We Really have "NO EXCUSES"Review Date: 2008-01-14
Many books I have read have a lot of the same types of advise, but what is very unique about Jim Flood's book is that it is told through his experiences. I highly recommend this book to anyone that is not where they want to be in life and want to make a significant positive change. I am on my second time around with a highlighter.
Thank you for your inspiration and mentorship.

Close your eyes, Listen!Review Date: 2008-11-06
... It would have been great if you heard a train and better yet if you could have felt its power. (This will make sense after you read this book) If not, did you hear your heart? No, no, not its beat, but its ability to love, its capacity to heal, its desire for tranquility. Couldn't "hear" anything? Then I recommend you read: What I Thought I Knew. Stahura's essays are for those looking for that hard to find inner self where one learns that you may have to let go in order to possess; that Faith can't be taught in Church; and, that love really can overcome all.

What I Think I Have LearnedReview Date: 2008-11-04
I would recommend "What I Thought I Knew" to anyone who is--or has--struggled with self-empowerment, with self-doubt, or with the complicated maneuverings of this life's journey. And isn't that all of us?
A Book to be Savored"Review Date: 2008-09-24
Ok, I confess. I've not finished Barbara's book yet...but I know I will because it has already enhanced my life and my relationship with my 16-year old daughter. I read about Barbara's break with her dad after being spanked at 10-years old where she writes, "Something tore in my chest -- I could literally feel it -- as my heart twisted and broke, severing for me something elemental in our relationship."
Well, after reading that I walked into my daughter's bedroom to let her know that no matter what she might do in life, whatever 'bad behavior' or whatever she might do that I might not agree with, even dating or marrying some guy I didn't like... there was nothing she could do that would have me not love her.
So, this is a book to be savored for it reveals life -- real and authentic life. Read this book and if it touches your heart as much as it has mine, share it with all your friends. It deserves to be read by many during these troubling times for through it the author shares her 'truth,' in a way that can touch our hearts and return us to ourselves.
What I know for sureReview Date: 2008-07-11
In her first collection of personal essays titled "What I Thought I Knew," Barbara Stahura raises the bar for essay writers and readers alike. Her voice is clear, her writing clean and tight, and downright elegant. Stahura has years of interview experience with the likes of Deepok Chopra, Wayne Dyer, Don Miguel Ruiz, Louise Hay, Biologist Bruce Lipton, and Artist Valarie James (to name but a few.) She's no stranger to provocative questions and digging deep for answers.
It appears as though Stahura knows how to use those same tools to explore her own psyche and life experiences, deftly crafting pieces in which she generously shares her insights, her feelings, and her transformational shifts. An excellent essay lays track for the reader to appreciate from an observer point of view as well as inspiring the reader to self-exploration. These are excellent essays. The light Stahura shines on her interior processes shines through her work. Regardless of the genre, when a writer risks the deep honesty Stahura works from, an authentic connection is bound to happen.
Here's the bottom line: when I started reading this book I just didn't want to stop. Whether Stahura is describing her relationship with her father, her Catholic school experience, her quantum leap from certain death looming in the corporate world to finding her soul's calling, or the "tectonic" shift in her life when beloved husband Ken suffered severe brain trauma from a hit-and-run motorcycle accident, she never leaves her reader. We may not have covered the literal territories she describes, but we've all experienced the same very human emotions. She writes for herself and she writes for us; the result is our joining in a deeply satisfying seamless encounter.
In her own words; "Sometimes, I wake up early in my grown-up bed, windows open around it, and hear the distant whistles of trains. It is then I remember that little girl who did not yet know the most important thing her grown-up self would learn: Life is all about choices. Learning how to change your mind, when the moment is right, is often the best gift you can give yourself."
The second best gift you can give yourself is this book.

Great book, the Best Vet!Review Date: 2008-05-05
As for Dr. Tedaldi himself, all I can add is this. As a dogowner, never having children myself, I have lived for my great pyrs literally, they ARE my children. And my oldest dog/baby Lars, had struggled mightily physically the last year and half of his life. And all I can say is if it hadn't been for Dr. Tedaldi, I may not have been able to enjoy Lars that last year and a half of his life. His warm and compassionate and outstanding treatment of his many ailments kept my dog alive and also kept me a peace of mind as well. I'll ALWAYS be grateful to him for that! After dealing with Angell Memorial Hospital in Boston for years, there is no better Veterinarian that I've ever known than Dr. Tedaldi!

If you use self-injury in your life, you will find yourself saying "She's just like me!" countless times. Being able to do this is a great relief.
I learned that self-injury is in fact a creative method of dealing with intolerable situations, and I realized that it in fact served a valuable, LIFE SAVING purpose in my life. I know this sounds absurd to people who cannot imagine self-injury at all, but believe me, please, it is true. I also learned that its value to me properly diminished as I acquired new, safer ways to deal with the overwhelming memories of my past. This book, in combination with therapy, gave me ideas and tools for retiring my old, dangerous, yet valuable ways of dealing with my feelings.

Incredible, Thought Provoking Story About Our Soldiers Review Date: 2006-08-02
Gives the lie to to the low American mortality figures in Iraq.Review Date: 2006-11-17
Fortunately the Australian media is slightly better than the pap served up by the media in the country that is causing the sickening mayhem in Iraq and we know only a little of the true monstrousness of this war to bring democracy to the unwashed masses of Iraq. Glasser lays it on the line and spells out, particularly in the chapter Final Diagnosis, the enormity of the American soldier's burden in this conflict. On page 73 he writes that there were 600 ammunition dumps scattered around Iraq when the Shock and Awe invasion ended. There's nothing unexpected in this but the problem happened when none of the Shock and Awe victors policed these dumps and they were cleaned out by the "defeated" Iraqi army. What this means in the reality of ground combat is that there is a virtually unlimited supply of hugely powerful explosives available to mine roads and anywhere else American soldiers find themselves in the horror of Iraq. Glasser goes into medical detail about what happens to middle aged reservists who are caught in these explosions. He talks as the expert he is about the wounds suffered by soldiers caught in an explosion of this huge power. He talks about what 155mm shells hooked to butane gas tanks does to a person's head when it explodes. Because of quick evacuation and superb treatment these poor wounded live but the impact on, particularly the head, causes horrific , lifelasting injuries.
I do not think, because of the media, America and the world in general knows what is happening to American soldiers in Iraq; I believe that the low death rates for US soldiers has led America to tolerate this war more than its true horror would indicate. Glasser's wonderful, readable and understandable book lifts the veil on the terrible price being paid for what has become a cesspool for American youth.

The Boo Boo BookReview Date: 2008-05-31
A MUST HAVEReview Date: 2006-04-14
Who knew scabs and blisters could be so irresistibly touchable? From the delightfully witty-and informative-verse, to the sticky, picky, bubbly, and band-aided catalogue of injuries, this is a must have for parents with a sense of humor and a desire to make every moment a learning experience. We received this as a gift for our toddler. After he got that first scraped knee, we took the book out and opened to the "SCRAPES" page, featuring a teary-eyed girl with a scraped knee. Big deal right?...but on further inspection, the scrape on her knee is in fact a sticky, red "boo boo." We all touched the scrape and screamed with delight as the page clung to our fingers! My son was instantly won over. It is certainly a favorite (not just for him...
The entire book is interactive-you can lift a flap of a cast to see an x-ray of a fractured arm, weave a ribbon to mimic stitches, connect the dots of a rash... you pick the injury, they have created a clever way to discuss how the body heals and what it looks and feels like.

When I read this book to my four-year-old granddaughter, she told true accounts of her own "boo boos". We had a grand time recalling occasions when we had skinned our knees, ended up with blisters on our feet, and bruised our arms. We also talked about being brave when we get hurt. More importantly, The Boo Boo Book provided me with the opportunity to talk about being careful and "playing it safe". Children of all ages will love this welcome addition to their library.

Jim's optimism and unending determination is reflected in his writing. The book is practical in the sense that the excerpts all have a lesson or valuable point and each chapter ends with questions that can guide someone on their path to recovery. Congratulations Jim on completing an exceptional resource that I'm sure will become indispensible to others.
