Injuries Books

I have owned-A Sigh of Relief- for many years, I find it easy to read and easy to understand. A must for anyone with children!!

This book is great. I am going to be an athletic trainer. This book has provided me with many answers to symptoms and injuries. If you are going into training or watching from the side-lines, this is a great book to read to become familiar with the symptoms of injuries.

This book would be very interesting to anyone who has read Christopher Nowinski's "Head Games" on concussions caused by football and wants more dimensions on the effects of brain injuries on the lives of patients.

I actually read Ms. Hernandez' book first and became so intrigued with the nature of brain injury problems that I was motivated to purchase Mr. Nowinski's book when it was published.

The author, Maria Hernandez, writes from the personal experience of a nearly fatal driving accident. The accident made her hospitalized and helpless for weeks, and then left her with the struggle of an excruciatingly difficult rehabilitative process which she is still going through. The book is a series of portraits of victims of Traumatic Brain Injury (accepted acronym is TBI) struggling with their lives. The descriptive dynamics in the opening page were so strong that I felt shivers through my mind as though I were going through the horror myself. Ms. Hernandez is a brilliant lady, and her intelligence was fortunately preserved despite extensive trauma to her head; the power of her mind is readily seen in her book. She has become involved in programs in Florida promoting understanding of brain injury and development of programs promoting research and treatment. She is currently teaching at a local college in Miami, and has outstanding ratings from her students and the school's administration.

The book deeply explores all sides of muscle physiology,and it is written in a way that readers with a reasonable knowlege of muscle embryogenesis steps, as well as anatomy and physiology will be delighted to read. I deeply advise this book and thank Peter Tiidus for the effort of launching this wonderfull production. Pedro Sepulveda

Sports injuries are all too common, but, thanks to this book, many of them can be treated and prevented. Ms. Sobell has outlined the book into easy-to-understand chapters, covering injuries literally from head to toe. If you are athletic at all, it would do you well to have this book handy.

Many pediatricians and pediatrics residents own Smith's Recognizable Patterns of Malformation. However, this text is not as widely used and discussed. It's a great addition to "...Patterns of Malformation". Mechanical deformation patterns often overlap with malformation sequences, and the text is careful to separate the two and focus on deformations secondary to fetal constraint, fetal position and presentation.

Many issues pertinent to general and subspecialty pediatric practice are covered. On a newborn nursery rotation, I used the book repeatedly when encountering various deformations in newborns including: calcaneovalgus, metatarsus adductus, talipes equinovarus, DDH, polydactyly (pre-axial and post-axial). The pictures are color and of high quality. Each deformity is defined. Epidemiology, work-up, management and treatment strategies are discussed.

A great addition to your library if you work in a pediatric field.

The author basically deals with a five year period in his life in which he has to deal with the trauma of a serious injury to his brain. The frustration, despair, grief and ultimate coming to terms of the different person he has become is quite moving. Although, he is surrounded by the support of family and friends, it is his renewed faith in God in which Keith finds the strength to accept his fate. Whether you have suffered from a brain injury, or have other physical traumas that have put you through great mental anguish, I would highly recommend this book. From speechless to a man with a motivating story to tell!

The work provides guidance on coping strategies for
patients and their families faced with chronic
spinal cord issues. The thrust of the volume seeks
to get patients reconnected to life meaningfully.
The book points out that this generation is more
patient and tolerant than previous ones with regard
to spinal injuries.

The challenges to patients are multi-dimensional.
For instance, psychological and emotional issues are
involved. Each case requires its own mix of support
systems. Coping strategies may vary. Patients often
divorce due to the insurmountable difficulties.

The author does a good job of defining spinal cord
injuries and practical coping strategies for the
management of the same. The book is priced reasonably.

Since my SCI in May of 1999 we have accumulated a pile of books dealing with various aspects of SCI. At 1/10th the price, this book is many times better than any of the others. Their down to earth approach leads you from the point of injury until the day you make the transition from patient to the new you. Outstanding!
