Haven't seen this book since I was a boy myself, but its republication is one of the great events in the publishing world of 1970. Gorey is, of course, well known for his quirky antiquarian drawings and his bizarre sense of black humor, but his work with Peter Neumeyer isn't as familiar as the stories he wrote on his own. Collaboration didn't make Gorey's particular genius any less strange; indeed it sharpened the wit and the eerie conceptualization of these drawings.

Little "Donald" is rather a creepy boy himself, but he's downright appealing next to his mother, who spends the entire book picking a splinter out of poor Donald's leg with a needle and tweezers, and then seeing to the aftermath of his wound with alcohol and a very large pillow. She will remind you of the part Katharine Hepburn played in LONG DAY'S JOURNEY INTO NIGHT.

Hooray for Donald, Gorey, Abrams and Neumeyer!

I've been a mild fan of Gorey for years, but this little book sent me right over the edge. I bring it out and read it to visitors. It helps me decide who my real friends are. The sparse text makes the story that much more surreal and enjoyable.

An author with knowledge, a helpful but confusing book

In a publishing climate and a culture where behind every commercial publication, you just know lurks some author and editor with $$$ in her or his eyes--particularly in such how to books like become rich in real estate, write a best selling novel, how homeopathy cured my pet anaconda, I found this book extremely informative, passionate about its subject, sincere, clearly written but, the major defect is its structure; Dr. Pacarelli has taken a lifetime of experience (he says he's treated 6,000 cases of RSI) and provided a clear explanation of the many causes and types of the disorder. You will learn that "carpal tunnel" syndrome, which is the media's and layperson's term for disorders arising many from keyboarding (in the past typical sufferers were more likely to be musicians, sewers, sign language interpreters, etc.) is the diagnosis in only EIGHT percent of the cases of hand and arm damage. Dr Pascarelli explains it all: there are anatomical charts of the muscle system, the nerve system, photographs of hand & arm anomolies among sufferers, diagrams & photos of the wrong way and the right way to sit at a computer station, exercises, treatments, ergonomics, etc. You will learn why your average doctor, even orthopedists don't make proper diagnoses, even treatment plans, and often lack the knowledge of the big picture of RSI that affects not just nerves, but soft tissue, musculature, mood, and a lot more. You will be given a chapter of illustrated exercise routines. You will learn (and understand through experience)that splints are basically worthless and often harmful (except perhaps for sleeping). You will learn a host of treatment modalities--some described in detail, lesser mainstream ones like Alexander Technique, Feldenkreis, and Rolfing--which he is not adverse to trying. He also is up to date enough to discuss devices like voice activated software and the like. The problem arises in that after a discussion of the many types of RSI, the treatment plans he advocates are not specified as to which particular RSI syndrome you have. They are all lumped together. Nevertheless, this book is written in a compassionate, authoritive, supportive tone, although the fact that he suggests some people might just not ever get better from RSI is pretty sobering and pessimistic.

A Great Service

Dr. Pascarelli has done us all a great service by explaining the various mechanisms of
RSI. He has done it in a way that makes a great deal of sense to the layman and has
been very helpful to me personally. Kudos to Dr. Pascarelli for writing a book for the
patients and sufferers of RSI, and not another book that only doctors can understand.

This book is a must-have for all dog owners. It reviews most everything you need to know in an emergency situation. The illustrations are kind of basic in their drawing, but the other information makes up for this slight problem. Everything seems to be covered from lacerations and broken bones down to poisons and poisonous plants(giving you symptoms and treatments).

This handy reference manual is in its second edition of print. The author starts off with basic anatomy of the horse, covering bones through to the outer layer of skin. She explains functions of each topic area(bones, tendons, ligaments, muscles, skin, lungs, heart, etc.)to enable Horse Owners to practise preventative medicine and thereby prevent injuries from occuring. The author covers stresses for each area, common areas of injury and the whys of such; rehabilitation techniques--with the pros and cons of each; short and long term weaknesses that can occur; and much, much more!

This book is highly recommended for the Horse Owner or Rider's Library.

She has called on nearly all those currently recognized for their contributions to the understanding of ergonomics in dentistry. The extensive bibliographies are an aid for anyone researching a study of this subject. If you want to get a handle on dental ergonomics, read this book.

Fantastic revealing look into the human soul
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2003-09-16
Laskowski creates a amazingly insightful and poignant look into the mind and spirit of a man with a brain injury who lives in a group home in Montana. The novel explores Robert's relationships with his caregivers, his parents, his son, and his peers in prose that is honest, thorough, and poetic. Beyond being just a book about brian injury, this is a book about the general human condition, about someone wanting to be the best he can be, about someone trying to relate meaningfully with parents and child, about someone trying to navigate succesfully our confusing postmodern world. A must read!

A Painful Exploration, Well Done
Helpful Votes: 6 out of 6 total.
Review Date: 2004-01-24
Robert was a bright and promising student and a good pianist, but that was before his accident. He fell while mountain climbing, and is now severely brain-damaged. Living in a group home, probably one of the best of its kind, he spends his days dependent on what he calls "paid caregivers." Now he is writing his journal, trying to put his jumbled thoughts on paper (on computer) with the help of Ellen, his volunteer writing coach.

It is a painful exploration, for Robert has probably reached his maximum improvement. In his thoughts he is sensitive and articulate but few people can understand what he is saying. His mobility is limited. He needs help for the most basic activities of daily living. Although the care he receives is excellent, it is also demeaning. He talks about the artificially bright demeanor of those who work with him, but seldom have time to listen to him. Like other patients with closed head injuries he is often impulsive, easily loses his temper, and sometimes shows poor judgment. His feeble attempts to relate sexually are considered "inappropriate" by those around him.

Author Tim Laskowski, who has worked with brain damaged patients for many years, explores the inner world of Robert with great empathy and sensitivity. He does this with extraordinary skill, without ever falling into sentimentality. His use of language is flawless, managing to hit just the right pitch for this difficult subject matter. And, if he doesn't completely understand the inner world, the suffering and small triumphs, of Robert's life, he probably comes as close as anyone could. This is a painful and difficult memoir, beautifully done. I recommend it highly. Reviewed by Louis N. Gruber

This small but immensely informative book by Dr. Russell demonstrates the anatomy, function as well as detailed examination techniques for the evaluation of peripheral nerves. The comprehensive diagrams demonstrating the relevant anatomy as well as full color photos (great example on pg 92) showing the proper techniques for the physical exam. This book is an excellent reference for the evaluation of patients with lesions that may be localized to the peripheral nervous system.

"This is a good review of peripheral nerve anatomy and examination techniques and I enjoyed reading it. There is a good balance between text and figures that makes it easy to read through and understand."

- Doody's Book Review Service

"In summary, this gem of a book provides both the novice and seasoned clinician with a means of rapidly learning and reviewing the essentials of peripheral nerve anatomy and function in an extremely succinct and well-organized form. It is aptly named and its price makes it a bargain."

- Journal of Neurosurgery

"This book is well organized, user friendly, and is small and light enough to fit into the pocket of a lab coat. The photographs and illustrations help to clearly convey salient concepts. ...it would be an excellent reference for clinicians who are gaining experience in examining and localizing peripheral nerve lesions."

We've turned to our copy again and again over the years, always finding something new and helpful. My husband went from 225 pounds and flabby to 160 pounds and a toned wonder over the course of 2 years with the help of this book. We've both recovered from slip and fall and other accidents much better than we would have without it, as its rehab sections are great. Take the test in front to find out where you need to concentrate.

Very thorough!!!

This book is an excellent resource for those of us who have experienced some sort of medical or physical condition at some point. Yanker provides helpful exercises, of various degrees, for just about any condition you could possibly think of. Whether it be mental, physiological, physical, you name the condition, there's an "exercise" for it. Also included in the book are various charts and diagrams useful for "your" specific fitness goals.

This short, portable book embodies the best of "just in time" learning. The information is medically up-to-date, and the explanations incredibly thorough and clear, with good use of pictures. I've used it for my Girl Scout troop for years, to learn and review basic concepts, and it's tucked into the troop first aid kit--just in case.
