Handbook of Peripheral Neuropathy (A Blessing of Information)

I've been searching forever for a comprehensive book that didn't cost more than $30, but goes into detail, but is readable by a layperson. I hate those books that are pre-school level or 6 year medical school. This is it, but look for an inexpensive used book...I found this one for $18 on Amazon! This excellent book covers: Laboratory Evaluation of Peripheral Neuropathy (electrodiagnostic, quantitative sensory, autonomic nervous system, nerve history, pathology, skin biopsy, MR imaging); Imflammatory Demyelinating Neuropathies (acute, chronic, multifocal); Neuropathies Associated with Disease; Hereditary Neuropathies; Focal Peripheral Neuropathies; and finally Treatments. It's full of diagrams, charts, pictures, and references. A must have reference book for those of us suffering from Peripheral Neuropathy. Your best defense is understanding the symptoms and the cause and asking questions of your doctors!!

Very Good Medical Reference Collection

Review Date: 2008-11-03
Ok you could say that I could do without some of this information because it is very detailed and would be better off in a library setting. The fact is I may not hold everything I learn so the more I read; the more information I will absorb. Magill's Medical Guide is appropriate for the general reader, and is very educational. As stated by the editor, it has 960 alphabetically arranged articles ranging in length from 500 words (a half page) to 3,500 words. The majority of articles relate to diseases and disorders and include information on causes, symptoms, and treatment. This is a set of 4 big books which are very interesting to read. I suggest this set for the curious reader to any person working in the medical field. I bought mine on Amazon very reasonable and they cost a lot to be mailed to me because of their weight, so I basically got them for free when you think of it. The best medical reference on diseases, disorders, symptoms and treatment. I know you could get smaller books out there on the same contents as this book but they are most likely not as detailed as this book. THIS SET IS GOOD TO HAVE IN YOUR LIBRARY COLLECTION.

The Best Information for Anyone in Chronic Pain

Review Date: 2008-05-24
I highly recommend Pain Banishment, Not Pain Management to anyone suffering from chronic pain. The book is easy to read, explains how Dr. Rhodes developed his treatment system, and contains patient stories that cover the pain spectrum from RSD to migraines to fibromyalgia, and beyond. Although my story is not in the book, I know his treatments work, because I was his patient in 2003. After an injury, I experienced such disabling pain that I could no longer work. Months of conventional therapy, including multiple pain medications, did nothing to ease my pain. When doctors wanted to use epidurals, I refused. I knew about Dr. Rhodes and decided to give him a try before I had anything invasive. During his treatments, it took me about six weeks to get off my meds. After that, my pain gradually diminished for a couple of weeks and then suddenly let up. I like this book because you really get to know Dr. Rhodes in Part One, since it is written just the way he talks. It also explains his treatment methodology without cluttering up the book with details that change as he constantly upgrades his approach. It helps you understand what to expect when you arrive at his clinic. The patient stories show you the range and severity of pain syndromes that can be treated and give you hope that help exists for you. And the technical information at the back of the book offers the rationale for the cause of chronic pain. I would urge anyone in chronic pain to try this non-invasive treatment system before letting anyone cut, heavily medicate, sever nerves, implant nerve stimulators or morphine pumps, amputate, or otherwise mutilate your body in the quest to ease pain that only becomes worse from such maltreatments. If you want relief from chronic pain, I urge you to try this method first, not last.

This two volume text is an essential reference and mandatory reading for any Neurology resident or Staff Physician. I had the opportunity to train under the instruction of many of the contributors to this text. I found it to be rich in detail and clinical expertise. I refer to it often in my practice. It is concise and easily understood.

I bought this book for someone else who is suffering from diabetic neuropathy that is not responding well to treatment. This person said that the book is "excellent" and that it provided clear, comprehensive information that s/he wasn't able to find anywhere else (including internet sites). Highly recommended!

Peripheral Neuropathy is a concise, inexpensive volume written in plain English. It will be useful to both neuropathy sufferers and their physicians alike.

Dr. Latov's expertise -- as a clinician, teacher, and a founder of The Neuropathy Association(www,neuropathy.org) -- is well-reflected in the text.

When both the doctor and the patient are able to discuss neuropathy knowledgeably as a result of reading this work, the disease will be better understood and managed

This book, gave me the knowlege to go to my Dr and tell him I was not going to take anymore perscriptions as no matter what i had been taking, including, neurontin, messed my brain up even though it might have helped with the pain. I noticed how so many said vitamin B was such a help and I am now using vitamins to combat my problem. Thank you for putting the book together and giving us hope that we are not alone in this fight within our own bodies. The Dr's comment with a smile was"Congratulations, you've graduated! You don't need to come back for six months"

This is an excellent book. The author, who has neuropathy, puts together a good listing of clinical trials involving vitamins and minerals, mostly in Europe and Asia. He successfully tries to be objective - he is not a medical person, and does not pretend to be one. Listing of clinical trial results does not take a medically trained person and so this doesn't bother me. Towards the end he does list a couple of vitamin and mineral programs that he put together as recommendations. Again, these are based on the clinical trial results.

It is more of a journey of the authors illness. He symptoms seemed extreme so it was hard to relate to myself. It seemed to be more relevant to diabetes rather than hypoglycemia.

In the search to find answers to health issues most americans accept the diagonosis and treatments prescribed by their doctors. It was refreshing to read the author's journey and findings as he challenged his doctors and accepted practices. This is a must read for anyone dealing with daily pain and/or blood sugar and insulin issues as well as doctors and researchers. My hope is this books leads to more research to help those suffering every day.

TYPE 4 DIABETES is a great book. I won't bother telling what interesting reading it is; my concern is what follows this book. Bob Ranson and his doctors stopped short of the next step: that is, where does blood glucose act?
Glucose is the energy source of the cell. Though glucose is routinely measured in the blood, it is what is in the cell that matters most. When insulin resistance causes blood sugar to rise, the cell is deprived. We might call that HYPOGLYCELLIA.
Questions arise: When blood insulin rises, is that an indication that cells are being deprived of glucose? Might insulin level be a vital test? (Cardiologist Al Sears thinks so.) Can glucose-starved cells cause neurological, kidney and eye damage years before blood glucose rises and diabetes is a concern? Might a little sugar at the right time provide cells with what they need, bringing relief from pain and fatigue in various conditions? I don't find these questions answered in the literature, but this book makes them a vital concern.
Thank you, Bob Ranson, for raising questions that may change the face of medical science.

New Book Links Nerve Disease, Alzheimer's and Fibromyalgia
Helpful Votes: 9 out of 9 total.
Review Date: 2007-01-30
Type 4 Diabetes: Elevated Insulin. Lower Blood Sugar. 24/7 Pain. is based on a seven-year journey by the author, Bob Ranson, from cardiac arrest in 1999 to a life of constant pain and complications, a pacemaker and dozens of only partially-effective medications. Now, the author is living pain and drug free through the discovery of the link between the nerve disorder and glucose levels.

More than a personal journal, Type 4 Diabetes combines the author's experiences and discoveries with ground-breaking research being conducted by experts in Alzheimer's, fibromyalgia and other chronic disorders. The title, Type 4 Diabetes, in fact reflects and pays respect to the work being conducted at Brown Medical School on halting the progressive degeneration of Alzheimer's Disease by treating it with a new class of diabetes medications. In 2006, the Brown team proposed that Alzheimer's be relabeled as Type 3 Diabetes.

Suffering from both autonomic neuropathy and diabetes, the author literally stumbled across his findings as he recorded the pain and effectiveness of the medications to treat the nervous disorder while he monitored daily glucose levels in another diary. The growing realization that he was dealing with at least related diseases led him to decision to use himself as a "lab rat" and test out theories and potential treatment approaches.

In his book, the author describes this process in a concise style and integrates his findings with the writings of medical experts about faulty glucose metabolism -- the cause of diabetes. The author subsequently points to an abnormal interaction between two key hormones, adrenaline and insulin, as being the foundation for the suffering experienced by people with neuropathy, fibromyalgia and hypoglycemia (low blood sugar). He notes, in fact, that researchers at the National Institutes of Health know of the link but lack the funds to investigate it at this time.

The goal of the book, as the author states, is not to answer questions. Rather it is to engage patients and experts to explore in detail the broader implications of blood sugar problems; not just the highs of traditional diabetes treatment, but the low levels of glucose as well.

The questions raised by the author are intriguing, to say the least. The style is easy to read and understand even though the topic is complex. The author backs up his personal journey with enough research, footnotes and citations to lend credence to his arguments. You would do well to buy this book if you or a loved one has diabetes, neuropathy, Alzeiher's, fibromyalgia and/or hypoglycemia.

This fine book is an excellent reference volume on peripheral nerve injuries. It is organized in an anatomically topical manner with chapters covering all major divisions of the peripheral nervous system. Each chapter reviews the anatomy of that division (eg, brachial plexus, median nerve, etc), the clinical phenomenology and pathology of characteristic nerve injuries, diagnosis, clinical electrophysiology, and management. It is written clearly and organized well with good illustrations. This book is my chosen reference when dealing with focal peripheral nerve problems. I haven't seen a competitor volume that is as comprehensive or as clear. Recommended as a component of the standard bookshelf of all neurologists.

My daughter has Peripheral Neuropathy which was caused from CHEMO following treatment for breast cancer. This book, "Numb Toes and Aching Soles," written by John Senneff, is the first book that she says, "tells it like it is."

The book gives accurate descriptions of the various levels and types of pain...from minor to excruciating pain...that can be experienced by the sufferers of Peripheral Neuropathy.

It also describes the various medicines that may help reduce, or completely stop the pain, including Opiate drugs, like Fentynl, Methadone, etc. He accurately points out that usually, only Specialized Pain Doctors are not afraid to dispense them.

(Note: One new medicine that came out after his book was published, is "Lyrica" which seems to help some PN sufferers find relief.)

It should be noted that John Senneff, copes with Peripheral Neuropathy himself, and knows what it is like to deal with it. He is not a doctor, but he himself was looking for answers, and did extensive research on the subject before publishing his book. The book is written in easy to understand language.

I HIGHLY RECCOMMEND THIS BOOK for anyone seeking helpful information about Peripheral Neuropathy...including those in the medical field who truly wish to help their patients find relief from this painful malady.
