This book covers topics that many drivers don't usually think about. Eating right, Endurance, Racers Psychology, Fending off Heat and Exhaustion, Quickest ways to recover from injuries etc. "Fine Tuning" the vehicle is usual top priority in motorsports, maybe this book will get race drivers to appreciate the benefits of "Fine Tuning" themselves too. Nice job.

Three Kids in a Hospital
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2007-09-07
Review Date: 2007-09-07
Logan Kemp's rugby life is thrown off course by a condition that means he's in the hospital now, unable to eat what he wants. There he meets perfectionist Cleopatra Jones, who can eat whatever she wants, but has an eating disorder and considers food her enemy. The irony vibrating between these two characters is enriched by the introduction of a third patient, a younger boy named Kip who's waiting for a kidney transplant. KC Dyer frames her story using a hospital teacher's notebook in which these young patients keep their journals. Logan is critical of Cleo at first, but after he starts sneaking a peek at her journal pages, he gradually begins to care about her.
The plot starts with the struggle to survive physically, but it moves on to Cleo's escape from the hospital. Kip helps her with her getaway and Logan follows her to make sure she's all right. But Cleo has a destination, and the road trip ends up taking on a whole new meaning for the two teens.
Note that the journal entries and prose passages alternate with memos back and forth between doctors, parents, and teachers, giving us a more complete context for our main characters' situation. Weaving all of this together can't have been easy, but Dyer makes it read effortlessly.
This story might have been too heavy if it weren't for the brisk, friendly pace along with Logan's wry voice--which provides a nice counterpoint to Cleo's earnest tones and Kip's younger style. Logan is probably the strongest character. He is frustrated and fairly obnoxious, but is nevertheless very appealing. It's nice to see hospitalized teens portrayed as real kids rather than as one-dimensional saints.
By the way, the age range listed for this book is 9-12, but I would have said 12-15 was a better target, or at least 9 and up.
Any Young Adult reader will enjoy Ms. Zephyr's Notebook for both the characters and the story, but it should have particular power for teens who have either been hospitalized or who are battling eating disorders. You may never meet Abbie Zephyr in these pages, but you'll be glad you took the time to read through her notebook.

I am a junior high school libarian and recently bought the entire Body Focus set for our library. We needed a new set of books that covered all the body systems. I chose this one because the format is perfect for my junior high students: Eye-catching cover, full-color pictures and in-depth diagrams on each page, easy to follow, and geared to interest the age level of our students. I especially like the "What can go wrong with..." section in the back of each book and the glossary. After looking at several series before purchasing, I really found this to be the best one out there for my students.

This is a fantastic book, and an important book for musicians suffering from overuse injuries. I am an injured musician, and have been in "recovery" for over a year now. I wish I'd found out about this book before I was ever injured. It not only acts as an aid in recovery, but also as a preventative means. It is easy to read, well-organized, and not only provides accurate and extremely helpful information, but also provides information on other relevant and useful resources. I have been telling my family and friends about it. And anyone I meet in the future who suffers from these kinds of injuries, I will be sure to point them in the direction of this book. A must have for any serious musician.

Wow! What an interesting, informative and revealing book! Ms. Williams' memoir reveals her struggles, frustrations, highs, lows and everything in between so beautifully and candidly. There were parts of her book that brought tears to my eyes and parts of her book that made me shout "woo-hoo" with her! It's the PERFECT book for someone who has sustained a traumatic brain injury and for anyone who loves someone who sustained a brain injury. I definitely give Ms. Williams a double thumbs up!

Natural First Aid will help you to care for others with the natural remedies you have on hand. The key is to stay calm, move quickly, and know what to do. If you need to arm yourself with information for both emergency and non-emergency situations this is the book. After reading it I have come to the conclusion that it is one of those indispensable reference books everyone should have. It's definitely a book to have in the First Aid kit when camping. Brigitte Mars also tells us the most important items to stock in a natural first-aid kit for your car, backpack, and yes ladies even in your handbag.
Do you know that cayenne pepper can stop bleeding? Or that garlic can alleviate a toothache? Or that honey can soothe a burn?
I was impressed with NATURAL FIRST AID. It's easy to read and understand and there is nothing extreme about the natural remedies. I highly recommend it to everyone.
