This book is wonderful, even if you get it just to look at the pictures. I'm new to the world of vegan baking, and I bought this along with Isa's 2 other cookbooks. I like that they give you useful information along with the recipes. I've made 2 cupcakes so far, I wasnt blown away by either one, but I plan to try some of the more interesting ones in here. You do need a lot of ingredients that the average baker doesnt normally have on hand, but I'm slowly stocking up so I can take over the world with my cupcakes!

A great way to introduce veganism to family

I've had this book for awhile, but I feel it's time to finally review it. This cookbook is truly the perfect way to show family and friends that being vegan isn't a big deal--no really. I'm the only vegan in my family, but I can't wait to knock everyone's socks off at Christmas with these delicious recipes (I'm thinking blueberry lemon creme cake for the adults, and 'decorate-it-yourself' banana split cupcakes for the younguns). Please buy this book. I love exotic vegan cooking as much as the next person, but I don't have to funds to acquire the really weird ingredients. This book has those exotic ingredients, but also simple recipes with common ingredients. I'm hoping this book will propel me to official baker of the extended family, making each gathering a little less cruel!

I've been a vegan since 1989 (and a vegetarian since 1984) and didn't give much thought to baking or sweets because I didn't know how to get around dairy and especially eggs in baking. Cupcakes were the last thing I ever thought I would bake. The recipes are amazing and what I love the best is that the cupcakes don't fall apart. I baked 2 dozen cupcakes recently for my niece's birthday party and people couldn't believe that they were vegan.....

Highly, highly recommended!!!!

I found this book after a referal from a lactation consultant after my third baby was born and in the nicu. I had low milk supply issues with each baby but it was worse after my baby was in the nicu. This book offers help that seems to be hard to find from doctors and the medical proffession at large. At the very least it explains things in a way that you can finally understand what is going on, rather being told some bland explanation from a doctor that doesn't offer any help.

I fell in love with this book. I had a lot of trouble breastfeeding my first child and as I was preparing for pregnancy with my second child, I wanted answers. This book explained a lot of the troubles that I personally had. The book is also a good nutrition book, not just for pregnant or nursing mothers, but for anyone. I highly recommend this book for anyone that is looking for nutrition or herbal advise for pregnancy and breastfeeding.

This book is outstanding. I had originally bought "Eat Well, Lose Weight, While Breastfeeding" and was so disappointed, I sent it back to Amazon. Then I found "Mother Food." I can't tell you what a valuable resource this has been for me. It has a very international feel (the author is Swiss) because it references cultures from all over the world and connects you with moms from ever corner of the globe on what works best for producing the highest quality of breastmilk for your baby. The best recipe in the book is for the "green drink." It's a blend of raw fruit and vegetable juices that increases the quantity and quality of your breastmilk amazingly. I make this drink everyday and since then have been able to pump a full 5 oz more milk each day. I have looked and felt so much better since beginning some of the routines described in this book and my baby has been much happier and had hardly any colic! You absolutely MUST buy this book.

This book was easy to understand, practical and informative. I've read several books about food allergies at this point, and food allergies for dummies is the one I found to be most helpful. As a grandmother of an almost 3 year old grandson, with a severe peanut/tree nut allergy, I found this book great...but sadly, not complete. What is missing? Information about products, other than food, that can cause an alergic reaction. Products, for instance, like bean bag chairs stuffed with peanut shells; certain craft items, like paint or Moon Sand, made with peanut/tree nut oils. All are dangerous and can cause a reaction by contact. To keep him as safe as possible, I DON'T BUY ANYTHING UNLESS IT HAS A CUSTOMER CARE PHONE NUMBER LISTED ON THE LABEL. Everything he eats or comes in contact with must be checked and double checked!! Hope this helps others with the same difficulty.

Recipes, Resources and Really Useful Tips!

Review Date: 2008-11-30
This book is a welcome addition to anyone w/milk allergy intolerance, multiple food allergies or vegan. There is a ton of useful information about where to go for additional recipes or resources. Alisa includes lots of safe substitutes. And this book is very different from many other dairy free books because it does not use a soy substitute in every recipe.

There are a lot of yummy and kid friendly recipes and tricks and handy lists for where dairy hides.

If you're new to living without dairy, or if you've been at it for awhile and need a bunch of new and delcious dairy free (and egg free) recipes, get "Go Dairy Free"

excellent resources

Whether you're avoiding dairy for health or ethical reasons, you will love this comprehensive book that is both a guide to dairy free living and a cookbook.

The book begins with an explanation of what dairy is, including information about pasteurization, homogenization, lactose-free milk, kefir and milk from other mammals besides cows. She goes on to explain why some people avoid dairy--because of allergies, lactose intolerance, a vegan diet, autism, general health and more. She even addresses infant allergies--how to prevent and recognize them.

Another section is devoted to the question that many people wonder about--how can you get enough calcium with drinking milk. Fleming dispels the myth that you need dairy in your diet, tells you how much calcium you really do need, and lists many calcium rich (nondairy) foods. Before heading on to recipes, the book addresses eating out, traveling, and shopping--giving the reader insight into avoiding dairy when not at home.

Then, my favorite part: the recipes! And what great recipes they are. Perfectly Pear Muffins, Grilled Vegetable Strudel, Better Than Ice Cream, Vanilla Pudding, Lemon Struesel Squares and lots, lots more. A really nice feature is the chart that lists all of the recipes and notes which common allergens they do or do not contain, as well as whether the recipes are vegan.

I highly recommend this cookbook.

Go Dairy Free is the book I wish I had seven years ago when my daughter was diagnosed with a severe dairy allergy. But, hey, I have it now and so can you! This fabulous book by Alisa Fleming combines informational sections on understanding dairy, eating out, and shopping, with directions for dairy substitutes and tons of recipes. Many of the recipes are vegan as well as dairy free.

The lists of dairy-free resources and product recommendations are very helpful. I can tell that this is going to be one of our most-used books in our quest to go dairy free for our daughter.

A MUST for anyone with dairy, egg, wheat, & gluten allergies

Review Date: 2004-03-15
Our 4 year old son has multiple food allergies. We started cooking dairy, egg and peanut free 10 months ago and we recently had to add wheat and gluten to the list of banned foods. This is the only cookbook that I could find that provided recipes that are wheat, gluten, egg and dairy free. Don't worry, if you can eggs and/or dairy this is still the cookbook for you. The recipes are given with and without eggs and dairy. I have used the dessert section extensively and some of the breads and breakfast recipes.

This book has been a lifesaver for our family. Anyone with a small child knows that they still want bread, pancakes, chocolate chip cookies, birthday cakes, and brownies. Everyone in the family enjoys the food we cook using this book - even our 2-1/2 year old.

The only thing I would caution new users on is to thoroughly read the recipes before starting and you may not want too many little helpers in the kitchen the first time. My first try at pancakes had to be disposed of!

This book was a tremendous help to me when I had to cook for weekend guests - since I was gluten intolerant and didn't want to make two different meals, this book contains recipes on how to make "normal" meals that everybody can enjoy, yet be gluten-free. What is especially helpful is the menu plans for special occasions - no more pulling my hair out trying to figure out what to serve. And when my birthday came up, I was thrilled to see all the different cake recipes I can use. The cake and muffin recipes I tried were light, fluffy and scrumptuous. My guests had no idea they were gluten-free. And there are even several cake shapes and decorating ideas that would be especially fun for children. I highly recommend this book for anyone that is gluten-intolerant or has food sensitivities.

If you thought that you have to miss out on special treats because of food allergies or intolerances, think again! With recipes for everything from Cookies to Wedding Cakes, this book is just what you need. It is a complete guide to cooking special foods for those with food allergies or intolerances. Dr. Fenster writes from her own experience as a culinary professional and as an individual with wheat intolerance. In addition to original recipes, the book contains directions on how to make substitutions in other recipes and where to buy special products such as wheat-free flours. Her list of hidden sources of wheat, gluten, eggs, milk, corn and soy is an invaluable resource for those who need to avoid even small amounts of those foods. This book could help make cooking easy and eating enjoyable again!

As a new mother with a daughter who has MSPI, I was thrilled to find this cookbook. In order to continue nursing, I knew my diet would have to change and was overwhelmed with how I should go about this dietary change. This cookbook was extremely helpful especially with the "Ingredients to Avoid" and the "Product List" sections. I noticed that the individual with the negative comments, complained about the "Product List" not being accurate. I NEVER had a problem as long as I stuck with the specific product Mrs Wise listed. As a new mother, who continues to be sleep deprived, struggling with this "new" life of motherhood & nursing, and concern with my daughter's MSPI, I was thrilled to find some easy recipes that I could throw together which my picky husband thoroughly enjoys. Mrs Wise I would like to extend my thanks to you from my entire family.

Thank you! This has been a lifesaver for me and son!

We recently purchased the book Abby the Alley Cat: Staying Safe From Diary for my daughter who we recently found out has multiple food allergies. She loves it. I like that it puts a positive spin on refusing dairy, rather than making it sound like she's missing out on something. It is empowering for her to have that reinforcement and there is a great reminder that there are yummy things that she can eat that are safe. The book is also beautifully illustrated. My daughter's favorite picture is of the french poodles. Even my boys, who don't have allergies, love this book. I highly recommend this book and all three of my kids agree.

Everything I have tried in this book has turned out wonderful. I have several other dairy-free, egg-free cookbooks and they all call for exotic ingredients or Egg Replacer product which makes all my baked goods have a strange salty taste. With this cookbook, I have made delicious cakes, brownies, muffins and cookies completely dairy and egg free. I am sending my recipes to my friends to use for my kids. Thanks so much Linda Coss. I'll be the first to buy your next cookbook!

I must say, this cookbook was and has continued to be a saving grace for my family!! My son, who is now almost 4-years-old and allergy free now, had a terrible problem with milk and egg allergy and slight allergy to peanut in the beginning. He now, thanks in part to these recipes and my staying completely away from all of these for a long period of time has outgrown his allergies. I must say though, there are recipes in this book that will be with me forever. I have friends who have kids with allergies and I am able to provide them with recipe ideas or make them myself, especially at birthday parties so the children do not feel left out. Most of the cookbooks I found did not give you the substitutes, it would just tell you to substitute with something that is egg-free or milk free. What help is that? This cookbook, however, gave you everything.

These products are out there and so much better than you could imagine. If your child suffers from allergies, I highly recommend this cookbook to you!!! My children whole family has enjoyed the recipes it provides.

I am a huge fan of Ms. Coss' first cookbook, WHAT'S TO EAT? THE MILK-FREE, EGG-FREE, NUT-FREE FOOD ALLERGY COOKBOOK. My son is allergic to all three things mentioned in the title, so I knew I had to have it. There are so many wonderful recipes and helpful hints in this cookbook. There is one recipe in this book, though, that makes it definitely worth the cover price for me. It's the recipe for Holiday Cut-Out Cookies. Every holiday, birthday and major event, my friend and I make cut-out cookies and decorate them. They are always a huge hit with the kids (and many parents too!) Of course, my son could never eat them because sugar cookies are filled with butter, eggs and milk. He didn't really care until he turned 3, and then he began begging me for his own cookies -- it just broke my heart. Thanks to Ms. Coss' cookbook, I can now make him cut-out cookies; and just last month for his birthday, I make him ones that looked like the characters in the Cars Movie. As a mother of a young child who is always being left out at parties when it comes to food, this recipe has really changed his life.

Thank you so much for your wonderful cook book. I felt it was wrote just for my family!. I have 3 boys and my youngest is 16 months old and has severe food allergies to nuts, eggs and dairy. Since finding out his allergies at 12 months I have felt stumped with what to make for family meals that we can all eat with out feeling like a short order cook make separate items for Levi. Due to his asthma and food allergies he is small for his age and I am always worried hes not getting enough carbs. For months now we have been feeding him fruit, veggies and meat almost only because I can only find limited things to mean his restrictions. But to much fruit and veggies was upsetting his tummy so when I started looking for allergy cookbooks I was disappointed that they all were for the top 8, I didn't want to take out more out of his diet than I had to until I came across your cookbook. It was exactly the same allergies we have I was soo ecstatic I immediately ordered it and called my mom to tell her there was hope! Thank you so much. I have had in only 2 weeks but have made at least 8 items so far and the whole family loves it. finally we are having family meals again! This book has been such a answer to prayer! My kids who are all skinny love the latkes and I'm happy to make something that will stick to there bones, and the chocolate chip bunt cake is a favorite here now, I even made it in regular pans for a birthday cake because my 6 year old loved it so much asked for it for his birthday! And tonight we are trying the wheat germ and jam chicken recipe.

I just want you to know how much I love this book and I am so thankful that you took the time to compile all your egg, dairy and nut wisdom for other moms out there with the same battles.
