Sheila J. Rogers Has Opened Doors of HOPE!Review Date: 2007-06-27
As a concert-pianist, music therapist, author, and an individual living with Tourette Syndrome, I must "take my hat off" to Sheila Rogers for bringing together a cascade of knowledge by various doctors, pediatric neurologists,
authors and many other leading authorities. As there is no cure for Tourette Syndrome, parents, families and adults are desperately seeking out new innovations and ideas with the hope that somewhere a new approach/approaches will come to the forefront. This book offers exactly what so many have been looking for, thought provoking ideas without the side-effects of medication, approaches that
are natural and display underlying common sense!
Since reading the book, I have followed many of the innovative ideas and have found improvement in my own tics.
As a music therapist, which is also a natural, non side effect technique, I have incorporated the many findings in this book with my own student's!
BRAVO! SHEILA J. ROGERS!, what will you come up with next!

organized in a logical fashion with helpful illustrations alongside. A bonus of this book is the CD, which is very user friendly and allows one to establish visual recognition of basic concepts in the needle study such as spontaneous and voluntary activities. The CD also includes unknowns for a short quiz or review.

I keep learning from itReview Date: 2004-06-25
It is about 300 pages, with 25 cases. The first 16 cases deal with common entrapment neuropathies, radiculopathies, etc in upper and lower extremities (8 cases each). The last nine cases are oriented for generalized diseases such as Myasthenia, AIDP, botulism, etc. Each case starts with history/exam followed by few questions. The next 2-3 pages are the NCS/ENG findings. The next 5-15 pages (varies between cases) are rich with very informative discussion about the electrophysiological findings, anatomy with pictures and charts, clinical with few tables, then a lengthy electrophysiological explanations about the particular case and its differential diagnosis, with many tables( key EMG muscles, LEMS versus MG). The case ends with a follow up.
As I said above, I keep learning from this book, and I do not hesitate to recommend it.

A unique perspectiveReview Date: 1999-05-02
Although none of the contributors to "Journeys "is a professional writer this is not an amateurish effort. The writing is straightforward and concise, and the simple power of each individual story is what grabs the reader. Many of the stories are inspirational, several are brutally blunt, but all speak from the heart. They all describe the necessary adjustment process every PALS goes through , both physically and emotionally. But the real beauty of the book lies in the differences of each of the stories. We are reminded again of the many varied progressions and symptoms inherent in ALS . Even more significantly, "Journeys" highlights the individual PALS, each of whom has a unique personality and existence beyond their illness , a fact often overlooked by many.
Successful coping with ALS involves a willingness to learn both new techniques for the body and new attitudes for the soul. "Journeys " is, at its finest, a learning experience . A "veteran "PALS or family member will find much in the book with which they can identify. But, even the most veteran of us also will surely find some new perspectives. For the newly diagnosed, the book offers some insights into what they may expect in the future. More importantly, however, "Journeys" proclaims loudly for all that there is indeed life, much life, after diagnosis.
For Individuals Wanting to Know More about "Living" with ALSReview Date: 2000-02-01

From one with Moebius syndromeReview Date: 1999-08-18
I found myself underlining and starring a variety of points from his book that simply rang true with my own thoughts and experiences. Having grown up during a time when people felt things were best handled when "ignored" (and thus, NOT 'handled' - only "stuffed") I appreciated reading of Coles' observations - they made my own memories and perceptions have a slight more ring of authenticity to them.
I would hope that, at some later date, those of us affected with Moebius ("Moebians" as we call ourselves!) would collaborate jointly on an additional literary project - that of sharing our own thoughts as we experience life without a smile. Anyone who thinks we all lead lives of reclusive solitude would be in for a huge surprise. Our greatest challenge seems to not be that which society percieves, the sad state of not having a smile, but rather the limitations others impose upon us by virtue of what they see and perceive. ('he's not smiling - he must be (1) disinterested, (2) dull, (3) stupid (4) uncaring ..., etc.)' Believe me, THAT kind of assumption is as example of the true burdens we must face on a regular basis - the mistaken notions that strangers have when ignorance and prejudice governs how they interact with people they don't know.
You'll never find another book "out there" that deals with facial expression like this one does - I've looked!
After saying this all, I can also say that I DON'T HAVE A BIG MOUTH!!!!!!!!!!!!! And... I can say THAT with a straight face! :):)
