As a provider of Active Release Techniques, I found this book very valuable. It helps to remind providers how medical doctors will most likely treat these common conditions. I have been giving the recommended stretches to patients with great results. I continue to be amazed at how Active Release Techniques often provides instant results and sometimes instant resolution of conditions that patients have experienced for years. From a provider's perspective, it makes practice a lot of fun!

If you're interested in ART as a treatment- this is a wonderful resource. But, much more than that- it's a great resource for you to understand the cause of the problems. Also, any rehab exercises that you can do to prevent the problems.

i'm very much into "DIY physical therapy, ie: myofacsial release, trigger point therapy etc and thought that this book would be good to add to my arsenal, but all this seemed to be is a book that instructs you to go and find a ART practitioner, not how to do any of it yourself.I understand that some things should only be done by trained professionals, but the books premise is misleading.

I thought from the title of this book that it would be like a synopsis of how to do the ART technique. Instead, most of it was info about how wonderful ART is with some useful information about injuries in general. It does inform about specific anatomy but I didn't really need that part, although it was nice. I just wanted to know how to use the techniques, and I was a bit disappointed.

I'm returning this book as this is more like a brochure advertising this special 'patented' technique. I understand you can't learn this type of thing from a book but still i would like to see the actual techniques in there. Its just advertising for this special 'patented' technique which i'm not going to waste anymore money on.

A humorous and informative collection of essays by a syndicated columnist, with the assistance of a talented cartoonist, Robert Mankoff, that addresses some of the most common, disturbing and intractable problems folks, at any level, face in the day-to-day workplace. From being assaulted from above to battered from below to surviving layoff or dismissal, this entertaining book gives down-to-earth advice. The theme is that solutions to your workplace problems need to be devised by you. Liberally peppered with cartoons, quips, brief stories and quotes, this work provides a lot of to-the-point guidance. I bought the "Working Wounded" as a gift for the members of a team I once worked on. I felt that many of the situations that Bob Rosner brought to light measured up with how we dealt with our day. It went over quite well, and was entertaining as well as enlightening. I look forward to a second volume.

I read the book Working Wounded in a couple of days. It is actually a quick read and rather humorous at times. There is a lot of great reference material in there.

The author was really writing his own biography throughout most of the book. I am thrilled that he had such wonderful oportunities in the past and in his future.

This book is best just for the Bibliography. Unfortunately, it doesn't have one so you have to read it chapter by chapter to get the books that may be relevant to what you need additional information to.

Good Luck, Bob! To everyone else, buy a different book, see if someone will loan you theirs, go to the library. Save the dough, because I don't think you will find it as insightful as the title implies.

very dystopic with little concrete information
Helpful Votes: 10 out of 10 total.
Review Date: 2001-12-18
This is an amazingly dystopic book, absolutely full of horror stories and unhappy endings. There's a chapter on how to have a sex life despite RSI, how to sue for loss of a career, the testimonial of a man who was paralysed from the waist down but found RSI more disabling etc - but nothing concrete about what RSI actually. OK, so now I know that if I have tendonitis I'm more likely to get carpal tunnel syndrome and the rest of them but this book doesn't give me information on what tendonitis (or the others) actually is or how to make much of a change. There are quick mentions of various treatments but there is no discussion of their relative merits. The author tells us about her own exercise program (30-40 minutes a morning with weights and 1 1/2 hours of ballet four times a week plus walking and stretching) but there are no specific exercises that can help you avoid recurrance or assist in healing.

Please also notice that Deborah Quilter is not a medical professional but a health writer who has had RSI herself.

There is a good, explicit (but short) section on how to change your typing which I haven't seen other places.

Doomsday scenarios don't help you recover

Review Date: 2000-11-04
I read this book because I had severe RSI and wanted to recover. The first thing I read in it was that I had a chronic case and would never recover. This was followed by an avalanche of anecdotes about people who are radically crippled for life. These were intermingled with depressing advice about how to "handle" your newfound, chronic handicap. For example, Quilter says that people with RSI can still work any job, as long as they work at their own pace. So far, so good. Then she says most employers won't let you work at your own pace and goes on to suggest that you must change careers unless you want to do even more permanent damage to yourself. Great, just the kind of upbeat advice I needed to hear.

I suggest that unless you want to scare the pants off of someone who does not take their RSI seriously, you should get the original Pascarelli and Quilter book for overall information and the Damany and Bellis book for a concrete and helpful recovery plan.

Emil Pascarelli's book remains the primary work on RSI.

Ms. Quilter's book is good when it comes to advice on selecting a doctor and therapist, and also dealing with the guilt and depression associated with RSI. But I found it enormously lacking in not only the causes of RSI, but of what the specific injuries are and how you can recognize them. Emil Pascarelli's work, even though it is now five years old, remains the No. 1 source guide for anyone who has RSI.

good practical tips for living with an RSI

Review Date: 2005-07-05
I disagree with the reviews below, I thought this is a fine book, a good complement to the books "It's Not Carpal Tunnel Syndrome" by Damany and " Conquering Carpal Tunnel Syndrome and Other Repetitive Strain Injuries" by Sharon Butler. It's true the latter two have much more on specific exercises to help get you better and I liked the medical information in Damany. However they don't have a lot of practical information on how to cope with your life during the healing process when you can't do a lot of the things you normally do in your daily life. This book fills that gap. It's got lots of practical suggestions of how to do things when you're injured. It's more of broader focus than the other books on the overall changes you need to make beyond the specific exercise program. I would recommed someone with an RSI get all three books as the information is complementary.

Great, but one piece of important info omitted

Great book, except:

Like many authors of medical self-help books, Quilter urges her readers to enlist competent medical help. Unfortunately, she does not say that although one can find good, knowledgeable physical therapists, it is almost impossible to find an American medical doctor who knows anything about RSI. She does not mention that although it is an official diagnostic category in the UK, Australia and the Netherlands, neither RSI, nor any medical synonyms (i.e. overuse syndrome, cumulative trauma disorder, etc.) appear in American diagnostic guides (although other "controversial" syndromes like Fibromyalgia and Chronic Fatigue syndrome do!) So ... American doctors can not officially "know" about RSI. This also makes it difficult for RSIers to follow Quilter's most important recommendations -- rest and pacing, since we often need medical justification (at least a doctor's note) to get appropriate accomodations at work.

Quick Understanding of SI for Christians
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2007-12-14
This is a very brief book on Self Injury, the title a little misleading regarding pain feeling good. That part misses the point. The book does say there are many reasons why someone would choose SI as a coping mechanism. The book promotes compassion and alternative messages for Self-Injury (SI)such as : encouraging self-love, Christ-like love and utilyzing scripture for direct communication between self and God, rather than self-inflicted violence. This book is a good intro book for persons of faith who struggle with this issue; and this book can be a good book for other persons of faith who may be in a supportive role, helping friends or loved ones who struggle with SI. More needs to be written from a Christian, compassionate perspective that is more in depth. Robin Connors books and Walsh's new book on Treating Self Injury are much more thorough and better, tho without the religious perspective.

I found this book to be a very helpful overview of the topic. Obviously, any major problem that needs counseling is also going to need a thorough amount of research also, and this provides a very basic manual to the causes and some helps for self-injurers.

Unhelpful Booklet That Oversimplifies How We Heal
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2007-12-30
As the very first Christian resource on self-injury, this booklet accomplished a lot: it brought the issue to light for Christians. As the first resource that could've set the standard and as a potential tool for healing, this booklet falls drastically short. The author writes from a biblical-counseling perspective (the perspective that thinks all the answers to all life's problems can be directly found within the pages of the Bible) and ignores decades, if not centuries, of psychological research.

While the booklet accurately assesses the reasons WHY people give for wanting to self-injure, it reduces their reasons to one: it's all about God. On some level, that may be true, but many things point directly to things in our past. Once we recognize what causes us to act in certain ways, only then can we begin utilizing God's help to overcome our faulty behaviors. And this help can come in many forms: Bible reading, medication, prayer, counseling, talking with family and friends, etc. Prayer and Bible reading are not, as the author suggests, the ONLY answer; they are a PART of the answer.

For a better introductory booklet, read "Cutting: Self-Injury and Emotional Pain" (InterVarsity Press). For full-length Christian treatments of the issue, read Jerusha Clark's "Inside a Cutter's Mind," Jan Kern's "Scars That Wound, Scars That Heal," or Marv Penner's upcoming "Hope and Healing for Kids Who Cut."

Not helpful - Non-evidenced based Christian speculation

Review Date: 2007-09-06
While I have no idea of the intentions of the author, I can imagine that in the wrong context, this book could be very unhelpful for both parents and/or teens dealing with self injury issues. This a very brief (28 p) and superficial overview of this issue from a decidedly Christian perspective which ultimately associates sinful behavior of self-injury as being associated with the devil. I find such insuations to be unhelpful.

Diagnosis and Injection Techniques in Orthopedic Medicine

Unique and indispensable for physicians in many specialties
Helpful Votes: 11 out of 12 total.
Review Date: 2000-07-05
"Oh, not another back!" is a frequent lament by physicians, whether a generalist or specialist. In medical school, physicians learn very little about conditions that might be classified as "mechanical diseases," except for fractures, dislocations, and other conditions treatable by immobilization or surgery. Most diagnosis is perfunctory and imprecise (such as "low back strain" or "sprained wrist"), and the treatment armamentarium is limited to non-steroidal anti-inflammatories, exercises that are unhelpful if not actually harmful, "muscle relaxants," or other anodyne intended to get the patient out of the office, preferably with a referral slip.

This book is indispensable to physicians who would actually like to help the 15% of their patients with an ailment in the neglected province of orthopedic medicine. It is based on meticulous work in the dissecting room, prolonged study with pioneers in the field, and extensive clinical experience and research.

The book begins with diagnostic and treatment principles and a discussion of morbid anatomy. I found it to be a remedial education, filling in great gaps in my basic knowledge and challenging widely held beliefs on the basis of compelling logic. Specific soft-tissue injuries are discussed by region: the neck, the back, the thoracic spine, the shoulder, the elbow, the wrist, the hand, the hip, the knee, the ankle, and the foot. There are lucid descriptions of basic physical examination techniques, most of which are omitted or poorly described in standard textbooks. (I relied upon it extensively for the second edition of Sapira's Art and Science of Bedside Diagnosis.) Excellent radiographs and line drawings complement the clear and well-organized explanations. There is a wealth of reference material.

Most physicians will need to read this book with an anatomy text close at hand, at least if they were trained after the great curricular upheavals. A good neurology book is also helpful.

Dorman calls orthopedic medicine the "Cinderella of medical specialties." Though the foundation for the specialty was laid in 1929 by James Cyriax at the St. Thomas Hospital in London, scores of clinical entities that respond to orthopedic medical procedures remain unrecognized and untreated. Neglect of these vexing ailments by "mainstream" physicians probably accounts for the great popularity of chiropractic as well as many lay practitioners who provide some form of manual medicine.

This book opened a whole new world of medicine to me. The discussions of referred pain and tenderness, the elucidation of the role of the sacrum and the sacro-iliac joint, the technique of examination by resisted movements (especially in the shoulder), and the explanation of the mechanism for the varied presentations of whiplash are more than worth the price of the book. Even those physicians who do not aspire to master the more difficult treatments for the neck or the back can learn how to benefit patients with common problems involving the shoulder and other peripheral joints and ligaments. At the very least, the book can help to save patients from the harm of misguided treatment or the misdiagnosis of malingering in those with genuine injury.

General practitioners, general internists, physiatrists, and orthopedists -- or anyone who treats "musculoskeletal" conditions -- should own this book. Patients who aren't being helped by today's standard treatment might want to take a look at it also. They might help to lead physicians to what I believe will (or should) become standard treatment in the future.

The first thing I noticed when I opened the Amazon package was that the book looked as if it had been photocopied and bound at Kinko's, which is unusual given the price of it... This makes some of the radiographic figures hard to make out. Next thing you notice is that it's self-published (apparently after a publishing house discontinued it, the copyrights reverted to author). Given that, the content is not bad except for some lengthy discussions using such pretentious author-coined terms such as "tensegrity", and "assymlocation" (perhaps in a desperate attempt for posterity?). If you have to get one book on prolotherapy, you should get the one written by Hackett. It's more concise and written mainly by George S. Hackett (Hackett, George S., and Hemwall, Gustav A. and Montgomery, Gerald A., Ligament and Tendon Relaxation Treated By Prolotherapy, 5th Edition, 2nd printing, Oak Park, Illinois, 1993.), who discovered Prolotherapy, and who's treatment protocols remain the Gold standard for optimal results in the shortest amount of time.
Amazon sells the first half of this book (originally written 1958), I'm not exactly sure why they don't sell the the entire Hackett/Hemwall book from 1991. I got mine in a medical conference.

This ACSM study kit is jammed with information. There is not a page in the main book of more than 600 pages that does not contain valueable information. This edition has been re-released to take out all repeated information so it's important you take your time and learn the information as you cover each section or you will not understand what's going. I wish ACSM had a 8 & 12 week study planner like ACE to help you breakdown an appropriate amount of material per week. Since they don't its up to you to first browse through the book and then sit down and decide how much time you have each day to put into your studies. Many are the fitness certifications that you can scan the night before and still pass the exam with flying colors but unless you have a strong fitness background this will NOT be one of those exams. You MUST study for the ACSM. I love the Certification Review guide and I plan to begin with that first before proceeding to the text just to test my general knowledge and I'll go through the exam questions again before testing for the ACSM exam.

Please keep in mind the exam $249 and if you are like me and literally can't afford to fail, get your mind prepared to put in at least 1 hour of study time 5-7 days per week because to retest is an additional $150 or so.

And who is this author? Yesalis? A "professor of health policy, administration, exercise and sports science at Penn State"? And he has put together what? An "objective, in-depth collection of articles that examine anabolic-androgenic steroids, their effects, and long-term medical prognosis of use". Whoopee. Sorry, but men looking for Steroid information aren't looking for this type of "data". Men looking for real informaton, information that they can use on Steroids or AAS are going to be wasting their money with this book. If you feel you must read it then hope you find it in a library and not waste your money. If you want information that you can use and from a Bro that you can trust, then check out Anthony Roberts book called Anabolic Steroids: Ultimate Research Guide. And it does mean ULTIMATE. And it is something that you can use and trust being from someone who has Been There and Done That.

This is an academic book ,which will appeal to the serious researcher ,in the subject of anabolic steroids. Dr. Charles Yesalis offers the research findings and opinions of steroid advocates and detractors in an unbiased scientific document.
The book includes chapters on drug testing, analysis of performance, health implications and the legal aspects of steroid
possession and distribution ,as well as a comprehensive history of steroids.
The author reveals the controversy of the subject, by introducing the aspect of law enforcement of these controlled drugs, whilst quoting the American Medical Associations view that steroids should not be scheduled and that "...steroids can be used safely."
The author shows that several decades of steroid research ,by the medical authorities, often reveals a lack of understanding of steroid dosing ,as applied effectively, by top competing athletes.
This is a book to be recommended to the sports coach, researcher and above all, to the medical and health educating specialists whose inadequate understanding of anabolic steroids is often fostered by myth and anecdote.

I bought the first edition of this book when it was first published. Since then others have tried to duplicate.

The purpose is to be text on injury assessment. Most books on athletic training training had previously been all encopassing - trying to say everything. As info expanded, this book focussed just on what the title states. More realistic and geared for athletic trainers than other medical texts.

1st edition was a great review for those of us already inthe profession.

If you are a professor looking for a good text for an injury assessment class, keep looking!
