The authors Whiting and Zernicke are to be congratulated for this high-quality reference book. As someone who testifies often in civil litigation cases regarding the physical mechanics of motor vehicle and premises accidents and the associated mechanisms of human injury, I found this book to be a superb addition to my technical library. For the uninitiated in injury mechanics, it begins impressively with a low-gear, historical, and introductory manner, and takes the reader though many basic mechanical concepts. The book then covers a wide assortment of human injuries and their causal mechanisms. I observed that the book is very well-formated with titles, sub-titles, text, add-in framed articles, effective anatomical line drawings, and illustrative photographs. While the book is technical in nature, I noted that it was written to be appreciated by those outside the technical area of injury biomechanics. I readily recommend this book to anyone interested in the mechanisms of human injury.

Ms. Duran shows how to stick up for yourself in our pushy medical system. Attitude is everything. Heal yourself or blame yourself. There are universal truths in this book and I have benefited from hearing of her experience. I no longer fear doctors, death, or dismemberment. (Well a LITTLE less fear.)

Superbly written, with inspiration and information for all.

Laurel Duran's book skillfully weaves spiritual truth and suspense with the story of one who followed her own path of healing in the face of the grim prognosis offered by allopathic medicine. She encourages those challenged by illness to listen to their intuition and explore healing alternatives as well as following the advice of medical personnel. The author, who survived a near-death experience, demonstrates that it is possible for those whom doctors have declared "hopeless" to recover fully. The book carries a powerful reminder that we are not alone in this life - the One who has sponsored us remains with us at all times. I promise any reader that reading The Blue Cord will produce laughter, tears, chills, rage, and leave you with an increased appreciation of human courage and the power of Spirit in the face of challenges.

CAPTIV is a very accessible book about S. Marie's healing journey through child abuse, its painful and challenging consequences, and the light she creates at the end of the tunnel. The author's extraordinary gift is to say so much about her experience, with tremendous insight, in so few words.

This book should be required reading, not only for every psychologist, therapist and university psychology student, but for every parent. For after reading this book, few parents could possibly perpetrate on their innocent child, the devastating damage that results from physical, emotional and sexual abuse.

Buy this book. You will see the world in a new way, and be better for it.

At last we have a book which focuses on and deals with many of the issues faced by rehabilitators and educators as well as falconers.

The information is presented in an easy-to-read manner, with informative, easily interpreted tables and diagrams. It is clearly aimed at a worldwide audience and at the same time is one of the first "care and management" books I've found to include information on Australian species as well as those from Europe, North America, Asia and Africa.

This is a book that belongs on the shelf of anyone active in raptor rehabilitation, if not for their own enlightenment, then as an invaluable training tool and curriculum guide for new trainees.

As a rehabber and adult educator, I can see this book going straight to the top of my 'Recommended Reading' list.

As predatory birds, raptors a a critically important part of avian ecosystems. The collaboration of experienced and seasoned raptor experts Richard Naisbitt and Peter Holz, Captive Raptor: Management And Rehabilitation is a critically important reference work on the treatment and release of injured wild and captive raptors. Comprehensive and thoroughly "reader friendly", Captive Raptor covers the general care of raptors, raptor diets, raptor medicine, raptor aviaries, raptor behavior and training, the release of rehabilitated raptors, and monitoring released raptors. Enhanced with a wealth of useful tables, graphs and drawings on the successful methods of treating and caring for captive raptors, as well as a profusion of full color photographs throughout, Captive Raptors is an invaluable and necessary addition to personal and professional raptor management training and reference collections.

This book focuses on entrapped median, radial and ulnar nerves: How they get trapped, and what to do about it. Here's a book that explains it better than any hand surgeon or nuerologist will. Also, you'll learn what it is a professional can do for you and what you can do for yourself. This book really explains it all much better than many other books (and I've read many newer ones). I was so happy to get it, I stayed up into the wee hours and devoured it.

I found this book through Tammy Crouch Fletcher's RSI FAQ and the many suggestions helped me to improve my symptoms without surgery. Full of common sense, written by a patient (Ms. Crouch Fletcher had two surgeries and researched virtually every treatment available), full of good interviews and tips, and designed to help you help yourself. Excellent read before visiting the surgeon!

Surgery is not always the answer.

A truly collaborative approach to brain injury rehab
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2007-02-27
When we were organizing a community reentry program for adults with brain injury eight years ago, this book became our bible. Based on rich research in the area of positive behavioral supports for students with behavioral challenges, and focused primarily on the brain injury community, the book provides an organized and well-reasoned approach to working with individuals and families coping with cognitive-behavioral issues. I especially love their important lessons that all behaviors are efforts at communication, that "setting events" may be adapted to help people avoid harmful behaviors rather than punish them after they occur, and their believe in working within communities rather than clinical settings. All brain injury therapists should read this book and consider its implications for practice.

Trauma Library

A vivid full color atlas that presents nearly 700 images, including; clinical, operative and autopsy photographs, radiographs, magnetic resonance imaging, angiography and original drawings. Chapters are organized by major body regions including the head, face, neck, chest, abdomen, musculoskeletal system, spine and soft tissue system. The accompanying text discusses management guidelines, work up protocols and common pitfalls. The objective of the book is to give the reader a detailed clinical and visual depiction of trauma injuries that commonly present within one of the largest trauma center in the United States.

The clear and concise text, accompanied as it is with side by side pictorial comparisons of surgical disease images and treatment protocols, is extremely effective. The Emergency Medical Physicians/authors must have worked closely with the Trauma Surgeons in order to capture images during critical stages of care. ED snapshots of external signs of injuries accompanied by X-rays, and when available intra-operative pictures, give readers a comprehensive understanding of the treatment strategies employed. Most helpful to this reviewer were the photos of external signs of head injuries, followed by CAT scans and concluding with images from the operating room detailing intracranial blood collections and subsequent evacuations. Many of the images in the book depict injuries that are unique or rare, although not exclusive to large urban centers. For example, photos of close range shotgun wounds, impaled foreign bodies, dislocations and severe facial trauma. Many emergency trauma surgical procedures that may be less commonly observed in smaller trauma centers are presented in an easy to appreciate format including; catheter balloon tamponade techniques to stem hemorrhage and lateral canthotomy to reduce retrobulbar pressure of the optic nerve. The autopsy images were exceptional as well. Most notable were those images depicting severe distraction of the spinal column and extrusion of the spinal cord.

I welcome the opportunity to utilize this impressive compilation of images and techniques in my teaching and clinical work, and I highly recommend it's use to ICU, OR and ER nurses. Utilizing detailed and strikingly graphic photography and text, the book provides a thorough and comprehensive understanding of the initial presentation of a variety of injuries and treatment protocols. A fascinating and practical hands on textbook for the ER and trauma library.

Complete Idiot's Guide to Child Safety
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2001-07-07
Parents receive so much information about possible dangers to their children and what they can do to protect them that they find it difficult to know where to draw the line. What safety measures should they insist their child and other caregivers observe? Which ones are less important? This book helps them focus on what is most important. As manager of Texas Children's Center for Childhood Injury Prevention and the local Safe Kids coordinator, I hear many stories from parents about what problems might have been prevented if they had only known . . . Since we can expect each year for one child in four to be injured badly enough to need medical care, this is a most needed reference for parents.

Keep Your Kids Safe!
Helpful Votes: 7 out of 7 total.
Review Date: 2000-03-01
Keeping kids safe sounds scary, but this book offers some simple solutions. The authors not only educate readers about safety at home and school, in the car and on the bike, they also tackle safety and sports, pools, and even farms.

Did you know that falls from shopping carts are a major reason why kids visit emergency rooms? The authors explain how to keep your kid secure in the cart. Do you when your child is old enough to cross the street alone? The answer surprised me. Do you when your child is mature enough to be home alone? They offer a quiz to help you decide when your child -- and you -- are ready for that big step.

I recommend this book for anyone who watches kids between infancy and age 14. After all, keeping our kids safe and secure is just as important as letting them know they are loved.
