To be honest, this was an enjoyable and quick read. The writing style of the book was not difficult and had an easy flow to it. I did like how Bethany decided to focus the majority of the book around her life pre and post- attack. Only one chapter was really geared towards the actual attack, which wasn't described in much detail at all.

By doing this, she focused on her personal faith in Christ and how that strong bond with her religion and family helped her through the ordeal. Rarely did the book come off as "preachy" or pushing her religious views, except for the ending chapter. This was a nice aspect of the book, because although her faith was a heavy part of the book, it did not discourage me from reading onwards. One part of the book even addressed the fact that many people think that her family may be too religious, but she countered that with the fact that this is just part of her life. Some people may not understand it, and that does not bother her in the least.

It will be interesting to see how my students react to this book. I am asking them the question of the author's purpose for writing the book, and I will be eager to join that discussion. It is a strong lesson about following your drive and determination no matter what the obsticles, but I think they will focus more on the faith aspect of the book and say that trust in Christ was her main objective.

Many of my students watched the news reports and have seen the billboards with Bethany's picture and story advertised, so it is definitely a high interest story for intermediate students. The format of the book is also reader friendly because it is sectioned into shorter chapters.

An Alternative Role Model for Today's Teens

This is good book for any young person looking for inspiration from a positive role model in our modern world of spoiled pop princesses. Bethany has a rather matter of fact attitude to her predicament, taking it in stride. I read it last year on a trip to Oahu where I got a fin to the head and nine stitches, and as I lay there bleeding I thought how horrible it must have been for her and how my problem paled in comparison. While her attitude is based on her strong religious up bring, the message is not overly strong and is fine for any one's beliefs. It does need to be down rated a star for misspelling "Trestles." Shame on the ghost writer and editors for letting such an obvious mistake go: aren't there starving surfers who could have been hired for the job instead?

My daughter needed a book for her school's summer reading project. She picked this book off the list because she'd heard about the author who had her arm bitten off by a shark as an 11 year old, surfing. She was able to get through it quickly and she enjoyed it even though she is not an avid reader.

Soul book forever!!!

At just 13, Bethany Hamilton lost her left arm to a tiger shark, possibly affecting her goals and achievements dramatically in her life forever. But did that stop her from surfing? Of course it didn't! Bethany has been in the water constantly ever since she knew how to swim. She says, surfing is her life and has been since she was three. Her parents have been there for her every step of the way. Bethany has two older brothers, both surfers, and a best friend named Alana, another surfer. She mentioned that without her faith in God she would have never survived and He is the reason she gets up every morning. This book really inspired me to have goals and to achieve and never give up. Bethany Hamilton is a role model to many others and I. I am glad to say that now she is a professional surfer! The sponsor that stuck with her though all the hard times was RipCurl! Bethany is a wonderful girl, daughter, sister and friend to many and I am so glad that I picked up this book and was immediately drawn to it.
Bethany throws her soul into surfing; she was born for the board. She may have lost her arm in the attack, but she could never lose her faith in God. He was and still is her greatest hero and model. I really think that her faith motivated her to get right back in the waves.
Bethany Hamilton's first-hand account of the full-on fight to keep surfing is worth the read all the way. This teenage autobiography would interest any type of reader. I personally think that to everyone who has read this incredible book including me, there is no doubt that this book has made an impact on peoples lives. What a great book.

I LOVE this book it is amazing!

this is the most amazing, powerful, moving book.

don't be afraid to read it because it's poetry. although it is quite poetic, it reads like a novel. you'll be able to understand everything on a level you weren't aware could happen in literature. that was my experience, anyways. i felt EVERYTHING that eireann felt. like i said, it was powerful.

it's one of those books that you pick up and you cannot put down until it is completely read. i've read it many times, over and over again. the first time i read it, i read it all in one sitting. then at the end i just sat in a daze and immediately wanted to read it again.

i always go back to this book.

it was an immediate favorite. i'd recommend it to anyone.

it's inspiring.

This book covers some of the darkest places a human mind can go, and the key to it's success is that it does so without preaching or looking down upon the problems it discusses. From Anorexia to drug use to suicide, this is not light reading. And despite the fact that it is written in poetry, it's not confusing. Eileann begins the book with what seems like the obvious starting point: The onset of her anorexia. She discusses her starvation, her motivation, her multiple trips to the hospital. She does this in a fresh manner, something that feels true, and not like something someone decided anorexia feels like. She also brings another aspect into this book which had a considerable amount of personal appeal to me: Love. A high school boyfriend who she loved, it seems, more than anything. When he finally attempts to take his own life with a gun to the head and fails, she's on the other side of the hospital bed. And that changes everything. She talks about how, for the first time, she cooked for a man, even though she only brought yogurt for herself. And eventually she makes the decision that if he will live, then so will she. This book is essentially a love story, between a girl and a boy, and between a girl and her obsession. It is a dark and haunting read, but I recommend it to anyone who enjoys reading such novels. It is truly a work of art.

An Honest Voice

"The nurse who's weighed me each / weekday morning for three months finally / speaks. She says Three digits. She says / Good job. And I feel like the particular hog / who's been pointed out at the trough." In our life, we always try to look perfect for someone, whether it be a boy, a friend, or a family member. Eireann Corrigan's memoir "You Remind Me of You" explains her descent into a whirlwind of pain, agony, and heartbreak.
Suffering from a severe case of anorexia and a boyfriend, Daniel, who is recovering from a failed suicide attempt, Eireann discusses these issues through poetry stanzas with a truth that is unlike any other. Her voice is honest and makes me feel like I am experiencing the same things she is. Even though some words are a bit challenging and the poetry verses could be confusing, she speaks with such reality that you can see her pain written on the pages.
The people in this book are real and they portray themselves in a shocking, heart-wrenching manner. This book shows what happens when anorexia takes over your life. Eireann doesn't sugarcoat any of her problems - she wants people to know what she went through and the exact results that came from it. This book can reach out to the age group of 14 and up. Teens need to know the truth and the dangers of just how bad anorexia can get. I have experienced a very minor case of it, and after reading this book I know that I could have never survived if it had gotten that severe.
Another book that relates to teens and self-image issues is "Crank" by Ellen Hopkins. It discusses what can happen when a straight-A, goodie-two-shoes teenage girl transforms into a monster. Eireann is a new writer who has only written two published books. "You Remind Me of You" and "Splintering," which is her first novel. "You Remind Me of You" is definitely a 5-star book. I couldn't put it down when I was reading it. You want to know what happens to Erieann as she continues down her spiral of guilt, depression, and anorexia. You are hooked right away on the first page, as Erienne describes how she feels about herself and her first love, Daniel:
Right now, I weigh eighty-four pounds. My skin is yellowing / again and each morning my hair fills the shower's drain. Later, / I will look back and wonder who let me in that room, but at this minute / I'm remembering our first date, how you told me you couldn't imagine / marrying anyone who wasn't Jewish and I told you / just as earnestly, / as gently, that I couldn't imagine getting through high school / without killing myself. And you said Well that gives us three years.

I would recommend this book to anyone who knows what it's like to deal with a suffering loved one or self-esteem issues. Eireann reaches out to teens and writes about true life events, and how adolescence can be both painful and beautiful.

I first read YOU REMIND ME OF YOU because I loved Billy Merrell's TALKING IN THE DARK so much... and I have to say that these PUSH books are just great. The poetry they have for "kids" just sucks and I hate what they have for adults. But Billy and Eirean are better than of of that.

I hope that Eirean writes MORE BOOKS. I just bought SPLINTERING and hope it is as good as it looks. I love the cover!

Anyway, though. IF you haven't bought this book, buy it already.

My son received a severe brain injury in a car accident almost two years ago. He has made a remarkable recovery. However although I ask him how he feels he can't always tell me, says " I just want to be back to normal" I have really wanted to know exactly what goes on in their brain during the recovery -which of course is on going. This book was just delightful. I loved Kara's honest comments and the way she expressed her feelings. My son does not want to read it but my daughter-in-law does.
I have to say though, for all of you parents out there who's child has been diagnosed with a severe brain injury, don't despair, Kara's mild brain injury seems a lot more severe in her recovery than my son's!
Thank you Kara for a wonderful insight into the feelings of a brain injured person. Best of luck for a continued recovery.

A delightful book which takes the author from a tragedy and life change to making her new life the best it can be. A wonderful message for those of us having a family member who is a recent traumatic brain injury survivor. It is written with humor but with a valuable message. The chapters are short and written in a manner our TBI survivor is able to read and comprehend it. Thank you for this book.

A great read for a survivor or family member of TBI. Slightly larger print and easy to follow story line. This book puts you in touch with the TRUELY important things in life. Showing some of possitive and humorious bumps in her new learning curve keeps this book from reading like a text book. Wow does it feel better knowing that others share similar experincies.
I have purchased several of these, one for my daughter, and a couple for friends to help them understand me now.
If you ever get the chance to meet Kara DO IT, she is uplifting to speak with.

Very easy to read; chapters are very digestible. The chapters continue to build on one another rather than taking one topic and then dropping it for the rest of the text.

I can't believe they made a huge thick expensive book that is only made by Paperback. They should create a Hard Cover because I always carry and drop my Emergency Care during training and Emergency that can ruin the book easily. In regards to the CD, the CD has lack of information. I am expecting that the CD composed of all chapters that is detailed so that students can learn in reading and listening from the CD.

The book has a lot of useful information. However, the CD has lack of informations and the durability of this book is weak.

This is a must-have book for therapists, family members and the victim of TBI, as well. It is easy to read for layman, as well as most informative for the practicioner.

So many unusual incidents and behaviours are revealed to be "normal" TBI reactions to common occurances.

I highly recommend this book to friends, family and the injured person. It helps you realize that you are not going crazy and others have your same symptoms--even symptoms you didn't realize were due to the brain injury. The writers should receive an award for this book.

The factual material - including medical information and Internet resources - is largely outdated. In my opinion the book should be updated or removed from current printing. It seems unfair to sell health care consumers who seek information on treating brain injury with factual information that is not useful.

Take this book as an understanding of the sciences as they existed fifteen years ago.

Dan Baldyga has written a book that shines a bright light on the shadowy world of personal injury auto claims. The insurance companies are the ones that keep policyholders and claimants in the dark. They try their best to control the claims process. For the most part, they succeed...UNLESS a person buys books like this one. This book is somewhat wordy, but thorough, and that thoroughness is what you need. Great job, Dan!

I am 50 years old and until my accident I have never had a wreck. I bought this book on Amazon.com about a year ago and followed it religiously to settle my claim. It worked. Thought I'd share this with others.

Also, the book helped me see additional damages that I didn't recognize previously. Just that alone would have been worth the price of the book. But the author's Base Formula showed me how to figure out how much my claim was worth, and that saved me thousands. This is one book I won't be loaning out, just in case I have another wreck.

I just finished reading this book which my mother got me for Christmas. I had an accident a few weeks ago and was beside myself with worry over it. I didn't get hurt badly but my neck and back hurt a lot the next morning. My car wasn't so fortunate, though.

I did lose time from work and had to rent a car. The worse part was not knowing what I had to do next. After reading this book it answered so many of the questions I had. There's no way I would have known about some of them since I never had an accident before.

The only thing I didn't see in the book, unless I missed it, is whether I should include my medical bills in the formula since they are going to be paid by the insurance company. The accident was the fault of the driver behind me.

I don't know how anybody can ever begin to try and settle their own claim without a book like this. There's SO many things you need to know.

Someone in a review below said that the book is only 50 pages. My book is 140 pages! And there's a ton of information in it that tells me exactly what I need to do. I'm so grateful for this book.

My wife and I purchased this book some time ago as we prepared to settle our claim.

She had also bought a few others online and we spent quite a bit of time reading them all.

Each one had some helpful information, however, we both felt this book was the most concise and had everything we needed to know. I especially liked the fact that this particular author did not talk down to the readers, nor did he use the difficult to understand legal terms that some of the others did.

He took us step by step through the process, explaining what we needed to do at every turn.

Neither my wife or I had ever been through this wrenching process before. When we met with our adjuster we both felt a lot more confident thanks to this book.

I'm pleased to report that we just settled our claim for the amount we figured out with this book. It took some haggling, both on the phone and in person, but we held fast as the author said to do and we persevered.

For the benefit of others who find themselves like we did, struggling to learn the in's and out's of a claims process, I would recommend this book highly.

This is a good basic book and a good place to start if you have any kind of musculoskeletal aches and pains. The book is organized by body part (for example, the ankle, the elbow) and tells you how the area works, what can go wrong with it, and how to take care of it. The book ends with lots of exercises for each body part, which are clearly illustrated. A great first place to start if you have any nagging problems you'd like to try and get rid of, I think most readers will find it very helpful. Also notable is their other book, Age Defying Fitness: Making the Most of Your Body for the Rest of Your Life.

This book is great for anyone looking for comprehensive stretches for all muscle groups (including the jaw). However, the substantive chapters are quite repetitive and after the first chapter or so, do not offer much new information. Nevertheless, I purchased the book because I really wanted a dictionary of stretches and this provided me with exactly what I was looking for. Also, the stretches are very specific, requiring straight-backed chairs, foot stools, etc. I do most stretches without the specifics recommended in the book and still find that they work quite well.

I admit that I knew very little of Oscar Wilde when I chose this particular book, at random. What an excellent choice for a novice as well as a Wilde devotee! Not only did I appreciate the tragic love story of Oscar, Constance and Bosie, but I also gained an insight into Victorian mores and political machinations. We apparently can't claim the corner on the market of corrupt zealots.
If you haven't read Mr. McKenna's work, you must. In the biography arena, this book is beyond the realm.

McKenna has carved his own niche among the Wilde biographies by concentrating on Oscar's homosexuality (too often marginalized or avoided by other writers), with emphasis on his long relationship with Bosie; McKenna considers theirs a great love affair, but it appears to have been something along the lines of codependency. It's quite remarkable how much detail is known about Oscar's antics through letters, journals and books, maybe too much, since this long read is at times a bit tedious as we move through one young man after another. McKenna has a couple of annoying habits as a writer -- all the young men couldn't have been quite as "breathtakingly" attractive as described, he makes a lot of suppositions about what someone must have thought, or might have done, and he's a bit melodramatic with the "but he would find out all too soon" chapter endings.

But these are quibbles. The book is important is several ways. Above all, it portrays Wilde as one of a group of early advocates of gay rights, a fervent believer that society and the law should treat homosexuals with equality and respect. It also provides a fascinating "decoding" of Wilde's most famous works by explaining the double, ie. homosexual, meaning of words, phrases and behavior on the part of his characters, who were often based on real people. The book paints a vivid picture of the seamy side of London's "Uranian" underground of rent boys, petty thieves and blackmailers and the "respectable" men who took their pleasure there. And it delves into his marriage, the ill-fated consequence of having to protect his reputation from the circling vultures.

Wilde is a fascinating, maddening subject, so sure of his own superiority that he considered himself above the law and the strictures of society, making him ultimately the instrument of his own self-destruction. This book will be of interest primarily to Wilde junkies and people interested in the sexual aspect of his life, but it should be read in conjunction with other bios, lest one get the impression that the great man did little but go at it like a rabbit.

"I find it harder and harder every day to live up to my blue china," Oscar Wilde confessed while he was a student at Oxford (p. 14).

For anyone who has visited his lipstick-kissed tomb at the Père Lachaise Cemetery in Paris, Wilde's "secret life" is really no secret. Wilde (1854-1900) was primarily an Irish playwright, novelist, and poet, known for his brazen wit ("Little boys should be obscene and not heard," p. 257), which made him one of the greatest celebrities of late Victorian London. Following Wilde's death, his friend, Frank Harris, wrote a biography, Oscar Wilde: His Life and Confessions, which was followed by H. Montgomery Hyde's 1975 biography, Oscar Wilde: A Biography, and more recently Richard Ellmann's 1987 meticulous work, Oscar Wilde. Whereas these earlier, excellent biographies focused primarily on Wilde's literary achievements and dealt with his sexuality only in passing, Neil McKenna's The Secret Life of Oscar Wilde examines Wilde's sexuality and sexual behavior in detail--and at times, in graphic detail.

Most biographers concur that Wilde was introduced to homosexuality in 1885, but McKenna speculates--in charting Wilde's "journey" to find his true sexual self (p. xi)--Wilde was first aware of his homosexuality much earlier when he kissed another boy at age 16. After his arrival at Oxford in 1874, Wilde experienced passionate, romantic feelings for Greek beauty (i.e., cultivated, youthful, "fair," "slim" choirboys) (pp. 6-7), but was drawn sexually towards rougher boys. Following his visit to America in 1882, Wilde boasted, "I have the kiss of Walt Whitman still on my lips." In his struggle against his sexual feelings for young men, Wilde attempted to "cure" his sexuality in 1884 by marrying Constance Lloyd (the daughter of Queen's Counsel Horace Lloyd) and by fathering two sons, Cyril (1885) and Vyvyan (1886). But he continued to have regular sexual relationships with Robert Baldwin Ross, Lord Alfred Douglas ("Bosie"), and random teenage boys, whom he would meet in bars or brothels, culminating in his May, 1895 conviction and two-year imprisonment for "gross indecency." Later, after remarking, "my wallpaper and I are fighting a duel to the death. One or the other of us has to go" (p. 463), Wilde died in Paris, knowing that "he was a martyr in an epic struggle for the freedom of men to love men" (p. 465).

Drawn from interviews, letters, memoirs, journals, and Wilde's own writings--although McKenna's controversial but highly readable biography has been criticised for being too speculative, it nevertheless succeeds in bringing Wilde to life as a literary genius, a dandy, a pagan, an "extreme aesthete" who attempted to live his life by burning hard like a gemlike flame (p. 13), and as a gay Victorian outcast.

I bought this book after reading a rave reviews in The Washington Post.
It is everything that it promised to be: brave, fresh, exciting, and
scrupulously researched. I have read most other biographies of Oscar
over the years and really thought that there was little left to say.
McKenna's biography has proved me wrong by proving not a wealth of new
and exciting material, but also a wealth of new insights and
interpretations. I cannot recommend this book too highly - it is a
beautiful and magical read. At the best part of 600 pages, it's a long
book, but for me it wasn't long enough. Incidentally, I don't
understand the comments of the latest reviewer about footnotes. In my
US hardback edition there are nearly 60 pages of notes which
scrupulously source every quote.

Wolkodoff takes an analytical approach to golf that I've not found anywhere else. The book is a little dated but it's a golf-specific book that's not trying to sell any specific program but challenges golfers to a comprehensive fitness and nutrition program. Wolkodoff directs readers to resistance exercises, stretching exercies and a workout program to maximize the benefits to golfers and the type of muscle strength and fitness golfers need. Buy this book if you are interested in a thorough golf-specific fitness regimen.

I decided my golf needed some extra power, so I searched the books and gave this one a try. I was on the Body for Life program, switchted to this after 3 weeks of that, and not only is my golf better but I lost an extra 10 pounds. I found the nutrition section a good overview and was well worth the price of the book in that I was able to balance out my meals better and I got some good ideas about how to eat on the course(threw out the gatorade and got some bars with a little bit of fat). Another thing was this was the only golf exercise book that really bothered to list references for the ideas and information, so I felt the author really put some thought and time into this.

Good coverage of golf and muscles used in the swing. I was easily able to use the exercises and training plan at the gym. Also, I didn't realize how important aerobic training was for golf, so that section got me moving in that direction.

Millions of fitness books litter the shelves and I have read them all. This book is the reference book when it comes to fitness. While you're "in season", you want to keep your fitness levels but yet be able to play the game at optimal levels. Yet in the "off-season", you can improve your game by building strength in the golf muscles. This book gives you programs for the entire year, even a "pre-season" workout. One of the most informative golf books I have ever purchased.

Add a couple more stars above. Not only have I read Neil Wolkodoff's Physical Golf, but I have had the honor of working with Neil personally with my own training. I strongly believe Neil is giving me the conditioning that will put me at an advantage over the thousands of pros that have the dream of playing on the PGA Tour. It takes a team to drive a player to that elite level of golf. Neil Wolkodoff's book inspired me to make a change in my conditioning that will definitely improve my physical well-being, which will ultimately give me a mental as well as a physical advantage over my competition. When you look good you feel good, and when you feel good, you play good golf. I am exempt on the Canadian PGA Tour and am training with Neil to get ready for the 2000 season. Read Physical Golf like I did and watch out for me on the US PGA Tour in 2001.
