I happen to be a brand new graduate student of one of the people who furnished a chapter for this book, Steven de Belle. Because of that I have to confess that I am a little biased. However, I have used this book almost as a bible for my research. It is well written and organized in a convenient manner. If you are currently involved in olfaction research or want to get started I highly recommend this book. It is still very current information and I have found no errors so far. Thanks for your time.

In the Metcalfian style, established in preceeding texts by a preceeding Metcalf; Destructive and Useful Insects by Metcalf and Flint (early 60's), this textbook was, I believe, intended for agricultural entomology students and should serve very well for such purpose.

I bought the paperback version of this book at a meeting for 36 $US. It has two great merits: the balance of breadth and depth in coverage is right, and the price is right. Since the table of contents is posted on this site, the reader can judge relevance for his or her self. In my view this book is a great aid getting started in a project in applied insect physiological or population ecology. It also is very useful in making the most of your trips to a research library if the nearest one happens to be 2 or 3 hours from you.

The new pesticide

Over the past 40 years, world population, the use of modernized farming methods, and farming production have gone up. Modernized farming uses hazardous pesticides. But does it have to? Where are pesticides used? Are there alternatives? And what can be done to replace pesticides with alternative controls?

More than 800 different pesticides are regularly used throughout the world. They're used to protect crop yields from diseases and pests. Just under 4/5 of all pesticides are used outside the United States. The developing countries are the part of the world where companies plan to hugely increase pesticide sales and use.

But pesticides are damaging to the environment. They're not just hazardous to people who make and use them. Scientists keep on studying the effects of pesticides on animals, birds, bugs, other green things, people, places and water. But the chain of cause and effect isn't always easy to prove, show and tell. That's particularly the case when the audience is people making money from pesticide sales and use!

Editor Jules Pretty says alternatives can replace pesticides. Alternatives can be based on bacteria, certain nematodes, fungi or viruses. They can include parasitoids and predators. When tested with 80 crop combinations, alternatives came up with workable results. Crop yields went up acceptably, with cut-back pesticide use and with alternatives.

Pretty says that what's needed are political will, consumer awareness, and market response. But what can change national policies, international conventions, and programs? Pretty says to start on the level of appropriate taxing, education and environmental action. Specifically, for example, taking away subsidies and putting in effect high taxes would make pesticides less affordable. The list of registered pesticides could be reviewed. The most toxic pesticides could be taken off. Less hazardous alternatives could be added. Also, cooperative extension schools could be set up in the field. Agricultural colleges could have their courseload updated to cover alternatives as well as they're already covering pesticides! All three steps would make alternatives better known. Maximum residue limits could be set, checked and enforced. That would cut down the use of pesticides and increase the use of alternatives.

THE PESTICIDE DETOX is a well-organized and -written book. The editor and the contributing writers include helpful charts, examples, graphs and illustrations. There's a good index and set of references. The subject is now. It's dealt with in such a way that the problems are clear. And there are actually workable solutions! What more could a girl ask?

I'm a graduate student working on plant parasitic nematodes, and this textbook is an excellent reference for nematology. It offers detailed coverage about the main plant parasitic nematode genera, useful information about nematode anatomy, and contains recent molecular information. Highly recommended for anyone wishing to purchase a solid nematology reference book.

THis book caught me off guard. I loved the other two I'd read ("Swindled!" and "Nabbed!"), but since they were set in the early 1900s I guess I just didn't expect for the series to jump ahead to 1969. But what a welcome surprise! It's really cool to read about the 60s (and things like DDT and the early environmental movement) within the context of a fun, surprising mystery. Bill Doyle's done it again. I can't wait for the one set in 2031!

An excellent book, and a wonderful resource
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2002-06-25
This wonderful book is rightly considered a classic among gardening books. Though it was originally published in 1903, it is still a marvelous resource for the modern gardener. The book starts out with gardening basics, such as soil preparation (the beginning of any garden), laying out the garden, seeds-beds, and planting. Then, the author begins her examination of the flowers that were popular in her time, covering annuals and perennials, and the moving into biennials, roses, lilies, and bulbs. At the end, she turns back to the practical, with a discussion about water for the garden, walkways and other decorations, and finally insecticides (OK, this is rather out-of-date) and tools. The conclusion is also worth reading, containing Ms. Ely's thoughts and several interesting garden diagrams.

This is an excellent book, and a wonderful resource. It puts so much knowledge together is a readable and interesting format. I highly recommend this book to you. [As a companion to this book, please let me recommend An Island Garden by Celia Thaxter.]

This is a fantastic book of all you ever wanted to know about weeds! I am sure that the editorial information already written tells you far more about the specs of the book than I would ever wish to type. Weeds are so diverse, and there is so much to know---what exactly IS a weed? This book is fantastic for its huge amount of important minutae and its vast amount of time devoted to research. Fascinating, so fascinating. There is so much important info here on all kinds of plants.
