This book is for couples who ARE having fertility problems. If you are just trying to get pregnant and haven't been diagnosed with a problem I wouldn't read this book. It is full of medical info and what to talk to your doctor about.

Great place to start if questioning fertility issues.

Dr. Stangel is well-known and highly respected fertility specialist in the NY area with 30 years experience. This book provides a great starting point for women/couples who may be wondering if they are having fertility problems. It answers those routine questions one may have. It provides many explanations in lay-person's terms, not all of the medical jargon.
Highly recommended!!

Not the greatest book for couples without fertility problems

My husband and I were looking for a book to read on things we should do to prepare to get pregnant and some helpful tips on good times when to attempt to having a baby but to be frank 95 percent of the book is for people that are having problems having a baby so if you looking for something like I did that will just give you insight on foods you should eat, things to avoid ect this isnt the book for you

This book is a nice overview of various options available to those having difficulty conceiving. Unfortunately, this field changes quickly, and since it's publication it's very outdated. Techniques she discusses are now rarely used because newer/more effective treatments have been established. Also, her slant against fertility treatments (as she admits in the preface)is obvious throughout the book. Finally, the author's understanding of research appears limited. Specifically, she fails to consider that IVF pregnancies are not at higher risk of miscarriage - maternal age is the risk factor. It just so happens that those who receive IVF treatments are generally older.

It's true that a woman's general health may play a role in her fertility (and certainly in her ability to carry a healthy pregnancy), and that certain medical problems can drastically increase the risk of infertility (untreated polycystic ovary syndrome, STDs). This book might be useful in suggesting some testing that women in their early 30s might do to help them decide how long it might be relatively safe to delay trying to conceive.

But this book also contains some of the same hype that makes women mistakenly confident that they can easily get pregnant with their own eggs after age 40 (or even 45!):

"You can have it all. A challenging career. A satisfying personal life. A loving mate. And a baby when you're ready." (back cover)

"In addition to the women's revolution and the technological boom weighing in on the age of childbearing, it's become downright fashionable to be a mature mom. Our superstars are looking more capable and beautiful than ever with a baby in tow, including Geena Davis (first-time mom at age 46), Madonna (second-time mom at 41), Kim Basinger (gave birth at 44), and Susan Sarandon (who had babies at 39, 42, and 45). Former *cover* girls are now focused on their *baby* girls (and boys) including over-40 moms Christie Brinkley, Iman, and Cheryl Tiegs (mother of twins at 52 who used a surrogate to carry the babies, although the eggs were her own)." (pp 4-5)

It's true that most women can get PREGNANT and GIVE BIRTH in their 40s, but what this isn't telling you is that a very significant percentage cannot get pregnant with their own eggs in their 40s, and a majority cannot get pregnant with their own eggs in their late 40s. If a woman is happy to go through several cycles of in vitro fertilization, spend tens of thousands of dollars for the medical procedures and the egg donor, and become pregnant with the genetic baby of another woman (as most of the celebrities mentioned above did), then yes, medical technology has much to offer - and that's wonderful! I don't at all mean to suggest anything negative about this way to become a mother. But many women reading the tabloids and this book may not understand that that route (or adoption) is the route that they very well may HAVE to take if they delay childbearing until their 40s or perhaps even to their late 30s. As a woman who didn't find my husband and marry until age 35, I understand well that there are plenty of weighty reasons not to have children younger, and I'm all in favor of options. But I hope women's decisions will be informed ones. This book is a mixed bag when it comes to helping women be informed.

This is a terrible book. It refers to children by DI as "illegitimate" and compares donor insemination to adultery. Its a terrible book and I don't recommend it to anyone.

How did Elizabeth Noble conceive with a sperm donor she knew but without having sex with him? How did her family feel about it? This is an thought provoking book which not only tells Noble's story but has an interesting chapter on donor offspring and their reactions at learning as adults that they have biological fathers who are not the fathers they grew up with. While this is a good book I would also recommend to anyone planning to by this book to also buy Helping the Stork: The Choices and Challenges of Donor Insemination by Vercollone. Vercollone's book helps you discuss DI with your donor offspring so they don't become bitter...which was Noble's experience.

Nothing in life is perfect and nothing we do ever matters, from conceing out children in the most natural and "normal" of ways to using any sort of infertility assistance-- what truly matters in the end is the WHYs and the HOWs of everything we do.

This is an ugly, embittered, and even mean-spirited book and I'd advice anyone very much in lvoe with a partner, male or female, who is infertile, to NOT read this book: it'll ake your already fearful feelings worse, and for no logical reason.

In a perfect world, we'd all be able to conceive at the drop of a hat. But the world is not perfect and neither is nature, yet does not make our lives any more beautiful and worthwhile.

If you love someone fiercely and they, for not fault of their own, cannot conceive but you still want to create a family together, then do everything in your power to form a family-- by sperm, egg, embryo donations or adoption.

In the end, it''ll make little difference-- for yourself, your partner, or your offspring.

Because what truly matters is love, genuine love.

Your children will feel the love between you, before and after they've been brought into the world and within your family. That lvoe will make them secure forever, regardless of how they arrived at your doorstep.

This CD is a complete waste of money. It is just a bunch of links to CDC, Medline, NIH, and FDA websites. It has no advantage over simply doing your own web search of these government websites.

While this book has some good information, I did not feel that it suited my needs. I also didn't like the fact that it used the metric system for its calculations. While I can do the conversions, I did not want to have to sit there and convert things while trying to read.

You'd be better to invest money in another book.
