Book is very in depth. Pictures in the book are pretty lame. Although, everything is explained well in the book. Not worth 65 dollars, buy the product used if you can.

Great Biomechanics Text!

This book is very accessable, which was obviously one of the goals of the author.

Read it slowly and carefully and you will undoubtedly aquire some of the understanding necessary to consider human movement in terms of natural mechanics.

Vanessa Vega is an amazing and strong woman. The way that she shares her story is inspiring in so many ways. I have read many memoirs about self-injury, and none provided me with as much as hope as "Comes the Darkness, Comes the Light."

A comprehensive study of diseases and their (mis) diagnosis

Review Date: 1998-08-23
This book compiles a GREAT deal of useful information about plant pathology. It covers, as any good work about plant disease should, fertilization, nutritional deficiencies, and environmental factors such as drought, freezing, lightning, air pollution, water contamination etc. before attempting to fix the problem, the work stresses the causal effects and ,similarly, the visual pitfalls that may provide evidence of an unseen insect symptom (galling, nematodes, etc.) The work was written mainly for the temperate zone, but using it in my home sub-tropics was an eye-opener! Reccomended reading for Horticulturalists in the upper echelon, or for Pathologists as a reference, and a reminder to look to the outlying areas for an answer, It's always there!

An update that was well worth waiting for!

Here is another one for my short list of horticulture references.

As someone who makes a living looking at these diseases, let me tell you: The photos are top notch! The pictures alone tell the bulk of the story and really make this book worth it. All the latest diseases are here including Sudden Oak Death. A text like this could easily be beyond the understanding of most gardeners, but the authors use an excellent mix of common and scientific names and a wealth of descriptive text to bring things back to earth. Be a little careful making a field diagnosis from just the photos. A quick look through the book, especially the last section on physical and environmental damage, will demonstrate that a lot of things look alike.

An included CD contains a complete reference list in a 333 page Word document, but nothing else. This is very useful if you are looking for more information or a specific cross-reference.

My ONLY complaint is that the plants and diseases are combined into one index rather then two like the similar book "Insects that feed on Trees and Shrubs".

What a pity that Miller was so narrowly focused that he did not even mention the important reforms brought about by this early proponent of mine safety and the formation of labor unions in the United States. Roy, the first mining inspector for the state of Ohio, was the author of A History of the Coal Miners, The Coal Mines, and the Practical Miner's Companion.

This self-taught Scottish immigrant went on to change the face of coal mining in America because his wound gave him the time to write and speak up for his friends underground in the mines.

Unique, compelling

I am not generally a reader of Civil War books, but found this work to be an amazing insight into the life of a soldier, and into the human condition. Highly recommended.

Interesting but badly edited

Fallen Soldier is a portion of the Civil War diary of Andrew Roy. It is interesting as a portrayal of what happened to badly wounded men both on the battlefield and in later life. It certainly works as a story of medical incompetence (the result of low medical technology, not necessarily doctors' negligence). It really isn't particularly gory or harrowing to read -- very few Civil War memoirs are and this is consistent with the genre. What I found annoying about this book was the editing. The text has been cut down so as to only mention Roy's wounding and medical treatment, but the original document, as the editor admits in passing, was much longer. Some segments are given as appendices. Why not just give the entire diary as it was written, or at least include all the material not related to the wound as one appendix?

There is a lot of information in this book. The information it has provided my family and friends has been indespensible. We have referred to this book countless times for a variety of reasons. It has helped us in gathering and organizing important documents and helped us in developing a family plan for emergencies (we have hurricanes here). Everyone knows what to do in the event of an emergency, particularly in situations where we may not be together. We established where to go and how to stay in contact with each other - especially useful when phones may be out. We have given books as presents and I understand that it can be used in fund raisers. Man I wish some organizations would sell something like this - something that is actually useful ! Everyone should have a copy of "It's a Disaster"

I have a copy of this book in my disaster "GO" bag & car glove compartment. As a retired emergency manager, I was so impressed with this book, that I ordered 250-copies for employees, prior to my retirement. This book, Red Cross 1st aid & preparedness materials, & "Chronicals of Katrina", gives the best information regarding how to prepare for disasters, & additionally, necessary information on how to begin the road to recovery, post-disaster. Many Red Cross materials are free, & the 2-books mentioned, offer the best value for the information you need to prepare, respond & recover from a disaster. susanf

This is an outstanding guide. It brings together emergency preparedness and immediate action. Bill and Janet have painstakingly researched all facets of the most likely injuries to occur in a disaster situation. This is a must have resource guide because we know that in a major disaster situation local emegency services are beyond overtaxed and help may not show for hours or days. The second half of the book on preparedness steps are divided by specific types of disasters - hurricane, earthquake, etc. The guides, information, and just plain common sense solutions will save lives. I wish I'd had this book during Hurricane Fran in North Carolina and Hurricane Georges in Puerto Rico. With my flashlight, NOAA radio, canned food, and "It's a Disaster" book, I'll be ready for the next one. Buy one for yourself and one for everybody you care about.

This book is perfect for kids and not bad for adults either. It is very clearly written and has outstanding illustrations. The health strategies and tips provided are done in the context of prevention... But things happen, accidents occur, kids get hurt. This book helps you and your children learn/know what to do in these situations. A fun, interesting, read.

You are never to young to learn!

I have 2 young children (ages 5 and 9 yrs old) myself and helping them understand what happens to their bodies when they hurt themselves is tough to do. Not to mention what to do when they are injured. Sometimes it is more "scared about the unknown" than anything. This book really helps the child research and learn how their bodies tell them when they are hurt and how to take care of the simpler injuries themselves. Plus, the format of the book draws them into learning about their bodies before an injury occurs. The illustrations are funny and help drive the points home in a kids kind of way. Great book and my daughter is already trying out the different first aid techniques in advance. Teach the child and you have taught the adult forever!

Too much for younger kids, too simple for older kids.

This was a pretty good book - I almost gave it 4 stars. The book has some useful info and the advice is sound (based on other 1st aid books I've read), so I don't think it would be a waste of anyone's money. The stated reading level is 9-12 but I felt it was a little too ambitious for most kids under 12 and too simple for kids over 12. I read this book to my 7 year old and most of it was over her head and had too many "steps". MY 12 year old also read it and she too thought there were too many "steps" in the instructions on what to do in an emergency. The sections in each chapter called "GET HELP!" were confusing to both kids. If you're looking for a Safety/1st Aid book for someone under 12 I would highly recommend "The Safety Book for Active Kids" (also sold by Amazon). If the reader is someone over 12 then a Red Cross First Aid Course and an adult first aid manual might be a better use of your money.

I was moved from tears to outright laughter in the span of four hours. The author, Luther Nussbaum, does an outstanding job of bringing you into his thoughts, fears and emotions as his world collides head-on with his worst nightmare. I was drawn into this very personal story and found myself thinking Luther's thoughts and feeling his pain. The Nussbaum family's love and their enduring passion to embrace events with realism and deep compassion sprinkled with a dose of humor made me want to preach the power of the human spirit.

I highly recommend buying this book. Get it into your bookclub or just hand a copy to a friend. This book has both "Oprah" appeal and enough detail that you will learn a tremendous amount about the realities of working with individuals who have fallen into a coma.

Many kudos to the author who, with his family and friends, reminds us what it means to be truly blessed.

The Mountaineering First Aid Guide covers various subjects about first aid when help is delayed. The book is for when you are out in the woods, mountains, destert, away from our normail EMS response we all are accustomed too. Several items are a little different than the Red Cross Course, so if you are taking the course use the Red Cross answers. This would be a very good book to have with you in your first aid kit.

This is a great guide to the basics of first aid in the mountains, whether it is a climbing or backing situation. For a fairly short book (170 pages or so) it covers a lot. Combine this with the chapter on first aid and alpine rescue in "Mountaineering the freedom of the Hills" (same publisher) and you have about everything you need. "Medicine of the Outdoors" by Paul S. Auerbach, M.D.is more complete on many medical aspects, if you are looking for yet more information.

Although this book may not cover EVERY detail about back country survival, it definitely gives some good pointers whether a person is in a large group or a small one.

Mountaineering is a dangerous sport, and the tactics and procedures in this book can be applied to every day situations as well.

This is a definite must-read for anyone who is responsible for another life -- from trail guides to backpackers to parents to babysitters -- it is a must-have for every household!
