This book has helped us so much.
The doctors don't help you too much so you are left with a million questions and this book has helped so much.
This disease is so overwelming and this book is so helpful in easy to understand words.
Instead of going into a panic when something happens we now just go to the book and it calms us right down.
Thank God this book is here.

We were given the previous edition of this book in the hospital when our son was initially diagnosed with Type I diabetes. It was referenced in every appointment and class following that. When the new edition came out, we knew we needed it to have current information at our fingertips. It is easy to read and reference - you do not need to be in the medical field to understand it - you simply need to know someone with diabetes that you want to help!

We were given a copy of this book when my son was first diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes five years ago. The information in this book has literally saved his life ... not to mention my sanity! It is well organized and you don't have to read it all at once, which is especially important for newly diagnosed kids and their overwhelmed parents. The sick day information proved invaluable ...

A must-have for all people and families with type 1 diabetes. Each edition is ahead of the game with information about all the new and upcoming types of treatment options (insulin, continuous glucose monitors, insulin pumps, etc.) I have bought every edition since I was diagnosed with diabetes 15 years ago and will continue to buy all future editions.

A must-have for anyone with Type I diabetes in their life!

A clear and well-organized manual for understanding and managing Type I diabetes. Covering virtually every aspect of diabetes care, Understanding Diabetes is practically a crash course in a single book. The book is easy to read and full of excellent illustrations and helpful equations and tables. Also a great resource for discussions with your diabetes care team.

The average doctor does not offer the full help that a diabetic really needs. So you sit out on this log ready to fall if you do not seek further. Not only do doctor's not help they often don't even bother to give you a direction. I do not think any one book is an answer either, but cetainly the American Diabetic Association has an obligation to fill that large hole left by the medical profession. Go for it.

Prof. Kinga Howorka, MD studied under Dr. Viktor Frankl (Man's Search for Meaning) and was his doctor in his twilight year. This book liberated our young son Tyler Hill's life. His most recent medical report stated 'extremely excellent' diabetes control. What mattered to us most, is that Tyler could live an extremely excellent life without limitations.

Excellent and interesting book on an innovative therapy

The book introduces and explains the "FIT" therapy developed by the author, Prof. Kinga Howorka, for allowing insulin dependent patients of type 1 and type 2 to conduct an almost normal life with no prescheduled, firm intake of meals and blood sugar related diet.

This is a proven, yet very unknown therapy which empowers persons with diabetes to react on the measurements of blood glucose by correcting them and to adjust the insulin dosis they need for basal (fasting, long-acting insulin), prandial (eating, short acting insulin) and correcting needs (short acting insulin).

Being a person with diabetes myself and having experienced and witnessed the incredible increase in the quality of life with FIT as described in this book, I would urge anyone with insulin dependent diabetes to study this book. The book is suitable for patients and professionals alike.

A Great Find

Review Date: 2002-03-09
This is one of the most compehensive books about Insulin Dependent Diabetes I have found. Initially I was concerned that since the book was from a specific Diabetes Treatment Program/Center it would conflict with the information our doctors are giving us and instead of relieve some stress it would just create more confusion but this has not been the case. I have found it to be a informative addition to my growing collection of diabetes books. Possibly the best thing about it is that it is easy to read--so easy that I have decided to order several more and give them to our relatives in an effort to educate them about Insulin Dependent Diabetes. Also, sprinkled throughout the book are Q & A's that address everyday real concerns not just theories. I think this is one of the first book to read when someone close to you is dealing with a recent diagnosis of Insulin Dependent Diabetes. Give it a try.

The "Pink Panther" book was given to us at the Hospital. Dr. Chase gives the most comprehensive collection of Type 1 Diabetes information of all the books I've read on the subject. A few parts of it seemed like "homework", but it was never too technical for me. I hardly go a day of taking care of my 4 year old son who has diabetes without referring back to this book.

A great book for medical and non-medical readers
Helpful Votes: 9 out of 10 total.
Review Date: 2004-03-08
This book describes the transformation of diabetes from a rapidly-fatal illness to a chronic one with a host of new associated problems. Though written by a physician, the book focuses on this transformation from patients' perspectives. In addition, it emphasizes the impact of diabetes on not just the health of individuals but also on their day-to-day lives.

The highlight of this book is the collection of stories of individual patients and families. Drawing from letters and other patient records at the Joslin Diabetes Center in Boston, Feudtner vividly details the lives of diabetic patients in the 20th century. Of particular interest is a patient who corresponds with his physicians using self-drawn cartoons, a number of which are included in the book.

While this book will be of special interest to diabetic patients and physicians, I recommend it to any reader intersted in the interplay between modern medicine and the people it aims to serve.

It seems to be helpful to both diabetes patients and physicians. But I think it is more helpful in doctors or medicine school students who want to know how to take care diabetes patients exactly.

P.S. This 5th edition book doesn't include any media product(such as CD, DVD) of its contents.
