Product indicates 4-6 weeks to deliver. I've been waiting nearly 3 months now. Come on Amazon, either you can sell me the book or you can't. If you can't do the job let me know and I will go elsewhere.

Update 9/11/06 - Amazon cancelled my order because they could not get the book after all these months, yet this product page still shows that it is available in 4-6 weeks. I really wanted this book, but Amazon can't seem to decide whether they sell it or not.

Gone are the days of boring first Aid books! This pocket guide is clearly illustrated and very easy to read. In a medical situation when you need an answer fast - clarity is important. I'd recommend putting these guides in your car and home. We purchased a number of them for our organization's vehicles and for various staff members.

This book is the perfect reference for all types of emergencies. I have a copy at home, in my car, and in my desk at work. The design makes it super easy to reference specific treatments, even for someone with no background in first aid.

I needed First Aid books for my emergency backpacks at home, work, and in the car. Everything I looked at was to big or to complicated. Then I found the FastAct Pocket First Aid Guide!!!
It is everything I could have asked for and more. It's small, easy to understand and jam packed with information. I will soon be ordering many more for family, friends and co-workers. Kurt Duffens and Brad Rickey hit the jackpot with this one!!!!

This guide is great for my lifestyle. Whether it be for business or personal, I travel a lot. This book is perfect because it fits easily in my briefcase, or in my suitecase. For camping, I throw it in my first aid kit. My wife also carries one in her car, and we keep one at home. It make me feel better that if first aid emergencies do occur, especially with our 6 year old son, she is prepared to take care of them. I highly recommend this book.

This book is so basic it doesn't even tell you what to do if your dog has a vaccine reaction. It only says what your dog should be vaccinated against. I thought it was going to have more info. I would not recommend this book to anyone who does not live close to a vet.

Literally, a life saver.

When my wife, Amy, and I bought Sparky, our pet pekinese, we picked up this book, though we hoped to never need it. It was so clearly written and easy to use that the entire family read it. When our oldest son, Ryan, used it to save Sparky from choking on peanut butter, we realized just how valuable the advice in this book is. Thank you, Bruce and Amanda, for saving our dog's life.

Every dog owner should have this book

"First Aid for Dogs" was one of three similar books I bought and is clearly the best, by a head and shoulders margin. It has almost 200 pages of information about a variety of conditions that can occur at home, in the neighborhood, or in the field. It makes very clear what to look for (symptoms) and then gives a helpful "decision tree" (if this is present, then do or look for ---; if that is not present, then look for or do ---). It is also very clear about what options you have in contacting a vet: Now! Same day. Within 24 hrs. Soon. Phone for advice.

It very clearly tells how to check symptoms. It covers almost every imaginable condition a dog owner would usually encounter. In the money it will save in trips to the vet that weren't needed, using this book will save its cost many times over.

The book is very well organized into sections, Part 1, What to do first, how to make splints, etc,; Part 2, What to do next, checking symptoms, what to observe; Part 3, First aid for various emergencies; Part 4, improving health, how to give/apply meds. The line drawing illustrations are simple, clear, and helpful. The index is comprehensive and useful.

By comparison, one of the other books I bought (published by a university press and written by vet school faculty), is higher priced, has about one fourth the pages, and contains much less than a twentieth the information. "Always have injuries examined by a veterinarian" is neither sufficient or particularly helpful advice. For poisoning, it recommends "veterinary advice should be sought."

The third first aid book I bought was for outdoor dogs (I have a Lab). It has a little less than half the pages that Fogle's book contains. The topics it covers are adequately treated but I've found nothing covered that is not also in Fogle's book.

This book is wonderful!

Using the information in this book, my husband and I were able to bring both of our persentage of body fat down to a really healthy, trim level. We are active, but had never been able to lose the "slightly soft" look. We figured, "If we work out and eat decently, why are we still chubby?" Cathy Sassin showed us how we were eating incorrectly (too infrequently, without balanced nutrients), and we both lost fat and gained muscle by following her advice. We also gained a lot of energy, and lost all of our hunger pangs, headaches, late-afternoon sleepiness, etc. Now when we eat or work out, we know that we are supporting our goals of lifelong fitness by getting the best results for our efforts. Changing habits takes work, but you'll be more than willing to do it when you can SEE the results immediately! This WORKS. If you're serious, buy the book and do it.

Journaling your food and exercise is very important if you are serious about your fitness, however, this book has the worst forms for doing this that I've seen. Unless you are a proficient at micro-sized handwriting, the pages will look like a mess in no time. The introduction information is ok, but not essential to the function of a journal. It was a good idea to make it spiral bound, but this can't save it from the poor form designs. You'd be better off buying a good pad of grid paper and making your own forms.

Three years ago I got serious about eating right and getting exercise. At the time, I knew little about the subject. I picked-up this book *only* because it looked like a good log for keeping track of gym work outs. It had other info about macronutriants, body fat %'s, meal size and frequency, etc. Again, I didn't read any of that material. I thought it was all going to pertain to only per se body builders. Shortly afterwards, I lost the book.

A few years later, I had read almost everything I could get my hands on about proper diet and exercise. I managed to parse through what were fad diets to the basic / real /essential info. During a recent move I found the lost Gold Gym's book. This time I read it. I was amazed. Everything I had learned over the years was contained in this book. Moreover, it stripped down to the essential elements and presented in a very quick and easy way to understand. I should have read it the first time. Most of the book is actually space to keep a food and exercise log. The format is great, and quite helpful.

(FYI: I actually logged on to Amazon to buy another copy of this book b/c I've used all the pages up in mine. When I saw it had such few reviews, I felt compelled to write one.)

Becaue I purchased this book for reasons of research I was disappointed that there was not more "meat" to it. There were few "insights" and very little technical information. The most irritating part of the work was the writing style and content. Style was an overdone and overused theme of "wings" and content was practically nonexistent. My money would have been better spent on textbooks of brain.

I was reluctant to read this book, having been disapointed many times with head-injury survival stories. I picked it up, and I simply couldn't put it down! It was incredible, the way you cry, and laugh, and smile, and even become angry at her actions! I must say this is easily the best book on head-injury I have read. I cannot see how your life could be fulfilled without reading this masterpiece.

It is a roller coaster of emotions and an unbelievably optimistic journey through the aftermath of brain injury. Bev Bryant's story is an incredible inspiration. I have read it many times over. This book should be featured on Oprah...a true literary achievement!

I am a brain surgery survivor (18 months) and buy almost every book that has something to say on the topic. I must admit tht I am partial to the survivor's' telling his or her own story rather than the well meaning but clueless caretaker telling the survivor's story. The well meaning caretaker is not disabled and doesn't live in the survivors's shoes! That's why I am recommending this book. I thought the poems were a little much and perhaps too sentimental but the message blew me away. I didn't put the book down. I only recently began to read again and this book is a keeper.

This book presents a mixture of information and factoids that most people should already know from all the information commonly available today. Most of it stems from common sense and the rest you should have gotten from your physician.
I did not get much out of this book.

If you expect to find some revolutionary therapy in this book, save your money.
Nonetheless, since this book is currently available at very low prices, it may be worth having just because it is written in a clear and entertaining style and maybe useful as a supplementary source of information.

If you have serious physical concerns, this book IS NO substitute for a visit to a good specialist.

This book is definitely NOT a "Body Repair Kit"

Although I have not yet purchased this book (I am right now!) I have become a huge believer as of today. I left St Vincent's hospital less than 6 hours ago after Dr. Feldman performed Shoulder Arthroscopy on me to help correct a repetitive injury.

I did not even know he was a writer as well, until EVERY HOSPITAL STAFF MEMBER commented to me how he is truly the best in the business from New York. I feel truly lucky and blessed that I found the perfect surgeon to help me heal.

Once I finish reading the book, I will write a review on more than just the man's skills & helpful insight.

He's good at putting medical terminology is plain English, and the muscle diagrams are very clear. But he doesn't cover all areas of the body, and seems to cover only common aliments. The appendices are very good, and the rehab exercises are very easy to understand. But the rest of the book is hard to sort through. For more detail, I prefer 'The Sports Medicine Bible' by Lyle Micheli.

Every Serious Athlete Should have this Book in their Library
Helpful Votes: 13 out of 13 total.
Review Date: 2000-10-23
Dr. Garrick's book reads like an office consultation with this highly qualified and experienced orthopedic surgeon; it is clear, straightforward and informative. For twenty years he has dealt with the abuses and insults I've heaped on my 58-year-old body during mountain climbing excursions, wilderness skiing, backpacking, foot races, ocean kayaking, and heavy back yard work. Each time I limped into his Sports Medicine Center at Bush and Hyde Streets in San Francisco, complaining about plantar fascitis, neck pain, or my latest nemesis, a torn medial meniscus, he convinced me to follow a regimen of strengthening exercises over a period of weeks instead of recommending surgery right off the bat. Sometimes it worked, other times surgery was necessary.

Jim's book is a valuable resource for any athlete, professional or otherwise. It is organized in such a way that it explains the body parts in detail and what can go wrong with them. If you are like me, you want to know just what a medial meniscus is, how it functions, and why it went south on you. Sidebars on the first page of each chapter warn you to see a doctor if any of the listed symptoms are present. Just as likely, the book may steer you along your own path to recovery. If you are a serious athlete, you should have this book in your library.

This book gives excellent information and advice on how to live with your injuries and continue to enjoy your favorite sports. It gives blunt information on the benefits of surgery for different conditions--pro and con. Garrick's credentials show his ability to get injured athletes (professionals as well as weekend warriors) back onto the playing field as quickly as possible. He also gives advice on sport-specific prevention of injuries--strengthening excerises and playing techniques. Besides a copy for myself (an aging tennis player), I am buying one for my son who does extreme snowboarding and biking and spends much time in emergency rooms!

An overview, but not a complete guide

I used this book as a guide to recovering from patellofemoral pain syndrome, a very common, but very difficult and debilitating problem.

What I found is that the book's recommendation to strengthen the vastus medialus and stretch the quadriceps group is fine as far as it goes. But for many sufferers it will not go far enough. Many doctors feel that any or all of the muscles in the leg, from the hips to the ankles, may need strengthening/and or stretching to overcome this syndrome.

If you do work on your vastus medialus (which practically every doctor recommends, it's just that other muscles may be involved), follow the author's suggestion to use an electic muscle stimulator. It builds the muscle much faster than any other form of isometric exercse. Muscle stimulators are now sold on the net.

If this doesn't cure your knee problems, don't despair. Find a more comprehensive (but not necessarily more stressful) exercise program.

CARLY is a feisty offspring of the 21st Century, who thinks she knows what she wants and doesn't complain when the reality doesn't equal her expectations. CARLY is a high-quality story of chaotic experiences and strong characters. In portraying the youngest woman of Ivy Manor, Lyn Cote has created her most memorable story yet.

Leigh is a strong individual so her daughter Carly Sinclair feels overwhelmed and subdued by her intimidating but loving mom. By high school, Carly feels like a failure as she always tries to please her demanding mother, but believes she has never succeeded as she fears failure not for her sake but for her mom's.

Leigh wants Carly to attend college, but though timorous, Carly finds backbone as she tells her mom no. Instead she enlists with the army over the objections of Leigh. Military demands prove difficult but Carly faces her fears and meets the requirements. She and her unit mobilize and deploy to Kuwait as part of Desert Shield where she is wounded. Sent home to convalesce the women of Ivy Manor provide their youngest with the healing power of love.

The latest Women of Ivy Manor (see CHLOE, BETTE, and LEIGH) is a fine family drama starring the fourth generation who needs to "escape" from her relatives especially her overbearing mom. The deep look at this reticent young woman seeking her wings to fly from the coop is well written with the wonderful backdrop of Desert Shield, the first war with Hussein. Though the ending feels contrived, fans of the miniseries will enjoy the coming of age of CARLY

When I read the first book in this series, Chloe, I was hopeful that although the book moved quickly and seemed a tad bit shallow, that overall the series would be enjoyable. I was wrong. Chloe was good, Bette was better, but then with Leigh Cote's writing seemed to take a turn for the worse, and Carly only reiterated that sentiment. I was so excited for an impactful, in depth series about four generations of American women, and what I ended up reading was a hastily-written and shallow series filled with unrealistic characters and false-feeling relationships. I understand that this is a novel, and thus by definition it will have some outlandish plot twists and character developments - but I would at least expect such things to be written in a believable way, with some depth to them. This entire book felt so false and cheesy, that I could hardly bear to finish it.
The author is trying to pass this series off as "Christian" novels, and while there are a few (and I stress "few") "Christian" references, they are so shallow, awkwardly tossed in, and completely unexplained, that there is no point in the references even being in the novel at all. Then, in Carly the main character joins the army. This is a sect of society that is fairly well-known for being rough and rugged, and yet the author has soldiers and drill sergeants saying the most unbelievably docile things, that there is NO WAY anyone could take them seriously. I felt like I was reading a book written for a pre-teen child.
I was highly disappointed in this "grand finale" to the Ivy Manor series, and I will not be reading any other books by this author.
*** For some truly good, in-depth, and entertaining reading, try Liz Curtis Higgs, Lyn Austin, Francine Rivers, or Cecelia Ahern ***

I read Serios Cycling from Ed Burke and realized that there is more to cycling than mere racing. Being a "new" cyclist at the age of 43 I had great difficulty to match the "older" cyclists that have been cycling competatively for the last 25 years. This book helped me to see what is all the preparation work behind the scenes. Mere fitness is not enough. You tend to hit the wall during training rides and feel confused because you are still not there. The understanding of how muscles work and what they need to continue performing at extreme levels of endurance made me to adapt my diet and pre-race preparation to ensure maximum energy, nutrition and oxygen are available to the working muscles to perform at their best. It was a complete mind change but today, less than three months since I bought this book fellow cyclist are questioning if I use steriods. They could not believe the improvement! The book is well laid out to explain the basic as well as the advanced detail of the body and mind and how to overcome those stages where you seem not to progress at all. If you are serious about cycling, get this book. You'll see what I mean!

As a New Mexico resident and a lover of the desert, I had high hopes for this book when I plucked it off a shelf and bought it based on the description on back. Clearly the author's story is poignant and inspiring, but that really gets lost in barely mediocre writing. Swander grossly minimizes details related to New Mexico and its cultures, and she does the same with her descriptions of mystical figures and religion, and these sort of bald descriptions & generalizations really weaken the power of the story and her credibility as a writer. This propensity also makes the story feel unfocused and unguided. The book just doesn't read very authentically. I wish I had a different experience reading it, but I didn't.

Swander does some important legwork for everyone who has suffered chronic illness and/or pain and wondered why, why, why, and how can I be healed ?!
She describes her journey to New Mexico and her hopes for finding healing there, but she discovers so much more than healing. She shares with us the wisdom of a Catholic monk, a woman with a gift for prescribing herbal remedies, and mystics such as Hildegard of Bingen, St. John of the Cross, Teresa of Avila, and St. Francis. The book also touches on other topics such as the medical establishment, meditation, the history of women healers, and relevant episodes of the author's family life. This book is a wonderful treat stuffed full of inspirational messages, information and ideas that most of us can relate to.

Swander doesn't exaggerate the extent of her recovery or the power of her regained faith, yet there is no doubt she has been transformed by this experience and by the wisdom and generosity of Lu and Father Sergei. Swander's writing is clear and accessible, and her story is an inspiration.

An excellent book of specific explanations relating to golfing injuries and treatment options. Easy to follow advice in a very humerous style. Technical content made user friendly. An enjoyable read.

The book provided me with some great general knowledge and actually helped me diagnose my injuries/little pains. I felt however his treatment methods were quite simple and repetitive. I believe in some more alternative methods to ailments sometimes. Chiropractic care can be beneficial, but the author stuck to conventional rest/ice/physical therapy/surgery fixes on all ailments. A bit disappointed in that, but overall worth the money and time spent.

Having taken up golf again once my son had grown, I quickly realized that I was not in the physical shape of the 20 year old I had been when I first started playing in college. After my first injury to my elbow and a badly strained shoulder, I started looking around for a book that would help me with conditioning, preventing injuries and counsel me if (please, no!) this happened once again. At this point I had had enough of physical therapy, MRIs, etc. and didn't wish to injure myself further.

In his book Dr. Divot addresses in two of his chapters The Female Golfer and The Older Golfer -- just made for me, although I have trouble admitting the latter. Over this winter I'm even trying out some of his conditioning exercises in the hope of beginning the golf season stronger and less prone to injury.

I gave copies of his book as gifts to my golf group this past Christmas -- we're all female golfers, but not all of us will admit to being older. We'll see how we do in the Spring.
