McGoldrick promises to provide helpful tips for working with families of different ethnicities/origins, but falls short on delivering. The histories and backgrounds in each chapter are brief and general at best. There is no concrete info provided on counseling families...my advice is to find another textbook because this one doesn't give anything more than the very, very basics.

I believe this book is vitally important to anyone in the field of Social Work. I have found it to be extremely helpful in getting to know a little more about some of cultural belief of the client I've been working with. I have also gotten their individual perspectives from just asking them a little about their cultural belief systems as they interupt them for themselves.

Well written, easy to read

I ordered this book for a class, it is well written. The chapters are grouped by ethnic group which makes for easy navigation. If you are familiar with psychological or counseling terminology it is an easy read as well.

Excellent reference for doctors; clergy; as well as family counselors, therapists and practitioners. The material on individual cultural characteristics and patterns is well written, well organized, and easily accessible. The wide range of contributors represents the top authorities in each area.

Excellent.

Great resource for anyone involved in counselling someone from an ethnic group other than one's own. The various contributors brought germane observations for each ethnic group. I am a priest who serves many Middle Eastern people. I found the language of this text accessible as a "layperson" to Psychology.

I really enjoyed the book, "Becoming Dead Right." The book was powerfully written and allowed the reader to feel the joys, frustrations, excitement and pain of the men and women in Hospice Care. My favorite part was the poems that were peppered in throughout the book that gave the book an extra special touch. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to read a book that puts a story and face with the people in Hospice Care.

I have been working in the hospice industry full time for a little over two years and I have not seen a better depiction of this topic. Ms. Parker's book gives the most descriptive and genuine look into the true nature of hospice. Most people don't truly know the many benefits of hospice and have a negative viewpoint of hospice. Ms. Parker's book is informative, straightforward, factual and timely. I think her book should be used for training in hospice courses and within hospice organizations across the country.

As much as we tend to "tip-toe" around end-of-life matters with family and friends, Parker however takes the reader on a warm and touching journey with "loud and clear" steps about what she calls, "The Other Side of Through." Throughout the book, you can't help but reflect on your life situation wherever you may be on life's timeline. It is a must-read for those thousands of "baby boomers" like me because 1. We are entering that phase of our life where, quite frankly, we begin to seriously think about our own mortality and all that that means, and 2. Many of us have had to be, or will face the very likely possibility of being, a care-giver to a loved one. "Being Dead Right" answers so many questions on the issues of hospice care almost from A-Z and is told in a very readable, informative and humane way. In her book, Parker indeed lets full sun shine on a topic long lain hid. Excellent job.

Francis Shani Parker Does it Right

Let's face it: Becoming Dead Right is a startling use of double entendre. It grew on me as a reader, since ultimately there's no time that straight talk is more required than at, and about, end of life. Placing judgement aside, "wrong" ways of dying have detrimental effects on patient-families; "right" ways of dying make end days as humane as can be, for both the dying and their survivors.

Humaneness is the critical quality that is often misplaced or absent from critical care. Parker's humanity is palpable. Every school principal must imbue it (even if half her kids may go to their own graves in denial of their school principal's humanity), so it's no surprise she would manifest it as a hospice worker and writer.

Yet I was surprised, and touched, and bolstered. As a writer on end-of-life matters, I expect others who write on dying and death to do so with great dignity, empathy, and poise. The subject requires it. So why my surprise? I think it stems from several directions.
- Poetry. If inuendo has no place in end-of-life conversations, and metaphor ignites understanding as it relieves duress, poetry occupies a middle ground. Parker's inclusion of personal poems throughout adds a a poignant, exploratory dimension to her narrative.
- Cultural mileu #1: Inside the Looking Glass. Reading messages that emanate from inside hospice differs from reading information about hospice. Parker gives us the real deal, distinct from intellectual abstraction (no matter how important the latter may be when the subject is end-of-life choices). Parker's "person-studies" help explain, in a very accessible manner, what hospice offers.
- Cultural mileu #2: Race. For those of us outside the black community, Becoming Dead Right offers a glimpse into the human fabric that makes Black America rich in ways that are intrinsic to their unique identity as a people. The glimpse arises naturally, through the telling. It's subtle, and probably unintentional--making this book all the more valuable.

And if Parker can help manifest her vision of Boomer Haven on a national scale, I'd queue up when it's my turn--even if I wasn't already predisposed.

This book was enlightning and a pleasure to read. I found it difficult to put down. Each of many patient related stories told was captivating and conveyed significant and often imperative messages. Comprehensive, insightful, empathetic, amusing, comforting and instructive are all applicable adjectives. Becoming Dead Right is a gift of sagacity to us all.

Dr. LaVeist is such an eloquent speaker. I had the pleasure of hearing him speak today at the University of North Carolina- Chapel Hill's School of Public Health. He captivated all of us with his topic of "Problems and Prospects for Health Disparities Research".

He has made tremendous strides in collaborating with the community of South West Baltimore to gather information on health behavior, psychosocial, housing and community conditions, utilization and access to healthcare information.

If you want a real view of race, ethnicity and minority health, and you are compelled to take part in health disparities research, then buy this book. He autographed mine :-).

For everyone interested in health care

This readable compendium of stellar research is important reading for anyone involved in or interested in health care today. It is also an escellent compilation of well-designed studies that challenge status quo thinking; it would be an excellent text for a research methodology course. This Public Health reader is also appropiratie for individual readings as well as a text for courses in nursing, medicine, public health, social policy, and health care administration.

The readings are compelling, disturbing, and encouraging. The book does a good job of addressing historical and political factors, presenting startling health disparity data, documenting differential health care experiences, demonstrating health care provider biases in perceptions of patients and subsequent treatment, and outlining related research challenges.

The book leaves the reader wtih a fresh understanding of national health disparies, the issues our nation faces in achieving better health for all, and the need for proactrve policies, procedures, and research that can close the gap between majority and minority health and health care,

A very comprehensive overview of the issues around minority health in the United States. Does not deal with international issues, but the topic of race, ethnitity and health in the US is big enough. You are interested in learning about the topic, this is a very good place to start. You will be depressed after reading some of this. The studies described in the book are convincing and you can't help but conclude that we have a serious problem with regard to minority health.

Foremost in today's fast-paced technological progress is the facility to access information. Health, no doubt, features prominently among any individual's areas he or she wants to keep informed about. One particular area is how the urban environment might affect his and his family's health. For obvious reasons comprehensive and satisfactory information in this regard is not readily available in the mass media. In the "Handbook of Urban Health" over forty specialists in this field treat this subject from a number of angles and make it possible, even for the layman, to grasp all the intricacies connected with health problems prevailing in today's cities. For the most part these research reports are quite readable. This is no easy task considering the complex make-up of today's urban populations. I highly recomend it.

Excellent for the scientist, interesting read for the layman

This book is extremely well-planned and presented. The introductory chapter expounds the new concept of "Urban Health" both for the professional and the aspiring student. It also sets the scope of the book as being a "bridge between urban health inquiry and public health practice." This is achieved by the introduction of the Integrative Chapters which come at the end of each of three parts i.e. Populations, Methods and Practice. These integrative chapters are short and written in an easy to read, fluent style. They are excellent introductory pieces for those outside the field who want to have a quick overview of the book, and for the student who expects a non-biased commentary on the ideas expounded on in the previous chapters As well, they also form the thread which links such divergent topics as urban planning, legal frameworks, cost effectiveness, urban health in developing countries, in one particular city and in huge cities in general, in the environment and in the customs and practices of the populations who inhabit these environments. This book is recommended both for the general reader and as a textbook for the newly emerging science of Urban Health.

This book is particularly well written and organized, providing an overview on the health of cities. It has information on the U.S., but also some especially well constructed chapters on urban health in developing countries. The book covers health issues for special populations such as the elderly and children, but then also goes on to discuss methods for assembling or being a consumer of relevant health information. Finally, the book has a section for public health practice that was put together by some of the most experienced experts in the country. While unique as a reference book for those working on the issues of health in cities, this also can be a good text book.

Aponte does a great job of integrating theory with the "real world" of poverty. Students have found this book to be very helpful in understanding the struggles of multi-problem, chaotic families who present for treatment. Aponte uses a strength based approach to build on what they have vs. what they do not.

How unfortunate that Harry Aponte has written only 1 book. His wisdom is something therapists covet. This book is a good sampling of this compassionate scholar.

So what happens when you gather up a group of young, gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgendered and other label-full or label-free writers and ask them to share a real life experience to be published in a book?
ANSWER:
The Full Spectrum.
A collection of non-fiction stories that can be found in the fiction section of your favorite library or bookstore.
Why the fiction section you ask?
Fiction sells.
Anthologies come and go, come and go, usually unnoticed and dammit!- we don't want this book to just `go'. We need its readers to find it first. This book is out there so that you realize, finally realize that you're not alone. Oh sure, your closet's cramped, there's no leg room in that 4X4 box that only fits you and your fears but...the book is small. Structured perfectly to fit the hands of anyone who wants to let a little laughter, a little heartache, a little hope and reality into their life.
The writers...yes, we're young. Teenagers and random 20-somethin' year olds, but our stories(experiences) are ageless.
So, look for the heartbreakingly beautiful book chock-full `o non-fiction in the fiction section of any store that sells books.
We wanted to share a little piece of ourselves with you and if you go to [...], you're welcome to share with each of us as well.

I bought this because I am not a paramedic. However, I am 'in-charge' of making sure they the equipment they need to learn their trade. I included this book in their practice lab sessions and they constantly "forget" to bring it back. Most of them break down and buy their own copy. It has detailed scenarios and follow-up solutions for them to quiz themselves. It's the perfect accessory to our MegaCode Kelly mannquinn, which suffers from every possible trauma or illness the programers to can fit into him.
