I've been purchasing this primer each time new edition comes out and it has become major source of reference in topics of metabolic bone disease for me. Topics covered are comprehensive yet the coverage is concise and to the point most of the time. I think the book has become a classic textbook in the field of metabolic bone diseases. I know I will be waiting for the 7th edition.

The book is well written and has many useful tables. This book is the official primer published by the American Society for Bone and Mineral Research. It is writen by many intenationally known scientists in the field of bone and mineral research. It is a book that belongs to any physician caring for patients with bone diseases not limited to osteoporosis.

I'm almost half-way through this book, and for the first time I'm understanding the concepts behind metabolic diseases. Rather than overwhelming the reader with biochemistry, the author helps organize the diseases into practical categories and emphasizes concepts rather than details. This book is a good read, plus it will serve as an excellent resource for future reference. Highly recommended for any primary care provider who cares for infants and children.

Excellent review of strategies for the evaluation of suspected inborn errors of metabolism. Simple and eloquent writing makes this an exceptional introduction to the topic for students, residents and fellows. Organized by organ system and symptom complex, it makes for easy referencing to generate a differential diagnosis as well. Would highly recommend for genetics, neurology and pediatrics training programs. It will be instituted into our required reading for rotating residents in our Child Neurology department. The price is very reasonable and well within the means of trainees.

I'm now into the vast subject of inherited metabolic diseases for about one and a half year. This book is the perfect guide in dayly clinical work. It gives a short introduction at the first page of every chapter, showing the metabolic pathway and giving a short summery of the different types of metabolic defects in this part of metabolism. It's not only brief but also based on the recent publications. The very systematic structure and the much better index of this new edition is another reason why there is no day without Fernandez et al. in my clinical work.

Editor William Roberts, MD, of the American Journal of Cardiology writes in his "Good Books in Cardiovascular Disease Appearing in 1999" that the Manual of Lipid Disorders "is an excellent book. I use it frequently." Although the book is written for the physician reader, it may also be helpful for the educated layperson interested in knowing cutting-edge information about reducing risk for coronary heart disease. There is an extensive discussion of the concept of rupture-prone, or vulnerable, plaques featured in January 2000 on ABC's 20/20.

This book was required for my class but I think it's something I'll keep referring to throughout my career. Designed for review for boards, it is short, sweet, and to the point. It gives clinical relevance as well as background info without going into excessive detail. The book is easy to follow and the figures and tables are very helpful. There are even board-style questions in the back of the book. I highly recommend this book.

This is a suitably vast book for a vast subject. It covers every aspect of the application of human genetics to medicine, and the reviews are not only an ideal introduction to a genetic disease, but are heavily referenced as well. This makes it ideal as a guide to the most recent literature on the subject. The introductory chapters are essential reading as well.

There is no doubt that an incredible amount of work went into this extremely comprehensive tome. I never failed to find what I was looking for especially with an attending impatiently tapping his foot while I was running to find out what he was talking about.

The format is quick and easy to understand and use. And there are syndromes you just never knew even existed.

excellent , in depth explanation of why we hold onto fat and the foods that cause the "fat trap" to store energy.I found the book sometimess a little to in depth but it's worth it to understand, in order to change.I use this book and Zone meals to modify my daily eating habits, not to hard to do with all the great menu ideas and glycemic index suggestions. highly reccomended.

This book is more like a catalog of things that you can purchase from the ZONE store. Pushing everything from blood testing to Zone meal replacers.
They should send you the book for free because it has so much advertising.
I would say that the greater part of the book is a compilation of recipes very reminiscent of the other Zone diet books.
The Science does not get down to the exact details of how Barry thinks this lack of fish oil is actually causing the diseases he implies are the result of the imbalance of fatty acids caused by our modern diet. All and all a very disappointing book. If you must have it, buy mine used. Oops here I go, pushing my products...I must have learned something from the book.

Toxic Fat Is All About The Inflammation, Stupid!
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2008-11-17
The most cutting-edge nutrition expert of our day has got to be Zone Diet creator Dr. Barry Sears. Long before anyone was talking about inflammation as a root cause in heart disease and other health issues, he was coming up with solutions to the problem that now is becoming more and more evident is the primary reason why people are suffering from heart attacks, cardiovascular issues, and even death.

Don't be fooled by the title, though. Dr. Sears is NOT describing dietary fat that you consume in your daily meals, but rather that fat that just sits there in your abdomen and never goes away. He believes that fat is "toxic" because it is a sign of the untreated inflammation that can and will lead to greater health problems down the road.

Attacking it with an aggressive specialized fish oil treatment along with the Zone dietary approach can "reverse toxic fat syndrome in 30 days." That's what Dr. Sears says will happen and has the case studies of real people who have done it to prove his point. Whether you buy into the Zone diet or not, this book is well worth it just for the information on reducing inflammation to slow down the aging process, improve heart health, and restore your overall health to where it needs to be. That's something you can trust Dr. Sears will watch out for. He always has!

Best book on inflammation epidemic

Good news! It's not your fault you're fat, it's good to be a bit fat (if not inflamed) and overweight people often outlive normal people.

This is the best book I have read so far that explains that it's not really about the fat; it's about the inflammation (and how to get rid of it).

Using the metaphor "The Perfect Nutritional Storm," Sears guides us through the history of how cheap food became available in the USA: not the good fruits and vegetables, but rather the cheap omega-6 fats and high glycemic carb foods. He points specifically to three factors that have created this health disaster in the USA.

The nice thing about Dr. Sears' books is that you don't have to read the previous ones to understand the material because he always has nice summaries of his prior discoveries---so this book includes info on not only the inflammation issue, but also the Zone diet and fish oil.

If you've ever been envious of someone who can eat all they want and not gain weight, you won't be after reading this book. It's not only the overweight who are susceptible to toxic problems. And an overweight person can even be healthy. Sears claims that the heaviest man in the world went on this diet and lost 400 pounds (at the time of the writing) and even long before reaching his ideal weight, achieved very ideal blood chemistry.

Sears takes us on a tour of the hormones of hunger. You will better understand the delicate balance of what causes hunger when you read this.
I wonder if someone could come up with a raw food vegetarian zone diet. That would be the Perfect Antidote to the Perfect Nutritional Storm.
