I tried reading this book the first time and only understood about 20% of what i was reading. So I stopped, bought and read the book Physiology of Sport and Exercise before reading this one, believe me it makes a big difference. This is an advanced book with advanced terminology, but damn is it thorough. This first few chapters are boring because they mostly talk about the locomotion involved with walking, the spinal cord and nervious system. But when it gets into the skeletal muscle chapters, it get very interesting. I advise anyone who plans on reading this to go through it slowly and highlight or underline the important sentences. Now i probably understand 95% of what I am reading.

Helpful Votes: 15 out of 15 total.

This book was found to be extremely helpful in development of a new aquatic facility for the developmentally disabled. It is a good assistance source in identification of program focus with excellent and clear suggestions for specific populations. Additionally, it offers ideas for practical applications with issues such as transfers, emergency procedures, and facility modifications. I love it, use it frequently as a reference, and refer to it in teaching new staff and university student Interns! GREAT!

THE Official Book on Self-Injury
Helpful Votes: 5 out of 5 total.
Review Date: 2007-09-16
There is no better book on the market on the subject of self-injury.

This work provides a well-rounded culmination of explanation, conceptualization, supportive research, and applicable tips for the frontline responder.

D'Onofrio helps us to understand the inner world of the traumatized child, who can later become the self-injuring adolescent. He articulately puts the reader in touch with the pain and complexity of sufferers and the people who surround them. Readers are provided with an opportunity to endure a mere taste of the numbness or "deadness" that often drives self-injurers to inflict pain on themselves.

The later chapters discuss how to best help self-injuring individuals through a firm stance of empathy and clear boundaries combined with useful suggestions and steps to follow so as to best support the needs of the adolescent. D'Onofrio eloquently conveys his profound expertise and understanding to all -- clinicians, parents, as well as novice learners.

After I was in my accident, I looked everywhere to find information about whiplash injuries that wasn't a boring medical text. Advanced Whiplash Care was awesome! It walked me through the biomechanics of whiplash injuries, gave me information about what I can expect during my recovery, and even gave me a bunch of exercises and stretches that I could do to quicken my recovery. Best of all, it was written in an easy-to-understand conversational way. I highly recommend it!!!!

Highly Informative
Helpful Votes: 5 out of 5 total.
Review Date: 2007-01-09
I am an RN who works in a long term facility. Recently, we have had several young patients who have suffered spinal cord injuries. As a nurse, my job is also to give unbiased information to patients. I purchased this book to become better informed of alternative treatments that I may discuss with these patients. I found it incredibly useful and informative-- especially when the medical community says "there is nothing else you can do". There are many other treatment alternatives. There is no cure, but if I can help steer someone towards relieving some painful symptoms, then I have done my job. Written well enough, that I, in fact, have given it to several patients and their family members to read as well.
