Secrets and LayersReview Date: 2005-04-28
Once again, we are pulled into the psychotic world of Rena, a woman living with guilts and secrets. She begins seeing mysterious visions, and unwinds before our eyes. Whitlow portrays her with perfection. Along the way, Alex, her lawyer, begins to look for ways to disengage herself from this nightmarish client, while also looking for ways to build a deeper relationship with Ted Morgan, a Christian music minister. Their relationship goes through ups and downs, but they are drawn closer as the troubles of Rena's past loom larger.
The ending provides some satisfying emotional moments, even if a few of the mystery aspects are wrapped up a bit quickly. Although the book didn't hold the same sway over me as the first in the Santee Series, it's definitely a must for Whitlow fans.

Encouragement for Real MomsReview Date: 2008-03-03
I found this book "light", but inspiring; helpful, but not preachy. Her writing deserves to be called wise, because she manages something that so few parenting/advice books do - she draws out practical truths that really do apply to everyone and then gives examples of how she applies them to her own family.
The book is organized into six main sections (that are divided into smaller essays):
How Can I Survive the Preschool Years Without Losing My Mind?
How Can I Fill My Marriage with More of `The Better' and Less of `The Worse'?
What Kind of Role Does a Catholic Mom Play in This Great Big World?
How Can I Get on Top of the Housework When It Feels Like I'm Smothering Under It?
How Can I Make Our Faith an Integral Part of Family Life?
Can I Really Have a Spiritual Life While Caring for All These Little People?
She tops it off with a simple, but helpful resource guide for Catholic families.
Like talking with a friend Review Date: 2007-08-04
You might pick it up thinking, "Who is this woman to give me advice? Has she lived so long and so perfectly that she can dish up the goods on my life when she doesn't even know me?"
Then, you might open it, and read Danielle's preface, and find out that she is the kind of woman to pick up an advice book (you know the kind I mean: one with a rigid prescription for how to eat, drink, live, marry, parent, sleep, breathe and forego sugar) and think:
(from the preface):
"Who does this woman think she is? I find myself furiously thinking as I flip to the back cover to read the author's bio. Is her family really so perfect? Doesn't her husband ever leave his balled-up, smelly socks on the bedroom floor and she snaps at him about it? Don't her kids ever argue about who's looking at whom and who got the last cookie last time and who got it the time before that and ...."
And, you might next think, "Hey! I love her! She's just like me!"
And, you'd be right (unless you're the author of the aforementioned book that initially raised Danielle's ire, in which case, I don't even want to know you.)
Which is why you'll love this book and this author. She's so very real. I want her to live next door to me and come over for lots and lots of coffee while we ignore our children and catch up with each other. Because once in awhile, that's what real mothers do.
What's in this book? Let me start by telling you what's not in it.
Danielle Bean will not advise you to rise every morning at four a.m. in order to squeeze in that bit of extra prayer time that you need (but, she does have excellent advice on prayer and lovely prayers at the end of each section.) She will not try to convince you that you can whip up gourmet meals six nights out of seven without breaking a sweat (but, she does know how meal planning can keep you sane.) She will not tell you how to create the perfect craft, such as carving bath toys out of soap, thus saving money and mess (but she will offer twelve months' worth of real ideas for observing the liturgical calendar with your kids.)
In other words, what Danielle Bean will give you is a bunch of truths. Truths about how the little things can pile up and make even the best of moms yell at little people (but she'll remind you that you're not alone) ; about how marriage takes work (but is still the best thing we humans have got going) ; about how boring it can sometimes be to stay home (and yet how ultimately fulfilling and holy it is.) She will talk to you, as if you were having lots and lots of coffee together, about how to get the upper hand on the housework, how to live your faith with your kids, and about how prayer time really works at her house.
Because this is what Danielle Bean is about: striving for the very-real sacred in the midst of the very-real everyday. It's all connected: the yelling, the commitment, the smelly socks, the prayers, the boredom, the faith, the toilet-scrubbing, the journey to heaven. We moms don't get to travel a pristine path to holiness. Ours is peppered with dirty diapers, cranky kids, blown fuses and fishsticks. It's a path that evokes an "Eeewww!" from many. It's not pretty. And yet, it is the most exquisitely beautiful thing in the world.
Danielle Bean has seen that paradox, as genuine and strange as The Event it mirrors. Motherhood is a kind of crucifixion, a dying to self. From suffering and death come Resurrection. And from the struggles of motherhood joy, beauty and new life emerge.
That's what Danielle Bean knows, and it's what she'll tell you in this book: That it's hard. That there are ideas that will help you. Here they are. Take them and use them. And, along the way, let your vocation transform you.
This isn't "advice." This is friendship of the very best sort. Because that's what moms do. Mom to mom, we take care of each other.
Let this book take care of you for awhile.
Not Always Catholic - More on General MotherhoodReview Date: 2008-07-13
I was looking for ways to bring the Catholic faith into our home, how to be a better Catholic mother and wife - with the emphasis on "Catholic."
I was disappointed that much of this book is just sensible, non-denominational advice even secular mothers could benefit from. Not that the advice, stories and reflections weren't good, but they weren't always centered around being Catholic. Most often they were centered around Motherhood as a whole.
If you want a book written by a wonderful Catholic mom about the general challenges of parenting and being a good wife, this is a great book. But if you are looking for something more, well, religious in nature, as I was, this may not be the right choice for you.

My Review of a Great BookReview Date: 2006-02-23
"Stepping Out of the Bubble : Reflections On the Pilgrimage of Counseling Therapy by James P. Krehbiel is an amazing and outstanding book that provides help and direction to the many people that are suffering from problems described in this book.
I was amazed at how many of the problems and challenges, that the author writes about, are problems and challenges I have seen many people suffer with.
The counseling theory and practice information in this book provides a direction for people that have a problem and are willing to go to counseling and risk moving forward in their journey toward finding personal growth and development, and eventually stepping out of the bubble.
Many people have problems and challenges that they never seek help for and they and their loved ones continue to suffer. This book goes a long way in bringing the thought of counseling to people and helping people to better understand the counseling process.
To author James P. Krehbiel thank you for writing your great book. I am convinced your book will help many people and because of your book many more people will step out of the bubble. I recommend this book very highly and also feel it would be a great college text.

A practical resource for better livingReview Date: 2006-03-26
The "bubble" represents our security and comfort zone, but it is also the inner place where we store the pain of our past experiences and the unpleasant reality of that not being made conscious which keeps us bound in unhealthy and self-defeating patterns. Staying within this bubble limits our emotional responsiveness as we numb ourselves to the coexistence even as unresolved issues unconsciously filter forth. To step outside of the bubble is to courageously examine the contents in all honesty and to face life's reality outside of the bubble. Once outside the bubble, one can move forward to experience life in more emotional depth, fullness and passion. "Being a fully functioning individual is about being true to whom you are and letting things be the way they are," explains author, James Krehbiel.
With brilliant and compassionate understanding, Mr. Krehbiel briefly details methods used and pertinent case examples within his therapy practice. "Self-regulation is a goal of therapy. I educate people in the fact that all the answers are ultimately within." "Stepping Out Of The Bubble" strives to do the same, by giving information on how we become trapped in the bubble and how beneficial the making of conscious choices to leave, can be.
Some of the many topics included within this book are: being assertive, characteristics of an "authentic" person, the integration of each of our different personality parts, the difference between true guilt and false guilt, setting boundaries, addictions and addictions to "manic" relationships, awareness (staying in the moment or mindfulness), grounding, honoring one's inner voice, panic attacks, OCD and mood disorders. The section regarding kids and parenting was exceptional, in my opinion, and I found many points about discipline that made much sense. Also appreciated was the section relating to religion (dogma) versus faith (spiritual) as well as what needed to be said about pop culture.
I enjoyed reading "Stepping Out Of The Bubble" and would recommend it to anyone. It is enriching and inspirational.
Gaining Courage to Live Outside of the BubbleReview Date: 2006-02-24
His chapter which includes ideas on multidimensional thinking is appropriate in today's political climate. He indicates that true dialogue takes into consideration the appreciation for differences in opinions. He makes some profound statements about pop culture's affect on the lives of today's children. He also gives parents tools and resources for assisting their children in bettering their behavior. The book ends with a resounding "yes" to life with a hopeful, powerful way of perceiving and reframing life's problems. This was an excellent book!

Very Inspirational..Heart-warming..Loving..Review Date: 2006-02-28
After reading this book I will never be the same. About two years ago, I begin to have depressing thoughts. I would try to block them out, but I soon begin to notice that almost anything I perceived as negative would trigger them.
I was in an abusive relationship that left me with low self-esteem. I had heard of depression, but never in a million years thought I would experience it. My family has no history of mental illness.
To make a long story short. I credit this book with giving me a new outlook on life. As I read some of the passages, I felt as if you were talkign directly to me. There is such a negative stigma attached to depression in this country that I was really afraid to get help. I was wondering what others would say about me..
Reading your powerful story gave me the courage to get help. I am in therapy now, and for once in my life I feel optimistic about my future. I thought noone understood what I was going thru, and then I got a copy of your book. Finally, an easy to read book that is written by an everyday person (like me) who's sole desire is to change one person's life by sharing your powerful personal story of overcoming depression.
It is with tears in my eyes that I write this review and say THANK YOU!THANK YOU! THANK YOU! Everyone needs to read this book-really they do..

The design of the book shows you, in example format, real life scenarios and encourages study within a self-paced atmosphere. Because of its design, many people can come together and use the group study portion of the book, which allows for discussions and other interaction. The examples are clear and in step-by-step format. It even shows you how to write letters and word them to be more effective.
I highly recommend this book to any and all missionaries interested in gathering financial or prayer support. Fund and support raising is not something I was excited about until after I finished this book. I was so pleased with People Raising, I recommended it to several of my close missionary friends who are in need of financial support.

The Seven Secrets of Successful Divorce offers more than practical advice how to manage the different and usually painful situations and issues of the divorcing process. It is a book that helps you to be your own therapist when confronting the pain and feelings of disappointment, frustration, unsuccess, bitterness and uncertainty. It helps you to look forward into the future and prevent getting stuck in details. Also it helps you to observe and take different aspects into consideration, aspects that you would easily miss in the midst of your crisis.
