I had the privilege of not only reading this book, but also listening to Janet speak and then receiving a full assessment from her (including gait, flexibility, training analysis). She knows her stuff! I have been mostly injury free for the past year since meeting Janet. I bounce back quicker from minor injuries and generally feel better and stronger when I run. Janet's flexibility, strength, and training knowledge are straight forward, easy to understand and follow, and are useful in every day life, not just in running. As we age, I think there's nothing more important than maintaining our mobility and the exercises in this book definitely help with that! I highly recommend to anyone, not just runners, but runners should definitely read!!!

I am a 61-year old woman who walks for fitness. In reading this book I found lots of information to enable me to become more flexible and able to walk without pain. I suffer from Plantar Fasciitis and found the exercises and advice in this book to be most helpful in dealing with the problem. There is also invaluable help and advice for buying the correct shoes for walking as well as running.
I love walking and with the information supplied in this book am better equiped to wisely choose shoes and with proper exercise and preparation have been walking pain free.
I highly recommend this book for anyone of any age who is interested in building strength and flexibility. The pictures and descriptions of exercises are easy to understand, clear and helpful....in other words, "Not just for Runners".

This was the collection of stories that helped me find my voice as a writer. While reading Grass Fires, it became clear to me how important it is to tell your story in a patient and relaxed manner. Let the reader quietly observe the story's characters as the events unfold; nothing dramatic or spectacular or shocking needs to occur to hook the reader, so long as your voice is honest and observant. I was amazed, and still am, at Mr. Gerber's ability to tell a simple story that, I know as a writer, is extremely difficult to pull off. These are simple stories about everyday people, going about their everyday lives, while dealing with those little complications that keep us reading.

Welcome to Brainard -- You're really going to like it here.

I have read, re-read, and re-read Grass Fires. It is one of the few short-story collections where I have savored every sentence. Each story captures you from the first paragraph, drawing you deeper and deeper into each character as Dan Gerber peels away the layers. The descriptions are crisp and unique. Dan Gerber, I am sorry to say, is one of America's best kept secrets.

P.S. Grass Fires is currently out of print, but well worth the search. And, no, I will not sell my copy!

I can't understand why this book is no longer in print. I bought it soon after I suffered a severe spinal cord injury. This book describes so many ways that someone with a SCI can remain active, from sailboating to downhill skiing, handcycling, flying a glider, traveling, mountain climbing, sex, etc, etc, etc... It also gives the current state of medical research in stem cell therapy. It gives phone numbers and web site addresses to the experts where you can get more information and the book itself is FULL of practical information (for example, what to do if you need to urinate during a long airplane flight). I've mentored other new SCI patients and loaned out my copy of this book and found this to be an indispensible resource. It answers basic questions that aren't covered by rehab therapists.

an excellent resource and/or text for athletic trainers
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 1999-04-14
I have used many sports medicine books, including Arnheim and Booher, and this is the book that I continue to use the most. Includes thorough etiologies, pathologies, signs and symptoms along with management skills that every athletic trainer needs. Great illustrations and photographs. My copy is literally held together with trainer's tape because I and my students use it so much. There is an excellent study guide that accompanies this book and it would be great if Amazon could offer it. The ISBN number is 0-683-00176-0 if that helps anyone.

Very well organized; great anatomy illustrations.

Years ago when I took my first athletic training course, I used Arnheim's book. It was all I had known until this book was published. I am currntly teaching an introductory athletic training class and am using this text book. I feel this book is much better organized and does a better job in the injury and rehabilitation explanations. It also makes very good use of anatomy illustrations, tables and figures. I would recommend this book over Arnheim in a heart beat.

Sorely needed schematic atlas
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2008-01-31
Wow. This is an excellent investment for MSK radiologists. This book is a schematic atlas of anatomy and pathology. There are some basic MRI images for anatomy at the beginning of the tome, but by and large, this is all illustrations. This has beautiful LARGE format illustrations of practically everything you could every imagine in MSK imaging. In particular, the detailed anatomy of the small parts (fingers/hand, forefoot, toes) is excellent. The section on meniscal tears is really gorgeous. Also, each joint (at the beginning) has the depiction of color coded nerve anatomy (life saver). Also, there's kind of a cool like section at the beginning that are thumbnails of all of the major processes/entities in a particular joint. Very, very easy as a quick reference.

At first, I thought it was just the images from the 2 volume text, but it looks like more than 1/2 of the images are new. Which says a lot, given the huge numbers of images/schematics/illustrations in this book and the revised "red book". Of those that are duplicates, I like the ones in this book better (larger, better color tone, etc). This is just a very well finished appearance. Obviously the publisher cared about the quality of the finished print product (so rare these days).

At first the very large size and format of the book and images might startle you. But, after getting used to it, you'll wonder why more text books don't have better images like these. Dr. Stoller has done it once again. Kudos ...

What's next? 3T MR atlas?

If you've just had major surgery or gone through cancer treatments, you probably now find yourself in the Healing Zone. Your primary goal is to heal your body as quickly and easily as possible. Super Healing can help.

Dr. Silver, a physiatrist (doctor specializing in rehabilitation medicine), will help you put together your own Super Healing plan, incorporating eight healing strategies designed to maximize healing.

Physical goals include getting proper exercise and not tiring your body unnecessarily with chores that drain you but don't contribute to healing. They also include getting proper nutrition, especially those foods that specifically heal whatever problem you're currently facing.

Proper rest is also important, and working with your doctor to alleviate pain will help to ensure you can get at least eight hours of uninterrupted sleep each night.

In addition to caring for your body, proper mental and emotional care is important. While Dr. Silver understands it's not always easy to keep a positive mental attitude when you're not feeling well, there are certain steps you can take to try not to let yourself get too down.

Getting appropriate emotional needs met by the people around you can help, also. So can connecting to your spiritual needs, whatever your faith.

When all of these elements are brought together into a plan, comprised of short and long term goals, healing is accelerated. Dr. Silver has used this plan with many of her patients and also for herself, as a cancer survivor. If you follow it, she assures you that you'll have an easier trip through the Healing Zone.

Super Healing is a Super Book!

Imagine you are a person whose life has been upended by illness or accident and you are struggling to return to optimum health and life quality. But you don't know where to turn for reliable scientifically grounded advice. Now imagine that a wonderful young physician specialist in rehabilitation medicine is going to sit down with you and go through a step by step process for you to reach your goals. You won't have to imagine that this physician has herself toured the path of recovery (from breast cancer) as she has already described that in her After Cancer Treatment: Heal Faster, Better, Stronger which won her the American Cancer Association's prestigious Lane Adams Quality of Life Award. Now, Dr. Silver has returned to see that the Super Healing principles she had begun to identify could be razor honed to apply generally to virtually all persons who are no longer amongst the totally well. As your personal consultant Dr. Silver takes you on a beautiful train tour of Super Healing land (which she names the Healing Zone).
Using elegant, near poetic verbiage which is lay person friendly and reads easily; and which is peppered with stories and famous critical literature quotations, this is like sound motherly or sisterly advice (from a genuine expert) She crafts a method for creating and sticking with "a plan to heal" which considers the entire armamentarium of evidence based scientific medicine, to sound nutrition, proper progressive exercise, effective rest and sleep, pain control, facilitating loving human attachments, mind-body medicine and harnessing spiritual energy. Detailed "how to's" are provided. A reader will begin to experience the healing immediately as these positive words are digested and acted upon.
Dr Silver has employed a dozen plus stories of "remarkable recoveries" shared by her patients which illustrate each of her important steps on the super healing path. As one of those whose recovery is mentioned, I confess my bias in writing this review. But as a physician who has spent a life practicing rehabilitation medicine myself, I recognize that Julie has captured it "all" in this 258 page masterpiece.
If you are in need of healing, or know someone who does, or you are a provider of some healing services, you need to read this book. Now!And then share it with a friend.
