This short, portable book embodies the best of "just in time" learning. The information is medically up-to-date, and the explanations incredibly thorough and clear, with good use of pictures. I've used it for my Girl Scout troop for years, to learn and review basic concepts, and it's tucked into the troop first aid kit--just in case.

There is so much useful information in just this one volume. What's more, there is a symptom finder, allowing a quick overview of possible causes of given symptoms among dogs and cats. There are two tables of poison hazards, including one which tells what human medications should never be given to cats (although veterinarians advise that no human medications should ever be given to animals without checking with them). The animal conditions that can be helped by first aid range from life-threatening situations to such things as constipation in cats. There are many helpful diagrams. One of them shows how to make a homemade Elizabethan collar and another one shows how to restrain a seriously-injured animal for the trip to the vet.
Worth every penny!

Quick story: A few months ago I was driving and saw a dog running beside the road and when I was only a few feet from him, he was struck by a car. I rushed him to the vet hospital but sadly, he passed away. I went straight to the book store and picked up this book on pet first aid, learned about treating a pet who is going into shock and now keep an animal first aid kit,
blanket and copy of this book in the trunk of my car. This was the only book I could find that addressed the issue of helping an animal who is struck by a car. It is such important information and I was thankful to find it.

Does casting give you shoulder problems, or are your wrists suffering from fishing? While fishing is ordinarily seen as a relatively passive sport, it exhorts demands on the body which can result in injury - and which need preventative exercises to resist. The collaborative and expert work of physical therapy Stephen L Hisey and Medical doctor Keith R. Berend, Fit To Fish: How To Tackle Angling Injuries uses photos, illustrations, and written description to discuss common fishing-related overuse injuries. Symptoms, causes, and remedies for each are discussed along with equipment and methodology modifications for both optimum fishing and optimum health. The perfect gift for any fisherman.

The author, Deborah Ribis, has had extensive experience in a variety of areas working with people who have become disabled. She describes herself as "a nurse of 22 years who has worked in the system, survived through the system, and assisted others in the system." She has experienced two serious disabling conditions. She writes this book in a comprehensive outline form to help you go through the process step-by-step. By learning how to advocate for yourself, you can greatly increase your opportunity for success in dealing with the system. This is not a "How to Scam the System" kind of book. She legitimately addresses issues that persons who become disabled have to deal with. People who are either injured on or off the job will benefit from the information provided here.
Included in the wealth of information presented is: definitions of terms; descriptions of the roles of people involved; interesting cases; and each chapter is concluded with "Things to Remember" summaries and "Questions You Need to Ask." In the back of the book are worksheets and a communications log to help organize information. Ribis also includes a list of references and resources.
The author's own personal experiences in dealing with the system took her from being a passive patient to becoming an advocate for oneself. I experienced the same situation myself with an on-the-job injury when I was in my early twenties. I was injured while working at a hospital. Having been a loyal employee for four years, I expected different treatment then what I got. Reading "Get Back on Your Feet" taught me that many of my negative experiences in dealing with my injury are very common.
"The System" knows how to deal with injured employees. They know how to emotionally make a person try to back down from claims of injury. They know how to try to work around doctors orders for "Light Duty," etc. The employee that has been injured doesn't have the resources to know how to work through the mire that will be thrown at them. Or at least they didn't until this book was published. I wish I had this information back then. I would have been able to better advocate for myself. I ended up hiring an attorney to advocate for me, which was expensive.
I highly recommend this book to people who are recovering from injuries that will affect their employment. They need to get their hands on this resource as quickly as possible. I also recommend this book to people working with those that have become disabled because the information in here is invaluable. I am going to use "Get Back on Your Feet" as a resource for helping teach my disabled students how to self-advocate. I look forward to using the knowledge that I have gained from this great book.

Get Well Soon Book is absolutely hilarious, sparkling and original, and zany. Any who have bemoaned illness - including adults - will find this a jolly title which has a very simple message: there's always someone worse off. Harry the hamster gets his whiskers caught in his wheel, Danny the Dalmatian breaks out in stripes, and Delia the Dragon sneezes and catches herself on fire in this very simple yet heartwarming picturebook.

This is a cute little book aimed at the youngest of readers, featuring fun, vibrant, color illustrations with short captions. The message of the book is that doctors make everything better when you get hurt or sick. I know how much I hated going to the doctor when I was a little, and I know it would have taken more than a cute book to make me less anxious about heading off to the clinic without a fight, but The Get Well Soon Book by Kes Gray and Mary McQuillan might have made me feel a little better about my situation. These pages are filled with different animals who have suffered injuries of some sort or another - a mole who burrowed right into a brick wall, a dragon who burned herself with a sneeze, a turtle who got stepped on by an elephant, a hamster who got his whiskers caught in his wheel, etc. None of them look very happy, which is perfectly understandable. After a trip to the doctor, though, they're all frolicking around in no time, their pain or sickness gone and forgotten. The Get Well Soon Book is a short book, but any child should get a kick out of the wonderful illustrations - and it just might help a sick or injured child feel a little better for awhile.

Back Pain Is Not Normal

Many people simply choose to live with back pain. They think having back pain is normal - but it is not. This book really hit home in getting that message across. Being able to determine what type of pain I was having, where it was coming from and what type of doctor would be the best for me based on the self-diagnosis portion was so enlightening. I sought the care I needed and am now pain free. The exercise section was also helpful in teaching me what I need to do to stay pain free. Chances are everyone you know will need this book at one point in their lives - make sure you tell them about it! An easy and informative read.

The Little Dachshund Who Could

A sweet little dachshund has her story chronicled in appealing photographs depicting her life from puppyhood to grown dog. She is the much loved pet of a dog friendly family and has never had a shortage of love. Sadly, the little hound suffers a trauma to her spine which renders her hind legs immobile.
Surgery does not restore the hound's use of her hind legs, but she still gets around. She drags herself with much effort. Finally, her family orders a special dog cart that can be strapped to her chest. Her buttocks rest in the cart and she can trot along, with her back end coasting on wheels.
A delightful little book with comments, crayon markings and a beautiful little dachshund with a plucky, resilient spirit. In fact, dogs who have suffered similar traumas as Gretchen who have been outfitted with such carts have been used as therapy dogs for people in hospitals, homes and nursing facilities. The dogs on wheels have indeed brought many smiles, rays of hope and inspiration to those they encounter.

Though written for children, with each simple sentence accompanied by a photo, the book is utterly charming for adults too; just the many pictures of the doughty, endearing Gretchen were worth the price of the book. Gretchen loses the use of her hind limbs through a spinal injury, and her magnificent coping, eventually with the aid of a cart, is lovely and inspiring. As a recent and first-time dachshund owner, I appreciated the afterword that briefly discusses this common affliction in dachshunds and offers advice on preventing it.

I've been through it all. My low back pain didn't respond to the physiotherapist. My primary care didn't think it to be HIS problem. After weeks of complaints he finally passed me on to the orthopedic guy who wanted to fuse all of my spine bones. The second opinion of the neurosurgeon was to do nothing at all. Then I was back at square one until I read this book. Michelle's guidance and calm reassurance pointed me in directions I had never considered. I don't believe in magic and I think that most of the things that my friends and my doc says are crap, but Michelle got me through the worse times of my life. GET THIS BOOK IF YOU HURT!!!!! My review could have been THAT short.
