Excellent facts and representation of experience - since I personally experienced this disorder, and recovered 99%, I am confident in my assessment of book's content. It's good that the information is out there - so few people are even aware of the nature of this disorder!

A must-have for patients, doctors, and caregivers

Gillian-Barre Syndrome is a rare disease, so acurate, up to date resource materials about this are sore lacking. This book helps to fill the void.
Because this disease is rare, there is not a lot of research, and most doctors only rarely encounter a case in their medical career. Medical schools are still teaching out-dated information. Therefore, it is up to the patient and caregiver to stay informed. GBS patients should buy a copy for themselves, and one for their doctor.

A Must Read for GBS Patients/PCP/ICU Nurses

Until I was told I had GBS (Nov 2007), I had never heard of it. Once I read this book cover to cover, I gained an understanding of GBS, which I had been looking for and was unable to find in others. I felt as if someone had been following me around, writing down everything that happened the weeks before and the first two weeks I was in the hospital.

This book should be required reading for all PCP and ICU nurses that are caring for GBS patients. I believe it would give them the compassion they need along with the knowledge, as to what to do for their patients and how to handle situations with their GBS patients that may/will come up.

I have to thank those involved in writing this book, for giving me the information which I had been looking for, in layman terms and was unable to find. And for giving me the ability to look forward, for now I know, it will get better in time, given time.

I know that there is still much I must overcome to gain as much of a recovery as I can, however now I have the tools to make it through.

A 'must' for any serious health library.

Guillain-Barre Syndrome is a condition in which the body's immune system attacks part of the nervous system, resulting in symptoms ranging from tingling and weakness to paralysis. GUILLAIN-BARRE SYNDROME: FROM DIAGNOSIS TO RECOVERY is co-authored by a survivor of the condition and covers everything from early symptoms and treatment options to diagnostic methods and prognosis. From rehabilitation to acute care and coming home again, GUILLAIN-BARRE SYNDROME is a 'must' for any serious health library.

Osteopath specific
Helpful Votes: 10 out of 17 total.
Review Date: 2006-08-05
This is a well written, clear book, but as a massage therapist I found there was a steep learning curve for osteopathic theory and jargon. It took a lot of time to read through to find out that the techniques used were actually very similar to ones I had already learnt, just with a much bigger physiological theory base behind them. Also, it is coming from the perspective of osteo/chiro where apparently they always tend to do manipulations, not massage, so a lot of time is spent on the apparently revolutionary viewpoint that working on muscles helps pain and dysfunction. Duh!

In short, a great book for osteos, but not so great for massage therapists.

What a fantastic book! I am a massage therapist in Australia and wish I had known about this book whilst I was in training. The content is written in a way that makes it very easy to understand. I have also found techniques that work much better than the ones I was taught in class. Well done Leon!

An Excellent Tool

This book is an excellent resource and the techniques within are commonly used within the physical therapy arena. MET, although not a panacea, is a valuable tool that should be included within a comprehensive treatment plan for numerous neuromusculoskeletal conditions. To the layperson; this isn't a book to be bought for self-treatment nor for trying out on family members. Seek advice only from a qualified physician (MD, DO) and then, if the physician deems outpatient therapy is an option for your care, inquire with your physical therapist about muscle energy techniques as part of your treatment plan.

I teach massage therapy here in Australia. Often, students will ask about books they should buy in order to become better therapists, and this is one that I always happily recommend. The techniques are well explained and relatively easy to apply. What's more they are safe, as well as beautifully effective. Anyone interested in improving their results with bodywork should have a look at this (and most of Chaitow's work, as far as I am concerned!).

EXCELLENT!

This is the best book I've come across for introducing a novice to the concepts and practice of MET. Chaitow's other books tend to go into very minute detail about the nervous system component of these techniques. This book is very well ordered and the assessments and techniques don't get lost in the minutae. HIs very clear presentation of the far-reaching effects of dysfunction in one part of the body is excellent. If you are interested in these techniques, this is the book! You can then follow up with his other books on the subject, especially Soft Tissue Manipulations. I'm using this book in a medical massage program in which I am an instructor.

Excellent EMG localization text

Review Date: 2008-11-25
This book is very well organized and is a great resource for residents and those who do electromyography. Detailed pictures show insertion points of both common upper and lower extremity muscles, but also those less common locations including the face and neck. The text explains activations needed to elicit a response as well as possible pitfalls for each location. This is an excellent book written by an excellent clinician.

Coffee Table EMG

Review Date: 2008-10-28
Not being a doctor, I don't do clinical EMG, but I do intraoperative EMG all the time, and it's very useful for that as well. This book doesn't offer any technical information about how to do EMG; as the title indicates, it's an atlas, not a handbook, so you have to know how to do the studies. This is a handy reference for the motor points, innervation, basic clinical correlation, test maneuvers and pitfalls for commonly studied muscles.

It's relatively large, maybe not _quite_ coffee table book size, but you actually could use it that way, because it's interesting, and pretty, and folds open and lies flat well. It's not the best size if you want to carry it around with you. Its size and beauty make it an extreme pleasure to use, and the size allows for very large, nice pictures. It's also inexpensive as such things go.

Each muscle and motor point shown has a detailed anatomical drawing of the muscle with skeletal structures and the motor point, as well as a photograph showing the superficial location of the motor point. That's very useful for finding the best spot to record for intraoperative nerve root monitoring and motor evoked potentials.

I wanted to write this review because the other reviewers were so bloody terse, and being doctors, they only talk about its usefulness for clinical EMG and injections. I wanted to give a little more detail, and to point out that it's also useful if you just want to educate yourself, or brush up, on motor neuroanatomy, and for intraoperative EMG, as well as for clinical medicine. I heartily agree with their high ratings.

An excellent reference

Very useful book, with the use of this book you can do EMG, botox and myobloc injection in hand, forarm and neck muscles very easely. Provides very good pictures of the muscles with their nerve supply and roots/segments. I start to use it in my clinic on patients that needed rare type of EMG testing muscles and it helps alot. This book shows and instruct you to find the muscle that you are looking for, the muscle primary fuction and movement. I highly recommend this book to whom wants to do EMG, botox or myoblock injection.

A Must Have For All Body Therapies!
Helpful Votes: 13 out of 15 total.
Review Date: 2004-03-17
This is an excellent book.
It is a important reference book which I use and read cover to cover. The biggest plus about this book is the concept of alignment, and the various grouping of restrictions and weaknesses within the body. It shows this and explains these (rectrictions vs weakeness) very clearly and specifically which makes it easy to pick up theses patterns in people's bodies.
Although there are better books which are set out better, the commentary and insights contained within the book are invaluable.
It is a bit of a bible in many physical therapy circles.
Don't get too caught up, and remember that this book should only be a start point as things are more complicated than this.

If you ever needed to know what all the muscles in the body were, where exactly they attached to the skeleton, what movement they created, and ways to test how strong they are this is the bible. As a physical therapist, this has been an invaluable book to have both as a student and as a clinician.

Review Date: 2005-08-09
I have read newer books on chronic muscle pain and Fibromaylagia, and they get very contorted in their interpretations. Rightfully so, these are extremely frustrating conditions with no simple solutions, so it is easy to see why people want to grab on to any tangible explanation they can find for pain and fatigue.
Davidson lays these group of problems out in a very clear, uncluttered manner. You won't read this book and think "it's all in my head," nor will you read hypothesis after hypothesis about causes of these problems. You'll find clear explanations about how brain and body interact to cause a lot of pain.
Not an overwhelming amount of complicated information, but basic ways to help yourself starting now, and to see results right away if you are determined.

This is a useful book because it is so clean and concise. He presents a simple program, uses good examples from his practice. What you need to apply his program is a certain level of insight on your own responses to stress and pain, and the determination to make time and concentrate on making some alterations in your life. (relaxing and fun, stretching, exercise, various forms of stress relief).

You won't be put off by this book unless you wanted a complicated, medical explanation of some as yet unknown pathology causing your discomfort. That's not available and may never be, so you might as well start helping yourself.

In addition, speech pathology students would obtain a broad knowledge of this disorder and effective treatment.

Not advisable for massage students!

Review Date: 2006-12-28
Unless you are a doctor, chiropractor, or clinician, this book is NOT for you. Especially if you are a student of massage therapy. The blocky, often illegible graphics, along with extremely compacted information will confuse rather than help someone who is new to trigger point and myofascial therapy. The compact and highly technical information is only good if you have a really strong background in medical terminology. Students, I suggest looking for a different book.
You will also find that the pages in this book easily fall out, and there are a LOT of mistakes in the review questions (they often give you the wrong answer in the answer key). Please consider buying another book.

I had previously bought the book by Clair Davies which is excellent but I wanted more in-depth knowledge. Saw the reviews on this book and ordered it. The cost of the book was definitely not worth the extra information. This book was 3 times the cost of the Clair Davies book with only slightly more useful information. Save your money, buy the Clair Davies book. Or if you really want in-depth knowledge and price is not a factor, buy the 2 volume set by Travell and Simons.

Now in its 5th edition, this book has become "thee" muscle testing book to have. Who's it for? Anyone who has a need to be able to MANUAL muscle test any of the body's muscles. This would include such professionals as doctors, nurses, physical therapists, athletic trainers, personal trainers, etc.

How does the book work? Well, you look up the particular muscle you want to test, look at the picture of the test position, and then simply apply manual pressure to the limb in the instructed direction. If it sounds easy, it is the way this book shows you- included are dozens and dozens of GREAT pictures that show you precisely what to do. So, if you have a need to regularly test muscles, I highly recommend you get this book- it's a little bit more expensive than some of the other muscle testing books, but its the best I've come across so far- in fact it sits right on my desk for reference. Health professionals might also be interested in The Sixty-Second Motivator to help get clients motivated to do their home exercise programs consistently.
