This an excellent book for anyone interested in the science of keeping a performance horse sound and bringing it to peak condition at the time of the events of the season. The details of new information on interpreting physiological signs in your horse will help the analytical, or the more intuitive owner of a polocrosse, event, polo or trail horse.

I normally don't buy books. But having read this one from the library, I found it so useful, I had to own my own copy.

Conditioning for Strength and Human Performance is an excellent reference for both practioners and researchers in the field. The basic science sections are very well organized and written. I was very impressed with the way difficult material was explained in a clear and easy to understand fashion. The descriptions and instructional cues for various exercises were also very well done. Most importantly, the chapters on program design provide a wealth of information on exercise prescription. A worthy text in the library for anyone who works in the strength and conditioning field.

Absolutely Excellent!!

This book is an excellent choice for students wishing to advance their knoweledge on everything from basic science to nutrition, testing, resistance training, and aerobic conditioning for the improvement of human performance. The book also provides clear identification of various adaptations in response to exercise, as well as a section on special topics such as ergogenic aids and special populations. A variety of color pictures demonstrating graphs, charts, and exercise demonstrations are also included, as well as a cd-rom to supplement.

Overall, this book is a great tool for those wishing to understand the latest findings from research. For those wishing to advance their knowledge in the fields of exercise science and strength and conditioning, this book is a must-have for your library!

Dr. Murphy has produced the state of the art text in the conservative management of the Cervical spine. Covered are the basic sciences, most common clincal syndromes, evaluation, treatment, rehabilitation, and management. Taking a multi-disciplinary approach, this book serves Chiropractic physicians, Physiatrists, physical therapists, Osteopathic physicians, and all clinicians with a need and interest in understading conservative Cervical spine care.

Among therapeutic approaches covered are manipulation, soft-tissue techniques, the Mckenzie protocol, sensorimotor rehabilitation, cervical stabilization, exercises, psychological management, and surgical.

Clinical conditions include Cervical trauma, motor vehicle collisions, headaches, Cervical radicular and pseudoradicular syndromes, joint dysfunction, myofascial syndromes, vertigo, disequilibrium, orofacial pain, temporomandibular disorders, and neuropsychological dysfunction.

Of all the fine information contained in this work, my favorite portions consist of the quite frequent "Clinical Pearls" interspersed thoughout each chapter. These are Dr. Murphy's own personal commentaries, practical clinical tips, and observations. They add immeasurably to the usefulness of the information in daily practice.

Invaluable resource for therapists working with dancers
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2003-09-23
This is an indispensable resource for the physical therapist or Pilates instructor who works with dancers. It covers functional anatomy as it relates to the dancer, teaches the analysis of posture and movement as it relates to the classical dancer, the typical injuries sustained by dancers and their management and rehabilitation.

This text, combined with Sally Fitt's, Dance Kinesiology, should be in every therapist's library. If the book has one fault, it is that is focuses almost exclusively on classical dancers.

If you teach Dance , you must have this !

This book written by Justin Howse, Consultant Orthepaedic Surgeon to the Royal Ballet Schools, The Royal Academy of Dancing and the Remedial Dance Clinic, London , and also by Shirley Hancock, Principal Physiotherapist to the Royal Ballet Schools, the Royal Academy of Dancing and the Remedial Dance Clinic ,London.

This book is a study reading requirement for the Royal Academy of Dancing Anatomy paper.

The foreward by Dame Ninette de Valois, says it all really. "This book gives us the opportunity to indulge in some serious reflection. It is full of highly technical observations on movement as related to the world of ballet and is accompanied by helpful instructions. A great deal of it should be rewarding to students, dancers, teachers, repetiteurs and ballet staff in general. I dare to add that in my opionion, it is also food for thought for choreographers. Today it is not customary for choreographers to give either scientific or practical thought to their choreographic demands. Let us recall that a composer has to remember to keep within the range of a singer's voice. It therefore seems right for a choreographer to study more carefully not only the limitation of dancer's limbs but also the limitation of their general stamina ."

You will never regret spending the money on this book.I refer to this book often. It has excellent photographs also.

I am fortunate in that one of my friends is a physiotherapist who works at the local medical centre. This book provides excellent back up.

This book is the most comprehensive guide to the physiology of dancing. It answers important questions about what is normal and what can cause problems. It also deals with correcting technique problems and preventing injuries by proper strengthening exercises. It covers the entire body from head to toe. In my opinion every dance teacher should read this book so they can responsibly develop young dancers. This book should be reprinted --- anyone who dances should read it and keep it handy as a valuable resource.

You don't have to be a dancer to love this book!

Dancing Longer, Dancing Stronger is for anyone who desires to understand their body and how to make it work more effectively. Along with detailed anatomical descriptions of all the bones and muscles in the body and how they interact, are exercises for both strengthening and lengthening each muscle set. You don't have devote a fortune in expensive equipment or a large amount of time doing repetive, boring movement. Suggestions in the Question and Answer sections help you define your structural weaknesses and suggest exercises within the program for overcoming them. Plus you never have to count past 8! Each exercise is done to one of four 8 count rhythms with most exercises being either 4 or 8 reptitions each. As a figure skater, this book has provided me with the best off-ice training I've found to date. Even my coach wants a copy!

I love this strong girl jock character and her bewildering mystery -- who is sending those envelopes of money every year on the anniversary of her mother's tragic death? The action keeps you turning the pages and the characters stick with you long after you finish the book. This was a hit with my basketball playing nieces.

A great popular science book on the field of motor control
Helpful Votes: 12 out of 12 total.
Review Date: 1998-12-08
This book is an extraordinary combination of a piece of history with the state-of-the-art research in the field of motor control. It contains a translation of a popular-science book by the Russian physiologist Nicholai A. Bernstein, and then a few commentaries describing the current state of the research in the field of motor control. Bernstein is one of the pioneers in the research of motor control and his book describes in a simple language the main properties and problems that are to be solved in order to understand the amazing dexterity of human motor control. Dexterity is in finding a motor solution for any situation and in any conditions. Bernstein describes many nice tails and legend to illustrate this ability, such as the Bible legend about the giant Goliath and young David, who defeated the giant with dexterity. Then he describes the origin and construction of movement and the problem of the excess degrees of freedom, which is referred to in the scientific literature as the Bernstein problem. This problem is due to the biological system being redundant. Redundancy is by no mean redundant, it contributes to the flexibility and reliability of the system, therefor I prefer to relate to the redundancy as a virtue rather then a problem. Bernstein considers redundancy as the main distinction between the motor apparatus in man and the higher animals and artificial devices, and after half of a century this problem is still open and we keep trying to understand and imitate the great dexterity that nature developed in controlling redundant systems. This book is recommended for the general scientific oriented public, such as the readers of Scientific American and especially to students in engineering and in medicine that are interested in the field of motor control

A book really comes alive when it's about someone you knew. Mr. Woody did a wonderful job in bringing out Chucky's finest qualities: courage, determination, friendliness, and his ability to overcome lifes obstacles. And, since this book was about more than just Chucky and tells a wonderful life-story, it adds meaning and another dimension to the great person I went to high school with. This book should be required reading for all high school students, especially athletes. Thumbs Up, Mr. Woody!

What Kathy Duerr provides in Doctor Mom's Quick Reference Guide To Natural Healthcare At Home is tried and true, doctor-endorsed, and "parent friendly" information on natural, commonplace, effective, and safe remedies for treating minor illnesses without having to resort to pharmaceutical drugs, thereby avoiding antibiotic and chemical compound side-affects. Duerr address such parental questions as to whether a child is really hyperactive, the safety and effectiveness of immunizations, what should go into a family medicine cabinet; how to get a child to sleep, baby colic, childhood fevers, cough and soar throat treatments, and the best way to deal with minor cuts and scrapes. Doctor Mom's Quick Reference Guide To Natural Healthcare At Home is highly recommended reading for anyone concerned with alternative health care issues, naturopathy, children's health, and effective parenting.

I wish I had found a book like this when my kids were young, I know I would have had the courage to run to the doctor less often and relied more on my medicine chest. My daughter has been very worried about giving her children so many antibiotics, every time they have an earache or a sore throat, it seems to be more drugs. At last here is someone here who talks sense, and gives us advice on how to treat every day ailments without resorting to strong drugs and possible side effects. Kathy Duerr believes in foot baths, and massaging feet with oils and herbs, and gives advice on what to keep in your medicine cupboard. My daughter, who has three little ones, is over the moon about this book, and can't recommend it highly enough to all parents of young children.
