In a jam and need to deliver a baby? Witness to an accident and the person needs CPR? Or just worried about summer bee stings? This book is a must have for every parent's glove box, and another one in the bathroom or kitchen. The Everything First Aid Book is small enough to tote around and organized in such a way that you can easily find what you are looking for. Besides using it as a reference, it's actually an interesting read and written in a way that the information sticks (not a lot of going on about unnecessary details). In other words, it's really an emergency book and lives up to it's name.

As a Christian and the best friend of author Nadine Saubers RN who I know as the most loving, dependable, honest, charitable, and Christ like Christian I find the above reviewer disappointing and her hostility extremely UN-Christ-like. Nadine wrote a thorough and accurate book on first aid within the constraints of her publisher. If you are looking for a comprehensive up to date book on first aid this one is for you!

It might interest you to look at the other reviews written by the above reviewer.

Save your money, This so called RN, Nadine Saubers decided at the end of her book to slap all Christians in the face, with statements that do not belong in a book on first aid, I returned my copy for a refund ASAP, I would not give a dime to F&W Publications of Avon Ma. or everything series, When they decide to respect 85% of Americans and not slap them or have additions in the book with no relation to the subject, then one may take another look, but they will never get a dime from me period

Having read both Gari Carter's book and some of the reviews, an Eastern expression comes to mind, "there are many truths and many realities." Gari's book cannot be all things to all people, but for the reader capable of being inspired by one woman's courage and able to use this book as a source of inspiration and as a resource book, it is wonderful. Having initially read the book in 1996, I continue to use it on my own journey of healing and am grateful to the author for sharing her story.

Not A Well Written Book

Review Date: 2000-02-01
There are many people in need of books that help one deal with tragedies. However, even though the content of this book was interesting, it was not well-crafted and the author, G. Carter, spent too much time lambasting family members. These observations leave me with the impressions that (a) the book was never intended to be a "Hero's Primer," but rather served as a platform from which the author could take public revenge on portions of her family, and (b) this was the author's first book. People recovering from serious automobile accidents would be better served by spending their book money on medical expenses.

This is a very valuable book for anyone facing surgery.

This book is an account of a woman's dealing with a traumatic injury that required many surgeries to correct. It describes her overwhelming will to live, her depression because of facial changes and pain and how she fought to rebuild her life. The most important thing that she shares is her discovery and use of Robert Monroe's tapes to help relax before and during surgery and to control the pain after surgery. I have used his tapes myself and highly recommend them to anyone who is anticapating surgery.

The book is interesting, at times difficult to read because of the suffering you know the author is experiencing, but her fight to remain upbeat is a real inspiration.

I just finished reading this book and found it to be a valuable resource for my family and the boy scout troop I belong to. The
information on hiking shoes and foot care while hiking was very appropriate to a seasonal hiker like myself. As an adult leader in a boy scout troop, I decided to maintain a copy of the book in the troop library for scouts to refer to prior to camping trips. Thanks for this well written guide.

I found most of this text to be kind of a waste. I'm an interemediate experience hiker but there's nothing new in this "bare bones" basic book. Even if I was just getting into the sport, I would NOT have learned anything that VERY basic common sense couldn't already tell me. ...

I have found much more valuable information (and more accurate as well) on this same topic from more comprehensive sports medicine reference titles.

I'm an experienced hiker and still found the book useful and entertaining. I didn't learn anything new, but I will guarantee you that novice hikers would benefit immensely from this. What is basic common sense to seasoned hikers may not come naturally to those just lacing up their boots for the first time. The book focuses primarily on how to keep your feet in shape during long treks and addresses such things as proper socks, shoes and lcimbing techniques. I wish the author would have addressed cardiovascular fitness more; he does mention the extreme importance of aerobic exercise as preparation, but doesn't stress that facet enough. Anyone who hikes long miles needs to be mentally and physically fit before attempting the undertaking, Plotkin tends to gloss over this and move on to other things.

Essentially the book will have limited appeal to those who hike consistently throughout the year. But if you merely dabble in the sport, or have never hiked in your life, I would heartily recommend this book. It's well organzied, well written and will hold your interest.

A classic, provocative ideas

"The Joyless Economy" is a classic attempt to assess the postulates of neoclassical economics (the sort of economics taught in schools and universities!) in terms of evidence about human behaviour from Behavioural Psychology.

Definitely worth a read, particularly if you have reservations about the neoclassical orthodoxy!

From a technical economic viewpoint, he fails to make his case forcefully enough to convince orthodox economists on their own turf, but that is to take nothing away from the strength and worth of the ideas.

Euro-blah blah blah

Review Date: 2000-04-04
I read this in a comparative economics class at Hope College back when Jimmy Carter was President, and it was "in" to deride the U.S. as suffering from too much over-psychologized materialism, the cure for which was to read this book to see how much happier we would be if we switched paradigms to a slower paced, more natural, Euro-way of doing socialism, which would include more frequent trips to the market to buy bread without preservatives, taking fewer showers to conserve water, and waking up later, taking longer lunches, and staying up all night drinking cappucino with interesting people. In short, more like then-"third way" Yugoslavia. What happened to Yugoslavia, and who has subsequently had to go clean the place out, is a metaphor for how the preachings of this book have turned out to fit with reality. What a relief to see that the current generation of college econ students seem to have totally rejected this type of over-phsychologized incoherent "economics" and have instead pursued business careers while simultaneoudsy waking up late, and staying up all night drinking cappucino with interesting people. Lunch can take all day, too. So Tibor got some of it right but most of it wrong. Ronald Reagan got more of it right, but partisans of the left will never admit it. So read this book if your 60's reject professor forces you to, but challenge the paradigm of Veblenesque, dead-to-the-market stupidity which masquerades for "economics" in this book. I still hate thinking about it 20 years after reading it!

The puritan economy

Review Date: 2005-01-02
This book is must for all people who want to challenge the current free market dogma. Scitovsky shows that economic practices are aspects of one's culture: people in different countries spend their money very differently. These spending patterns are not based on the amount of income but on what is important to them. Thus Europeans with less income than Americans spend more of their income on fresh fruit and other foods, as well as on entertainent. Americans may buy bigger, but Europeans buy better. An Americam will boast about how much something cost, while a European will boast about how much they saved.
By showing that economics is based on culture, the whole concept of economics as a value free science gets undermined.
And, the book is readable for the non professional.

Excessive Stimulation or Excessive Comfort?
Helpful Votes: 7 out of 9 total.
Review Date: 1999-08-06
This bifurcated question lies at the core of this excellent classic. The assumption that all choice is rational, that rationality choses freedom apriori, and freedom is its own intrinsic good has been the foundation of contemporary economics and liberal political theory for more than a century? This book challenges this and other assumptions, demonstrating that the true human "need" is not for freedom in itself, but instrumentally, so that our choices to bring about the right mixture of stimulation in our lives is balanced by an appropriate dose of comfort. Too much stimulation produces pain, too much comfort produces boredom, the excess of which lies outside the "mean."

This book goes beyond challenging our most basic presumptions; it argues coherently, cohesively, and cogently that the summa bonum of human life is not merely choice, but the right choices that balance our conflicting desires for something "new" with our desire for "stability." Most theories gravitate toward one extreme or the other; Scitovsky demonstrates the Aristotlean "mean."

Sadly, this book is only available in hardback at and is very pricey. Not that this book isn't worth the high cost Oxford Press demands, rather that it will unfortunately limit widespread access to this treasure. For those wanting a preview of this book's contents, see "Critical Review" Vol 10, No.4.

It's a great adjunct to my treatment with my chiropractor. My chiropractor told me that a lot of patients do better when they eat more protein. It wasn't until I happened to open to the page that discussed protein, carbohydrates and insulin (around p.122)that I understood why that is true. The book is helping me to learn more about taking better care of myself during my recovery.

I like the pictures that show me how to do the exercises properly.

The part that seems to need improvement is something like information on the Alexander Technique, and some of the other methods. But things that are familiar to chiropractor such as nutrition and chiropractic methods are excellent in this book.

Since I got RSI myself, I've read a number of books on the subject, and of all I've read, this book was at the bottom of the barrel. I'm not saying it is completely without merits, but most of the good advice are available in all other books I've read. I do, however, fail to see advice about meditation and guided imagery as relevant to RSI.

Alternatives in RSI treatment

Review Date: 1998-07-24
This book provides information on RSI that includes alternative treatments, in contrast to (or to complement, I should say) Pascarelli/Quilter's standard-med emphasis. The difficulty in treating RSI has prompted a great deal of interest in alternative therapies.

I think the real strength of what Dr. Tim has written is his emphasis on an interdisciplinary treatment approach. In contrast to consulting a single practitioner who may have limited perspective and treatment preferences, Dr. Tim advocates for a team effort that *includes* standard medical professionals but brings in other practices such as chiropractic, acupuncture, massage, and others. Also, I think the book gives a decent basic rundown on the physiology of RSI, and includes good rehab information. While I consider some of the therapies presented here to be very questionable, at a minimum you will learn what each method claims to achieve for you from a writer who is not trying to sell one of them over! the other but hopes to draw something from each.

As an athletic trainer, I purchased the book for another source in dealing with my athletes and their injuries. I am always looking for summaries of injuries that I might present to them that will put them at ease and help them understand the treatment protocols. I found that too much information was outdated in the book, which kinda goes along with the people who it is meant for. The book did mention plenty of common injuries, however, I would not tell my friends or family some of the treatments given in the book. Most being behind the times, and speaking of behind the times, some of the Locker Room Lingo used is ways outdated, get with the times.

I picked up Mr.Dean's book after seeing him on a local talk show. What a fabulous idea--providing a treatment/reference book for common sports injuries for those of us that still think are bodies can do what they did when we were 18. It's very well organized and user-friendly. Thank you, Mr. Dean. I can guarantee these pages will be worn and tattered from use. And now I have the best "get well" gift for my friends that over-do that weekend workout and want a quick recovery.

I heard Morton Dean interviewed on the radio about Return to Glory Days and was intrigued that he suffered more slings and arrows running, playing softball and tennis than he did covering the world's hot spots. Skimming through Return to Glory Days while in line to purchase it, I, for the first time, did holiday shopping before Christmas eve and bought 8 copies of Return to Glory Days for active friends and family members. The book reads like Mr. Dean's newscasts--straight-forward, easy to understand and just the facts.

I have been in the investigative field for over 28 years. During that time I have accumulated a very extensive library of books, videos and CD's covering a wide range of investigative information and techniques. If I was only able to keep one book, it would have to be Frank Ritter's "Successful Personal Injury Investigation." Frank has done a superior job of explaining, step by step and by check lists, all of the important aspects of personal injury investigation; and he does it in a very professional yet easy to understand format. As a licensed private investigator, I can personally attest that Francis D. "Frank" Ritter, CLI, CII has gone to great lengths to compose an up-to-date, informative, educational, and comprehensive text. This is easily the most comprehensive (emphasis added) text on the topic of legal (civil) investigations in existence.

Mr. Ritter's text is very detailed and includes helpful diagrams and photos. The text also covers certain types of civil investigations that aren't (to the best of my knowledge) covered anywhere else. Another advantage of this text is that many of the techniques described in the book transcend to other aspects of private investigation (i.e. interviews and statements, report writing, photography, evidence collection and storage, etc.). Once again, this is the most comprehensive book in existence that pertains to legal (civil) investigations - period.

I would also like to personally thank Mr. Ritter for taking the time to sign my book at this year's FALI Annual Conference, where Mr. Ritter gave a wonderful presentation regarding report writing.

If you are interested in other texts regarding legal (civil) investigations, I would highly (emphasis added) recommend both "Techniques Of Legal Investigation" by Anthony M. Golec (ISBN: 0398065152) and "Complex Legal Investigations: The Ultimate Guide For Conducting Better Personal Injury Investigations" by James W. Harbert CLI, FCI (ISBN: 1891247557). Both are excellent texts that are well worth the price. With all three (3) of the aforementioned texts, your legal (civil) investigations library will be complete.

As always, check with your local library or bookstore to see if you can read/review this or any title before deciding to make a purchase. This method has effectively allowed me to make the most of my investigative library budget.

I hope you found this review helpful. If I can be of further assistance, please feel free to contact me via email at MichaelBeltz@FALI.com. Respectfully submitted, MB.

This book holds great promise in the title, however the author fails in two major areas. First, as he explains his therapeutic approach he makes reference to feeling magnetic fields from the subject's body. I highly doubt that this is possible for any human, but even if he is able to do this it is not reasonable to assume that this skill can be transferred. Second, he repeatedly recommends feeling the underlying tissues and bringing them into alignment. While this seems more plausible than feeling magnetic fields, it remains highly doubtful that anyone not doing this on a daily basis will ever develop the skill to feel tissue below several layers of skin, fat, and other connective tissue.

My final complaint is that the writing style hangs heavily on technical jargon and repeatedly makes reference to techniques to be explained on other pages, which of course, never are satisfactorily addressed. And then there is the repulsive repetition...

Just don't buy the book.

Bill Weintrab presents emerging scientific information for manual therapists and practitioners that specialize in the treatment soft tissue injuries. This book can be appreciated by both practitioner and patient and gives light on the surprisingly dynamic nature of tendons and ligaments. In addition to the case studies he has an in depth chapter on self-help techinques. With the increasing number of injuries to tendons and ligaments from repetitve stress such as carpal tunnel syndrome and sports injuries, it is refreshing to read scientific information as a solid basis for hope in treating these injuies with conservative care

Groundbreaking approach for healing injuries
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2004-04-04
In Weintraub's book he brings clarity and hopefulness to the non-surgical approach to injury (chronic and acute) recovery processes and strategies. He offers insight regarding larger whole-body patterns that influence the injury site and therefore must be addressed in the recovery process. As can be seen in his case studies, treatment is never solely a matter of specific attention to the injury site but must include attention to the related body systems as well.

Weintraub offers a clear, concise presentation of the nature, structure, function and mechanics of tendons and ligaments and healing processes. The drawings are exquisitely rendered offering a clear visual representation of the anatomical structures to which the author refers.

Particularly notable are the specific in-depth, easily understood self-help guidelines and strategies regarding rehabilitation and exercise. People dealing with sports and overuse injuries can optimistically engage in these strategies with thorough understanding of the process of healing.

This is a groundbreaking, non-surgical offering to both the professional and the larger community of people dealing with sports and overuse injury rehabilitation. Although some portions are very technical, this revised and expanded edition is accessible and useful for people with injuries/general readers. A must read for those desiring to be proactive on their own behalf.

People who suffer from chronic injuries have new possibilities for recovery. Weintraub's new book gives detailed explanations of: recent research on the nature of tendons and ligaments; precise approaches for the manual therapist; and self-help strategies for those affected. He has significantly expanded each category of information provided in his first book. As a practitioner and teacher of hands-on modalities, my interventions are far more effective as a result of reading this material. I highly recommend "Tendon and Ligament Healing" to health professionals, sports and movement trainers, and everyone interested in an innovative method of enhancing recovery from serious injury.
