This book provides a very thorough review of the neck, shoulder and brachial plexux. I was able to utilize it to study form my hand certification exam and the chapter on the brachial plexus was very helpful. The chapters providing the orthopedic shoulder information were also very thorough and helpful.

Great Evidence-Based Reference Book

The fourth edition looks the coolest of all previous editions due to its metallic blue cover. The information inside ain't bad either.

Written by a physical therapist, this book is more for people in the field, such as PT's, athletic trainer's or even ortho docs- in other words people who specialize in the shoulder. I found it to be a great reference book to keep on my desk as it covers every major shoulder problem, from frozen shoulder, to impingement issues, to brachial plexus problems. However non-medical readers looking for a less technical book to treat their shoulder pain might be interested in Treat Your Own Rotator Cuff.

Cases in Sucessful Preventive Medicine - Injury Control
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2000-07-07
Injuries; unintentional, suicidal and homicidal; remain the leading cause of years of life lost and of disability for children, and a leading problem for the elderly in the United States.

Traumatic episodes of scald burns from hot water heaters, conflagrations and chemical poisoning associated with dropped lit cigarettes, near- and drownings around improperly gated or fenced home swimming pools, and easily available "non-safety packaged" firearms tragedies- these are examples of the thousands of annually preventable consumer product related injuries and deaths. And yet, aside from the many books on the statistics and epidemiology of injury, or on descriptive or anaytical reports with normative recommendations for action, there are few that illustrate, as does Political Approaches.. the "how to's" for successful legislation and advocacy so effective in the history of leadership in public health and medicine.

Each case study of how the " injury prevention docs " did it is followed by a complete set of useable references and by a follow-up ' informal' interview with the expert.

While this book was written almost ten years ago, the stories show the constants of historical personalities, values and events common to various historical settings of medicine and public health that make the differences for saving lives and limbs.

Dr. Berman, an early pioneer from the new generation of researchers, practitioners and educators, visions injuries as preventable, not random events nor fate, and shows the reader how to lead on the sometimes lonesome but invigorating road of prevention of injury disabilities and deaths.

This is an excellent "how to" book with numerous illustrations & guides on what NOT to do when using a computer. I'm an author and retired executive and professor who's been using computers since before PCs were invented. If everyone followed the excellent advice in this book the incidence of computer related injuries would plummet.

I reviewed this in 1993. I thought it was great then and I haven't changed my mind. The author was a concert pianist and noticed a lot of musicians having the same trouble we associate with computer use. Her common sense approach and excellent writing style make this a superb guide for anyone who repeats the same tasks, from butchers and bakers to candlestick makers.

A must buy for trauma and orthopaedic surgeons!
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 5 total.
Review Date: 2000-07-16
The authors are the masters of AO school about fracture management. The AO philosophy is well explained in the text. The section on the pelvis and acetabulum fractures are the essence of the whole book. The main disadvantages of this work are about fractures involving spine, wrist, and hand. The section on spinal trauma loses its focus. This book omits the management of the wrist and hand fractures, a sad thing. The management for proximal humerus fracture is quite old fashioned. The AO had developed many new implants recently but barely mentioned in this book. Many proofreading errors will be encoutered but they won't lessen the value of this great work. A great buy for clinician, and junior resident. This book is very easy to read and help yougrasp the essence of the AO phiolosophy in short time. Enjoy!

Perfect for Beginners

A picture is worth 1000 words and this book uses color pictures well. The book is fairly short, but covers the subject with concise grace. I am a rank beginner. My first climb was 3 days ago, my second was yesterday (both indoors). I took my 3 year old and 10 year old yesterday and they loved it! In the past 2 days I've read 5 books on climbing, and so far this has been the best.

I read a 250 page "textbook" on climbing, and only saw about 10% that I cared about right now. At this point I really don't want to know 75 different ways to wrap a rope around my body to rappel. (you know what I mean?) Teach me something fast, show me some good graphics. Get me started on the right foot! That's what this book does in spades.

The author's best use of pictures are to show both the right way and the wrong way to do something (like run rope through a 'biner). Also, I have done alot of equipment pricing over the past few days, and this book is DEAD ON when it comes to costs of climbing equipment and accessories.

This book is everything the beginner needs to start crawling up walls, just make sure you have a belay partner so you don't kill yourself. :-)

This book is great for beginning courses.

Rock Climbing is an excellent resource for beginning courses offered through high school and university programs. The text is full color and includes many exciting photographs by noted climbing photographers and very nice artist renderings of gear and techniques. All the basics for getting started are covered. The text describes techniques and methods for Traditional and Sport Leading as well as for Top-roping routes. Information on specific training for climbing is provided and one chapter even presents a mini-guide to some of the best areas around the world. Of course, I am a bit biased since I wrote the book

I had the privilege of not only reading this book, but also listening to Janet speak and then receiving a full assessment from her (including gait, flexibility, training analysis). She knows her stuff! I have been mostly injury free for the past year since meeting Janet. I bounce back quicker from minor injuries and generally feel better and stronger when I run. Janet's flexibility, strength, and training knowledge are straight forward, easy to understand and follow, and are useful in every day life, not just in running. As we age, I think there's nothing more important than maintaining our mobility and the exercises in this book definitely help with that! I highly recommend to anyone, not just runners, but runners should definitely read!!!

Fitness for everyone

I am a 61-year old woman who walks for fitness. In reading this book I found lots of information to enable me to become more flexible and able to walk without pain. I suffer from Plantar Fasciitis and found the exercises and advice in this book to be most helpful in dealing with the problem. There is also invaluable help and advice for buying the correct shoes for walking as well as running.
I love walking and with the information supplied in this book am better equiped to wisely choose shoes and with proper exercise and preparation have been walking pain free.
I highly recommend this book for anyone of any age who is interested in building strength and flexibility. The pictures and descriptions of exercises are easy to understand, clear and helpful....in other words, "Not just for Runners".

This was the collection of stories that helped me find my voice as a writer. While reading Grass Fires, it became clear to me how important it is to tell your story in a patient and relaxed manner. Let the reader quietly observe the story's characters as the events unfold; nothing dramatic or spectacular or shocking needs to occur to hook the reader, so long as your voice is honest and observant. I was amazed, and still am, at Mr. Gerber's ability to tell a simple story that, I know as a writer, is extremely difficult to pull off. These are simple stories about everyday people, going about their everyday lives, while dealing with those little complications that keep us reading.

Welcome to Brainard -- You're really going to like it here.

I have read, re-read, and re-read Grass Fires. It is one of the few short-story collections where I have savored every sentence. Each story captures you from the first paragraph, drawing you deeper and deeper into each character as Dan Gerber peels away the layers. The descriptions are crisp and unique. Dan Gerber, I am sorry to say, is one of America's best kept secrets.

P.S. Grass Fires is currently out of print, but well worth the search. And, no, I will not sell my copy!

I can't understand why this book is no longer in print. I bought it soon after I suffered a severe spinal cord injury. This book describes so many ways that someone with a SCI can remain active, from sailboating to downhill skiing, handcycling, flying a glider, traveling, mountain climbing, sex, etc, etc, etc... It also gives the current state of medical research in stem cell therapy. It gives phone numbers and web site addresses to the experts where you can get more information and the book itself is FULL of practical information (for example, what to do if you need to urinate during a long airplane flight). I've mentored other new SCI patients and loaned out my copy of this book and found this to be an indispensible resource. It answers basic questions that aren't covered by rehab therapists.
