Hello kittyReview Date: 2004-04-10
In this lovely intergenerational tale, a boy accompanies his broken cat, his mother, his grandmother, and his aunt to the doctor's office. To comfort the cat, the boy asks his mom to recount how she once broke her own arm. The mom's story of getting "fixed" is paired with the cat's own tale of recovery. Perkins, author of the lovely "Snow Music" (big big recommendation on that one, people!), has penned a really nice story. The best of its kind, perhaps. There are a few books for kids that explain the process of breaking bodily parts and the fixing that follows, but I don't think many are as eloquent as this. Topping off the tale are Perkins' adept illustrations as well. Anyone who has seen a cat in pain will recognize how well the author/illustrator has captured this feline's tightly squeezed eyes and flat ears. At times the pictures slip into a kind of dreamscape. A page quartered into four views of the boy and cat in bed look out on stars, an evening meadow, a misty night, and sunny green field. Other times, there's a nice melding between the text and the pictures. I was especially taken with the title page, on which the portrait of the boy's mother as a girl, pets the cat held by the boy in an opposite portrait. It's a great story with likable characters and an interesting plot. And to top it all off, it serves a need. Simply great.

back of the book endorsementReview Date: 2007-09-27
The excellent writing style, the clarity, the humor and pathos, and the very practical issues presented make this a very valuable book. Interspersed are original verses (one of which, Living With Brain Injury, was published in NorthwestCaregiver newsletter).
I laughed and cried and relived my own caregiving experiences. Marie created a protective dome to shield her from hurt. In my case, I called it the "frozen face". I could feel when my patience was stretched almost to the breaking point and my face would stop showing emotion and become a stoic mask.
This would also be a valuable read for those who are uncertain how to help or relate to couples going through "chronic crisis" situations. Her reaction to "canned consolations" is eye opening. Positive suggestions are given for how friends can help instead of withdrawing.
This caregiver's personal life with its art expression, the warm closeness of being a couple with her husband, the freedom to do what and when she wishes, and the joy of just "being" and not constantly "on duty, on call" was lost. I believe that one who hasn't experienced this reality first hand can't really understand or relate to the full-time caregiver role. Living Marie's experience through her perceptions, thoughts, and insights so clearly expressed is an invaluable teaching aid which should be required reading for nursing students, social work students, and all practitioners in the healthcare field.
I highly recommend this book.

The similarities in our stories are the fall, complications as the body tries to survive, the outpouring of help in the beginning. The whole range of emotions from devastation to hope to Oh my God why me.
In all honesty I loved your book and yet there were times when I was scared of your book. Sometimes I needed to put it down for a few days, to give myself time to deal with the realization that my partner, although alive, may be lost to me forever. You hit the nail right on the head when you said, Progress is not always permanent. Your story made me laugh, cry, and hope for a better tomorrow.
I recommend your book--you have a wonderful way with words and it helps the rest of us to finally have the words to say what is going on inside. I want to most of all thank you for helping me heal by reading this book. From the bottom of my heart, I thank you for that the most.

You should also consider "Sexual Assault: The Medical-Legal Examination". This book has more information on the psychology of the assailant and the assailed, and on filling out legal forms during examination, but "Color Atlas" has more pictures.

A great book for a horse ownerReview Date: 2007-12-27
The book is organized by emergency and then details the situation, what you should be looking for, what different symptoms mean, what a Vet would do, what is important to the vet and then what you should do since you are not a vet. This is great because the focus is on full understanding and not making any mistakes that might make the situation worse and setting things up so when you do get to a vet (remember these are genuine emergencies) the vet will be best able to deal with it and have the best chance for a successful outcome. This includes things like the important information and proper terminology you are going to need to tell the vet on the phone. Things to look at and take note of before time passes or you start tending the problem so you can relate that to the vet as well.
The week I ordered this book our horse stepped on a nail and embedded it in his hoof. We didn't have the book yet so my wife and the folks at the barn where she stables her horse dealt with it as best they knew how. Luckily they did know the best way to handle things and everything turned out great.
They had a chance to have lots of interaction with the Vet about the incident and when the book arrived we looked at the section on stepping on something. Sure enough it was clear the book would have helped a good deal. It explained what our vet would have done and the vet had already confirmed the good and not so good that they had done as they dealt with it and it matched up exactly with what Dr. Hayes said in her book.
It make us feel a lot better that we will be able to deal with Emergencies properly should they occur. At least we will be able to deal with them in the very best way to help ensure a good outcome when we do get to the vet.
We found this book because Karen Hayes has a great horse medicine and horse keeping podcast on her personal website (http://www.integralhorse.com/). She gives great sensible advice on all aspects of horse keeping and horse health. After listening to a few dozen of those podcasts it became pretty clear she was a vet we could trust and buying her book was a no brianer. Listen for yourself and then see what I mean, I bet you will end up buying a few of her books. Even if you don't you probably can't help but learn a few things from her podcasts no matter how experienced you are.

mentioning this book to a friend has not made my reputation any better. i have had 4 people falsely accuse me of using steroids. what puzzles me is that my performance is no where near good. yet, i've been told that some bicyclists in our group are using steroids. i have never even considered using since i'm an amateur level at best.

Only "drawback" (may I use this word?) is that many of the supplements are so "new" in terms of scientific research that even this book being recent there may be drastic changes in the knowledge of the product. Make sure you do your own researches (the internet is a good point to start) on the "newer" stuff where this book may become incomplete or vague.

Get this book. It could change your life!Review Date: 2006-03-31
In his book, Ahror Rahmedov exposes his thoughts, feelings, and his soul in this thoughtfully-written and exciting true-life drama of the tragedy that struck his life. It is a roller-coaster ride up to a peak of excitement, down to the deepest despair, and then back up and beyond.
We are fortunate that Ahror has written the book in his own words. After reading, you will deeply understand who he is, and where he is coming from. You will know him better than we know most of our best friends.
And once you know him, you will understand the depth of his character - a shining light of strength and love who provides encouragement to each person he meets.
Read this book. Meet this great man through his words. He will lift your spirit, and through his own inspiring example, you may learn a better way to live your own life.

Aside from the personal ties, I find the book very easy to relate to, having a cat of my own who is rather prone to injuries. This is a great book for families to read together, as well as for someone to read on their own.
