I've been through it all. My low back pain didn't respond to the physiotherapist. My primary care didn't think it to be HIS problem. After weeks of complaints he finally passed me on to the orthopedic guy who wanted to fuse all of my spine bones. The second opinion of the neurosurgeon was to do nothing at all. Then I was back at square one until I read this book. Michelle's guidance and calm reassurance pointed me in directions I had never considered. I don't believe in magic and I think that most of the things that my friends and my doc says are crap, but Michelle got me through the worse times of my life. GET THIS BOOK IF YOU HURT!!!!! My review could have been THAT short.

This is an essential contribution to everyone who wants to understand the truth and complexity of interacting with each other on any closer than "have a nice day" level. Every physician and not to mention psychologist or psychiatrist should study this book and get an insight and reminder into what is culturally "an ordinary American". Slavenka Kam-Hansen, M.D., Ph.D

A no-nonsense look at the ways in which "ethnic" or "ethnocultural" (i.e. non Anglo-Saxon) backgrounds can have ramifications in the values, lifestyles, and psyches of the children and grandchildren of immigrants to the United States. Written in non-technical language, it's very clear and accessible to the educated reader.

Written by a psychologist from Harvard Medical School, only treats Greek-, Jewish-, Italian-, and WASP Americans, using case studies, some of individuals and some of "mixed" marriages (made up of the preceding [sub]cultures). Valuable because it treats a subject regarded by some as a blindspot in the American social sciences, but doesn't ride the hobby horse of political correctness or engage in a polemical denunciation of "mainstream" American culture (but *doesn't* pathologize non-mainstream ones either).

Very readable (I read it in two days); also broken up into different sections so you don't need to read it straight through if you're only interested in certain parts. The author has a barebones website at [..], although it relates primarily to his current clinical practice.

One of those books that's full of common sense, unless you don't believe such a thing exists.

Since reading Illustrated Guide to Taping Techniques I have learned many different techniques used to tape a wide range of body parts and injuries. The information in this book is far more valuable then the money I payed for it. In addition to being very indepth with the tapings it also has sections that describe on what injuries the taping should be used and how to tell which taping to do before you apply any tape.

Illustrated guide to Taping Techniques gets thumbs up

Illustrated Guide To Taping Techniques is a very thorough and complete sports taping manual. It covers all taping, from the basic preventative taping to the more advanced injury specific taping. What I like about the book is that while it is concise, you do not have to be a physiotherapist to understand it. It gives easy to follow instructions along with labelled pictures of the techniques. This book is a must for anybody working as a sports trainer or remedial therapist and is very reasonably priced. I give this book my thumbs up and it certainly goes into the most used book pile in my collection.

Pocket and Reference Book

Review Date: 2001-11-17
For us we have used it as a pocket and reference book in our facility.

Most imaging books on trauma are either written by the physicians for the physicians or the radiologists for the radiologists.

Fortunately, this book provides the best of both worlds. Easy to read and explanation provided that gives meaning to why we do this and that in our facilities.

Perhaps an update would include more radiographs or line drawings which would make reading easier.

All you ever need while on duty

This small book makes it easy to carry around while at work for quick references.

There are useful tables and best of all recommendations on the types of view (plain radiographs) that would be appropriate for each situation. In addition, highlighting the advantages of using a particular view.

There are overviews, on how to improve and reduce risk of missing abnormalities on films taken at the emergency department.

Overall, the book is divided into chapters that are sensible that makes referencing easy. I would recommend this book for physicians (especially trauma), nurses, technologists and interns/housemans.

A medical book that reads like a mystery

In this extremely well written book, Luba Vihanski reviews one hundred years of research on spinal record regeneration. She describes the many angles from which this topic has been approached. She explains what was previously believed and what the experiments demonstrated. Many diagrams and photographs make the topic more clear. The researchers involved are not left out in the dark: You get a feeling that you know them.

This account is illuminating and very easy to read, even for a neophyte like me without medical training. One piece of advice: read the appendix on the spinal cord before and after injury before you read the rest of the book.

My own daughter came to Mt. Vernon Hospital less than a year after Brian. Both of them suffered a catastrophic brain injury. Reading this book by his mother, I can vividly see many of the people at the hospital and can empathize with what the Rife family experienced, not just because I had similar experiences, but because this is an incredibly interesting, inspirational, and well-written book, enlivened by Brian's own responses to what he lost and what he experienced as he struggled to find a place back in the world. I highly recommend it, and especially hope that you would buy a new edition if you can afford to since the money from the sale of the book goes directly to Brian.

Janet Rife eloquently conveys her and her family's experiences in working to help her son Brian to recover from devastating traumatic brain injury. Girded by faith, Ms. Rife lays out the details of Brian's injury, his several close calls, and her and her son's persistent effort to regain the shattered dreams of a vivid teenager, beset by a severe and long term injury.

It's been a while since I had to read this book for one of my grad school seminars, but I thought it offered a remarkably perceptive and engaging perspective on tort reform. If you've ever wondered if there might be cultural or systemic reasons Americans file so many frivolous-seeming injury-related lawsuits, this is the book for you. Jain's central thesis is as persuasive as it is empathetic, and like the previous reviewer, I found her writing style to be very clear and compelling. Highly recommended for attorneys, anthropologists, and laypeople alike.

I read this book cover to cover in two days. It is a brilliant piece of deep out of the box thinking expressed lucidly; even a layman like me could understand it without having to read again and again. The review of Healthcare in the U.S., Canada and Europe are particularly outstanding and should be read by decision makers everywhere. The author and the publisher are to be complimented for the book and readers will be grateful to them for the opportunity to look at every day problems in a new lights. I, for one, will keep this book on my shelf to quote from it at every opportunity.

Jackets

Review Date: 2008-02-27
A fine book by all means, if you're even looking at this page you have some idea of what you'll be getting into with Jake and Dinos.

But when looking at the 3rd party sellers know this: the book does not come with a dust jacket, for some reason some sellers are making a point of it as if it were supposed to.

Since this book is somewhat of a collectable item - as far as art books are concerned - the craftsmanship and printing processes are some of the best I've seen, the images themselves from what I gather are actual lithographs. So essentially these images are only thrice removed from Goya's own hands - somewhat tampered with by the 'middlemen' as it were.

Just know, a dust jacket doesn't exist for this edition.

Brilliant, sadistic, terribly funny

Review Date: 2006-10-29
There is something inherently sassy about painting over Goya. This series, my first exposure to the snickering intellect of Jake and Dinos Chapman, is part sacrilege and part necessity: Goya's celebrity, which like any has grown with time, makes it almost unthinkable that his works should be tampered with, but yet here it is. That act alone should be enough to secure your attention. The keen draughtsmanship and hyperattentiveness to detail will earn your respect, but it's the outright comedy of the series that will win you over. Every page is alive with irony and playfulness, and, if you look closely, absolutely brilliant dialogue.

I'm an artist--not an art critic. And while I usually go for the stuff that makes me think, it's impossible to resist stuff that makes me smile this much. Perhaps the Chapmans themselves are commenting on the modern art scene: hey, they say, quit taking all this so seriously.
