Watching Jim's road to recovery has been such an inspiration for all who know him. And to put pen to paper to share his journey is truly a gift to anyone who may need a different perspective on how to deal with challenges and obstacles in life. Jim wrote this book to help others who are going through the same experience as he is but it spans a much wider audience and can be helpful to more than those who have suffered an acquired brain injury.

Jim's optimism and unending determination is reflected in his writing. The book is practical in the sense that the excerpts all have a lesson or valuable point and each chapter ends with questions that can guide someone on their path to recovery. Congratulations Jim on completing an exceptional resource that I'm sure will become indispensible to others.

I have known Jim from the time he was 13 and he has never been a quitter and in fact he is the opposite. He is a winner and this book is just another example of how he simply Just does it.

Jim's attitude and spirit is some thing we can all learn from and I for one am glad he has written this book and hopefully it will inspire many others who have faced the trials and tribulations that he has faced.

We really have "No Excuses"

Many books I have read have a lot of the same types of advise, but what is very unique about Jim Flood's book is that it is told through his experiences. I highly recommend this book to anyone that is not where they want to be in life and want to make a significant positive change. I am on my second time around with a highlighter.
Thank you for your inspiration and mentorship.

Jim, Congratulations on an excellent written book!!! You have shed light on the road to recovery followig a brain injury not to mention for others recovering from any type of illness or injury. Thank you for sharing the story of your recovery as well as what your family and close friends have also gone through with you to this point. "No Excuses Accepted" for me was a useful and empowering book. It is a helpful practical straight-talk opus of taking charge of the many layers of one's recovery. The author's personal account of reconstruction from a near fatal cataclysmic car accident was candidly shared. This chronicle of his on going three year triumphant recuperative endeavor is highly motivational. I've learned to live in the moment with new tools to fight off the foes of recovery.

I found Mr. Flood to be a relateable hero. Effectual advise is offered, from the practical information about what to expect out of the team put in place to assist one's recovery, to enlightening us on how to conquer the ardent emotional pitfalls and barriers along the way.

I recommend reading this book- you will be inspired by Jim Flood's experiences and wisdom to improve- mind body and soul.

As a 3 day a week exerciser, I found this book to be of great help! In particular, it helped me to correct some bad exercising habits/techniques that I had developed. I've noticed a marked reduction in lower back pain as a result of incorporating the workout tips into my regular routine. The book also helped to dispell some common exercise myths. I would recommend this book to anyone -- from the weekend workout warrior to the professional athlete -- who is interested in reaping all the healthy benefits of exercising. There's something in this book for everyone whatever your fitness level!

A must for getting the most of your fitness routine!

Over this past year, I have had several set backs starting a fitness routine resulting in injuries. As a working professional and mother of two, it's challenging to carve time out for fitness. I am looking for optimal results with limited time. Peak Perfmance Fitness is a great resource for developing a solid fitness foundation. Jennifer Rhodes has a gift for providing practical, simple explanations for how to prevent injury and develop an effective fitness plan. The diagrams and step-by-step instructions are a real value add!

I love this book! Maintaining proper alignment, and therefore helping to prevent injuries, and chronic pain, is so much more important than mere aesthetics. Anyone who has suffered an injury that affects one's mobility can attest to this. This book will show you how to keep your body healthy and well-aligned, for long-term health. She writes in an exceptionally clear fashion as well, and the way she explains how your body is supposed to move is brilliant easy to understand. Fantastic. I hope she writes another book, she's very dynamic.

As a female approaching 60, I have attempted many fitness programs only to be interrupted by an injury. I was intrigued by Jennifer Rhodes' book, Peak Performane Fitness, because she emphasizes fitness without injury or strain. After reading through Jennifer's book, I now understand why my attempts to improve my health through exercise have failed. I have developed a beginners program using the guidelines in her book. My focus is on improving my overall posture, along with cardiovascular exercise. In partiular, I highly recommend the foam roll referred to in Chapter 4 for spinal alignment. Jennifer has the knowledge and experience to provide good tools for exercise without injury and the suggested exercises with illustrations make it simple for one to follow. I am now looking forward to an ACTIVE retirement.

I am a 32 year old guy. I've been playing soccer, tennis, and golf almost all of my life. Over the past three years though, I've been plagued by recurring injuries to my knees and shoulders. I assumed my body was simply weakening with age, and couldn't take the blows like it used to. Luckily, I found Peak Performance Fitness before I put myself out to pasture! This easy to read book explained how my pain was actually due to years of "microtrauma"- continual irritations caused by poor alignment of my body causing me to torque and stress my muscles and joints in ways they just weren't meant to take. Clear illustrations gave me an understanding of how my body can and should work in harmony, with small changes in my lifestyle and exercise regimen. The book stepped me through the crafting of a workout, custom made to strengthen and realign my trouble spots. Within a few weeks, I could already feel my power and confidence improving. Ms Rhodes's book is an essential read for anyone who wants to keep their body working efficiently and looking and feeling great.

This book is so helpful. I think every dog and cat owner should have one. It is so easy to use and can save yourself a lot of money in Vet visits if you're like me and worry about every little thing that might be wrong with your 'baby." I like the glossary and illustrations. I'm getting one as a Christmas gift for all the dog owners in my family. You can't beat it for $8.

The second worst thing that can happen to your pet is for him to get sick or hurt; the truly worst thing is for you as the pet owner to be totally unprepared when accident or misfortune strikes. This book covers all the basics of first aid care for dogs and cats, from cuts and bee stings to convulsions, choking, and traumatic, life-threatening injuries. Steps to take in any given situation are laid out one at a time, and a number of very helpful illustrations make all of the information as direct and understandable as it can be. The book is arranged alphabetically by first aid topic, so you can always find the information you need quickly and easily. You really don't even have to read the book. Just having it close at hand when something happens to your pet can make a real difference; it can even help save your loyal companion's life. I would recommend reading the book, though, or at least glancing through it. You can learn important warning signs to watch for in your pet's behavior and help catch a problem in its early stages. In cases of real emergency, knowing what not to do can be just as important as knowing what you should do. You would do well to follow the precautionary suggestions the book describes--putting together a pet first aid kit, for example. By no means can or should this book take the place of professional veterinary care, a point which the text emphasizes, but it can help keep your pet healthy and happy.

I couldn't agree more with the previous comment. I would only add that Dr. Bobbie Mammato, the author, conveys her wealth of experience in emergency veterinary care and public health, and makes this an extremely readable and useful text. In fact, why isn't Dr. Mammato credited as the author on your Web site

Everyone thinks they know it all, when they clearly don't. "What I Thought I Knew" is a collection of reflective essays from Barbara Stahura. She goes through life with an open mind, and learns new things daily, leading her to advance forward and look back on her life and give herself insight on what she has learned over the last few years. "What I Thought I Knew" is poignant, entertaining, and many readers will find a bit of themselves as they go through Stahura's writings.

Close your eyes. Listen!
... It would have been great if you heard a train and better yet if you could have felt its power. (This will make sense after you read this book) If not, did you hear your heart? No, no, not its beat, but its ability to love, its capacity to heal, its desire for tranquility. Couldn't "hear" anything? Then I recommend you read: What I Thought I Knew. Stahura's essays are for those looking for that hard to find inner self where one learns that you may have to let go in order to possess; that Faith can't be taught in Church; and, that love really can overcome all.

What I Think I Have Learned

The "Personal Essay" is a tricky genre. How does documentation of one person's life make the connective leap to those outside the circle of that writer's individual experience? Each essay penned by Barbara Stahura in "What I Thought I Knew" finds root in our basic fears, our emotional struggles, and subsequently touches a universal nerve. Unlike other "inspirational" publications, Stahura's revelations follow the writer's maxim of "SHOW, don't TELL". She IS a truth teller--even when that truth is uncomplimentary. Stahura unwraps each process of personal growth and shows, by example, a path to being that Best Person we each aspire to. What I learned from Barbara's book is that a critical step to being whole is to be bravely honest, first, with myself.

I would recommend "What I Thought I Knew" to anyone who is--or has--struggled with self-empowerment, with self-doubt, or with the complicated maneuverings of this life's journey. And isn't that all of us?

A Book to be Savored"

"I cried more from anger and humiliation than the slight sting. Spankings were for babies! How could my father do this to me when I was so grown up? (at 10).... He sent me to my room, and despite my shame, the only thing I could think to do was try to make things better with him again. He needed to know I was still a good girl and wouldn't do bad things again. What would I do if my dad didn't love me?"

Ok, I confess. I've not finished Barbara's book yet...but I know I will because it has already enhanced my life and my relationship with my 16-year old daughter. I read about Barbara's break with her dad after being spanked at 10-years old where she writes, "Something tore in my chest -- I could literally feel it -- as my heart twisted and broke, severing for me something elemental in our relationship."

Well, after reading that I walked into my daughter's bedroom to let her know that no matter what she might do in life, whatever 'bad behavior' or whatever she might do that I might not agree with, even dating or marrying some guy I didn't like... there was nothing she could do that would have me not love her.

So, this is a book to be savored for it reveals life -- real and authentic life. Read this book and if it touches your heart as much as it has mine, share it with all your friends. It deserves to be read by many during these troubling times for through it the author shares her 'truth,' in a way that can touch our hearts and return us to ourselves.

"Words that arise with coherence and beauty on the page, that's the holy mystery I serve. Like the nuns devoted to God, on my best days writing lets me serve something larger than myself: human self-expression that occasionally touches someone else's heart and brings us closer together." Barbara Stahura

In her first collection of personal essays titled "What I Thought I Knew," Barbara Stahura raises the bar for essay writers and readers alike. Her voice is clear, her writing clean and tight, and downright elegant. Stahura has years of interview experience with the likes of Deepok Chopra, Wayne Dyer, Don Miguel Ruiz, Louise Hay, Biologist Bruce Lipton, and Artist Valarie James (to name but a few.) She's no stranger to provocative questions and digging deep for answers.
It appears as though Stahura knows how to use those same tools to explore her own psyche and life experiences, deftly crafting pieces in which she generously shares her insights, her feelings, and her transformational shifts. An excellent essay lays track for the reader to appreciate from an observer point of view as well as inspiring the reader to self-exploration. These are excellent essays. The light Stahura shines on her interior processes shines through her work. Regardless of the genre, when a writer risks the deep honesty Stahura works from, an authentic connection is bound to happen.
Here's the bottom line: when I started reading this book I just didn't want to stop. Whether Stahura is describing her relationship with her father, her Catholic school experience, her quantum leap from certain death looming in the corporate world to finding her soul's calling, or the "tectonic" shift in her life when beloved husband Ken suffered severe brain trauma from a hit-and-run motorcycle accident, she never leaves her reader. We may not have covered the literal territories she describes, but we've all experienced the same very human emotions. She writes for herself and she writes for us; the result is our joining in a deeply satisfying seamless encounter.
In her own words; "Sometimes, I wake up early in my grown-up bed, windows open around it, and hear the distant whistles of trains. It is then I remember that little girl who did not yet know the most important thing her grown-up self would learn: Life is all about choices. Learning how to change your mind, when the moment is right, is often the best gift you can give yourself."
The second best gift you can give yourself is this book.

Dr. Tedaldi is one of the most down to earth, intelligent and funny vets I have ever met. I am caring for the sweetest 13 year old dog who has cancer and very bad arthritis which at times has presented some challenges, especially since he's about 100 lbs. Dr. Tedaldi is only a phone call away and I never feel that any question I ask is too silly. Just by the way Dr. Tedaldi touches Ajax when he's here I can tell how much he truly cares for animals. Keep up the great work !!

First of all I think the book is terrific and really should be on the coffee table of every dogowner! It provides specific information on how to treat and take care of your beloved dog on a day to day basis. And as specific as the information is, it also reads easy enough, (ie, we don't get bombarded with complicated medical terms that we don't understand)that every petowner can understand and use wisely in creating a happy and healthy dog. And all the while providing you the information you need to be responsive to your dog if certain conditions develop either internally or externally.
As for Dr. Tedaldi himself, all I can add is this. As a dogowner, never having children myself, I have lived for my great pyrs literally, they ARE my children. And my oldest dog/baby Lars, had struggled mightily physically the last year and half of his life. And all I can say is if it hadn't been for Dr. Tedaldi, I may not have been able to enjoy Lars that last year and a half of his life. His warm and compassionate and outstanding treatment of his many ailments kept my dog alive and also kept me a peace of mind as well. I'll ALWAYS be grateful to him for that! After dealing with Angell Memorial Hospital in Boston for years, there is no better Veterinarian that I've ever known than Dr. Tedaldi!

This is a Tuft's-trained vet that cuts to the chase on how to care for your ailing dog. I think that this works much in the same way as a good first-aid book would. No dog owner should be without it and all dog owners would benefit from reading it. After all, you want to know more before taking your puppy to the vet. This book does just that.

Jake Tedaldi is without a doubt the best veterinarian our family has ever known. This book is a great contribution to human-dog communication. If our dogs could speak to us they would tell us many of these things, but instead Dr. Tedaldi speaks for them, in clear and reassuring language, not flinching from the sometimes startling or upsetting things our dogs are going through, but always giving their humans great guidance on how to be their best friend. This is the kind of book you can pick up in the middle of the night to find out what to do if your dog has just been sprayed by a skunk. Or maybe you just can't figure out why "my dog keeps smacking her lips." It's organized into sections such as "my dog has something stuck" and "my dog seems sick." It is a very practical book written with affection and compassion for both sides of the human-dog equation.

I need a book on this topic that's written for a teen level: simple wording, not complext clincial concetps, leaning toward insights and solutions rather than research and academic data...But especially something that's not boring or written over the heads of young teens (age 14-16). Would this a good book?

In this book, Jane Wegscheider Hyman interviewed fifteen women who self-injure themselves to learn more about their battle with self-injury and explain how and why they continually and intentionally injure themselves. This is a fantastic and informing piece of work. Hyman has obviously done a great deal of work over a period of time. The women talk about their pasts, reasons for their self-injury, and troubles associated with it and their hopes of recovery. Hyman is not only very educated in this field but she also is very compassionate about the women's stories and situations. This is an excellent source of information, and along with, A Bright Red Scream: Self-Mutilation and the Language of Pain by Marilee Strong, they are the best books on the subject matter. I greatly suggest this book for those who self-injure, those who know someone who does and professionals that care for them.

I respect what the previous reviewer wrote about triggering. But for me, the possibility of triggering is outweighed by the realization that I am not alone in dealing with this issue in my life. I saw real hope in the words of women who have to a greater or lesser degree found ways to creatively deal with lessening or eliminating self-injury in their lives. I spent decades believing I was alone in this struggle.

If you use self-injury in your life, you will find yourself saying "She's just like me!" countless times. Being able to do this is a great relief.

I learned that self-injury is in fact a creative method of dealing with intolerable situations, and I realized that it in fact served a valuable, LIFE SAVING purpose in my life. I know this sounds absurd to people who cannot imagine self-injury at all, but believe me, please, it is true. I also learned that its value to me properly diminished as I acquired new, safer ways to deal with the overwhelming memories of my past. This book, in combination with therapy, gave me ideas and tools for retiring my old, dangerous, yet valuable ways of dealing with my feelings.

Thanks to Jane Wegscheider Hyman and the fifteen women she interviewed.

As someone who has self injured for over 25 years (since age 5), this was THE book that helped me to start coming out of my denial and being able to seek help. While it can be triggering, it is outweighed by the number of "ahhhh haaa's" one get's from reading it. It was very enlightening and helped me to reduce the shame I'd experienced, enough that I could finally seek help. One thing ESPECIALLY unique about this book is that it does not limit itself to cutting and burning - it deals with all forms of self injury - something that FEW books on the topic of self injury do. If you are looking to buy just one book on the topic, let this be it...

This book has been a very healing guide for me. Not only from reading it, but also from being one of the 15 who participated in its writing. Reading back now on my own words has given me continued encouragement and hope. Jane did such a wonderful job of being a voice for me and the 14 others who interviewed. I didn't feel like I was ever heard when I expressed my emotions, and when I expressed them through self-injury, I usually got negative feedback. I feel Jane has allowed me to be heard, but this time it is through feedback that has contributed to the healthy lifestyle I live with today. God bless you Jane.

Wounded: Vietnam/Iraq Another outstanding book from Dr. Glasser about the real cost of war; "Wounded" identifies the casuality data the current administration doesn't want us to know. More soldiers are losing their limbs then in any war since our civil war. A majority of the wounded returning to America have Traumatic Brain Injuries. The VA medical system is not prepared and is underfunded to care for these returnees. This book is the best arguement for our removing our soldiers from both Iraq and Afganistan as soon as possible. Ronald Glasser is a medical doctor who treated soldiers injured in Viet Nam, and returned to that task with the current wars. His information is first hand, and calls forth a strong response in the reader.

A sober, well-reasoned, "must-read" about the evolving state of combat medicine and the long-term repercussions of war wounds.

Wounded: Vietnam to Iraq author Ronald J. Glasser, M.D., served as an Army hospital physician during the Vietnam War and offers alarming insights and comparisons in military medical experience between the Vietnam War and the current Iraq war. At once both fascinating in its studious examination in how the changing nature of modern battlefields has transformed the job of the medic, from simply keeping a wounded patient alive until a chopper could quickly evacuate to having to prolong life for up to 72 hours, since air superiority has all but vanished in the modern era of urban warfare and readily available technology to shoot down choppers. "The training period for the Combat Medical Specialty was increased from ten to sixteen weeks... The additional weeks of training were devoted to developing the new core skills necessary to keep the severely wounded alive where they were hit, with little chance for immediate evacuation. No more 'patch 'em up and send them off.' This was to be big-time medicine, the city trauma center brought to the battlefield." A sober, well-reasoned, "must-read" about the evolving state of combat medicine and the long-term repercussions of war wounds.

A must read, if you care for a veteran of either Vietnam or Iraq.

After rereading the book 365 Days by Dr. Ronald Glasser, one that this vietnam combat vet found to be both stirring and haunting, I had to get his most recent book.
And I was not disappointed.
If you want to have a feel for those who serve and become casualties for our flag and country, these books are vital additions to your library.

This book is clearly well written and well researched. A unique perspective on the soldier's story. We owe it to them to understand what they are going through.

I have long looked for the true figures about the nature of death in Iraq.
Fortunately the Australian media is slightly better than the pap served up by the media in the country that is causing the sickening mayhem in Iraq and we know only a little of the true monstrousness of this war to bring democracy to the unwashed masses of Iraq. Glasser lays it on the line and spells out, particularly in the chapter Final Diagnosis, the enormity of the American soldier's burden in this conflict. On page 73 he writes that there were 600 ammunition dumps scattered around Iraq when the Shock and Awe invasion ended. There's nothing unexpected in this but the problem happened when none of the Shock and Awe victors policed these dumps and they were cleaned out by the "defeated" Iraqi army. What this means in the reality of ground combat is that there is a virtually unlimited supply of hugely powerful explosives available to mine roads and anywhere else American soldiers find themselves in the horror of Iraq. Glasser goes into medical detail about what happens to middle aged reservists who are caught in these explosions. He talks as the expert he is about the wounds suffered by soldiers caught in an explosion of this huge power. He talks about what 155mm shells hooked to butane gas tanks does to a person's head when it explodes. Because of quick evacuation and superb treatment these poor wounded live but the impact on, particularly the head, causes horrific , lifelasting injuries.

I do not think, because of the media, America and the world in general knows what is happening to American soldiers in Iraq; I believe that the low death rates for US soldiers has led America to tolerate this war more than its true horror would indicate. Glasser's wonderful, readable and understandable book lifts the veil on the terrible price being paid for what has become a cesspool for American youth.

Purchased this book for my son, now almost 3 years old, about a year ago. He loves it. Great pictures and he really likes touching all the boo boos and playing with the band-aid on the front.

Need to ease the trauma of a bloody elbow? Loosen up over the loose skin of a bulging blister? This book is for you!
Who knew scabs and blisters could be so irresistibly touchable? From the delightfully witty-and informative-verse, to the sticky, picky, bubbly, and band-aided catalogue of injuries, this is a must have for parents with a sense of humor and a desire to make every moment a learning experience. We received this as a gift for our toddler. After he got that first scraped knee, we took the book out and opened to the "SCRAPES" page, featuring a teary-eyed girl with a scraped knee. Big deal right?...but on further inspection, the scrape on her knee is in fact a sticky, red "boo boo." We all touched the scrape and screamed with delight as the page clung to our fingers! My son was instantly won over. It is certainly a favorite (not just for him...
The entire book is interactive-you can lift a flap of a cast to see an x-ray of a fractured arm, weave a ribbon to mimic stitches, connect the dots of a rash... you pick the injury, they have created a clever way to discuss how the body heals and what it looks and feels like.

Move over, Pat the Bunny. The Boo Boo Book has arrived. Through this delightfully interactive board book, young children can learn about the various minor mishaps that sometimes befall them. Many pages provide clever ways for children to explore further. For example, under the cast is an x-ray; beneath the hand is a real Band-Aid.

When I read this book to my four-year-old granddaughter, she told true accounts of her own "boo boos". We had a grand time recalling occasions when we had skinned our knees, ended up with blisters on our feet, and bruised our arms. We also talked about being brave when we get hurt. More importantly, The Boo Boo Book provided me with the opportunity to talk about being careful and "playing it safe". Children of all ages will love this welcome addition to their library.

As a pediatrician and a mother, I have been delighted with the Boo Boo Book! My four year-old daughter was given a copy and she is fascinated by this engaging, rhyming tale of bumps and bruises. I like reading it with her because the explanations are clear and kid-oriented. My daughter loves the interactive illustrations. Her favorite is the sticky red "blood" and I think the x-ray of a broken bone under the lift- a- flap cast is extremely cool.

Joy Masoff has hit upon a topic that is truly interesting to kids of all ages--and her rhyming explanations are both educational and entertaining. A great book!

I bought this book more than a decade past at a convention about gifted children. I loved it then and marveled that a boy so young could write such an incredible book, and that there was a publisher so brave and generous to bring it to the public eye. Just recently, January 7, 2003, I revisted this old friend of a book and was even more inspired by its courage and vision than I was all those years ago. I am sure Adam Moore is all grown up now and I pray that he is happy and well. Thank goodness, I now discover via Amazon.com that his terrific book is still available to both kids and adults. This is a great story and one of a boy's triumph over enormous odds and terrible pain to regain his life. Broken Arrow Boy is a triumph of the will and the spirit that people will benefit from reading again and again. This is a book children and their parents should share. Broken Arrow Boy is like an old friend. It calls for many reunions.

This book is incredible to have been written by a young boy. Adam Moore kept a positive attitude through many complications that occured after he fell on a arrow that went into his brain through his eye. He gives details of many medical procedures in a way that is interesting to children. I have read it to second graders every year since I discovered it, and they love it. I use it to encourage them to write about things that happen to them.

Adam's story takes place when we were in 3rd grade in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma. His story touched all the students and we were very impressed with his book. Being a teacher, I like to share stories that touch me with my students. Adam's book is obviously written by a child for children. The students love the fact that they are around the same age Adam was at the time. They also like the idea that a child can actually write a book to be published. It gives them inspiration to be writers themselves.

You know, I have found that being thrust into that world of white (hospitals, nurses, and doctors) has actually increased my quality of life. Sure, I was dealt a rather unfortunate hand, but in my opinion, only recently did I realize this, I am the way I am and I will always be the same person as before. Now, in the minds of children, a character never 'grows up'; however, I have. Now, I write as a 25-year-old associate in college. Since the publication of my book, I have endured over 40+ different surgeries in various parts of my physical body, though my love and compassion for others has not wavered. Hopefully, someday I will be able to fully document my trials and tribulations for anyone interested. For now, I am content in my wheelchair - a result of my most recent surgery - but I am working towards walking again with my cane. For those concerned, my determination shall shine forth and once again I will be the Adam Moore I once was.
