it.
** There's a direct connection between what you eat & drink and how you feel.
** Eating about 3-4 hours in small amounts can regulate blood sugar more rapidly than eating in traditional "3 squares" and can help avoid a rapid drop in sugar level thus preventing meltdowns that might occur if too much time elapsed between snacks and meals.
** Experts recommend 4 ounces of water every hour you are awake. If you wait to drink until you're thirsty, your body's fluids are already depleted.
** Serotonin is a neurotransmitter in the brain that has an enormous influence over many brain functions. The functions of serotonin are numerous and appear to involve control of appetite, sleep, mood, behavior (including sexual behavior) and depression. When serotonin is at an ideal level, you feel mellow and relaxed, hopeful and optimistic. You have a sense of being at peace with life. Low serotonin levels can result in feeling depressed, having a short attention span, feeling "blocked" or scattered, acting impulsively, feeling suicidal, and craving sweets and simple carbohydrates to quickly increase the serotonin level.
** Sleep, sunlight, sex and exercise increase serotonin while caffeine, alcohol and stress lower serotonin.
** Thirty minutes of aerobic exercise is approximately equivalent to 20 mg of Prozac. That's how powerful exercise is!

"Taking control of PMS..."
I remember well those days when I felt irritable, bloated, headachy, and out of sorts. I did not know why I felt that way until I started a journal. That was when I saw the monthly cycle.
Author Mary Byers brings knowledge and wisdom to this topic. She has thoroughly researched PMS. In The S.O.S. for PMS, the topic is discussed from the perspective of motherhood. It is difficult to deal with the stress of a spouse, children, and PMS, all at once.
Byers includes a list of both physical and behavioral symptoms. I was particularly impressed with the suggestions for coping or lessening PMS. Byers includes making good choices such as nutrition, avoiding caffeine, and exercise. She always discusses medication and faith. The S.O.S. for PMS is easy to read and understand. Where was this book 30 years ago when I needed it!? I recommend this book for all women. It will bless them and their families.

A Must Have Book!Review Date: 2007-12-11
Are you doing a documentary about World War 1? Do you need World War I stock footage for your movie?
This reference book gives concise information about the surviving motion pictures that were taken during WWI, over 90 years ago. BATTLEFILM details 467 film titles that cover America's part in this conflict. Each of the 957 reels of action is described using data gathered from actual U.S. Army records.
This book is the ONLY one in publication today that details readily available WWI films. BATTLEFILM is a superb source of information for stock-footage for that Great War documentary.
July 07 Newsletter by Tony Lazzarini, President Military Writer's Society of America says: "BATTLEFILM, written by retired U.S. Air Force officer, Phillip W. Stewart is a catalog of the WWI era documentary films in Record Group 11 held at the U.S. National Archives. Being involved with documentary films myself, I appreciate good reference material. it's a 'must have' book if you happen to be looking for original film footage regarding WWI. This is a very well organized and detailed catalog."
