I got this book a few years agoat a book signing in Traverse City. It is an excellent portrait of life in a family, with some wonderful illustrations. I especially liked the telling of some of the story from the viewpoint of "Andy", the young boy, who, as it happens, is modeled qute a bit after my close friend Frank Perkins, whom the cat is named after.
Aside from the personal ties, I find the book very easy to relate to, having a cat of my own who is rather prone to injuries. This is a great book for families to read together, as well as for someone to read on their own.

Another great kids' book from Lynne Perkins. My five-year-old daughter has taken to "The Broken Cat" to the extent that she has renamed one of our own cats "Frank" after the cat in the book, whose trip to the vet is the trigger for memories by his human owners of past injuries of their own.

This book quenched my children's curiosity about what happens if you "get a big boo-boo." My kids LOVE to hear "when Mama & Daddy were little" stories, especially if we were hurt (I think it makes us more human to them). This book does just that. We relive the story of how Mom remembers when she was late for school, fell, and broke her arm. She was scared, sad, embarrassed, "broken," and, we find out in the end, also loved, and eventually all better.

Funny thing. Though I think this is a great book and a really interesting way to introduce kids to notion of personal injuries, I also know for a fact that I could NOT have enjoyed this book as a child. Mind you, this is a strictly personal matter. I well remember another cat based picture book that worried me to no end as a child. If any of you have ever read "The Patchwork Cat", you'll know what I mean. I had a very hard time reading stories where cats were unhappy or in pain. In this particular book, a cat is being taken to the vet because he is acting as if he's hurting. The book doesn't dwell on this aspect and the cat is perfectly fine by the end of the tale, but it probably will disturb some of the more squeamish children out there.

In this lovely intergenerational tale, a boy accompanies his broken cat, his mother, his grandmother, and his aunt to the doctor's office. To comfort the cat, the boy asks his mom to recount how she once broke her own arm. The mom's story of getting "fixed" is paired with the cat's own tale of recovery. Perkins, author of the lovely "Snow Music" (big big recommendation on that one, people!), has penned a really nice story. The best of its kind, perhaps. There are a few books for kids that explain the process of breaking bodily parts and the fixing that follows, but I don't think many are as eloquent as this. Topping off the tale are Perkins' adept illustrations as well. Anyone who has seen a cat in pain will recognize how well the author/illustrator has captured this feline's tightly squeezed eyes and flat ears. At times the pictures slip into a kind of dreamscape. A page quartered into four views of the boy and cat in bed look out on stars, an evening meadow, a misty night, and sunny green field. Other times, there's a nice melding between the text and the pictures. I was especially taken with the title page, on which the portrait of the boy's mother as a girl, pets the cat held by the boy in an opposite portrait. It's a great story with likable characters and an interesting plot. And to top it all off, it serves a need. Simply great.

Caregivers Tale is a fascinating and terrifying account of how quickly and often life can go out of control once traumatic brain injury enters the picture. Marie Gass was meticulous in communicating with friends and family after her husband Don's injury. This and her own practice of writing out history as it happens allowed her to assemble an amazingly detailed account of what happened to her life when Don's recovery took it over. The story is well written and very personal. It will be a great help to anyone caring for a loved one under these circumstances.

I found it hard to put this book down. It's so well written that it just draws you right in. I think it would benefit anyone who's involved in care giving. It's told from the caregiver's point of view and you feel like you're there going through each crisis as it happens. It made me realize that a trauma changes not only the victim's life, but also the lives of the family. It made see things from a totally different perspective. The first part of the book concerns the accident and it's consequences. The author conveys a real sense of the couple's personalities. You come to know and care for them through the love and friendship they share. The second part of the book deals with the following years, and living with the results of the injury. The author has been caring for her husband for seven years. She's very honest about her frustration and feelings. I think it's most encouraging for other caregivers experiencing the same emotional roller coaster to know that they are not alone, and they are having normal reactions to extraordinary situations. Anyhow, I was so impressed I bought another copy to give to a friend of mine who's her Mother's caregiver, and have recommended this book to several others.

A "must read" for any caregiver. The detailed case study takes the reader inside the caregiver/spouse's head. Experience the confusion, the pathos, the exhaustion, the hopes and dashed hopes, and the tedium of a life completely changed by an unfortunate incident.

The excellent writing style, the clarity, the humor and pathos, and the very practical issues presented make this a very valuable book. Interspersed are original verses (one of which, Living With Brain Injury, was published in NorthwestCaregiver newsletter).

I laughed and cried and relived my own caregiving experiences. Marie created a protective dome to shield her from hurt. In my case, I called it the "frozen face". I could feel when my patience was stretched almost to the breaking point and my face would stop showing emotion and become a stoic mask.

This would also be a valuable read for those who are uncertain how to help or relate to couples going through "chronic crisis" situations. Her reaction to "canned consolations" is eye opening. Positive suggestions are given for how friends can help instead of withdrawing.

This caregiver's personal life with its art expression, the warm closeness of being a couple with her husband, the freedom to do what and when she wishes, and the joy of just "being" and not constantly "on duty, on call" was lost. I believe that one who hasn't experienced this reality first hand can't really understand or relate to the full-time caregiver role. Living Marie's experience through her perceptions, thoughts, and insights so clearly expressed is an invaluable teaching aid which should be required reading for nursing students, social work students, and all practitioners in the healthcare field.

I highly recommend this book.

I have fallen in love with your story! I find it hard not to pick up during the day, then I have a hard time putting it down. If I just say I'll read a paragraph more, next thing I have polished off 5 more pages and I'm late with something. I especially appreciate your sense of humor. I know in this crazy brain damaged world, it's important to not fall into the "poor us" abyss.

The similarities in our stories are the fall, complications as the body tries to survive, the outpouring of help in the beginning. The whole range of emotions from devastation to hope to Oh my God why me.

In all honesty I loved your book and yet there were times when I was scared of your book. Sometimes I needed to put it down for a few days, to give myself time to deal with the realization that my partner, although alive, may be lost to me forever. You hit the nail right on the head when you said, Progress is not always permanent. Your story made me laugh, cry, and hope for a better tomorrow.

I recommend your book--you have a wonderful way with words and it helps the rest of us to finally have the words to say what is going on inside. I want to most of all thank you for helping me heal by reading this book. From the bottom of my heart, I thank you for that the most.

I have been a patient of Dr. Rahn's for about a year. My carpal tunnel, misdiagnosed by another chiropractor, was almost at a point of no return.
Roger used his technique of massage and ultrasound and I'm almost 100%,
WITHOUT SURGERY!!! Knowing the physiology of thoracic outlet syndrome
helps understand why this method works. I encourage professionals learn
this technique.

As a patient of Dr. Rahn's, I was excited to review his book as I have experienced the remarkable results his techniques can bring. When I first began treatments almost 4 years ago, I had been diagnosed with bone on bone presentation and told by a medical doctor that I needed knee replacement for both knees. Thanks to regular deep tissue and chiropractic treatments, I am pain free and have regained enough strength and mobility to return to full time employment. Thankfully, I no longer take pain meds and am not even considering surgery.

Dr. Rahn has accomplished a lot for many patients, and his book makes it possible for even more to be helped with other practitioners using his revolutionary techniques. It is written so that both professionals and their patients can benefit and learn. Highly recommended!!

This book is totally aweseome! Not only does it give an indepth explanation of chiropractic adjustments, techniques, theories, and so on, but it also deals with the issue of "how to correct the problem". Today, there are so many chiropractors out there that spend about 2 minutes with you "snap, crackle, and pop", charge you $50.00 and throw you out the door...without ever fixing the problem! This book is incredible considering that it focuses on the treatments and how to get yourself better. THe section which talks about Carpel Tunnel is excellent, and if you, or someone you know has carpel tunnel, you need to buy this book. It will help you immensely! Carpel Tunnel is very serious, and it stops us from doing what we love...such as playing the guitar, typing, and just every day activities. This book tells us how to "correct" the problem and reverse the carpel tunnel.

This is a wonderful book for individuals who are examining patients who have been sexually assaulted. Shows normal anatomy and variations, including non-sexual injuries. As a Nurse Practitioner and a new Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner I find this book to be an excellent reference. It had been recommended to me by the educational coordinator of the SANE course I took.

My forensic nurse colleagues have provided an outstanding resource for those of us who perform sexual assault exams and forensic evidence collection. The photographic documentation of cases and information in the Color Atlas have proved invaluable to me as a sexual assault nurse examiner. Our district attorney also purchased the book as a reference. I applaud the five authors of this text for a job well done. They have produced a professional work, accurately and well written, with outstanding photodocumentation of sexual assault cases.

This book is very complete, and has many pictures describing a variety of situations. Highly recommended.

You should also consider "Sexual Assault: The Medical-Legal Examination". This book has more information on the psychology of the assailant and the assailed, and on filling out legal forms during examination, but "Color Atlas" has more pictures.

For any attorney who practices in the field of Plaintiff's Personal Injury, this book is an essential tool which you need to prepare for a jury trial. This is an excellent book. I bought 2 of them. Given all of the lies regarding anti-lawsuit bias which the insurance companies and conservative politicians use to attempt to bias our jury pools, this book gives thoughtful common sense advise on jury bias issues , case themes, picking a jury, and how to present the damage issues in your case. All personal injury trial lawyers need to know what's in this book.

David Ball is the guru on monetary damages, the only way of holding a negligent person accountable in our system. If you are only buying a few books for your practice library, this small volume should be at the top of your list. It is one of the best "how-to" books on trial work for plaintiffs' personal injury attorneys. Ball discusses a gamut of topics like juror motivations, handling comparative fault, settled parties, intangible damages, asking for a specific amount, how to decide on appropriate amounts, how to best present life care plans ... virtually every sticky issue that comes up in a personal injury trial. I highly recommend this terrific guide.

I have seen David talk at a number of ATLA conferences/colleges. He always has great advice. This is a slender volume that reviews why juries give money, why juries hold back money and the current 'tech' on how to increase damages. He has also included sample outlines for opnening statements, closing arguments, and how to structure the case. I've had it for about a year and every case I work up, I flip through and review the good qualities and danger aspects of the case. This is the most useful book I have in structuring a case and setting a discovery plan. Whenever I speak at seminars or conferences I always push this book. This book has helped me a lot

(His book on how to conduct focus groups yourself is great too! We routinely conduct our own focus groups for $300).

A great book for a horse owner
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2007-12-27
This book was very much what my wife and I were looking for. My wife has years of horse experience but that doesn't mean she knows exactly the very best practices to follow in every emergency.

The book is organized by emergency and then details the situation, what you should be looking for, what different symptoms mean, what a Vet would do, what is important to the vet and then what you should do since you are not a vet. This is great because the focus is on full understanding and not making any mistakes that might make the situation worse and setting things up so when you do get to a vet (remember these are genuine emergencies) the vet will be best able to deal with it and have the best chance for a successful outcome. This includes things like the important information and proper terminology you are going to need to tell the vet on the phone. Things to look at and take note of before time passes or you start tending the problem so you can relate that to the vet as well.

The week I ordered this book our horse stepped on a nail and embedded it in his hoof. We didn't have the book yet so my wife and the folks at the barn where she stables her horse dealt with it as best they knew how. Luckily they did know the best way to handle things and everything turned out great.

They had a chance to have lots of interaction with the Vet about the incident and when the book arrived we looked at the section on stepping on something. Sure enough it was clear the book would have helped a good deal. It explained what our vet would have done and the vet had already confirmed the good and not so good that they had done as they dealt with it and it matched up exactly with what Dr. Hayes said in her book.

It make us feel a lot better that we will be able to deal with Emergencies properly should they occur. At least we will be able to deal with them in the very best way to help ensure a good outcome when we do get to the vet.

We found this book because Karen Hayes has a great horse medicine and horse keeping podcast on her personal website (http://www.integralhorse.com/). She gives great sensible advice on all aspects of horse keeping and horse health. After listening to a few dozen of those podcasts it became pretty clear she was a vet we could trust and buying her book was a no brianer. Listen for yourself and then see what I mean, I bet you will end up buying a few of her books. Even if you don't you probably can't help but learn a few things from her podcasts no matter how experienced you are.

Most useful first aid for horses

What makes this book unique is the step by step walk-through of some typical horse emergency scenarios. And if you're around horses long enough sooner or later you'll be faced with a horse emergency--since horses usually live much further from their vets than city-dwelling pets, it's good if their handlers are well-prepared. It's a very readable format--I'd suggest reading it thoroughly ahead of time, get the recommended veterinary items together, and then get the book out again once or twice a year to keep fresh. Think of it as a course in first aid for your horse.

I have quite a few "Horse" books. Many of them are medical references but give very little practical advice. This is the one book that gives practical, concise information on what to do specifically in emergencies. It is thoughtful and easily read. It is the best book I have ever read for actually useful information concerning medical problems with horses. It walks a great line between making sure that you understand that vets are still required, but that if you are somewhere you can't get to a vet, what to do. The author has a wonderful sense of humor and a no-nonsense approach. I highly recommend it to any horse owner. Keep this book in your trailer at all times!!

i really enjoyed reading this book. i was surprised that it not only covers all the legal aids. but it also covers the history of illegal drugs. i orginally bought this book for knowledge on diet and legal aids. but i ended up with a brief history of illegal drugs.

mentioning this book to a friend has not made my reputation any better. i have had 4 people falsely accuse me of using steroids. what puzzles me is that my performance is no where near good. yet, i've been told that some bicyclists in our group are using steroids. i have never even considered using since i'm an amateur level at best.

This book is a really nice book to help us all get most of the "misterious" ergogenics. How many times did we enter in a SNC/GNC store and got confused with so many options? What does creatin or anything else exactly does? Stop having false and biased advises. This book is a reliable database with good bibliographic references. First starting point before heading to any supplement store is to get your hands on this book. Guaranteed to help you spend your $$$ better there!

Only "drawback" (may I use this word?) is that many of the supplements are so "new" in terms of scientific research that even this book being recent there may be drastic changes in the knowledge of the product. Make sure you do your own researches (the internet is a good point to start) on the "newer" stuff where this book may become incomplete or vague.

Many people are buying those products without knowing their effectiveness or safety. This book can serve as excellent source to help athletes and coaches of all levels to get the necessary information that will help them make informed decisions regarding the use of sports ergogenics as a means to enhance performance in sport. This book discusses the effectiveness, safety concerns, legal status, and ethical issues of a specific sport ergogenic that should be considered by all the athletes prior to its use. Athletes can find excelent recommendations about what spplements to take or not to take depending of the sport they are participating. If you consider Auerbach's Wilderness Medicine text to be "The Bible of Outdoor Medicine," then this will be a welcomed addition to your reference library. The fieldguide takes many of the most important topics from the original text(such as high altitude emergencies, envenomations, and trauma management) and paraphrases them just enough to be of benefit to both the weekend outdoor warrior and the expedition medic. I particularly was interested in the various ways to utilize common outdoor gear and improvise traction devices for orthopedic injuries. This book is also great in that it is small enough to fit comfortably in your backpack or glove compartment, readily accessable when needed. I highly recommend adding this book to your home or office library.

This is an excellent condensed version of the full text. It is the only medical field guide I have found that is written for a medical doctor instead of an EMT or paramedic in an austere environment. I am a physician in a military special operations unit and carry it on all deployments, whether in the U.S. or other countries. It is the perfect size to carry with my field gear and trauma pack, and is quick, easy to use, and reccommends very up to date and rapid treatment plans. I'm going to buy this book for friends and family for Christmas. I couldn't put it down, and stayed up way too late on work nights because of it. I don't have words to explain how this book affected me.

You wake up in pain and darkness, wondering what happened. Slowly reality sets in. And you discover that your body, your life, and your dreams have been shattered.

In his book, Ahror Rahmedov exposes his thoughts, feelings, and his soul in this thoughtfully-written and exciting true-life drama of the tragedy that struck his life. It is a roller-coaster ride up to a peak of excitement, down to the deepest despair, and then back up and beyond.

We are fortunate that Ahror has written the book in his own words. After reading, you will deeply understand who he is, and where he is coming from. You will know him better than we know most of our best friends.

And once you know him, you will understand the depth of his character - a shining light of strength and love who provides encouragement to each person he meets.

The author provided a wonderful, heart-moving journey for the reader. His ability to provide a clear and emotional dictation provides an easy to follow story for any reader. His culture and personality shine through in his words. I thoroughly enjoyed reading and understanding this young man's trials. He is a light in a world sometimes filled with darkness.

Dr. Hammer is a great writer. He doesn't ignore the subluxation complex as in some texts supposenly related to chiropractic. Dr. Hammer shows how soft tissue injury is related to the subluxation. When I took the national boards of chiropractic, I used this book as one of my references for Part II section--Chiropractic Practice, and also for Part III. Little advice for taking the boards, get Souza's book, Differential Diagnosis for the Chiropractor. Also, Patrick Leonardi's study guides, National Board of Chiropractic Part II Study Guide: Key Review Questions and Answers, National Board of Chiropractic Part III Study Guide: Key Review Questions and Answers with Explanations
These study guides have questions that were excellent because they were the kind encountered on the exams. Also souza's book was very helpful for chiropractic practice and Part III. Dr. Warren's book was also on the mark for Chiropractic Practice section of part II.

INCREDIBLE BOOK!

Dr. Hammer has done a marvelous job in describing and picturing the soft tissue component of the subluxation complex. As a Chiropractor, this book has been invaluable to me AND the patients who have benefitted from the knowledge I have gained from Dr. Hammer. THANK YOU, DR. HAMMER!

As an athletic trainer at a large high school in Pennsylvania, I found this book very helpful in every day treatment of various ailments my athletes complained of. Although the process can be complex, the soft tissue treatments are very helpful and this book I have found to be a very valuable asset.
