As a general pediatrician I have found this to be one of the most practical texts in my library. Every orthopedic disorder found in pediatrics is covered, yet not so exhaustively as to be tiresome. Just the right amount of information, geared towards the non-orthopedist.

This book provides an excellent description of the underlying disorder and a practical, teambased approach. I would recommended it to both speech-language pathologists in a school and medical setting

Essential information for suffering musicians
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2002-09-26
Before Repetitive Strain Injuries became well-known to the world through the widespread use of the computer keyboard, musicians were suffering from them. I had persistent tendonitis for several years, and this book was the best resource I ever found--once I did, I knew things my doctor didn't know! Although I am writing this review as a guitarist, this book addresses the overuse injuries that afflict all instrumentalists, singers, and dancers, and even includes a chapter on the "Psychological Aspects of the Development of Exceptional Young Performers and Prodigies."

...I recommend you try a good library. There's no way I could do justice to the wealth of information in this book (half of which, it's true, will probably be useless to any given reader--I skipped the chapter on "Foot and Ankle in Dance"), but let me distill a few simple tips (mainly for guitarists like me) until you can track down a copy. Injuries to guitarists (and string players) are often caused by playing with the wrists too bent. Guitarists should find guitars with small bodies--I recommend an Ovation with a shallow bowl. (Violinists and violists can find violins or violas with cutaways similar to those on some acoustic guitars.) Light gauge strings, a low action, and a neck that's not too wide at the nut are preferable. Straps should be wide and well-padded to best distribute the weight of the guitar. Picks can be wrapped in tape (the edge you hold only) to make them easier to hold without changing their sound.

All musicians should try limiting their caffeine (as my OT told me) and their sugar (as my masseuse told me). You should ABSOLUTELY call a doctor (probably a hand specialist, depending on your problem) to evaluate you--it can be very frustrating to try to get over the sorts of mysterious pains you will feel on your own.

As one who was driven to buy it by desperation, I can tell you that it is the Bible of its subject, and consulting a copy will reward you richly.

More practical than any other PI book. Forms, Forms, Forms!

We all know that billions of dollars are paid every year in personal injury settlements. But why aren't you getting yours? The answer is that you probably don't know the magic letters to send and how to fill out the "trick" forms the insurance company sends you. Well, to John Tarantino does, and he shares them with YOU.

In order to settle a personal injury claim without going to court, you need to know how "to paper" a file - and what buzzwords to use. All the forms you need are in this book. And it comes with a handy diskette, making rekeying unnecessary. What could be easier? Whether you're a personal injury claimant - or a lawyer tired of referring these cases out to your friends and want to learn the game - this book is a must have!

This book is fabulous! I recommend it for anyone interested in becomming an Emergency Rescuer, EMT, or Paramedic. The author does an excellent job of explaining body systems and the impact trauma can have on them. It's in-depth, but not overly technical. It is easy to read and understand. I have learned a lot from this book in a short amount of time. It explains step by step the assessment, diagnosis and difinative care needed for a wide range of injuries, as well as the level of care given depending on your level of training. It was recommended to me by a Paramedic, and I have recommended it to others! You won't be disappointed! BUY THIS BOOK!

Ideal for graduate students in bone health
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2002-04-13
This is the first time I have seen a book dedicated to exercise and bone. Usually bone books are about medication, biology, etc. and then they pay lipservice to exercise. The authors are to be congratulated on providing a very readable, beautifully illustrated and yet authoritative text for those of us doing Master's degrees, Honors degrees, or even PhDs in the field of bone research. I imagine that graduate students all over the US are eternally grateful for having all this information in one place. It really clears up those comples issues such as how to interpret DXA scans, why results of different exercise studies differ and the problems of stress fractures, amenorrhea etc.

It even has research suggestions for a wide variety of students - see the later chapters.

My boyfriend is a fitness leader and he loves it because it provides evidence-based exercise programs for women and men of different ages and abilities.

Well done authors - thanks from the bottom of my heart!
