Kirby Farrell narrates this book like a pop-culture icon, yet he remains objective enough to sustain credibility. Heavily influenced by the works of Ernest Becker, Farrell compares seemingly uncomaprable films and novels through a filter of humanities' fears of death and desires for immortality. Farrell makes several strong arguments, yet gets caught up in a bit too many tangents for the general going public. This book is for a scholar. I know this sounds elitest, but this novel is for those who are well read, well versed, and comfortable dealing with topics that will make them feel uncomfortable because of their validity. Farrell has succeeded in created a fine piece of work worthy of coffee tables around the world...that is if you take your coffee black.

Internationally recognized research in the field of vision

Visual impairments influence all activities of daily living. Therefore, the examination of vision and the treatment of patients with visual deficits is of major importance, and the book by Josef Zihl closes a big gap in the series of handbooks about neuropsychological rehabilitation. In the last 30 years Prof. Josef Zihl conducted exciting and internationally recognized research in the field of brain damaged patients with visual defects. Many of his investigations were interesting single-case studies which have inspired other scientists to examine larger group of patients. The book summarizes many of his findings and compares them with the results of other researchers. On 186 pages, the author conveys detailed knowledge of the whole range of human visual functions as well as possible disturbances. The book starts with the description of visual field restrictions such as homonymous hemianopia, a frequent consequence of stroke of the posterior cerebral artery. Zihl then deals with disorders of visual acuity, color vision deficits, and impaired visual space perception. Chapter 6 is dedicated to visual agnosia, a very interesting topic in its own. The last part of the book is devoted to central scotoma, causing almost unbearable handicaps for patients. The author presents many helpful compensatory therapies for patients with visual deficits. For example, Zihl himself had developed an electronic reading aid, a saccadic eye movement training, and a computer-based tachistoscopic apparatus for text material. All of them proved their effectivity in several investigations and are helpful for many patients. Particularly for clinical neuropsychologists, these hints are helpful and valuable to decide which test is appropriate for the investigation of a given patient. I think that this book is of interest for both, scientists and clinical practitioners, and we would highly recommend it for anybody working in the field of brain-damaged patients with visual defects.

This book has helped me a lot with the rehabilitation aspect of Athletic Training, which is my major at school. Two of the grad assistance have it and loved it, so I decided to get the book! So far it has been the best move, I have learned new exercises to help with athlete's that I didn't know about prior to this book. The only downfall was I bought it used from someone whom claimed the book had "NO writing or Highlighting" inside and once I received the book it was filled with highlighting. If it doesn't bother you when other people have highlighted information that you might not want highlighted than go ahead and buy it used. If not than I really recommend buying it new, especially if you are in a physical therapy or sports medicine field.

A Manual

I bought this book after reading about it in a leading massage magazine. My interest in Carpal tunnel work is both professional and personal.
I wanted to learn a serious new approach rather than a window dressing, rehashing of work already out there.
Each step has photographs, line drawings of the muscle or nerve in question and written step by step directions on how to work each section.
There are many repetitive commands in the sections such as "the deeper you go, the slower you go"

.The print is easy to see from a working distance.
This is a "working manual" .

Although much has been learned since this book was published, the authors laid the groundwork for our understanding of the development of respiratory distress syndrome (RDS) following shock and trauma events. Well researched, and written in a style more comprehensible then most.
