Practical Information for the professional

I purchased this book to become part of a group of supporting materials for a presentation at a conference on recovery in fitness. The book is written on a college level as a text. The information is practical and supported by research. The recovery questionaire can be broken down into simpler parts to be diaried and easily answered daily by clients/athletes you might work with or for yourself while following a training schedule, and especially in preparation for a specific event, to prevent overtraining issues. The fifth star is missing because of the presentation of information in such an advanced and scientific way. The format is not for everyone, but the information in it is extremely helpful in many venues. I am sure the authors hope that it is selected by many fitness and athletic professionals to educate and train everyone from a proathlete to the four day a week fitness enthusiast to keep them safe and keep training effective through proper recovery and recovery practices.

recommended text for beginners..

This is an easy-to-follow introductory text on cardiopulmonary testing, with the author emphasizing throughout the text the importance of measuring work directly via gas-exchange under controlled conditions instead of estimating this from an external workload or in terms of "exercise time". Highlighted in the text are: VO2max uptake and its "plateau" concept has limitations for general exercise test application, and the fact that VO2max is only a modest predictor of endurance performance among athletes performing at elite level, contrary to the belief of even many an experienced exercise physiologist.

Key essentials in integrative cardiopulmonary testing are well presented. From physiological response of central and peripheral determinants on VO2max uptake (cardiac output and arterio-venous oxygen difference), factors affecting this response, to methodological considerations (which includes exercise mode, patient preparation, ECG lead systems and patient's effort) and instrument calibration and quality control. O2 kinetics and ventilatory parameters, in particular, ventilatory threshold (VT) or anaerobic threshold received special attention and given good coverage in chapter 4, so had the sampling methods of mixing chamber and breath-by-breath techniques. The author advised against the use of the term "anaerobic threshold" as it is argued that this threshold does not imply the onset of anaerobiosis. Therefore, it is not surprising that publications supporting the concept that lactate increase during exercise is tissue O2-dependent were not well reviewed. Though there is no consensus on this in the literature, readers are referred to the advanced text "Principles of Exercise Testing and Interpretation" (now into its third edition). This book, among others, offers many well-illustrated biochemical pathways and insightful case studies not available in Myer's text. Both texts include a comprehensive glossary of terms.

The inclusion of a brief overview at the beginning of the text on basic statistical concepts (standard error of estimate and regression equations) would have helped enhancing the reader's understanding of later chapter on "normal values". Beginners are warned against the indiscriminate use of population- and protocol-specific normograms in predicting VO2max. Though there is minor inaccuracy in the text, it is still highly recommended to beginners and experienced readers alike.

Surveying Head Injuries

It is a well done and well researched book. I was impressed by the command and thoroughness of the subject treatment. I would like to see more on microsurgical ameliorative therapies for head injury recovery, if available. Such treatment modalities are probably non existent at this point, at least in terms of "catalytics" for repair or regeneration. I will probably have to write the book myself, that I am really searching for. On the whole I recommend this book.

As a physical therapist and a specialist in Sports Medicine, I must admit that I did have some background knowledge in the management of athletic injuries before i read this book. But I realized, after skimming threw the pages of this wonderful manual, that I really didn't know that much after all !

As a brief manual that athletic trainers and coaches can carry in their pockets, this well compiled book focuses on several important aspects of sports nutrition.

Ranging from the importance of macronutrients like protiens to the micronutrients like vitamins and minerals, this guide equips medical and paramedical personnel, along with athletes and their families alike on the do's and dont's of sports nutrition in the event of injuries. Now that's something that few athletes stop to ponder !
