The Spinal Cord Injury HandbookReview Date: 2008-07-20

The Spinal Cord Injry HandbookReview Date: 2000-05-01
It also gave insight as to what the family has to deal with as well as the patient. It also covered everything from what a spinal cord injury was to diagnosis and treatment;skin care; rehab;bladder and bowel management and caregiver relief. This is the A-Z book when in comes to spinal injuries.
I found in very informative as my husband recently suffered a spinal cord injury at work and we were told that he would never walk again. However, we have been blessed and he is walking 100 ft w/a walker at a time and is slowly regaining movement in his lower extremeties and we hope that he will be back to his old self soon.
I am ordering this book for a friend who now has to deal with this same injury. Thanks...

Oh My God!!!!
I thought I would just read a couple chapters of your book the other night. Well I was hooked from the beginning. I have not laughed so hard and cried reading just one book before. I freaked out when right in the middle of the book I lost power. All night last night I kept waiting for the power to come on so I could start reading again. You wrote it so well it is like I know you and Mouse now.
You did a wonderful job! This is a must read for all adults. (The language and some scenes prevent it from being a book for teenagers but that is my opinion.) The book opens your eyes to alot of things. There are so many people who I want to tell them to run out to the bookstore and buy it.
Oh My, I am still laughing at the different parts as they run through my head. Thank you for writing this book for 101 reasons, some you may never realize. Though I do have one question because it has been bothering me since I read it. I just don't understand this part. Why did you rub baby oil behind your nads? Call me naive or leading a sheltered life, but I have no clue and it is driving me crazy wanting to know why.
Thank you for allowing me to read your book,
Brenda,

An Excellent Text For Therapists and Those Seeking HelpReview Date: 2005-12-29
Too many times, self-injury is confused with suicidal ideation and this book helps to dispell a lot of old myths. Mr. Walsh has done considerable research in synthesizing what has already has been written and wrote a "bill of rights for people who self-harm" against those myths. This is not a book that will be read in one sitting but one that the reader can consult and review. A more readable approach, though more narrow and less comprehensive, is "Cutting" (1999) by Steve Levonkron (as a matter of full disclosure, I once did a conference with Mr. Levenkron years ago). "A Bright Red Scream" (1998) by Marlee Strong remains the classic in this field.
Valuable resource for understanding and treating self-injury Review Date: 2006-01-24
The main thrust of the book is on assessment and treatment of self-injury, for which Barent proposes an inspiring bio-cognitive-behavioural approach. Topics addressed in Part Two include contingency management, replacement skills training, cognitive treatment, body image work, exposure treatment and resolution of trauma, family treatment, psychopharmacological treatment, and managing the reactions of therapists and other caregivers to self-injury.
Later chapters deal with specific issues such as self-injury contagion, managing self-injury in school settings, and treating major self-injury.
Overall, Barent has done a masterful job of blending facts, theories, case examples, and practical exercises to create an engaging and thorough guide to understanding, assessment, and treatment of self-injury. This excellent resource deserves a well-earned place on the bookshelves of mental health practitioners, researchers, and anyone else interested in this challenging and complex behaviour.

A Comprehensive and Multidisciplinary GuideReview Date: 2004-02-29
Wound Care Practice by Paul J. Sheffield,
PhD, Adrianne P.S. Smith, MD, and Caroline E. Fife, MD is the definitive text that fills that void. The focus of this book
is assessment and management of chronic wounds in a wound care practice setting. "Physicians, nurses, enterostomal therapists,
physical
therapists, and other health care professionals will find in this book the principles of modern, moist, interactive
wound care and the application of advanced therapies."
"This book represents the combined efforts of 60 authors selected
from basic sciences, clinical sciences, and clinical practice. The reader can examine the principles of managing the wound
and treating the underlying cause of pressure sores, vascular insufficiency, chronic venous insufficiency ulcers, diabetic/neurotrophic
foot ulcers, and other chronic wounds."
(Paul J. Sheffield, from the Preface).
Wound Care Practice is well organized
and divided into five main sections which include application chapters on defining and understanding the etiology of problem
wounds, principles of wound assessment, principles of wound management, pain, infection, adjunctive therapies, and healthcare
delivery.
The book also includes a helpful resource section that provides names, addresses, and contact information for
wound care product and technology manufacturers.
This book differs significantly from others of the same subject matter
in the holistic approach the authors have taken when examining each section's topic. An excellent example of this multidisciplinary
and holistic manner is readily available in the first chapter, "Etiology of the Problem Wound". In this
chapter the authors
offer a fascinating range of material that addresses oxygen and perfusion issues, the impact of nutrition and hydration, hematological
abnormalities, and socioeconomic issues. Yes, this is a text, but the effects of socioeconomic issues on wounds had my rapt
attention!
I highly recommend this book for anyone practicing or teaching wound care. The extensive photographs of actual
wounds as well as graphs and assessment tools in this book lead me to recommend it as a reference that should be made available
at nursing stations for quick reference as well. "Wound Care Practice"
would be a good addition to medical libraries,
for advanced practice nursing programs, and as a reference for practicing nurses in all settings. My vote = Five Stars!

A must have for everyone!Review Date: 2008-04-09
I highly recommend this book to anyone who sits, drives, uses a computer, cell phone or PDA- just about all of us!
Easy to follow!Review Date: 2008-04-21
"The human body evolved to hunt and gather, to run and jump and climb, to play hard and rest fully - not to sit in front of a computer all day. Evolution has not kept up with the rapid changes of the technological age; we are simply not equipped to deal with all the requirements of modern life." (p. 15) Sitting at a computer for a prolonged period of time can wreak havoc on your body. Not only can it affect your back, neck, and shoulders but it can also be the cause of tendonitis and carpal tunnel syndrome among other things. In order to counteract the negative effects that heavy computer use can have on your body it is important to develop some sort of regular fitness regimen.
Throughout "Yoga for Computer Users," Sandy Blaine provides us with a variety of yoga poses along with detailed explanations and photographs showing how to perform them correctly. There are poses in the book that can be performed right at your computer desk at work and there are others that are for when you are away from your computer. Under each exercise's name is a list of what body areas this particular stretch will help to work. To receive the highest level of benefits Blaine advises us to take "at least two focused, 10-to-20 minute yoga breaks during the course of a full workday." (p. 25)
Being an avid computer user, this book was definitely geared toward me. Even though I had always wanted to, I had never tried yoga in the past. I found that the instructions and photographs that Blaine provided were very adequate in helping me to achieve the desired positions. There were some exercises that I could not fully do because my body just didn't stretch that way; but I am hoping in the future, with more practice, that I will be able to master them. With the short amount of time that I have been practicing the poses in "Yoga for Computer Users," I have noticed the benefits already, particularly in my neck and shoulders. I think this book would be beneficial to anyone who spends a lot of time on a computer or at a desk.

An amazing little field guideReview Date: 2003-06-07
It's NOT an herbal. There's not much for theory here -- and that's its strength, which sets it apart from everything else. The topic is pretty much confined to what you need to do, and the handful of items you ought to be carrying with you.
No long discourses to plow through, which just might save your life in an emergency. Whether you're into rafting or cycling, or NASCAR events, "20 Herbs" could be the best few dollars you've ever spent, and should be the first thing you pack when you leave the house.
