Great Evidence-Based Reference BookReview Date: 2008-01-11
Written by a physical therapist, this book is more for people in the field, such as PT's, athletic trainer's or even ortho docs- in other words people who specialize in the shoulder. I found it to be a great reference book to keep on my desk as it covers every major shoulder problem, from frozen shoulder, to impingement issues, to brachial plexus problems. However non-medical readers looking for a less technical book to treat their shoulder pain might be interested in Treat Your Own Rotator Cuff.

Cases in Sucessful Preventive Medicine - Injury ControlReview Date: 2000-07-07
Traumatic episodes of scald burns from hot water heaters, conflagrations and chemical poisoning associated with dropped lit cigarettes, near- and drownings around improperly gated or fenced home swimming pools, and easily available "non-safety packaged" firearms tragedies- these are examples of the thousands of annually preventable consumer product related injuries and deaths. And yet, aside from the many books on the statistics and epidemiology of injury, or on descriptive or anaytical reports with normative recommendations for action, there are few that illustrate, as does Political Approaches.. the "how to's" for successful legislation and advocacy so effective in the history of leadership in public health and medicine.
Each case study of how the " injury prevention docs " did it is followed by a complete set of useable references and by a follow-up ' informal' interview with the expert.
While this book was written almost ten years ago, the stories show the constants of historical personalities, values and events common to various historical settings of medicine and public health that make the differences for saving lives and limbs.
Dr. Berman, an early pioneer from the new generation of researchers, practitioners and educators, visions injuries as preventable, not random events nor fate, and shows the reader how to lead on the sometimes lonesome but invigorating road of prevention of injury disabilities and deaths.

A clinicians perspective on the PrinciplesReview Date: 2001-06-24
"Principles" is packed with clinically-useful information giving an overview of current best-practice as well as identifying the yawning gaps which exist in the research. A good illustration of this is the chapter on Awareness/Anosognosia which is a nice adjunct to Prigatano and Shachter's 1991 book on the same topic.
From the point of view of the practising clinician, a few years out from clinical training, it is wonderful the way in which Prigatano synthesises the breadth of research on a topic. He identifies the neural substrates of clincal phenomena, tests sensitive to deficit, the associated behaviour, and where possible, the treatment options.
If I were to criticise this work (which I am loathe to do because as you can tell I like it very much!) I would I would like to read more about the different settings that rehabilitation occurs in, how they compare, and which clients benefit best from which system.
Final note: A terrific resource for anyone interested in Neuropsychological Rehabilitation. Well-written and reflecting the lifetime work of a central figure in the field. Synthesises the history of rehabilitation with up-to-the-minute research (much of it Prigatano's own), and filling the gaps in the literature with snippets of his own clinical experience.
