Read For The Health of Your Family

Ms. Jackson has provided an informative resource for women and their families who need to learn more about breast cancer, detection, treatment and psyche. But more importantly, this book provides an accurate depiction, although little understood truth, that our health care system has been taken over by lawyers and their political allies, who threaten to eliminate the technological tools and the health care professionals and facilities we take for granted, with their win at all cost assault on the medical profession. Read this book, and then send a copy to your U.S. Senator.

This is a must read for mothers and daughters everywhere!

Upon completion of this book, I immediately ordered a copy to send to my daughter. The book is so well written and organized that I found whenever I had a question, all I had to do was read further into the chapter and it would be answered. I found the explanations completely accessible yet not condescending. The prose is understated and so compelling. It is significant that the authors combined trying personal experience with important clinical information and turned it into something that can benefit so many people. After reading this book, I am convinced that we are in danger of destroying the best option we have for early detection of breast cancer. If we are not all aware of the problem and working actively for a solution, then we are doomed to passively stand by and watch the death of this important diagnostic tool.

An in-depth and thought-provoking study of the beneficial diagnostic tool of mammography

Co-authored by Rene Jackson (Special Procedures Nurse in Medical Imaging at Charlotte Regional Medical Center, Punta Gorda, Florida) and Alberto Righi (Medical Director of a radiology group in Florida), The Death Of Mammography: How Our Best Defence Against Breast Cancer Is Being Driven To Extinction is an in-depth and thought-provoking study of the beneficial diagnostic tool of mammography and the legal and economic challenges this procedure is encountering. Comprehensively analyzing the positive use of the use of the mammogram, The Death Of Mammography provides readers with a clear description of breast cancer and treatment options, explains mammography technology, reveals how legislative and legal issues are restricting breast-cancer screening, and realistic solutions and reforms. The Death Of Mammography is very strongly recommended for non-specialist general readers and health activists involved with the issue of breast cancer and mammography.

A must read for all health professionals

The Death of Mammography is a book that every health care professional needs to read. The authors introduce each chapter with a case study that continues throughout the entire book. The information in each chapter is priceless and includes information on the history of breast cancer and mammography; the progression of the disease; diagnostic procedures; prevention and treatment; education of radiologists and technologists; litigation and tort reforms; and a few additional topics. The book is an eye-opener into both the medical and legal sides of breast cancer, and serves as a first-rate reference manual.

Jackson and Righi have struck a fine balance between social history, clinical information, and legal issues. There's a minimal amount of legalese and doctor-speak (and whatever techinical terms are used are clearly explained). A particular favorite of mine was the chapter on the history of breast cancer -- I had no idea about St. Agatha! All in all, a good read on a confusing (and potentially frightening) topic.

I just got back from the course taught by Dr. Tabar and it was phenomenal! If you can't attend his course, then you must have this book. It covers all the material in the course in a clear and concise manner using almost 1600 images. This would also be a great reference for pathologists and surgeons who perform breast surgery, and techs interested in why they do what they do would find this text a great resource. I will use it as an adjunct learning tool after attending the seminar - I would recommend that buyers of this text do the same. Find the time to go to the seminar and then get the book - and good luck in your practice!

This book is really fantastic.
The reader has the pleasant sensation to go through the book like he is attending a course of the Author, step by step, with no rush, having really the time to understand every concept of what he is reading.
Even pathological images were handy for me, because i was given the tools to understand them.
The style of the book is very particular as well, because the method is to teach you to understand what you see, explaining accurately what happened to that patient so that you see that image on the mammogram. I think this method is absolutely brilliant.
Furthermore the book is full of high-quality images and the text is not redundant and tiring, but it is focused to allow you to understand the mammograms.
I think every breast radiologist should have this book!

A welcome addition to the medical community

Clinical studies by the famed Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York City and the equally prestigious University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston are among many hundreds cited by the authors in the production of this most authoritative medical treatise. Delfino and Day's book is without a doubt an important and insightful new work on radiation carcinogenesis that is sure to be welcomed by the worldwide medical community. Suitable as a textbook for teaching the next generation of caregivers, this book does a splendid job of providing recommended treatment options for most cancers and at various stages of development. Readable by clinicians, physicians, and their patients, we can expect this book to be a staple in every serious library for many years to come.

All about quality of life

Upon learning of my tumor, my doctor recommended I take a look at this book, which I then preordered directly from the publisher. As my doctor alluded to having been one of the doctors who reviewed the work, the authors do a fine job of explaining with great sensitivity some of the treatment options that are available to me. Everything is explained. The writing is clear enough and chock full of facts that are always backed up by the clinical studies done by doctors and scientists through out the world. I especially like the authors way of referencing the clinical studies to the "best cancer hospitals" so that patients like myself can take advantage of our options. It is as the authors say all about quality of life and just because I have been diagnosed with cancer does not mean that I will not survive and live my life to the fullest.

The Buntus Cainte books and tapes are an easy way to learn some basic Irish vocabulary and simple sentences. The series is designed to be "first steps in spoken Irish," and the steps are easy to follow. The tapes and pictures are helpful and make the course fun, for adults as well as children.

Love the book! It's very simple to read for my first attempts and progresses very nicely into conversations. I haven't had a chance to listen to the cassette tapes yet (yes, cassette tapes), but I'm sure they will be just as easy to follow as the book is. I just hope my old cassette player works when I clean off the dust.

I read this concise book on my first month doing mammography and found it very helpful in identifying pathology and, as importantly, what to do next on the equivocal cases-- which are the majority. This you won't get from an image atlas.

Rad Tech's Guide to Mammography: Physics, Instrumentation, and Quality Control

Donald R. Jacobson, ISBN: 0-632-04499-3, pp 136, 24 figures

The Rad Tech's Guide Series, by Blackwell Science, is composed of six softcover books between 111 and 207 pages in length. The titles in the series are Radiation Protection; Equipment Operation and Maintenance; MRI: Basic Physics, Instrumentation, and Quality Control; MRI: Imaging Procedures, Patient Care, and Safety; CT: Imaging Procedures, Patient Care, and Safety; and Mammography: Physics, Instrumentation, and Quality Control. The intended audience is radiologic technologists who are currently working in the field and those who are seeking advanced certification in one of the imaging specialties. The individual books are written by radiologic technologists and other allied health professionals.

Each book is divided into chapters that highlight key topics within each subject area. For example, the books Mammography: Physics, Instrumentation, and Quality Control and MRI: Basic Physics, Instrumentation, and Quality Control each begin with a fundamental review of the principles of modality being discussed. Data acquisition and image recording and formatting are addressed. A discussion of aspects of quality control rounds out each text. The book Equipment Operation and Maintenance includes common aspects of diagnostic imaging such as x-ray generators and tubes, scatter radiation control, fluoroscopy, and quality control.

Throughout the series, the textbooks are arranged in summary format to provide a précis for each topic. This format enhances the review aspects of the series and provides the reader with a stripped-down but accurate review of the materials. Diagrams and images are used throughout the series to illustrate important concepts.

The authors have produced a credible overview of each topic; thus the shortcomings of the series are few. The coverage of material is accurate and broad but not very deep. A reader looking for more depth on a particular topic will likely need to refer to a more comprehensive textbook. This is consistent with the explicit goal of the series, which is to provide a reference and examination review series. Though the books are softcover, the paper quality, printing, and binding are all excellent. Many of the diagrams and images are reproduced with permission from other sources. The quality of the diagrams and images enhances the text by illustrating key concepts.

A disappointment for the series is the quality of radiologic images in the books on magnetic resonance imaging, computed tomography (CT), and mammography. The images are not reproduced well and lack contrast, making it difficult to discern anatomy and important details. The omission of a book dedicated to CT physics, instrumentation, and quality control is also disappointing. Nonetheless, the Rad Tech's Guide Series is overall an excellent work.

The Rad Tech's Guide Series fulfills its goals by offering a useful, concise review of important concepts in diagnostic radiology and advanced imaging modalities at a reasonable cost. Working radiologic technologists and radiologists will benefit from the excellent overview of the various topics. Furthermore, the dedication of individual books to particular topics allows readers to purchase only those works that meet their individual needs.

This book is very well written and weaves an interesting dialog about the cross-over between science and politics with regard to patient health issues. I found it very useful! You don't have to be a doctor or medical professional to understand what Dr Finkel is talking about, which makes it one of the few books about health that has widespread appeal along with being very informative. Definitely buy this book if you want to learn more about an important topic and its treatment in today's society.
