I have tried to stop smoking many times. I have smoked a pack of cigarettes a day for over 25 years. Each time I have stoped, I continued to crave cigarettes. Alan Carr's method for stoping smoking worked for me, I do not smoke now. I stopped in November of 2007. I dont crave it, I can hardly belive I ever smoked at all. This Method works so well, I have recommended it to many of my friends. Several have purchased the program and have also stopped. This was the best money I ever spent.

I thought this book was very informative, and yet unusual. He reverses your brain by opening our minds to the the brain-washing we were programmed from many years ago.I thought this book is quite incredible. I would recommed this book and Allan Carrs book on How to Quit Drinking as well to anyone who is considering quitting. It's a MUST HAVE!He is an inspiration and genius!

I don't usually write reviews but all the positive reviews about this book helped me make the decision to purchase it and gave me hope. So I hope this helps you.
I ordered this book out of curiosity and was very skeptic about the outcome. It took me over a month to finish it and I doubted myself the whole time. Yet after I finished reading, I put out the last cigarette and felt immediate relief. The first couple of days were a little strange, because I used to plan my whole day around smoking, but it turned out OK.I have more energy, feel better and even endure the company of smokers easily, without being tempted. This book is about putting your thinking in a different perspective, adopting a non-smoker's frame of mind.
Try it even if you're skeptic about it. You have nothing to loose and so much to gain!
I am getting it as a Christmas gift for all my smoking friends.

Nearly two years ago I read this book...

...and I am still free from cigarette smoking.

The writing style took a little getting used to, but I allowed myself to believe what it is saying, and I found that I was freed from my previously-held beliefs about smoking. "Cured" sounds far-fetched, but that's how I feel now. I smoked for 16 years, and of the many times I attempted to quit, this was the only successful method.

Try it, even if you don't feel ready to. After all, you can keep smoking while you read the book (indeed, the book instructs you to do so).

5 stars for the book, 2 for the audio package

As a 15-year smoker, I have tried to quit many times, and have had partial success twice with the nicotine patch, quitting for 8-12 months before succumbing to nicotine again and starting back. I was very skeptical that anything short of a medically-prescribed shot or drugs could cure me of my addiction, much less a book. I tried Mr. Carr's book anyway based on the positive reviews here.

What I first considered a negative, was that Mr. Carr is not a doctor and has no professional training. I subconsciously assumed he was if he was writing a book about quitting smoking. He is just a man who used to be a chronic smoker who was able to quit. Several months after writing this review, I realized that this was a positive, since it seems that much of the medical community advocates Nicotine Replacement Therapy, and doesn't understand the true addictive properties of nicotine. This sounds like a ridiculous assertion to say that a doctor doesn't understand addiction, and I thought Mr. Carr was being pompous when he first made the same claim in his book, but given how many physicians smoke, and how many advocate replacing nicotine with nicotine, it is not so far-fetched. The second negative I initially gave this book was the minor annoyances at reading the book due to some of phrasing in it and how many times Carr repeats the same phrases and ideas. After reading it twice however, I realized that this is done on purpose to drill certain concepts into your head.

Carr's method is really just a mind set and a new way of thinking about smoking that makes it easy to quit. He doesn't focus on describing the dangers of smoking to you or try to scare you into quitting. The entire method revolves mainly around coming to the realization that you don't really like smoking, and that the only reason you do it is because you are a) addicted to nicotine b) brainwashed by social stigma. I have only been a non-smoker for a month but I am completely confident that I will never smoke a cigarette again. I am not worried about cravings, peer pressure, or the influence of drinking and being at a bar (my main problem in the past). Carr's method is different than what he calls the "willpower method," where you quit cold-turkey and see how long you can go. His book has completely changed my viewpoint on cigarettes and after 15 years, I finally realize how powerful nicotine is and how dependent I was on it. What's more, you don't even have to quit smoking while reading it. Carr actually recommends against this, and the book is so effective that by the time you finish it, you will want to quit smoking rather than be forced to.

After reading this book twice, the strongest advice I can give anyone is to FOLLOW ALL INSTRUCTIONS. If you haven't already (I had), do not quit smoking until you reach the end of the book. I can't stress this enough.

I strongly suggest anyone who is serious about quitting smoking to read this book, and then read it a second time to full understand it. It costs less than a carton of cigarettes, is a quick read, and likely will save your life.

As to the Audio CD Edition:

I previously read an earlier edition of "Easy Way" from the library, and have found that this 2005 edition is somewhat improved over the previous edition. I definitely recommend anyone considering this book to purchase the 2005 edition over an older one. I purchased this Audio CD edition because I wanted every single resource I could use to help me quit. It comes with two CDs, with about 70 minutes worth of material that they could have fit on one. The CDs are pretty worthless. 80% of them repeat the concepts in the book. That's it. Track 2 on the second CD does contain some new information that I found somewhat useful. It explains mainly how to deal with other smokers after you have quit, and how to deal with drinking after you have quit. Unless you are very addicted and think you really need it, I don't recommend the audio cd edition and would advise people to purchase The Easy Way to Stop Smoking: Join the Millions Who Have Become Non-Smokers Using Allen Carr's Easyway Method instead, as it has everything you need.

AFTER NEARLY 42 YEARS OF CONTINUOUS SMOKING I READ HOOKED BUT NOT HELPLESS. I PUT THE BOOK DOWN AND NEVER PICKED UP A CIGARETTE AGAIN THAT WAS 6 YEARS AGO THIS PAST JANUARY, 05.
I HAD TRIED TO QUIT MANY TIMES TO NO AVAIL. SOMEHOW AFTER READING THE BOOK IT GAVE ME A TOTALLY DIFFERENT MIND SET ON SMOKING. I DIDN'T FOLLOW THE BOOK TOTALLY. THE BOOK RECOMMENDED YOU TO PICK A QUIT DATE. BUT AS I MENTIONED AFTER READING IT I WAS CONVINCED AND NEVER PICKED UP AGAIN.

It's a shame this isn't in print, but at least buy it used

It works. That's the #1 thing you need to know. The author's program was recommended to me by two ex-smokers I trust, and I purchased it online at Allison's site, stopsmoking dot com. If you're not willing to do that, you owe it to yourself to at least try a used copy of her book. Why? Because I don't smoke anymore, after 27 years of addiction.

it worked for me!

after smoking a pack a day (two packs a day on weekends) for 17 years and quitting and relapsing innumerable times, i finally succeeded using this method. i have been an ex-smoker now for 4 1/2 years!!! the arguments here give you the rationale to combat addict thinking and overcome the mental tricks your addiction uses to get you to start smoking again. i bought this book after my father and step-mother used it to quit about 7 yrs ago (they are both still ex-smokers). i had it on my shelf for a year and one day i decided to quit smoking and i grabbed the book and read it instead of buying another pack of cigarettes. i haven't had one puff since. i recommend buying it and let it sit on your shelf til you are ready.

I smoked for over 40 years. I tried 10 times over a five year period to quit smoking. I checked this book out of the public library in February of 1996. After reading it, I told my husband on Valentines Day of 1996 that I was giving him the gift of quitting smoking. That's been over 6 years now. This book is priceless. I've told numerous people to get the book. It saved me.

I had little to no willpower when it comes to cigarette smoking but luckily, I didn't need any to quit with this program. I just had to practice not smoking, but I never felt deprived because I only had 4 practice sessions a day which only lasted a couple of minutes to a half hour max. So the exercises helped alot, especially the ones which taught me how to deal with my stress without cigarettes.

If you want to quit smoking, buy this book.

Fantastic Read! I found this to be a completely heartfelt realistic view of the life of a smoker trying to quit. The tongue-in-cheek humor actually comes across as a coping mechanism instead of snarky storytelling. It is easy to find yourself truly caring about this person and wanting them to succeed!

Wow! As a Respiratory Therapist, I work with people everday who are suffering the debilitating pulmonary effects of years of smoking. Most of my patients want to quit and just can't. From a scientific point of view I can understand how difficult it is to quit but I never thought about the emotional hold smoking has on people until I read "A Life in Smoke".
I was hoping that Julia's book would help me obtain some insight of how my patients feel about their smoking and their many failed attempts to quit. It did just that. I never realized the intimate friendship that people have with their cigarettes and what a important part of their survival those cigarettes are. I believe the book helped me to become more understanding, more empathetic and less judgemental. I'm going to recommend it to all of my co-workers.

For the first time, I have a glimpse into what it's like to be a smoker and why they do it. I've never understood the call of cigarettes--the few times I've tried one, I haven't felt a 'rush' or anything compelling me to have another, just a smokey icky taste in the mouth. Julia Hansen's tales of smoking and how she used the habit as a way to keep people and emotions at bay touched me deeply. There's a twist at the end that's both not surprising and disappointing, but you'll have to read it. An author who has found her voice, I hope she writes more.

As an avid never smoked non-smoker, my eyes were opened to the complexities of trying to break this one little habit. I have much more respect for my friends and family members that have accomplished this feat through the years. Hats off to Julia for not letting past defeats lessen her determination. This book is a thumbnail view into the highs and lows of her very interesting life. It is a great read for anyone interested in how other people handle everyday life.

This book changed my life! I stopped smoking years ago using the principles and information in the third edition of this book and I was very happy to see that there is a new, fourth edition. In fact, this book has more information and support than any other book out there on the subject. The author, David C. Jones, holds your hand through each of the stages of quitting smoking and gives you the knowledge and skills to succeed. It was a great relief to finally read about smoking as a physical addiction - a medical condition - and not just a bad habit that can be overcome by willpower. I always felt like I was a bad person because I couldn't stop smoking. But this book made me look at myself, and at smoking, differently. The true-life success stories and the daily meditations included in this book also inspired me a great deal. This is the best book out there for stopping smoking. Do yourself a favor: buy this book!

This has to be the best book out there for stopping smoking and staying stopped. David Jones addresses smoking as an addiction and treats the person, not the cigarette. He addresses the proper way to withdraw along with healthy coping skills to become and stay a non-smoker. I am thankful for this book.

I honestly had no plans to quit smoking when I found this book, I was looking for yoga books at the library... I thought the title was interesting and checked this out instead. I read the book and took action where it gave exercies and instructions, and by the time I got to the last page I stopped smoking! I also used an Anthony Robbins NLP technique with this book to aid in making smoking seem horribly disgusting (which it is.) I quit eleven months ago and have had ZERO cravings. One caveat, you will only get out of this book what you put into it!!

Review Date: 2004-12-05
After reading the Tao of Quitting Smoking, I highly recommend this book, not only to those addicted to nicotine, but to anyone with an addiction. The most important thing about quitting an addiction/habit is preparing yourself not only physically but also mentally and spiritually. This book is excellent because it touches upon each facet necessary to end an addiction. There are assignments which one can do while smoking as well as a step-by-step process to achieving a smoke-free life.

This book is written in a simple, easy-to-read style not only for adults, but also for young teens. I, especially love that the Author has had first-hand experiences struggling with wanting to quit and in his book, we travel with him on his journey to becoming a nonsmoker.

The book inspires one to achieve their highest potential in believing in yourself that you can do anything that you set your mind to do. He reminds me of Dr. Phil with his no nonsense approach.

A note from the Author.

Hi, I was a 2-3 pack a day smoker when I quit cold turkey. I developed this book from my experiences and difficulties with quitting smoking. My book will help you unlike any other, being that my book heals your soul. Give it a try, but remember, the Tao pronounced (Dao) of Quitting Smoking must be followed as written. It is a book that deals with your mind, body and spirit at different levels. This book is not a book that you can skim through pages or skip sections. The T.O. Q. S works on ending you association, craving, habit and addition to tobacco products. The book will help you understand why you began smoking, why you can't stop and the role Nicotine has on your brain. It is designed to facilitate a loathing towards tobacco. It is difficult to quit smoking if you still have positive associations with the product. Nicotine is a drug. It is not your fault that you are addicted to tobacco products. Please visit my site at toqs.com to learn more.

This book is great for all ages: buy it for yourself, a friend or a love one. Smoking is a slow suicide. It is also dangerous as second-hand smoke. End your addiction with the Tao of Quitting Smoking. Buy my book, read the information from my website, go to the links, join a quit smoking support group and stop paying the tobacco companies your hard earn money to cause you harm.

Good luck on your path to quitting smoking forever. You CAN do it this time. The T.O.Q.S also helps your body deal with the cravings as well as help you with not gaining weight when quitting smoking

Thanks

Thanks to the Tao of Quitting Smoking by Joseph Weaver, my ten year, 1 pack a day addiction is over. I am not a spiritual person, so I was skeptical of buying a book which labels itself as the spiritual approach to quitting smoking. However, after reading this book, I realized the book is about much more. The secret of this book is to help the reader rid their misconceptions associated with Nicotine, Addiction, Tobacco and Second-hand Smoke. The book goes deeply into the root of a person's soul to discover WHY they allow themselves to smoke. The Tao of quitting smoking is a reader's own self analysis of actions, thoughts, habits and transformation.

What I loved about the book was the chapters, lessons and assignments were extremely short and I was able to smoke while reading the book. There are assignments that the reader must do as a smoker.

The book helps the reader get a grip back on being a conscious being with chapters such as...

Lessons of Simplicity
Non-Judgment
Fear and Courage
Free Will
Our existence on Earth

The book talks about nicotine and smoking in a scientific fashion with the chapters such as...
What is Nicotine
Addiction
Biological Replacement/Emotional Replacement and Constituents of Tobacco
Products and their Smoke
Why we smoke
Research and Statistics

The book also deals with replacing the chemical affects of Nicotine in the brains, such as using Nicotine as a mood enhancer or antidepressant. The bioactive nature of Nicotine cause many pleasure chemicals within the brain to keep the smoker addicted to Nicotine. The book teaches simple meditative-calming techniques to help the nonsmoker balance the effects of lack of Nicotine in the body. The book also teaches the reader to hate everything associated with smoking. It is this passion that helps the nonsmoker never to smoke again.

The book has a short and simple approach to helping one not gain weight when quitting which involves avoiding certain food groups, as well as exercising. I give this book an "A" on inspiring me enough to quit smoking as well as take back the control over my life in all areas. It is a complete self-help book about finding yourself again.

Great Book!

I read this book after trying to quit smoking several times. I have tried hypnosis, other quit smoking books, the patch, the pill and even seminars. I have finished reading the book one week ago. I can truly say that I will never smoke again. Why? Especially because it has been only a week. Well, I just know I will NEVER go back to smoking. The book helped me go inward and build the strenght I needed, so I can say. Smoking is a dead subject for me.

After reading this book, I woke up. The book have me the self control to say NO. The book has a lot of assignment and it takes about 10 days to read this book. You can't read the book in a couple of days. The worse part was when the book instructed the reader to switch brands of cigarettes. The book really helped me go inward and realize that I have the power. It also helped me to HATE tobacco. I highly recommend this book for any smoker, who is still smoking and thinking about quitting.

This process empowered me to take back control of my body and my life. I followed the instructions, step by step, and freed myself forever. No willpower required. Just a commitment to work the process. Thanks Paul!

After trying everything else, from mini computers to pills and patches and books, Paul Lagergren's Tiger process helped me beat a powerful nicotine addiction. The secret is, I think, the way this program cuts all the important steps into tiny and manageable actions so that all a person has to do is concentrate on that day's step, one day at a time, one step at a time and then you are there and you are successful and you are saying "Jeez, that wasn't so hard!" You learn how to quit smoking while you're still smoking and then you set a date and when it comes you are prepared and you have all the tools you will need.

I think that this book tells kids all about smoking in a way that is not insulting to them. It has stories of kids who smoked or wanted to smoke or had their lives changed by people who smoked. The facts are all there but the person who wrote the book treats kids as if they can think for themselves and make their own decisions based on the facts. I would recommend this book to schools and libraries so more kids could read it. It is very helpful.

Buy this book - it's the only one that has really worked. I even went to Alan Carr sessions, read the books - have tried on and off for 30 years. This book and the wonderful information in it has done it for me. FREEDOM!! There are no scare tactics, just good, logical information. It took me 6 hours to read, but around 3/4 of the way to the end, I just stopped smoking .. just wanted to, eventhough I wasn't told to.

If you want to see that it is actually EASY to give up, buy this book today - you won't regret it. It was so easy, that I was able to stop smoking, even with others around me who continue to smoke.

This book has a lot more reviews on www.amazon.co.uk because it's a British author.
